WELCOME LETTER
Dear Colleagues:
Welcome to the 2014 Nationwide Children’s Hospital annual research retreat. This event is a terrific way for our faculty and trainees to interact, share their work, and hear the work of an invited national expert, Dr. Walter Orenstein, Associate Director of the Emory Vaccine Center and Professor of Medicine, Pediatrics and Global Health at Emory University. Dr. Orenstein is also an investigator at the Emory Center for AIDS Research and the Di-rector of the Influenza Pathogenesis and Immunology Research Center, one of five national Centers of Excellence for Influenza Research and Surveillance funded by the NIH/NIAID. We will also publically recognize the outstanding work of our trainees through our awards program.
Please take the opportunity to appreciate the full spectrum of research expertise on our campus ranging from epidemiology, outcomes, clinical, translational and basic laboratory science research. Doing so will strengthen our collective discovery efforts in the name of our noble goal of better health for children and their families.
Sincerely yours,
John Barnard, MDAnn I. Wolfe Endowed Chair in Pediatric ResearchPresident, The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital Professor and Vice-Chair, Department of PediatricsThe Ohio State University College of Medicine

LUNCH SPEAKER
Jorge Cham, PhD, was born and raised in the Republic of Panama. He is the creator of Piled Higher and Deeper (PhD), the comic strip about life (or the lack thereof ) in Academia. Often called the Dilbert of academia, PHD has appeared in the Stanford, MIT, Caltech and Carnegie Mellon newspapers among others, and is published online where it receives over 8 million visitors a year from over 1000 universities and colleges worldwide.
Jorge obtained his B.S. from Georgia Tech and his M.S. and Ph.D. from Stanford University, specializing in Robotics. He was subsequently an Instructor and Research Associate at Caltech from 2003-2005, where his work focused on developing “Smart” Neural Implants. He is also a founding board member of Endeavor College Prep, a non-profit school for kids in East L.A., and co-founder of PHDtv, a video science and discovery outreach collaborative that aims to close the gap between researchers and the public.
Jorge travels and presents all over the world to thousands of graduate students, faculty and administrators on the graduate student experience. To date, one screenplay, “The PHD Movie,” and five PHD book collections have been published. He lives near Los Angeles with his family.
KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Walter Orenstein, MD, is a professor in the departments of medicine, epidemiology, global health, and pediatrics and recently returned to Emory University in October 2011. From 2008 through 2011, Dr. Orenstein was Deputy Director for Immunization Programs in the Vaccine Delivery department of the Global Health Program at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. His primary focus at the foundation had been on polio eradication, measles control, and improving routine immunization programs.
Between 2004 and 2008, he was a professor of medicine and pediatrics at Emory University, associate director of the Emory Vaccine Center and director of the Emory Program on Vaccine Policy and Development. Prior to 2004, he served as a former Assistant Surgeon General of the United States Public Health Service and director of the National Immunization Program at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), where Dr.
Orenstein successfully developed, promoted, facilitated and expanded new vaccination strategies to enhance disease prevention.
Dr. Orenstein has authored and co-authored numerous books, journals and reviews. Along with Stanley Plotkin, MD, and Paul Offit, MD, Dr. Orenstein co-edited Vaccines, 6th edition in 2012 – the leading textbook in the field. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society. In 2006, Dr. Orenstein was elected to the Institute of Medicine. He is a past chair of the WHO’s Poliomyelitis Technical Consultative Group and is currently chair of the National Vaccine Advisory Committee (NVAC) under the National Vaccine Program Office (NVPO) in the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
