2014/15 ACHIEVEMENTS

More than 80 professionals and health care experts were guests of Wellspring presenting their knowledge, tips, information and advice on a wide range of topics as part of Wellspring’s ongoing Discussion Series. Attendance at these sessions is free of charge and open to anyone to attend.

Two new programs, Taking Charge: Men’s Program and Program Navigation, were both successfully piloted, launched and introduced to the Wellspring community.

A series of videos explaining each of our many program offerings were filmed at Wellspring. The videos will serve as resource tools on the new website and the internet.

More than 3,000 new members joined Wellspring’s centres in the GTA and participated in program activity.

The City of Toronto named a downtown Toronto lane after Wellspring Cancer Support Foundation in recognition of the site of the first Wellspring centre – the Coach House on Wellesley Street. The naming ceremony was officiated by Toronto councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam.

A new website, complete with capabilities for online memberships, program registration and virtual programming, was developed for the entire Wellspring network. The new site will be introduced to the Wellspring community in the summer of 2015.

Wellspring donors and corporate supporters attended Champions of Wellspring, a special reception in their honour, featuring a presentation by acclaimed cancer researcher Dr. Tak Mak.

Wellspring Westerkirk House celebrated 15 years of having served the north Toronto community.

The 2014-15 year at Wellspring was one filled with many

rewarding achievements. The operations of the organization focused attention on expanded outreach opportunities; the development of strategic partnerships

with health partners; the introduction of new programs; the strengthening of relationships with our volunteers, and as always, membership growth. It was a year of tremendous progress on many fronts.

We took great effort to ensure we continually engaged our members, volunteers and partners in our plans. We focused on sharing information, and engaged in thousands of interactions through events, trainings, newsletters, social media interactions, stories told, presentations made and letters mailed. Each of these opportunities provided us with insights and understandings which will help inform our priorities and strategic directions for future years.

Strengthened relationships with local health service providers helped Wellspring foster new partnerships. This past year, we worked collaboratively on a number of new initiatives with both the Carlo Fidani Cancer Centre at Credit Valley Hospital and the Odette Cancer Centre at Sunnybrook. We will continue to encourage new relationships with other community partners in order to develop innovative initiatives that will ultimately allow us to reach more people who could benefit from our services.

We are always pleased to report a significant growth in our membership across the four greater Toronto area centres. In particular, we were delighted to see a significant growth in our newest Wellspring, the Downtown Toronto centre, and attribute much of this success to the recent physical transformation of the facility into the beautiful, warm and welcoming environment for which Wellspring has always been recognized.

We were delighted to recruit sixty new volunteers to assist with program delivery, facility maintenance, child minding, transportation and administrative responsibilities at the Wellspring Birmingham Gilgan House in Oakville. We were able to provide hands-on training on our updated processes and program delivery procedures for more than 350 of our long-serving volunteers.

This past year, important steps were taken to ensure the continued strength of the Wellspring network of centres. The management and oversight of the Wellspring Chinguacousy centre was transitioned to that of the GTA network of centres, and we continued to fully engage the network in both the quality review processes and the development of the new Wellspring website.

It was a busy year. New programs were launched; upgraded technologies were installed to assist in our administrative capabilities, and more than forty-five signature and third-party events were held to raise funds to support the provision of free programs and services for our members.

We continue to be humbled by the generosity of those who choose to support Wellspring with their donations. I extend my sincere gratitude to the many who so tirelessly and generously give of their time and their financial resources to support Wellspring and the communities we serve.

I was only 15 when I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, disrupting my high school career in a big way. A few years later, when I thought all was well, I had a recurrence. My friends were busy with hectic social lives and planning for college/university, and I was once again, pulled out on a cancer-break. Then, again, a couple years later, just when I thought my life was getting back in order, I was dealt yet another blow. I was diagnosed with breast cancer; totally unrelated to the earlier thyroid cancer.

An oncology nurse told me about Wellspring and soon my life began to change. At Wellspring I found support and the freedom to talk about my fears with others who were going through similar experiences. The Wellspring exercise program was exactly what I needed to patiently build back strength in my “new” body. But most importantly Wellspring gave me back my creativity. The Art Therapy program enabled me to express myself with ease, in a relaxed, non-judgemental environment. Sometimes it was an internal process, sometimes it was just a fun paint party. It is a great program, and a huge hit with other Wellspring members.

I am now preparing to return to school and it’s all because of Wellspring. The variety of programs offers something for every step of the cancer journey. It’s a comfort to know that Wellspring will continue to provide me with a community of support as I regain my health.

It had quickly turned from one of the best days of my life, to one of my worst.

I was still celebrating having given birth, only hours before, to my second child, when my world changed. I found a lump in my breast. How could I find within me the joy of being a mother to my children, 2 year old Elliot and the new and beautiful Maelle, when all I could envision was surgery, chemotherapy, scans and endless medical appointments?

I’m now a 38 year old woman with metastatic breast cancer, and the past three years have been like “whack-a-mole.” My cancer has spread to my lungs, it has invaded my liver and spine, and now brain metastases have left me unable to read or drive.

Living with a terminal illness is lonely and isolating but Wellspring has given me a community of others who understand what I’m going through. Wellspring is like a family who gives me support, boosts my confidence and helps me have a voice that is both heard and respected.

My loving husband Ian has shown great strength and incredible support over the past three years, but he is struggling with the responsibilities of being the primary caregiver for both me and the kids. Thankfully, Wellspring is here to help him as well. It is a warm, safe sanctuary, and a community of family that are all going through similar experiences.

A Better Way of Navigating

the Wellspring Programs

After more than a year of planning and development and a three month pilot that included the training of more than 350 volunteers, Wellspring officially launched a dynamic new method of program navigation to better assist our members in negotiating the selection of programs and services available to them at Wellspring.

Psychosocial care in cancer has come a long way since Wellspring first opened its doors in 1992. At that time, the idea of a cancer “community” was just beginning to emerge. There was limited understanding of what patients and their caregivers needed, or wanted, to support the human implications of cancer, and few organizations or programs were available apart from traditional hospital-based health care services.

Today the landscape is dramatically different. Many cancer hospitals have expanded services to include survivorship and patient education centres; there are cancer charities with supportive care services available regionally or provincially, and there are now options available for those considering private enterprises for programs or services relevant to the cancer experience. Even at Wellspring, the program base has expanded over the years from eight, to more than forty, and the organization has grown from one to seven centres in Canada.

Taking Charge: Men’s ProgramResearch shows that there are well-known gender differences in how health and wellness is managed. Receiving a cancer diagnosis is no different. Wellspring recognized that men needed a welcoming, confidential and understanding place where they could talk to one another, ask questions and share the fears, anxieties and uncertainties that come with a cancer diagnosis.

The Taking Charge: Men’s Program was launched at Wellspring Westerkirk House and Wellspring Birmingham Gilgan House, welcoming men living with cancer and men who are caregivers to a loved one with cancer. Each group meets on a monthly basis and the men come to talk!

So far those attending are men from diverse backgrounds with varying diagnoses. However, each has lived experiences with cancer which helps them find a common ground for discussion.

The session is facilitated by a professional group leader and a peer volunteer. There is no set agenda and the group usually discusses a variety of topics including mortality, sex and intimacy, side-effects of treatment and coping skills. It is a place where each man can be honest and open without the worry of judgement or lack of confidentiality. Friendships have been known to develop from within the group.

“Men find it easier to have these difficult conversations in a group setting with other ‘guys who get it’, says Paul Soren, MSW, RSW, cancer survivor and leader of Wellspring’s men’s program. Participating in a group helps both patients and caregivers feel less isolated and more connected to information and resources. It enables them to establish a network of peers, which is a vital step on the road to overall well-being.”

This year, Wellspring introduced Program Navigation as a strategic initiative to help both patients and caregivers navigate the often complex maze of psychosocial programs designed to favourably impact the cancer experience. The goal of this initiative was to ensure members were being directed to the specific type of help they need, at the right time in their cancer journey.

Wellspring’s already highly-skilled team of peer support volunteers were retrained to better understand each member’s unique circumstances and needs. From that understanding, and through the filter of the member’s general level of health, treatment schedule, work status, availability and energy levels, programs are then selected to best allow the member to participate and benefit as fully as possible. In addition, to ensure the member’s program plan is continually supported and guided throughout their time with Wellspring, the peer support volunteer will continue to serve as a source of contact, coordination and information for that member.

Evaluation of the new program has begun. Comments such as, “My peer support volunteer was perfectly aligned to my needs.” “She was an outlet of knowledge and comfort during a terrible time in my life,” and “I immediately felt like I was part of a family,” are helping us know that this approach is a step in the right direction.

10

In its recently completed 2015 fiscal year, Wellspring continued in its mission to provide the best supportive care programs and

services to individuals with a cancer diagnosis and to those who care for them. Throughout the year, more than 40,500 visits were made to the four houses offering these services in the greater Toronto area.

In the 2015 year, the Board of Directors of the Wellspring Cancer Support Foundation worked toward growing the Wellspring network across Canada. The network currently includes seven centres and plans are advanced for two more to be brought on stream in 2015.

The Board also focused on establishing a sustainable funding model for Wellspring. Significant effort was devoted to building continuity of support from major donors. In addition, throughout the year, Wellspring developed and implemented several programs for our members, and adopted a discipline in program delivery to ensure programs are delivered to the right individuals at the right time. All this is to ensure Wellspring is there to deliver relevant supportive care to those who need them now and in the future.

Wellspring operates its centres with significant involvement of volunteers. Our volunteers provide peer support, a welcoming environment for our members, help with administrative responsibilities, and assist in fundraising and operations for the Foundation. Many of our volunteers have provided

these services to our organization for over a decade. The involvement of volunteers is a critical aspect of the approach Wellspring takes to supportive cancer care. The Board recognizes the dedication of its volunteers with thanks.

The 2014 year was one of change and growth for Wellspring: new centres, new programs, new approaches. The management and staff of Wellspring implemented these changes with commitment and professionalism. Wellspring’s ability to continue to deliver the best supportive care to its members rests largely on the creativity and dedication of its program staff, management and operations staff. The Board thanks them for their continued commitment to the work of our foundation.

Our program delivery and our growth in the future depend on the continued generosity of our donors. In 2014, events like the extraordinary Henderson Hoedown, one of our outstanding signature events, raised $1.3 million. The Well Dressed for Spring Fashion Show, the Nine, Wine and Dine Golf Tournament, the Peloton Challenge and the many third party events held by communities on our behalf, raised $2,315,000. Donor gifts represented an additional $1,015,000. The Board is grateful for the generosity of the donors to Wellspring and thanks them for sustaining the delivery of critical supportive cancer care in our community.

2015 will be an exciting year. We anticipate growth in the Wellspring network and expansion of our programs. Our partnerships with volunteers, donors and the health care community are deepening and we will continue to build Wellspring while remembering the welcoming approach for which we have become known.
