Dear Prayer Partner:

We are so grateful for all who regularly use the annual PAACS Prayer Guide to pray daily for PAACS. This sixth edition is larger than its

predecessors because PAACS continues to grow as our combined efforts bear fruit. At the time this volume reaches your hands, we will have 58 resi-

dents from 15 different African countries and one from Bangladesh. In January 2015, that number will rise to 66 in training. By January of 2015, we will have 37 who have finished the general surgery training and six who

have finished the pediatric general surgery training programs. We think it very likely that we will reach our seemingly impossible goal of training 100 surgeons by 2020.

This past year, three new programs have opened – one at Harpur Memorial Hospital in Menouf, Egypt (see Day 20); Arusha Lutheran Medical Center, in conjunction with Selian Hospital, in Arusha, Tanzania (Day 21)

and the Malamulo Adventist Hospital in Makwasa, Malawi (Day 23). The program in Bangladesh has re-opened (Day 21). We have also opened the orthopedic track at Tenwek Hospital and the first class of future orthopedic

surgeons is in their first year of general surgery. Actual training in ortho-pedics will begin in January of 2016. PAACS is poised to make the next big step as an organization. A

search committee is actively seeking the man or woman who will become the next Executive Director and that person will help create a salaried ad-

ministrative and development structure that will help us grow into the next stage. We expect our budget to triple over three years. I will step down as Executive Director but stay on as the Chief Medical Officer, allowing me to

return to my first love – working directly with the residents and career mis-sionaries to teach surgery and disciple residents. It has been an honor and a pleasure since 2006 to lead PAACS in its growth.

Spiritual warfare remains our constant companion as we seek to serve our Lord in Africa. It takes the fervent prayer of a dedicated team of believers like you to hope to gain victory. Thank you for praying with us!

Yours, for the peoples of Africa.

Bruce C. Steffes, MD, MBA, MA, FACS, FWACS, FCS(ECSA), FICS Executive Director, PAACS

Day 1

Prayer Topic: PAACS as an organization The Pan-African Academy of Christian Surgeons trains and disciples young

African physicians in Africa, for Africa with the expectation of a lifetime of

service. Those young men and women are doing the hardest thing they

have ever done. The ministry is carried out by people who need prayer in

an environment that demands prayer. Please consider praying daily for

PAACS—faculty, trainees and administration. This prayer guide has one

topic per day for 30 days. If you use this faithfully, in a year you will have

prayed at least twelve times for everything listed. If you get our newslet-

ter, the PAACS Bulletin, please use the last page of this Prayer Guide to add

the things listed under the prayer needs each month. If you don’t get our

newsletter, and want to stay current in what is happening, then please sign

up at http://paacs.net/involved/paacs-resources/paacs-bulletin/.

Carry this Prayer Guide with your Bible, putting it by your bedside stand, on

your desk or wherever you will see it regularly. Please pray for us. Pray

that God’s name will be glorified and that His saving health will be known

among the nations (Ps 67:2—KJV).

Suggested items for prayer:

1. That we will remain focused on educational excellence and evangelism for Christ’s honor and glory.

2. That we will impact Africa for the Kingdom.

3. That we will expand into the 10-40 window as God permits. 4. That God will help us recruit the right administrative people for this

next big expansion of PAACS.

5. That God will speak to general surgeons who wish to give their live in training African physicians and serving their Lord.

6. That God will provide the financial resources to carry out the vision.

7. That many will come to know Christ through the efforts of PAACS sur-geons and residents.

PAACS MISSION STATEMENT

PAACS exists to train and disciple African surgeons to glorify God and to

provide excellent, compassionate care to those most in need.

PAACS VISION STATEMENT

We envision African surgeons living the Gospel and ministering to the sick.

PAACS SATEMENT OF FAITH

We believe that the Bible, in its entirety, is the only inspired, inerrant

Word of God.

We believe that there is one God eternally existent in three persons:

the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. We believe that Jesus Christ is God the Son, born of a virgin, fully God

and fully man, who willingly died on the cross for the sins of Man and rose from the dead to sit at the right hand of the Father.

We believe that the forgiveness of sin and the gift of eternal life come

only through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ. We believe in the ministry of the Holy Spirit who indwells those who are

born again by the Spirit of God, and enables believers to live a godly

life. We believe in the personal return of Jesus Christ to reign in power and

glory on the earth. He will judge the saved and the lost – the saved will receive eternal life and the lost will receive everlasting punishment.

We believe in the unity of all believers who love, worship and obey Je-

sus Christ as the Son of God. We believe that it is the duty of all who love and obey Jesus Christ to

proclaim His gospel to their neighbors and to the world and to respond with compassion to the suffering around them in the ways that Jesus did, regardless of race, religion, nationality, or social status.

PAACS GOAL

We want to train and disciple 100 surgeons by the year 2020.

Government Issues for PAACS

In order that our hospitals and graduates take their rightful place in and show proper respect for and compliance with their host countries,

PAACS continues to seek and support efforts for full government recogni-tion. COSECSA specialist certificates are also not yet recognized by all the

countries in which it operates. Kenya and Tanzania (the home of CO-SECSA) are examples of that. Our training programs in Tanzania, Malawi, Gabon, Cameroon and Niger are all awaiting formal governmental recogni-

tion. The Ethiopian programs continue to surmount various governmental hurdles. Please pray that those programs and hospitals will receive ap-proval.

In general, there remains great pressure to make our programs secular and to admit more than we can properly train or afford to train. We prefer to remain the Pan-African Academy of Christian Surgeons doing the

best job possible and request your prayers to that end.

Spiritual Ministry within PAACS

Our mission statement for PAACS states that we want to train and disciple. We believe that healing should be holistic and that physical heal-

ing is temporal but spiritual healing is eternal. In 2012, we appointed Rev. Stan Key to take the new role of Spiri-tual Dean. He ranks evenly with the Academic Dean; that is intentional. As

a group which works with people from many different churches, denomina-tions and mission agencies, it is not always easy to find materials that help

us keep our eyes first and foremost on Christ. Stan, with the help of many, has rolled out volume one of the five year curriculum and volume two is close behind. It will be published within a month or two. One will follow

each year thereafter until we have a full-five year curriculum. Since disci-pling is best done in a heart language, we would like to have French lan-guage versions. Much of the material is already available in French but the

translation of the rest will require a significant investment. Please pray for Pastor Key as he develops this material. Pray for the Program Directors as they have responsibility to oversee the spiritual aspects of the PAACS pro-

gram as well as the medical. Pray that all the residents would "grow in grace and the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ" (II Peter 3:18). Pray most of all that our patients will come to a saving knowledge of Jesus

Christ. Please pray that God would protect the witness of the PAACS program in Africa in powerful ways.

PAACS FACTS

PAACS is a Commission of the Christian Medical & Dental Associations.

It has been estimated that there are 56M sub-Saharan Africans who will

need surgery today. There is only 1 surgeon of any type for every 250K to 2.5M people.

Ten PAACS African training programs are presently active in Gabon,

Cameroon, Ethiopia, Niger, Egypt, Tanzania, Kenya (3), Malawi and Bangladesh utilizing eleven different hospitals. Ancillary training sites

(for specialty rotations) are in Kenya and South Africa. PAACS started its first program in Africa and took its first resident in

1997. As of September 2014, 37 general surgeons and 6 pediatric sur-

geons will have completed training. All graduates (100%) are serving in low-resource areas or are seeking additional training.

Until recently, PAACS administration had only one paid person—an ad-

ministrative assistant. However, we will soon be converting to a part-

salaried, mostly-volunteer administration in order to meet the needs of an expanded program. Seven percent of the donations are paid to the

Christian Medical & Dental Associations home office to cover the legal, book-keeping, accounting, tax-reporting and insurance.

As was true in 2012, in December 2013, the top three scores for the

COSECSA (College of Surgery of East, Central and Southern Africa) ex-

aminations were again achieved by PAACS residents. Dave Thompson, the founder of PAACS, has left Gabon and has started

a new program in Egypt, the first in the Arabic-speaking lands.

The cash budget for 2014-2015 is approximately $1.35M. This does

not include approximately $200K of direct stipend support and $500K in indirect support which goes directly to the benefit of the trainees and

comes from the hospitals and the missionary-raised funds. Additionally, all the donated time and services from long and short term missionar-ies exceeds $3.5 million.

Six of our graduates are presently PAACS faculty. One has left to teach

at a university teaching program. We now have two teaching in secular programs. All of our graduates have remained in Africa. Over 70% are

presently in mission hospitals and most of the remainder are in govern-ment district hospitals.

PAACS has a five-year curriculum based on the N. American community

-based training model. Residents must serve one year in an approved location for each year they receive training.
