Culture

2014 Financials at a Glance

Connecting the Creative Sector

The Arts Alliance: Serving Washtenaw County’s Creative Sector

The arts help us express our values, build bridges between cultures

and bring us together regardless of ethnicity, religion or age.

Arts and culture drives tourism.

The Conference board reports that creativity is among the top five skills

sought by business leaders.

U.S. exports of arts goods (e.g. movies, paintings, jewelry) grew to

$72 billion in 2011.

Research done by the University of Pennsylvania has demonstrated that

cities with a high concentration of the arts have more social cohesion,

higher civic engagement, higher child well-being, and lower poverty rates.

78% of art programs provided by healthcare institutions resulted in

shorter hospital stays and better pain management, lowering medication

costs.

A 2014 analysis of Dun & Bradstreet data counts 750,453 businesses in the U.S. involved in the creation

of distribution of arts employs 3.1 million people.

Students with an education rich in the arts and culture have higher

GPAs, higher standardized test scores and lower drop-out rates.

The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis reports that the arts and culture

sector represents 3.25% of the GDP, a larger share than tourism and

agriculture.

Attendees to non-profit events spend $24.60 per person beyond the cost of admission on items including meals,

parking and babysitters.

With and on behalf of Washtenaw’s creative sector, we:

FacilitateExplore issues, conduct research, foster and administer creative initiatives.

AdvocateVoice the creative sector’s impact on quality of life and place.

CommunicatePromote creative sector programs and collaborative initiatives.

EducateEncourage life-long creative learning programs.

etc.)• 244 cultural organizations and businesses (visual,

performing, science, museums, etc.) • and 1,328 creative industries.
