He asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” He replied, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he in- vited Philip to get in and sit beside him. Acts 8:26 Last month during our congregational council meeting, the council agreed to begin looking for ways to journey faithfully together as a congregation. Beginning in 2015 we will start a three year focus on our life together and asking how God is calling us forward. The priority for 2015 will be engagement. Engagement is a measure of defining how deeply our lives are affected by the grace of Jesus Christ as we live together in community. Just like Philip in the story above from Acts, we are all called by the Holy Spirit to help our fellow travelers to gain a clearer understanding of the promises that God has made to us. God contin- ues to use you and me as we work together to share the Good News that Jesus Christ is alive and at work in the world. By serving others and by learning together, we are fed and strengthened in our own life and living. As in the passage above, we are left asking the question, “How can I, unless some- one guides me?” We are called to live lives full of grace and peace but the "how" of that calling often seems a mystery that we cannot figure out on our own. We need a community of faith to encourage us to move forward. As individuals and as a con- gregation, we will be asked, “How can we fully live into this life to which we have been called?” How are you engaged in the life of your church and how can we invite you to travel the life of faith in a more meaningful way? These are questions that we will be ask- ing together out of love for God and our fellow Christians. God's peace Pastor Jason

August 2014

Then the Spirit said to Philip, “Go over to this chariot and join it.” So Philip ran up to it and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah. He asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” He replied, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he in-vited Philip to get in and sit beside him. God contin-ues to use you and me as we work together to share the Good News that Jesus Christ is alive and at work in the world. By serving others and by learning together, we are fed and strengthened in our own life and living. As in the passage above, we are left asking the question, “How can I, unless some-one guides me?” We are called to live lives full of grace and peace but the "how" of that calling often seems a mystery that we cannot figure out on our own. We need a community of faith to encourage us to move forward. As individuals and as a con-gregation, we will be asked, “How can we fully live into this life to which we have been called?” How are you engaged in the life of your church and how can we invite you to travel the life of faith in a more meaningful way? These are questions that we will be ask-ing together out of love for God and our fellow Christians.

Many, many thanks to all who attended the birthday party at White Oak

Manor on July 8th. It was a wonderful celebration for residents who had

birthdays in the month of July! The planning committee especially thanks

Alan Bickley, Wilfred Dominick, Ray Hawkins and Pastor Schafer for their

musical entertainment.

Dear St. Luke family and friends,

Words cannot express the appreciation of your kind expression of sym-

pathy that was shown to us at the loss of our loved one “Earle”.

Thanks for the many acts of kindness with prayers, thoughts, cards, flow-

ers, visits, calls, memorials and especially the delicious food. Thanks again

for all your concern and may God richly bless you and your family as he

has richly blessed us in so many ways.

With Christian Love,

Fran Merchant and family

Thank you for all your prayers, cards, calls and words of encouragement. A

special thanks to Pastor Schafer for all his calls and being with me and my

family during my recent surgeries.

God Bless You All,

Tim Connelly

Day Camp 2014 is in the books and what a great week it was! Thirty-four (34!) children spent the week with five counselors and an area director learning about God and the seasons of the church year, singing songs, making cool crafts, snacking, swimming, and laughing. Twenty-two children spent the night at the church on Thursday night and had even more fun with songs, skits, games and The Lego Movie. Many, many hands helped make light work of the week and I must say a BIG "THANK YOU!!!" to the fol-lowing folks:

Dana Green and Donna Eustace for all of the administrative, behind-the-scenes

work that you do. I appreciate you being the list-keepers and money tracker!

Penny Ballantyne and family for hosting our counselors. Thank you for

sharing your home with six strangers for the week!

Wayne & Delores Nichols for the use of your pool. ALL of us enjoyed our

time there.

Mary Beth Richardson, Linda Sheppard, and Robin Icard for all of their hard

work in the kitchen. There is one thing that I can promise about Day Camp: NO ONE goes hungry. The snacks and lunches this year were the best ever!!!

Pastor Jason and Mitzie for feeding our counselors, both physically and

spiritually.

Savannah Lever, Calen McManus, Alana Eargle, Ben Hawkins, and Elise

Mills for volunteering time during their summer break to serve, clean, and make Messy Day happen (and then make it look like Messy Day didn't happen).

Sarah Eargle for her time and, most of all, support. Day Camp is much

better with great help by your side!

Pastor Jason for his spiritual leadership and support during the week.

The congregation of St. Luke's for making this ministry possible. I know that this week is not cheap, but seeing children from our community worshiping and enjoying each other in our building, knowing that each one is fed and nourished by The Word and the members of our church, makes the money seem like pocket change. Thank you for your prayers, support, time, and effort.

Deann

Pastor Greg Moore, Ministries Coordinator

“Moore’s Musings and Ministry Moments”

Manna House Tote Bags - Food Donations.

What is this ministry? It is a cooperative effort by WELCA, Lutheran Men In

Mission, Youth Ministry, and the Local Service Project Task Force.

What is the Manna House? Manna House is a community-supported and mul-

tiple churches-supported ministry that provides food and household items, rent and

electric bill emergency funds. It is a South Carolina registered, non-profit, 501C3 or-

ganization, with a volunteer Board of Directors. There is a place on the Board for a

member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, as we are a supporting church. It is located at

and administered by the Newberry County Department of Social Services Office.

How do collect donations? The plan and intention is:

for the members take one of the red tote bags home the second Sunday

of the month;

to return the bag on the third Sunday of the month;

for the bags to be brought to the front of the sanctuary on the fourth Sun-

day for prayers of thanksgiving to be blessed;

then taken to Manna House the week after the fourth Sunday of the

month.

Why are the Manna House Tote Bag donations important? The need for

these donations increases when school is out over the summer months for 2 reasons:

1) many school-age children need the breakfast and lunch served at the schools for

their daily nutrition, when school is out many of the children miss those meals; 2) dona-

tions to Manna House are lowest during the summer months, when the need is the

highest.

Did you attend Sunday School during the March/April/May 2014 quarter? If not. Why? You are never too young or too old to learn from Bible teachings that are heard in Sun-day School. Let’s make a concerted effort to be present and bring our children to Sun-day School at all times! After checking Sunday School roll books, it was discovered that the following persons had perfect attendance for the third quarter: Doliene Bedenbaugh, Catherine and Ronald Boozer, Virginia Cannon, A.J. and Faye Shealy, Carle and Carson Livingston, Betty Connelly, David, Sarah and Alana Eagle, Becky and John V. Pugh and Joe Boozer. CONGRATULATION to each of you. The people who missed only one class in these three months were Rose Brandt, Wilfred Dominick, Margaret Koon, Linda Kunkle, Sandra Lominack, Cheryl Lucas, Ella Schafer, Peggy Boozer and Pastor Jason Schafer. Keep up the good work and invite a friend to join you. Missing only two classes were Ruth Boozer, Pastor Brandt, Betty Dominick, Dale and Martha Pugh, Edna Stuck, Janette Vaughn, Braylen Long, Micah Schafer, Julia Eargle, Wanda Connelly, Fred Kesler, Enoch Boozer, and Carla Livingston.

Hope everyone can attend Sunday School more often!

GRACE CHRISTIAN PRESCHOOL is now accepting applications for the 2014-15 school year. Preschool classes are offered for 2-, 3-, and 4-year-olds. Classes begin Sept. 2. Registration packets are available at Grace Lutheran Church, Prosperity. Call the school office at 364-3330 for more information.

T.H.I.N.K. British evangelist Alan Redpath suggested these five helpful questions to ask yourself before you

speak:

T — Is it True?

H — Is it Helpful?

I — Is it Inspiring?

N — Is it Necessary?

K — Is it Kind?

Christian Symbol

Burning Bush In Exodus 3, God speaks to Moses from a bush that is burning but not consumed. When Moses

asks what he should say if the Egyptians questions who sent him to lead the Israelites out of

slavery, God states, "I AM WHO I AM." Centuries later, when people wonder who Jesus is, his

answers hint at his divinity: "I AM the light of the world; I AM the good shepherd; I AM the

bread of life" and, perhaps most profoundly, "Before Abraham was, I AM" (John 8:58). On Pen-

tecost, God's Holy Spirit comes upon the apostles as fire. Thus the burning bush is a powerful

symbol of God's presence echoed through time.
