...to fulfill Our Mission

The Academy of Our Lady of Peace (OLP) is a rigorous four-year college preparatory school with an unparalleled leadership program and variety of co-curricular activities. Founded in 1882, OLP has faithfully served families of San Diego County for the past 132 years. Young women are educated in the spirit of excellence and innovation that characterizes the founding Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet.

Our MissionAs a Catholic school, we are committed to helping our students become active participants in building Christ’s kingdom of justice, love and peace. As a school rooted in the values of the Sisters of St. Joseph, OLP promotes the cultivation of “gentleness, peace and joy” as we respond to the needs of the “dear neighbor” both in our midst and in our human community. Through our college preparatory program, our mission is to empower our students to become knowledgeable in skills needed to achieve success in post-secondary studies, and to make informed and values-driven decisions in the context of today’s world. As a result of these endeavors, and working with parents as our educational partners providing a family context of faith-in-action, the Academy of Our Lady of Peace strives to graduate responsible women educated to the needs of society.

...to go full STEAM ahead

At OLP, we help our students develop the skills necessary to take on any challenge. We offer 47 classes in the STEAM disciplines.

Our rigorous curriculum includes access to more than 47 classes in the STEAM disciplines.

Science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) subjects are integrated into our rigorous curriculum, giving our girls the opportunity to learn and innovate across a variety of disciplines.

We are committed to supporting our the passions of our students and educating the next generation of female leaders and innovators in all fields.

The Need for Women in STEM

The STEM fields are at the core of innovation and will shape the future of our world, however, women are underrepresented in these critical areas.

• Only 5.5% to 22.3% of civil, industrial, chemical and mechanical engineers are women, and they represent just a quarter of the workforce involved with computer and mathematical sciences. (Huffington Post Article, “Why is STEM Still a 4-Letter Word for Women,” July 2014)

• Although women fill close to half of all jobs in the U.S. economy, they hold less than 25% of STEM jobs. (U.S. Department of Commerce)

• Only 24% of technology jobs are currently held by women. This is a decrease from 36% in 1991. (National Center for Women & Information Technology at the University of Colorado, Boulder)

• Only 1/5 of physics Ph.D.s in the country are awarded to women, and only half of those women are American. Of all the physics professors in the U.S., only 14% are women. (New York Times Article, “Why Are There Still So Few Women in Science,” Oct. 2013)

OLP instilled in me a strong sense of work ethic and dedication that has proved invaluable throughout my undergraduate chemistry major and currently in medical school. I would not be where I am today without the strong education and academic mentoring I received in my four years at OLP.

--Megan Coughlin ’08. 2012 graduate of U.S. Naval Academy and currently beginning her third year of medical school at Georgetown University

OLP students regularly mentor children at Joyner Elementary school in San Diego through the STEM council of Rotary Club 33.

The OLP MicroChicks Robotics Team received a FIRST Tech Challenge grant from NDEP (National Defense Education Program) and FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) to cover start-up costs for the team. In addition to this grant, women engineers from Naval Air Systems Command mentor the team weekly.

...to Lead

OLP students are empowered and prepared to be the leaders of tomorrow because the rigorous college preparatory curriculum at OLP ensures they become “all of which woman is capable.”

There are more than 340 leadership opportunities available annually encompassing many realms of campus life, including student life, athletics and the performing arts.

The Student Council at OLP is comprised of more than 50 elected student leaders with the common goal of planning school activities and, at the same time, making the school year exciting and memorable.

Leadership experiences at OLP help prepare our graduates for college and beyond.

Leadership By the Numbers:

99%: The percentage of OLP graduates who consistently go on to higher education

724: The number of college & university acceptances the class of 2014 was offered

209: The class of 2014 was accepted by 209 unique colleges & universities

67%: The percentage of the class of 2014 that was offered at least one scholarship from a college or university

$17.6 Million: The amount of merit-based scholarships offered to the169 members of the class of 2014

Leadership at OLP is mired in the idea that women are leaders. There aren’t any “ifs,” “ands,” or “buts” about it. OLP inspired in me a desire to be a student of the world, not only accepting, but also appreciative, of that which makes us individuals. The leadership program taught me to trust that I have the skill set, intelligence, and confidence to be an effective leader in all aspects of life.

...toward faith & service

Founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in 1882, OLP has successfully educated young women for more than 132 years to meet the needs of society.

The OLP Department of Religious Studies operates from the CSJ tradition of “Faith in Action”. The curriculum is rooted in balancing formation with information and is integrated across all disciplines under the guidance of the tradition of the Roman Catholic Church.

With the integration of a Campus Ministry program rooted in student leadership, students are encouraged to engage in their faith and lead others through a vibrant faith experience. Religious studies in the classrooms is complemented with class level retreats for all grade levels. Liturgies are planned by students and led by visiting Priests from all over San Diego Diocese.

The Department of Campus Ministry facilities opportunities for our community to explore our Catholic faith and CSJ charism, including:

We invite our OLP graduates to return to the campus chapel for

their wedding ceremony as well!

OLP women serve in local and international communities; excellence tempered with gentleness, peace and joy, modeled after the legacy of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet.

Students are required to complete 85 hours of service by the time of graduation, however, most go above and beyond the minimum requirements because the culture of our community is that of serving the “dear neighbor.”

...to create & perform

The philosophy of the Visual & Performing Arts Department is based on the principle that the arts are an essential and fundamental component of a sound education.

Education in the arts is an important and necessary endeavor that nurtures the spiritual, moral, psychological and social growth of all students.

OLP offers a variety of visual & performing arts options including campus student organizations, theatre performances, competitions and special programs and classes.

Campus Student Organizations

• National Art Honor Society (NAHS) is designed specifically for high school students in grades 9-12, for the purpose of inspiring and recognizing those students who have shown an outstanding ability in the visual arts.

• The International Thespian Society has been honoring excellence in the work of theatre students since 1929. Each year OLP’s Thespian Troupe 4843 performs in a play in the Spring and then uses to proceeds to travel to Thespian Conference in Lincoln, Nebraska to learn about and compete for scholarships. At the end of the year, students can earn an “Honor Thespian” letter through 60 hours of work in the department, or an “Honor Thespian Scholar” award for 60 hours and a 3.5 GPA.

• Choral Club is open to all students and participates in all liturgies and arts festivals.

The Memory ProjectThe Memory Project is a unique initiative in which art students create portraits for children and teens around the world who have been neglected, orphaned or disadvantaged. Members of the National Art Honor Society have created portraits for children in Rwanda, Haiti, Vietnam, Philippines and Afghanistan.

OLP National Art Honor Society students created portraits of children who had very few photos to serve as memories from their early years.

The students created portraits for youth from around the world who have been neglected, orphaned or disadvantaged. The children then keep the portraits as a positive memory of their childhood.
