AIA Minnesota is proud to announce that Julie Snow, FAIA, principal at Snow Kreilich Architects, is the AIA Minnesota 2014 Gold Medal recipient. The Gold Medal is AIA Minnesota’s highest award bestowed upon an individual member. It serves as recognition for a lifetime of distinguished achievement and significant contributions to architecture.

The Gold Medal selection jury considered many criteria for the award including each candidate’s significant contributions and distinguishing achievements, professional practice, design, education, mentorship, AIA involvement, public presence, and legacy.

AIA Minnesota President Tom Hysell, AIA, said, “Julie Snow deserves the Gold Medal and so much more. Her body of work has consistently exemplified the excellence in Minnesota design. Her graceful modernism—from elegant cantilevered spaces in oceanfront houses to the elegant rooflines of U.S. border stations—achieves simplicity that only comes from the highest rigor in design and attention to detail.”

Julie graduated from the University of Colorado with a Bachelor of Architecture degree. After living and working abroad for several years she came to Minneapolis, working for several small firms before spending six years at HGA. She began her practice in the midst of a recession, while teaching at the College of Architecture at the University of Minnesota.

Julie now leads, along with Matt Kreilich, AIA, a studio-based practice, Snow Kreilich Architects, located in Minneapolis. The studio’s diverse scale and type of work is joined by a common exploration of material and detail. Its interest in pragmatic and critical programmatic reflection results in innovative designs that expand the understanding of architectural performance.

Join us in celebrating this honor with Julie Snow, FAIA, at the “Let’s Celebrate” Awards dinner on Dec. 5. Learn more at http://www.aia-mn.org/get-involved/aia-minnesota-awards/gold-medal/

60th Annual

Honor Awards

GOOD TIMES FOR THE PROFESSION Largest increase in billings in over seven years.

September brings memories of going back to school and knowing that the summer is almost over (especially since the State Fair has just finished). We also get to look ahead to the fall — with some folks sending their own kids to school, while others are looking forward to the Homes By Architects Tour on September 20 and 21, and still others are starting their presentations for our 80th Annual Convention. All-in-all autumn is a busy time. According to the AIA Architecture Billing Index (ABI), it is also a good time for the profession with the largest increase in billings in over seven years. There seem to be a lot of RFPs to respond to right now.

The board and our committees continue to engage with the AIA Repositioning and making sure that AIA Minnesota is serving our membership on the highest level. I especially enjoyed welcoming component executives from across the country at the CACE Annual Meeting in August since it is always fun to tout all of the great things that we are doing — you should know that AIA Minnesota is known as a national leader in providing the best programs and support to our members.

On the national front, input is needed on the AIA Public Policy and Position Statements; the AIA annually reviews its public policies and position statements to make sure they reflect the concerns and views of its membership. Please read and comment on the statements up for review this year at http://svy.mk/1oeqGW3. Deadline for member comments is September 30.

So with summer quickly exiting, we should all remember why we live and work in Minnesota — great quality of life, great arts & music, strong interest in the best in design and architecture and, of course, we do know that summer will return once again next year. Have a good productive fall.
