Foodland poke has a fresh and unique island fl avor. Its nearby location is also a great bonus. A favorite is the poke bowl, where your choice of poke is set atop hot rice, with the option of added furikake – all you need to add are the chop-sticks. If you’re trying to cut out some of the carbs, opt for one of the numerous types of poke the store offers. Depend-ing on the location, poke choices could include California style with avocado, spicy ahi, oyster sauce and shoyu. For a relatively inexpensive price, you can get a delicious, healthy and convenient snack or meal – perfect to take on the go to the beach or while watching a game.

Bridget KitsonStaff Writer

Living in Hawai‘i, musubi is a must. There’s noth-ing like a hot piece of spam and rice to keep you happy. Though I’m sure there are plenty of places to grab a great musubi, 7 Eleven does a wonderful job of always having a hot and ready supply for any-one who needs to satisfy a craving. For a classic op-tion that’s close to campus and inexpensive, 7 Elev-en is the way to go. Since they are open around the clock, there is no time restriction on your spam needs. It may not be the most gourmet musubi, but it is the most convenient and available at all hours of the night.

Bridget KitsonStaff Writer

There is no shortage of seafood and sushi on O‘ahu, but Genki Sushi has a reputation for yummy rolls and great service. This conveyor-style restaurant has a wide range of sushi, bowls and French fries and wings for the less adventurous. Genki Sushi has loca-tions all around the island, and takeout is available for when you want your sushi on the go. Desserts include mochi, ice cream and cupcakes, to name a few op-tions. The prices aren’t too steep, either. Genki Sushi proves you don’t need to go far to find good rolls and authentic Japanese food.

This recently renovated tap house has added the bo-nus of convenience to its list of attractive qualities. The open architecture allows fresh air to circulate while still providing shelter. Featuring many happy hours each week, including Taco Tuesday and Thursday College Nights, Tropics always has something special happening. There is often live music or a DJ playing, and various bar games are scattered throughout the bar. The drink menu highlights unique “beer cocktails,” as well as a wide selection of beers on tap, and the food menu has options for everyone. Try a Michelada, their beer cocktail Bloody Mary, paired with stuffed jalapeños or Mojito wings.

Ask anyone on campus where to purchase alcohol, and you will most likely receive the same answer. Univer-sity Stop, located below campus on University Avenue is within walking distance from the dorms. U-Stop has all your beverage needs for cheap. The owners are celebrated for throwing in a little something extra with a large purchase of alcohol and for knowingly chiding, “Have a good night” as you stroll out the door. U-Stop is a necessary fi rst step to a successful night of drinking.

With your choice of three glistening bars, indoor and outdoor lounge areas and some of the best beats in town, M Nightclub is a college favorite. Always packed, the M is a place where running into familiar faces is unavoidable. Happy Hour is Tuesday through Friday, 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. and includes a $5 drink/appetizer menu. Try a seared ahi taco or kalua pig quesadilla, paired with sparkling lychee sangria. Keep M Nightclub in mind for your next private event, with private rooms, in-house DJ availability and cus-tom menus as options at your disposal. A night at M Night-club is guaranteed to be unforgettable.

Imagine sitting in a softly lit corner booth with that special someone, lingering over a decadent, creamy cheesecake, just one spoon between the two of you. While a delicious entree might be a good way to im-press a date at a restaurant, what really makes it special is dessert. With The Cheesecake Factory’s variety of fa-mous cheesecakes – ranging from their classic original cheesecake to their Godiva chocolate cheesecake – it is not hard to fi nd the perfect dessert to help make the meal special. Whether for Sunday brunch, lunch, dinner or just dessert, The Cheesecake Factory is a great ro-mantic restaurant to begin or end any date in Waikīkī.

Koa Pancake House originated in Kāne‘ohe in 1988 but now has seven other locations across the island of O‘ahu. Koa is best known for selling large portions of food, including delicious pancakes, for a reasonable price. A popular item on the menu is the strawberry whipped cream pan-cakes, and the chocolate chip macadamia nut pancakes are highly recommended. Koa Pancake House has been known for serving many UH students, especially athletes.

David JordanStaff Writer

“Eh, braddah, like get da nutz kine broke da mout ono kine grindz liddat?” is an entic-ing invitation spoken. But what does it mean? It means L&L Hawaiian Barbecue. L&L wins “Best Plate Lunch” due to its specialties in spam musubi, chicken katsu and loco moco – all delicacies of a plate lunch. According to the website, L&L foods are “infused with an ingredient unique to the islands – the warm spirit of Aloha.” If you haven’t stopped in an L&L yet, there are two locations on the Mānoa campus – one in Paradise Palms and the other adjacent to Stan Sheriff Center.

Serg’s wins the “Best Mexican Food” category be-cause of its wide variety of Mexican dishes, including ta-cos, nachos, burritos, flautas and more. Although every day is a fiesta at Serg’s, Taco Tuesdays are the best days to indulge in fine Mexican cuisine. Why? Because the tacos are $1.50, and the fish tacos are $2. For those who enjoy cerveza with meals, Serg’s is BYOB, or you can try one of 16 beers available in the restaurant. Serg’s is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Evangeline CookStaff Writer

Panda Express is a popular place among locals, tourists and students. With a huge menu of entrées such as orange chicken, broccoli beef, and chow mein, it’s no wonder it was voted best Chinese food on the is-land. Once the food reaches the restaurant, no MSG is added, and they offer a Wok Smart menu with entrees that have 250 calories or less per serving. They open about 100 new locations each year worldwide, so stop by to see what you’re missing.

Sammi BaumgartnerSpecial Issues Editor

For all the best in Hawai‘i-grown foods, look no further than the KCC Farmer’s Market. You will be able to indulge in a variety of different foods such as fruits, vegetables, seafood, freshly baked breads and so much more. Many of the ven-dors only supply to restaurants, and their products cannot be found in stores, so the market is a great place to stock up on your Nalo greens, sweet corn, Kaua‘i shrimp, grass-fed beef and fl avored mochi. With a wide range of vendors, there is a choice to satisfy every palate. Make sure to come prepared with a shopping bag, a cooler and an empty stomach – you’re going to need as much storage space as possible.

Walk past the Starbucks in Campus Center, and you will see a line snaking out and around the corner. Despite the usually empty coffee shop next door, students still prefer to wait in line at Starbucks for up to 30 minutes to get their familiar drink. Stop in at any of the Starbucks surrounding campus, like in Mānoa Valley or down Kapahulu, and you will see students spread out through the café studying. With their have-it-your-way menu and endless drink possibilities, Starbucks has established itself in Campus Center, and it looks like it’s here to stay.

Lauren RoxtonStaff Writer

At Bubbies, there is no shortage of things to satisfy any sweet tooth. With about 20 varieties of mochi and a vast menu full of other tasty treats, there is something for everyone. It is a short walk from campus, but be prepared for a brief wait because with treats this delicious, everyone wants a taste. If you don’t want something cold, there are warm drinks as well. They also have sundaes that are served in a variety of objects, including a bathtub or toilet – just to add a special touch to your visit. Bubbies is the perfect place to end your hard work-day with its their delicious treats and inviting atmosphere. Try chocolate-coated peanut butter mochi or one of their creative-ly named ice cream cakes, like the Multiple Orgasm.

Hana Ah YouSpecial Issues Coordinator

Menchie’s has healthy fl avors ranging and rotating de-pending on location and time of year. The topping bar in-cludes gummy bears, caramel sauce, cookie dough, brown-ies, strawberries, mocha and tapioca balls, to name a few. With endless combinations, there’s something for everyone. Whether you prefer rich and sweet, like the red velvet fl a-vor, or tart and refreshing, like the classic tart, Menchie’s has got you covered. Menchie’s is a great way to satisfy a sweet tooth without the guilt that comes with other desserts. Lo-cated at Ward Center, it’s perfect for grabbing a cup of fro-yo and catching a movie across the street.

San Lorenzo Bikinis is a fantastic choice for ladies who want to enjoy the Hawaiian sun while minimizing tan lines. These handmade pieces originate in South America, where designers create looks to fi t every body type. With retail stores close to campus, they are an obvious choice whenever you feel the desire for a new piece. The ability to choose dif-ferent bottoms and tops to your own liking is what makes San Lorenzo unique. A bit pricier than the norm, there are typi-cally trunk shows and sales where the bikini prices are a bit more reasonable. Just a quick stroll off campus, and you can fulfi ll your bikini shopping desires.

If you’re looking for the latest fashions but don’t want to pay a high price, head down to Plato’s Closet. The store carries name brands such as American Eagle, Express and Roxy. If you’re not in the buying mood, do some spring-cleaning, and Plato’s Closet will buy your gently used cloth-ing for cash. Plus, for every $20 you sell or buy, a stamp will be placed on a Plato’s Closet stamp card; once the card is fi lled, you will be awarded 20 percent off your next purchase. Don’t waste hundreds of dollars at the mall when you can fi nd the same high-end fashion at Plato’s Closet. Your wallet and wardrobe will thank you.

When it comes to thrift shopping on O‘ahu, it’s safe tosay that Goodwill takes the cake. There are seven locationsthroughout O‘ahu, each carrying its weight in ’80s wed-ding dresses, old-school records and Destiny’s Child CDs.Macklemore would be proud. Aside from shopping, youcan donate your used clothing and help the less fortunate,or you can contribute your HI-5 containers for cash. Re-demption is available at the Ka pahulu, Mapunapuna, Bere-tania and Wahiawa stores. For students that do not want afar commute, the Beretania and Waialae stores are minutesaway from campus.

McCully Bicycle & Sporting Goods started in Waipahu in 1935 before the shop moved to Honolulu. It was fi rst located on Kapi‘olani Street, then Young Street and fi nal-ly its current location on King Street. It has always been called McCully Bike Shop, no matter the location. The shop on King has been around for more than 20 years. Current promotions include sales on bikes and shoes. Pipeline Smoke Shop is a family owned business. Ka-cie Alsdorf-Gellineau’s father has owned Pipeline Smoke Shop for 10 years. It was one of the fi rst smoke shops in Hawai‘i with the family wanting to bring its cheap prices to the island. The shop fi rst started with sunglasses then turned into a smoke shop. The low prices are perfect for university students, and the shop is conveniently placed on University Avenue. A current promotion is buy one regular priced pipe and get the second one half off. Also, if you buy two regular priced pipes, the third one is free.

For the best food on campus, UH students picked Ba-Le. Located in Hemenway Hall, the menu includes beef, chicken or vegetable pho, freshly made sandwiches, a variety of salads, tapioca, pastries and iced thai tea and coffee. There is also a bar, called Mānoa Gardens, inside Ba-Le that opens at noon. Mānoa Gardens is best known for having cheap beer – perfect for a quick midday drink. There is a range of seating options, indoor and outdoor, and Student Media Night occurs once a month.

Located in the Sustainability Courtyard between Kuykendall and Sakamaki halls, Da Spot proves that getting a quick bite to eat from a truck does not, asa rule, have to involve questionable meat glistening with grease. The lunch menu shuffl es daily, rangingbetween different kinds of curries and other vegetar-ian dishes coupled with brown or saffron rice, but they also serve up other options from their standard menu. The acai bowls, muffi ns and bagels make fora solid breakfast or snack, and the baklava makes a delicately fl aky, crunchy dessert. In addition, their blenders are whirring all day long, making cool, re-freshing smoothies. Next time you need a quick bite in between classes, give Da Spot a try.

The students of the University of Hawai‘i have spoken, and Pizza Hut has been declared the best place to get pizza. With 24 loca-tions on O‘ahu, there is a store within reach of your location – off campus or on. The vari-ety of options available to hungry customers is undoubtedly the best part of the pizzeria. Customers are able to pick multiple toppings, choose the type of crust and size, order a salad and make a combo with breadsticks or buffalo wings. For dessert, Pizza Hut offers baked cin-namon sticks with icing for dip.
