2014-15 MONMOUTH WOMEN’S BASKETBALLWHO’S BACK?Monmouth returns 10 letter winners and three starters from last year’s team, including four of the Hawks’ top five scorers. Jasmine Walker leads the group of returners at 7.4 points and 5.1 rebounds per game, while Sara English finished with 5.8 points and a team-best 5.6 rebounds per game. Helena Kurt averaged 5.5 points and 1.6 assists per game, while Mia Hopkins also contributed 4.9 points per game, shooting a team-best 35.3 percent from long range.

WHO’S NEW?The Hawks added three new players to the roster for 2014-15. Seton Hall transfer Jas-mine McCall will be immediately eligible for this season after spending two years with the Pirates. Guard Rachel Odumu joins Monmouth after leading Miller School of Albemarle (Va.) to a second state championship last season, while a local product and 1,000-point scorer, forward Dana Carbone from Monsignor Donovan High School in Toms River, N.J., rounds out the class.

WHO’S GONE?The Hawks are faced with replacing a pair of starters in Chevannah Paalvast and Shira Shect, as well as transfers Kasey Chambers and India Dotson. Paalvast led the Hawks at 13.2 points and 5.2 rebounds per game, while totaling more than 1,000 career points. Shecht averaged 4.0 points and 2.0 rebounds in 20 starts early in the year before bat-tling through injuries late in the year. Chambers, who transferred to Penn, started the first nine games last season and finished the year at 4.7 points and a team-best 2.1 assists per game. India Dotson moved on to the University of New Haven after seeing action in two games as a reserve.

A EUROPEAN TOUR TO REMEMBERMonmouth embarked on a 10-day tour of Serbia, Montenegro, Croatia and Italy this past August. The Hawks faced the Serbian National Team and were the first American Division I collegiate team, men’s or women’s, to take a tour of Serbia in 30 years. Monmouth also faced junior Danica Dragicevic’s club team in Belgrade and a Montenegrin club team. The Hawks toured the cities of Belgrade, Serbia; Dubrovnik, Croatia; Budva, Montenegro; and Rome, Italy.

WHO LED THE HAWKS IN DOUBLE-DOUBLES IN 13-14?In spite of being the second-shortest player on the roster, Jasmine Walker led the Hawks in double-doubles with three in 2013-14. She posted a pair of double-doubles against Rider before capping the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds, six on the offensive glass, against top-seeded Iona in the MAAC Championship Quarterfinals. Walker’s second double-double included career highs of 20 points and 13 rebounds at Rider on Feb. 19.

DOUBLE DIGITS IN THE SCORING COLUMN10 or more Hawks entered the scoring column on 10 occasions last season, includ-ing three straight Jan. 10-17. 10 Hawks scored against Yale in the season opener, before turning the trick again at Delaware and No. 1 UConn. 10 more Hawks en-tered the scoring column twice each against Canisius, Siena and Iona, as well as once against Quinnipiac.

12 TIMES 1012 different Hawks had at least one game of 10 points or more in 2013-14. Chevannah Paalvast, Jasmine Walker, Sara English, Shira Shecht, Kasey Chambers, Helena Kurt, Jenny Horvatinovic, Jamiyah Bethune, Mia Hopkins, Sophie Beaudry and Danica Dragicevic all finished a game in double figures.

FRESHMEN BECAME SOPHOMORESThe Hawks defeated Niagara in the first round of the 2014 MAAC Championships in large part due to the contributions of their freshman class. Christina Mitchell led the group with 14 points and 13 rebounds, including a pivotal offensive rebound and putback in the final minute, while Helena Kurt added 11 points and four assists. Mia Hopkins scored eight points, including a clutch jumper with the shot clock running down and MU clinging to a one-point lead with 1:19 remaining in regulation. Sophie Beaudry also added six rebounds, including five on the offensive glass.

2014-15 MONMOUTH WOMEN’S BASKETBALLHORVATINOVIC HAULS IN DOUBLE-DIGIT BOARDSFreshman Jenny Horvatinovic became the fourth Hawk last season to collect 10 or more rebounds in a single game on Feb. 22 when she grabbed 10 boards against Niagara. She narrowly missed a double-double with eight points. Horvatinovic joined Sara English, Chevannah Paalvast and Jasmine Walker as Hawks who grabbed double-digit rebounds in a single game.

SARA TEARS DOWN 16 BOARDSSara English grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds, six on the offensive glass, Feb. 16 at Quinnipiac. Her previous career high was 14, established earlier last year against Manhattan.

HEARTBREAKER AT HYNESMonmouth used brilliant halfcourt defense to come all the way back from a 15-point second-half deficit at Iona’s Hynes Athletic Center on Feb. 14. Monmouth trailed by 15 with 15 minutes remaining in regulation and whittled away at the lead until a 10-0 run put the Hawks on top, 57-56. Monmouth again took the lead, 59-58, on two Danica Dragicevic free throws with 10 seconds left, but Aleesha Powell went coast to coast to score the game-winning bucket with 3.5 seconds left. Monmouth held Iona to 22.2 percent (6-27) shooting in the second half.

HAWKS PLAY 4KAYSince Head Coach Jenny Palmateer took over the reigns of the Monmouth women’s basketball team, Play 4Kay Day has traditionally taken on greater meaning. Palmateer both played and coached a combined 14 years under Kay Yow, the longtime North Carolina State Head Coach for whom the cause is named. Play 4Kay is a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization committed to being a part of finding an answer in the fight against women’s cancers through raising money for scientific research, assisting the underserved and unifying people for a common cause.

SWARMING DEFENSEMonmouth employed a swarming, full-court press against Saint Peter’s and forced a season-high 27 turnovers on Jan. 30. The turnover margin resulted in a 20-8 edge in points off turnovers in the 11-point victory. Chevannah Paalvast led the Hawks, of-fensively and defensively, with 18 points and four steals. Sara English added 11 points and three blocks, while Mia Hopkins had 12 points and seven rebounds.

ENGLISH EMERGESHaving compiled three double-doubles in her sophomore season, everyone in West Long Branch knew Sara English had the ability to put up big numbers. In the Hawks’ 20th and 21st games of the season and after sitting out the prior contest due to injury, English’s potential became a reality with a career-high 19 points and 10 rebounds against Iona on Jan. 24 and 19 points and 14 rebounds on Jan. 26 against Manhat-tan. Included in the 14-rebound effort were seven caroms on the offensive glass.

HOPKINS HONOREDMia Hopkins became the second Monmouth freshman to be named MAAC Rookie of the Week on Jan. 27. The honor came after she averaged 9.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.5 assists, while shooting 42.1 percent (8-19), including 42.9 percent (3-7) from long range in the Hawks’ 1-1 week. Against Manhattan, Hopkins tied her season high with 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting, including 3-for-4 from beyond the three-point arc

EASY SHOTS, EASY ASSISTSMonmouth shot a season-high 52.5 percent (31-59) from the floor against Manhattan on Jan. 26, in large part because of high-percentage shots set up by a season-high 21 assists. Monmouth shot 62.1 percent (18-29) with 11 assists in the second half. Sara English led the way with 8-of-12 shooting from the floor, while Mia Hopkins was efficient at 5-of-8. Chevannah Paalvast also went 6-of-13 from the floor. Kasey Chambers had a solid all-around effort, shooting 4-of-8 to go along with a career-high six assists, while Jasmine Walker shot 3-of-6 with four assists. Paalvast also handed out five assists.

FURIOUS COMEBACK FALLS SHORT VS. IONAMonmouth went on a furious 23-3 run to cut a 24-point deficit with 9:22 left in the second half to three with less than two minutes to play against league-leading Iona on Jan. 24. Jenny Horvatinovic scored nine points in the run, while Jasmine Walker and Kasey Cham-bers added five points apiece. Iona eventually held on for a 86-77 victory.

HOPKINS HITS FOR 13Mia Hopkins scored a season-high 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including a three-pointer on her only attempt from long range, in 17 minutes at Siena on Jan. 13.

KID’S DAY SUCCESS Monmouth was 2-0 through two games in a three-game stretch of Kid’s Days, and had not trailed in either game, before falling Jan. 17 at Canisius. Monmouth defeated Canisius, 64-56, in its own Kid’s Day on Jan. 10 at the MAC. The Hawks then quieted a crowd of almost 2,000 kids on Jan. 13 at Siena, defeating the Saints, 64-49. Monmouth took its largest lead of the season (18) into the locker room at Siena, before extending the figure to 29 in the second half. The Hawks ended the stretch with a 60-52 defeat at Canisius in front of almost 2,200 screaming kids on Jan. 17. Monmouth also enjoyed a 52-41 win on Kid’s Day at Saint Peter’s on Jan. 30.

EVERYBODY CONTRIBUTESMonmouth got solid contributions from several players in its overtime victory over Fairfield on Jan 3. Always solid, Chevannah Paalvast scored a season-high 23 points to go along with two blocks and two steals. Jasmine Walker scored nine points, includ-ing five in overtime, and grabbed a career-high nine rebounds. Jamiyah Bethune, con-tinuing to show a flare for the dramatic, scored eight points, including the game-tying bucket in regulation and a pair of free throws to put the game on ice. Sara English also added six points, 10 rebounds, four assists and two blocks in her return to the starting line-up. Helena Kurt chipped in with six points, three rebounds, three steals and two assists, while Jenny Horvatinovic also scored six points on a solid 3-of-5 shooting.

INTERNATIONAL STARTING FIVEThe Hawks employed a starting line-up for four-straight games (Dec. 21-31) last season featuring five players from five different countries, including four different continents. Point guard Helena Kurt hails from Sweden (Europe), while Serbian cen-ter Danica Dragicevic also represented Europe. Forwards Shira Shecht (Israel, Asia) and Chevannah Paalvast (New Zealand, Australia) and guard Jasmine Walker (USA, North America) gave the Hawks a truly international feel from the opening tip.

MY OH JAMIYAHSophomore Jamiyah Bethune made a major impact in a short amount of time Dec. 29 against Saint Peter’s. After not seeing the court in the first 29 minutes of play, Bethune played the final 11 minutes and scored a team-high 14 points. Included in the point pro-duction was the game-tying three-pointer with 26 seconds left in regulation as part of a comeback from 16 points down with 10 minutes remaining.

WINDEX WOMENThe Hawks grabbed a season-high 52 rebounds, including 16 on the offense glass, last Dec. 22 against Eastern Michigan. Christina Mitchell led the way with seven boards, while five different Hawks had two offensive rebounds apiece.

COMMENDING KURTFreshman point guard Helena Kurt was named MAAC Rookie of the Week last Nov. 25 after averaging 8.8 points per game over four contests on the week, including a 10.7 points per game average in this weekend’s three games in the Basketball Hall of Fame Challenge against No. 1 UConn, St. Bonaventure and Boston University. The freshman Swede scored a season-high 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting, including 2-of-4 from long range, to go along with two assists against St. Bonaventure in 24 minutes. She then added a team-high nine points and two assists in 26 minutes against No. 1 Connecticut and 10 points and a season-high four assists on 4-of-6 shooting (2-of-4 3-pt. FG) in a season-high 29 min-utes. She shot 48.0 percent, including 37.5 percent from long range and 83.3 from the free-throw line on the week.
