    THE HUSKY EXPERIENCE

  • 2014 Huskies Football 7

Robert B. Redman Stadium is situated on the upper campus of Bloomsburg University as part of the university's 103-acre athletic complex. Originally built in February 1974, the new facility took the place of Athletic Park in downtown Bloomsburg as Home of the Huskies and today stands as one of the finest facilities in the region.

Bloomsburg University dedicated the field at Redman Stadium in honor of former head coach Danny Hale on April 28, 2012. Hale be-gan coaching at Bloomsburg in 1993 and holds the school record for most coaching victories, retiring after the 2012 season.

In the spring of 2008 the facility was completely renovated as a part of a $3.45 million dollar project which included a press box with ele-vator, new restrooms, artificial turf field, track and field facilities, new railings and ADA compliance, new parking lot, new visitor bleachers and lights. The stadium, which overlooks the scenic Susquehanna Valley, has seating for 5,000 spectators, although attendance at several events has exceeded that total. The largest crowd to see a football game in the facility totalled 7,483 at the 1985 Homecoming contest against Millersville.

Originally, when planning began for the new stadium in 1963, the pro-posed site was and area on the lower campus across from where the Rec Center is now; however, a consultant's report recommended the

upper campus development. The project finally got underway in 1972 at a total cost of $725,000. On Saturday, September 21, 1974, the first game was played in the stadium, and dedication ceremonies were held naming the facility in honor of Redman. In the first game at the newly renovated facility in 2008 the Huskies beat California (PA), 24-17.

Coach Redman, a native of Sayre, Pa., and a graduate of its public schools, graduated with honors in economics at Swarthmore College where he also participated in four years of varsity football activi-ties, served as captain during his senior year and was also a varsity performer with the baseball team. He earned his Master of Arts degree in economics at Pennsylvania State University during his tenure at Bloomsburg State College. Redman had coached at Sayre High School and North High School in Binghamton, N.Y, prior to serving as an officer in the United States Navy during World War II. He left the service with the rank of lieutenant commander. He returned to his coaching duties at North High School and remained there until his appointment at Bloomsburg in 1947.

In addition to serving as head coach of two varsity teams at Blooms-burg, Redman also served as dean of men and taught courses in eco-nomics. During his five years at Bloomsburg, his teams won 38 games and lost only four. His record included three Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championships and two undefeated teams.

    ASSISTANT COACHES

    Frank WilliamsDefensive Line

Frank Williams returned to Bloomsburg in 2013 after 31 seasons previously as a member of the Bloomsburg coaching staff, serving under five head coaches. Joining the Huskies in 1976, he spent the 1981 season at Bucknell, before returning to Bloomsburg upon George Landis' arrival in 1982. Williams attended Kutztown where he was an All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference selection and is a member

of that university's Athletic Hall of Fame.

    Gary GilchrestStrength & Conditioning

Gary Gilchrest begins his second season as an assistant with the Huskies in 2014. Gilchrest assists with strength and conditioning and works on defense with the linebackers. He also handles game day operations.

Gilchrest is a 1995 graduate of Bloomsburg University, earning his bachelors degree in Criminal Justice. He returned in 1996 to enter the IIT program. Gilchrest finished with his

Masters of Science in Instructional Technologies in 1998. Playing both inside and outside linebacker for the Huskies, Gilchrest was a three-year starter under Pete Adrien. He was coached by the late John S. Devlin while playing for Danny Hale his senior season at Bloomsburg.

By Scott Eddy, Assistant Sports Information Director

A year removed from a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship, Bloomsburg returns to the gridiron this fall needing to fill the vacated shoes occupied last season by members of one of the strongest senior classes in program history.

Though much has changed, in reality little is different around the Huskies as the 2014 season begins.

I dont think we need to have any different expectations than we do every year, said head coach Paul Darragh, the 2013 PSAC East Coach of the Year after leading the Huskies to a 10-2 record in his first season at the helm. Our goals are to win the PSAC East, to win the conference and to go as far as we can in the national playoffs.

With three All-Americans from a year ago gone to the professional ranks, along with four other graduated all-conference selections and the National Player of the Year, the task of finding replacements may seem daunting. Darragh is quick to point out, however, that the Huskies ability to find the right fits for their system year in and year out has allowed Bloomsburg to record 15 consecutive winning seasons.

Last years group is going to be tough to replace, he said. But Ive told our guys that the key is to be able to play as a team and buy into the fact that some of the best teams weve ever had here did not have one pro prospect.

Though the focus may be on the graduated players who are not back from last years championship team Harlon Hill winner and the PSACs all-time leading rusher Franklyn Quiteh, all-time school sacks leader and NFL Draft selection Larry Webster along with three all-conference offensive linemen in Brian Clarke, Matt Feiler and Chris Steck, the Huskies return five starters on offense as well as eight on defense.

Having numerous returners will come in handy as the Huskies face tests right off the bat as part of a challenging schedule.

After opening at non-conference Stonehill on Sept. 6, which finished 8-3 last year and reached the Northeast-10 Championship Game, Bloomsburg begins its home schedule against perennial PSAC West power California (PA) before making the trip to Erie for a Week 3 date at Mercyhurst. Those crossover dates will count toward divisional standings this season as the PSAC will count all mandated conference games. The opening season gauntlet continues as PSAC East play opens when Bloomsburg welcomes rival Shippensburg to Danny Hale Field at Redman Stadium on Sept. 27.

    OFFENSE

QuarterbackRedshirt junior Tim Kelly has taken a stranglehold on the position after winning a tight pre-season battle in 2012. Since, Kelly has helped guide the Huskies to a 20-4 record during his tenure under center and he has already begun to climb the program record books. He ranks fifth in career touchdown passes (39) and eighth in passing yards (3,890). Kelly, who completed over 58 percent of his pass attempts last year, also brings the ability to scramble he rushed for 280 yards and six touchdowns in 2013.

Any time you return a veteran like Tim Kelly under center that is invaluable, Darragh emphasized.

Behind Kelly will be senior Brady Knerr along with newcomers Chris Palubinsky, a redshirt last year, and Ryan Henning, a transfer from Bucknell.

  • 2014 Huskies Football 17

Running BackParamount to the Huskies success over the past decade and a half has been their ability to pound the football at will. Never has that been more evident than the past two years - the Huskies posted the top two rushing seasons in PSAC history back-to-back 2012 (3,789 yards) and 2013 (3,762 yards). Much of that work was done on the legs of Franklyn Quiteh, who finished his brilliant career second all-time in NCAA Division II history with 7,523 yards rushing.

Bloomsburg ultimately finished with the most points scored in school history (474), second-most team touchdowns in school history (63) and the most-ever yards of total offense (5,895) last year due in large part to the success on the ground. Bloomsburg also compiled 11 30-point games and recorded 500 or more yards of total offense eight times in 2013, both school records.

Quiteh followed in the footsteps of previous stars such as Jamar Brittingham and Irv Sigler before him and the Huskies will seek to continue the tradition of success with their power run game.

We have depth in the backfield. You cant afford not to have that, Darragh said. We feel we have at least four or five guys who are capable. We may not have someone who puts up the sheer numbers of Franklyn, but as a group we feel they give us the skill set at tailback we need to be successful.

Redshirt junior DaiShon Munger served as Quitehs primary compliment for much of the season last year, rushing for 644 yards and two scores on 120 carries. Also returning is redshirt

sophomore Joe Parsnik who impressed in his debut last fall, averaging 6.1 yards per carry while finishing with 513 yards and three touchdowns as he earned an expanded role late in the season.

Adding additional depth to the position is sophomore Lawrence Elliott Jr. who shifts to the backfield after landing on the All-PSAC East second team as a kick returner while also seeing limited time at wide receiver last season as a true freshman. Redshirt freshman Altarique Mosley-Dew saw extensive time in this years spring game while Rasheen Tookes will also battle for carries.

At fullback, the Huskies lost graduated senior Matt Wenrich but are confident in senior Brody Myers and junior Derek Burkhard who return from last year. Redshirt freshmen Eric McCracken and Wade Mastrog have also impressed the coaching staff.

Wide ReceiverA young group of wide outs will vie for time this season. Redshirt junior Connor Gades leads the group after starting all 12 games with 23 receptions and three touchdowns last year. Behind him there are opportunities for playing time. Redshirt junior Trent Daniels saw time in 11 games last year while redshirt sophomore Chad Hoffman makes the transition to wide receiver from quarterback a move that has served the Huskies well in the past as Gades and last years leading receiver Glenn Hutton Jr. also were recruited as quarterbacks.

Redshirt freshmen Davone Cornish and Dylan Hine along with Coy Quivers and 64 transfer D.J. McFadden also feature into the depth chart.

Im sure we can be as productive in the passing game because the guy under center is back thats what really helps, Darragh said.

Tight EndDepth, experience and options would be words to describe the Huskies situation at tight end. Redshirt junior Shane Quinn started six games last year while Aaron Allison added an element to the passing game in his debut season last fall. Younger players Nate Hoenl and Simon Patrick Williams add to an already deep position.

Were really excited about where we are at tight end; we didnt even recruit that position this year because of the depth we have and how young the guys are, Darragh said. The tight end position is critical to our run game and gives us the added stability and experience that will help compensate for losing the three guys we did on the offensive line.

    2014 SEASON PREVIEW

Offensive LineThe impeccable trio of Clarke, Feiler and Steck were a model of consistency and excellence for the Huskies in recent years, accounting for a combined 133 starts. With those three spots vacated, Bloomsburg returns two lineman starters from the nations sixth-ranked rushing offense in juniors Ryan Geiger and Dakota Hoagland.

Geiger figures to move to center from left guard, though redshirt sophomore Jesse Osborne could win the center job and allow Geiger to remain at guard. Hoagland continues to hold down the right tackle spot with Jon Garland, Shawn Secola and Nick Pellechia fighting for time at tackle as well. Christian Whiteside saw extended playing time last year and will be in the mix at guard along with Nicholas Reed and Greg Rommel.

We felt like through the spring we identified the linemen who will come back and compete for positions, Darragh said. We have some depth.

    DEFENSE

Defensively we feel like we have a chance to be better, Darragh says. Even though it will be tough to replace the production Larry Webster had and Jonathan Patrick along with Chris Kennedy who were productive as well, we think we have the guys to step in and fill those roles.

Defensive LineThe Huskies have a large void left by the graduation of sack leader Webster who led the nation in sack yardage last year while racking up 12.5 sacks before being drafted by the Detroit Lions in the fourth round of Mays NFL Draft. Also gone is all-conference defensive tackle Kennedy.

The cupboard is far from bare, however. Shawn Mitchell reprises his starting role alongside Jeremiah Lowery and Ezra Ranco in the middle while Bill LaBadie and Roy Dennis fight for expanded roles at tackle. At the ends, the Huskies will miss Webster but certainly do not lack for capable players ready to step up.

We are loaded with experience at defensive end, Darragh said. We have guys with the experience and some young guys coming up. We may not have a dynamic sack guy like Larry, but I think collectively we will have solid play.

Senior David McFadden started all 12 games opposite Webster last year and is joined by two potential key returning teammates Tony David and Matt Heilig who each missed all of last season due to injury. David, who suffered a knee injury during the first series of last years season opener, had 41 tackles and four sacks in 2012. Heilig returned for the spring after playing 22 games his first two years in maroon and gold.

Senior Dylan Stair and redshirt sophomore Joe Wetty played in every game last year and are also joined by newcomers Marquez Norford and Scott Beltz.

LinebackerIn a defense with returners at every position, no spot is in better shape than linebacker where the Huskies did not lose anyone from last years conference champions.

Senior Justin Shirk made a nearly flawless transition to middle linebacker last year, compiling the third-most tackles in Bloomsburg history (123) and owns 272 tackles along with 23.5 tackles for loss during his Huskies tenure.

Senior Dylan Spangler started 11 games with 58 tackles a year ago at the buck linebacker position while Garrett Pope started eight games at the will spot. Andrew Harris returns after finishing second on the team with 72 stops last fall.

Were excited about the linebacker corps," Darragh said. "That group with Justin being such a great leader should give us the same type of, if not more, production than last year.

Bernadain Decena and Tyrik Clary, a transfer from Shippensburg, also add depth on the outside while Bryan McCall and Tyler Szflarski will work to see time in the middle.

Defensive BacksThe secondary is an area the Huskies will need to improve on from last year, allowing opponents 299.2 yards per game through

    Donovan Morris

  • 2014 Huskies Football 19

We have a good chance to be better in the secondary. We have added depth at corner and safety and have options we didnt have a year ago, Darragh said.

Gary Postell, an All-PSAC East selection last year, returns at cornerback along with fellow starter D.J. Robinson who had four interceptions last season. Behind them, Damin Finley, Travon Pugh and Mark Collins Jr. will work into the rotation while Miles Williams could play an important role after missing last season due to injury.

Senior Tomas Cabrera missed the spring due to injury, but returns at safety along with Tyler Knoblauch who had 43 tack-les and two interceptions a year ago. Donovan Morris brings the ability to play nickel as well as corner while Jerrin Toomey impressed during the spring game. Newcomer Eric Schwartz will also add depth.

Special TeamsOf all the members of last years senior class, kicker Dan Fisher may be the most overlooked. The PSACs all-time leader in field goals, PATs and kicking points, Fisher was nearly automatic when he stepped on the field.

Redshirt junior Braden Drexler steps into that role this fall after handling kickoff duties in 2013.

"The consistency Dan gave us was unbelievable. Braden had a

great spring and hopefully we can come close to being as consis-tent as Dan was, Darragh said.

Will Wagner averaged 39.0 yards per punt with 16 punts placed inside the 20 as a true freshman last year. Elliott was a star on the kick return team also as a true freshman and brings big play abil-ity again this fall.

OVERALLThough some of the names and faces may have changed, the Huskies expect to again be in the race at the top of a competitive PSAC East.

We may not have the flashy names and pre-season All-Ameri-cans like last year, but we definitely have the ability to be the same type of football team or better, Darragh said. We have the talent to compete its just a matter of having the right guys on the field and playing as a team to give us a chance to win.

With many of the position battles decided during the spring, the return of summer brings the Huskies an opportunity to finalize the final question marks before traveling to Stonehill on Week 1 and then embarking on the PSAC schedule.

The pieces of the puzzle are there, Darragh said. We just have to mold them so that theyre ready by Sept. 6.
