As I write this message, the James A. Black Family Lobby is bursting with stacks of canned goods and teaming with students eagerly packing

them for delivery to supply local food pantries and agencies. While our students engage in stewardship drives throughout the year, they shift into high gear during November and December. In addition to our annual food drive, Student Council (STUCO) sponsors a blood drive in November and a toy drive in December. The Junior Catholic Daughters of America dedicate their fundraising and their energies to benefit local children’s agencies and food pantries. Several other school clubs conduct toiletry, diaper and clothing drives and volunteer their time to assist those in need. Students have wrapped up their fourth Stewardship for Justice campaign of the year, and they are on track to match or better last year’s collections of over $8,000. Our students broke records in 2015 with their Raffle ticket sales, raising over $250,000! Not to be outdone, our parents, alumni and friends ensured that both the 2014 SPX Fund and the Gala were the most successful ever!

This outpouring of generosity speaks volumes of the nature of stewardship at St. Pius X High School. Ours is a

giving community which recognizes the importance of acknowledging our blessings and responding in kind. But this generous response is only one of the kinds of stewardship in evidence during the past year.

Stewardship also entails caring for those things that have been entrusted to us. For the SPX community, that form of stewardship is profound. It includes fostering the Dominican charism in our current students and their families and encouraging it in our Dominican family and in future generations. It means nurturing those traditions that ensure our students and alumni remain Panthers forever. And it encompasses our responsibility to maintain and preserve the physical plant and this campus that have served generations of the SPX community so well.

Over the course of the last year, a long-held facilities dream was realized when our vintage window air conditioning was replaced by a new HVAC system. With that change and the replacement of the original windows, the learning environment in our classrooms improved significantly as they became quieter and more comfortable. We were also able to acquire two more parcels of land on Shepherd Drive which will

enable our campus and our facilities to meet future needs. And, importantly, over the course of the year we laid the foundations to implement the next phase of our master plan, the construction of the Center for the Sciences and Media.

This annual report to donors is not only our yearly “thank you” to the many individuals, corporations, and foundations who help to provide a stable foundation for our School; it is also an opportunity to glimpse those who benefit from those gifts and learn of their success stories. Dear family and friends, we trust you will agree that we steward your gifts well at St. Pius X High School! For you and your generosity and support, we are grateful - thank you!

During the 2014-15 school year, the members of the St. Pius X High School community took these inspirational words of

St. Catherine of Siena (a member of the Dominican family and a patron saint of Italy) to heart – there were many fires blazing on W. Donovan!

• Financing was secured for construction of the Center for the Sciences and Media – the final phase of the Set the World Ablaze campaign. This state-of-the-art facility is being constructed during the 2015-16 school year and will house classes associated with the school’s STEM-related curriculum.

• Additional improvements were made to campus facilities, most significantly the addition of mini-split air conditioners to the classrooms. This improvement paves the way for the removal of the window air conditioning units and the installation of new classroom windows during the 2015-16 school year.

• For the second year in-a-row, the SPX Annual Fund raised over $500,000. The community’s support of this fund is crucial to the School’s tuition-assistance program, the School’s ability to receive matching grants from local and national foundations, and the School’s ability to continue to enhance the school facilities.

• Insurance and retirement benefits to the faculty and staff were increased, thanks to the work of the School Board’s Benefits Committee. This committee continues to study ways to support the incredible faculty and staff who love, nurture and inspire our children.

• The sports teams continued to excel on both the district and state levels: the boys soccer team was the district champion for the first time since 2006; the softball team was the district champion and a member of the state final four; the boys basketball team was a member of the state final four for the second consecutive year; and the district golf champions for both boys and girls were SPX students who also were named to the all-state golf team.

• The Fine Arts Department continued to shine with student awards for the Del Sarto yearbook and outstanding performances at the TAPPS State Music Contest.

These fires were fueled by everyone who contributed to St. Pius X High School this year - whether through time spent as a teacher/administrator/staff member, volunteer assistant coach or a team/club parent, through gifts to the Annual Fund, through hours researching the best and most economical options for campus improvements, or through attending sporting events and being patrons of the concession stands. Without your continued support, SPX would not be able to sustain the fires that started when it first opened its doors in 1956. On behalf of my fellow School Board members, we thank you and look forward to seeing even bigger fires next year!

Every year, the list of benefactors grows with new friends who join the dedicated and consistent donors who have supported St. Pius X for many years. Each of these gifts is needed and appreciated.

Every gift is put to good use, whether it be to provide financial aid, construct, renovate or maintain facilities or develop new academic programs.
