20142014 A Look Back

You, our friends and donors, helped make 2014 a very good year at the Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum. Thank you.

As you look at the slides following this message, I hope you will be pleased when you see what your support helped us accomplish at the Museum: art conservation and digitization projects; temporary exhibitions that were seen by 18,000 visitors; the John Bredar lecture and Seungmo Park video interview; student intern project; dedication of the new museum entrance and the Jo Anne and Donald Petersen sculpture garden; youth educational programs and teacher workshops; and the Saints, Sinners and Shenanigans gala.

You delight and inspire us in all we do.

Preserving the Legacy of Marshall M. FredericksLegacies are worth preserving, especially those like Marshall Fredericks. A person’s legacy is defined by what they accomplished, how they lived their lives, and how others will characterize and celebrate that person. Marshall Fredericks created and left the world a magnificent legacy, one that his family and friends are proud of an will honor always. Things that are worth keeping, honoring and celebrating must be preserved. Three museum endowments--education, conservation, exhibitions--are in need of growing so that we can preserve the legacy of one of America’s most important 20th century public sculptors and the integrity of the Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum.

Please consider making a donation today to support the Preserving the Legacy of Marshall M. Fredericks Campaign.

MARCHMARCHStudent InternThird year SVSU student, Bailey McCarthy Riley, served as an intern on the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) digitization grant project. During her internship, she learned fundamental skills in archives management, online content management and digitization. An aspiring art conservator, Bailey also learned about art handling and the various types of media and techniques artists use during their creative process.

SEPTEMBERSEPTEMBER Saints, Sinners and Shenanigans

Saints, Sinners & Shenanigans was a whopping success. It’s no Irish shenanigans when an event raises $75,000, thanks to title sponsor The Dow Chemical Company and many other sponsors; our fabulous co-chairs, Madeline Burke and Avril Roundtree and a dedicated planning committee; an outstanding SVSU Conference Center and Dining Services, Art Department, Theatre Department, Office of University Communications, and Graphics Center; 56 regional artists whose donated works were bid up feverishly during the silent and live auctions; a cadre of volunteers – and – a sell-out crowd of event-goers who made the evening come alive.

SEPTEMBERSEPTEMBER Seungmo ParkMeticulously Snipped and Wrapped

Just when you thought you had seen every type and genre of art, an artist and his unique work arrive that leaves everyone who sees it asking, “How does he do that?” That was the number one question at the Museum while Seungmo Park’s Meticulously Snipped and Wrapped exhibition was at the Museum. The Dennos Museum Center was the originator of the exhibition.

SEPTEMBERSEPTEMBERIMLS Grant

In September, Archivist Melissa Ford finished a yearlong project funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to digitize 815 of Marshall Fredericks's project drawings. Completion of this project provides art scholars, historians, students, and artists with access to the drawings for research and education, enhancing understanding of the artist’s artistic process and development. Digitization will also protect this fragile artistic material from excessive handling and resulting deterioration.
