AYURVEDIC APPROACH TO PHARMACOGENOMICS

3:00 pm – 3:25 pm

There have been number of efforts in the field of Auyrveda to merge and bridge evidence based western medicine via studies using biochemical and genomics technologies. Identifying genetic variations in Ayurveda-based classification may provide a newer approach to pharmacogenomics (which is the science of how genetic makeup affects an individual’s response to drugs) and help better understand the scientific classification basis of human population for better therapeutic benefits and safety profile. Ayurvedic system of medicine, the selection of a preventive and curative regime as well as predisposition to a disease is primarily based on the assessment of one’s body constitution termed “Prakriti”. Prakriti of an individual is based on the dominance of any single or a combination of mainly three predominant extreme Doshas, Vata (V), Pitta (P) and Kapha (K), which are not only genetically determined (Shukra Shonita), but also influenced by season (Rutu), maternal diet and lifestyle (Matur Ahara Vihara), and age of parents and female reproductive system (Kala-Garbhashaya). Ayurveda classification of the three extreme body constitution types propounds that the diseases manifest from imbalance of these main doshas. The three main types of constitutional body types are determined by proportions of the five basic elements (namely Space, Air, Fire, Water and Earth) which constitute the Tridoshas. . Besides, biomedical research ascribes distinct properties and functions to each Dosha. Since the aim of pharmacogenomics is to develop strategies for individualizing therapy for patients, in order to optimize outcome through knowledge of the variability of the human genome and its influence on drug response, examples of ayurvedic classification approach is one way to enrich and or subgroup patients will be presented.

Physical, Psychological and Metaphysical understanding of PRANA for enhancing Yoga Practice, Health And Wellbeing

4:30 pm – 4:55 pm

Perfect body and mind are essential for attaining Purushartha’s (goals of Life). Ayurveda considers righteous living, enjoying life, achieving goals and experiencing bliss as the goals of life. Perfect health is vital for moving toward these goals. Both Yoga and Ayurveda recognize the role of Shareera (body) serving as a vehicle for consciousness in the physical realm. On the other hand Manas (Mind) is structured with good and bad Samskaras (patterns) which condition our choices and experiences. Delight or misery in life is based on wholesome or unwholesomeness of these patterns. Prana is the gateway for promoting Mind and body to good patterns. A healthy flow of Prana enhances positive experiences and helps achieve goals of life. The main objective of this presentation is to discus the subtle mechanics involved in generation and regulation of Prana, its inter-play between body, emotions, sensory expression and mind along with Diet and herbs.

Formless to Form and Form to Formless- Yoga sub-atomical transformation

5:00 pm – 5:25 pm

If humans have evolved from nothing then there is a good story to narrate. Ancient Indian literature, common sense and individual experiences in life clearly reveal that human beings evolved from nothing, the absolute empty space. If this statement is true then who is god? What is religion? Here an evidence based explanation will be given to show how space as god transforms into matter from an ancient science perspective and Yoga the only religion that will take you back to space. A modern framework will be used to explore the subatomic self.

Mantras – A Significant Chikitsa in Ayurveda 10:00 am – 10:25 am

Mantras are Sanskrit words loaded with power and sounds capable of penetrating our body into deep levels of consciousness by their unique sounds and the vibrations they create. Mantra, one of the process of chikitsa also included in ayurveda. In Ayurveda, apart from herbal remedies for diseases, a stress is laid on Mantra recitation also to enhance the healing. It is adravyabhuta and daivavyapasraya chikitsa paddhati. From the vedic period man has been constantly associated with Mantras – right from the moment man is born till he breathes his last. His first connection begins with Jaatakarma. We can find numerous references emphasizing Mantra recitation in Ayurvedic texts. In the treatment of Jwara (fever), Charaka recommends chanting Vishnu Sahasranama. In the treatment of snake bites, antidotes are prepared while chanting specific mantras to increase the efficacy of the medicine. Recent research in the efficacy of mantras and sound therapy on our body and healing has revealed what our yogic seers have already experienced, advocated and which has been passed on from time immemorial to the present day – the Power of Mantra Yoga or the chanting of Mantras.

Yogi Amrit Ji

Yogi Amrit Desai is recognized as one of the pioneers of the authentic teachings of yoga in the West. He was born in Halol in Gujarat, India in 1932, and in 1947 he met his teacher, Babuji, who had come to Halol to teach. He immediately became a disciple of the master, and has followed his teachings ever since. After studying engineering and then teaching high school in India, the young Amrit Desai arrived in America in February 1960, initially to study art. But his spiritual mission drove him to begin teaching yoga, and that rapidly became his true life’s work. He was one of the earliest of the wave of Indian “gurus” who came to the U.S., and is the last living master from that initial wave. Gurudev has been honored for following in the footsteps of many of the great spiritual Masters such as Paramahansa Yogananda, the renowned author of Autobiography of a Yogi, and Swami Vivekenanda, who founded the World Religious Parliament in India 1893. This prestigious organization has bestowed recognition to only five spiritual teachers who have played significant roles in disseminating the ancient heritage of India worldwide. In 1986 they honored Gurudev with the title Jagadacharya, World Teacher. He has also been recognized with titles including Doctor of Yoga and the Vishwa Yoga Ratna, awarded by the President of India.

Role of Ayurveda and Yoga in Promoting Digestive Health 12:00 pm – 12:25 pm

Healthy digestion is indispensable for a healthy body and mind. According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, 60 to 70 million Americans are affected by various digestive diseases. Ayurveda has given utmost importance to KOSHTA (digestive system) health. Physiology that maintains our health is depends on the state of AGNI (metabolic activity). The three doshas which help our well-being when balanced are regulated by AGNI. Prevention of diseases and recovery from imbalances also depends on the functioning of digestive fire. Hence every dietary protocol and physical activity should be based on the functioning of AGNI. Ayurveda, the ancient science of healing, explains various modalities for balancing energies in the digestive system; including diet, herbs and Panchakarma. Similarly, in yogic literature there are explanations of various asana, mudra, bandha and pranayama, which are beneficial for healthy digestion. In this presentation, simple, practical and effective protocols for the healthy digestive system mentioned in the literature of ayurveda and yoga have been compiled. The main objective of this study is to discuss various modalities provided in the yoga and ayurvedic literature for promoting digestive health.

Prana, Kundalini and D.C. Bio Potentials: Cross-Cultural & Interdisciplinary Challenges

2:00 pm – 2:25 pm

Research integrating tenets of Eastern psycho-spiritual traditions and Western science are essential in facing the challenges of promoting health, well-being and human psycho-spiritual development. Such integration provided the basis for a study of healing meditation states that produced data of real-time dynamic fluctuations in DC potential measurements taken simultaneously from skin locations on and off of acupuncture meridian points. It was hypothesized that bio electricity, as DC potential current measurements taken on acupuncture points (marmas), is both a direct and an indirect measure of chi (prana). During a baseline session, a subject had an experience that met traditional descriptions of a Kundalini experience. Moreover, the DC potential data taken during this event appear to corroborate descriptions in Yogic sciences of energy-based phenomena which can take place during an experience of Kundalini activity. Therefore, these results appear to represent an electro-physiological signature of Kundalini activity.

Ayurvedic Eugenics – Seeding for Optimal Health

4:00 pm – 4:25 pm

Health is the basic necessity of every human being. Ayurveda provides a magnificent and holistic definition of health, which explains that health has to be at all levels of human existence. Optimal health is a treasure that each individual should value and strive for accomplishing and maintaining throughout the lifetime. Ayurveda provides many ways for achieving optimal health. In real life, it has always been observed that few people can easily achieve health while for some it is very challenging to maintain optimal health. This is due to genetic variations. It is a well accepted fact that health has a strong relation with one’s genetic makeup. Hence, it is essential to sow the seed of health when genetic makeup is developing. So, how do we achieve this strong healthy genetic makeup? The goal of achieving this strong healthy genetic makeup is addressed by Ayurveda Eugenics. In “Charaka Samhita” – a classical Ayurvedic text book dated approximately 3500 years old gives thorough guidance from preconception to childbirth with the focus of having radiant healthy progeny. This presentation will focus on how to follow these Ayurveda guidelines in the present modern times and place. And also provide practical solutions for adopting these invaluable ancient methods seamlessly.

Hrid Guha Dhyan ~Meditate in the cave of your heart with Indu

I celebrate and honor that there are many paths that bring us back home to ourselves; many practices and techniques which support us to wake up to all that we are and the beautiful life coming through us. Cave of the Heart meditation is one of such paths, it is about connection — connecting deeply with our spiritual heart center, where our true essence resides. The minimum gift of this practice is the ability to know ourselves, to see whatever we are doing or thinking to separate from ourselves, and to understand how to make the shift to correct misalignments and reconnect with our essential natures. The practice is comprised of eight individual building blocks. The first five are the five elements – earth, water, fire, air, and space — which we encounter in the world and inside ourselves. The sixth building block is connecting with our individual selves — essence self, small self, ego, personas, feelings, regrets, whatever is present in the moment of practice can be welcomed into the light of the practice. The seventh and eighth building blocks are the Moon and Sun and related lunar and solar qualities. As we meditate on the Moon and Sun, we honor what sustains life on the physical plane and honor our inner polarities of masculine (solar) and feminine (lunar) dynamics.

Ayurvedic Psychology – Pragyparadha, the language of emotions

8:30 am – 8:55 am

Our educational approach bridges Yoga and Ayurveda to assist in restoring the innate capacity of individuals to be mindful and discerning, effectively integrating what is perceived, experienced and learned. Without adding or removing content from our mental and emotional activity, conscious awareness remains receptive, as it makes sense of what we feel, think and sense. Most of us have not yet learned how to sustain this level of clarity. We are familiar with concentrating our attention to observe what we believe may be a physical or psychological obstacle in another, in our selves or in our environment. By being unnecessarily absorbed and distracted by our own reactivity, we experience a lack of coherence between our brain and heart, or between what we think and feel. As long as we believe in imaginary obstacles, the fight or flight response remains on alert, causing the arousal of tensions and blocks, vitiating the doshas. Instead, reactive patterns can be recognized and “read” experientially. Through assessment and feedback Ayurvedic Psychology assists in noticing these tensions and blocks, retraining the brain and body to sustain receptive awareness to be as informed as possible. Sustaining awareness optimizes homeostatic activity and heart-brain coherence, continually eliciting healing responses.

The complimentary sciences Ayurveda and Yoga together help us to balance our inner energies and create optimum wellness of our body, mind and spirit. They consider each of us as a unique individual with a unique mind-body type (Prakruti) which is determined during conception. They assist us in creating a comprehensive wellness plan personalized for our unique physiology and our specific health condition or disease (Vikruti). They help us in improving health, preventing illness, healing disease and promoting longevity. Ayurveda & Yoga help us in improving both quality and quantity of life by adding life to years and years to life. To achieve this, Ayurveda uses natural and personalized nutrition, culinary and medicinal herbs, daily and seasonal health routines, cleansing and rejuvenating therapies, aroma and music therapy etc. Yoga improves quality and quantity of life by using the eight steps of Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahar, Dharana, Dhyan and Samadhi. The most important Ayurvedic approaches for improving both quality and quantity of life are Dinacharya which is daily health routine and Ritucharya which is seasonal health routine. Dinacharya includes detailed guidelines and prescription regarding the time to go to bed, time to wake up, morning ablutions, oral hygiene, care of eyes-earns-nose-throat, care of skin-hair-nails, exercise & stretches, breathing, focusing and relaxation techniques, time and ingredients of meals etc. Ritucharya helps to maintain year-round health by adapting to the seasonal changes. When a season changes, our metabolism changes and the needs of our body and mind change. Ritucharya helps us to balance the seasonal changes by adjusting our diet and lifestyle. If we do not adjust our diet and lifestyle, we may develop symptoms and seasonal diseases. Ritucharya helps us with natural cleansing Pancha Karma to prevent such seasonal diseases. Yoga teaches us to discipline our personal and social behavior, our posture, our breath, our senses, our focus and our purpose of life. Both Ayurveda & Yoga work for health and life just like the user’s manuals and maintenance schedules work for all the machines. Ayurveda & Yoga enable us to stay healthy & happy and to avoid imbalance or disease or sorrow. Ayurveda & Yoga are the key to longevity. This presentation will focus on how to follow Ayurveda & Yoga in current time and place. Attention will be paid to make Ayurveda & Yoga easy to follow and practice.

The Art of Karma Yoga – Desire Management

11:00 am – 11:25 am

Karma Yoga is a type of yoga where ones pragmatic actions are purified and synchronized with nature to lead a healthy yogic life. During the process of carrying out a good karmic deed, the mind sometimes detours and gets lost in its way before attaining the final destiny. A more careful analysis of the mind shows that as human beings we cannot live without desire, and at the same time ,the very desire can be self-destructive if not managed properly. This talk presents a case study on how desires can be recognized, and show methods to conclude them without harming self or others, if a simple process called as “Introspection” is carried out on the desire before it takes full form in the mind and subsequently to action.

2:00 pm – 2:25 pm

On 9/11/2010, a 55 year old Caucasian woman, presented at the clinic, with a decade old history of daily migraines. Early onset of migraines at age 11, were initially cyclical and related to menstrual cycle. Headaches increased in frequency and severity after marriage and bearing children. Patient also started experiencing anxiety and depression in 1975. She was put on multiple agents for her complaints. Multiple imaging studies and neurological consultations at academic centers in Boston yielded no anatomical abnormality. An integrative protocol combining initial Ayurvedic treatment followed by acupuncture, massage and mild yoga was developed for the patient, along with an advice for a largely unprocessed diet. Patient had complete amelioration of all her symptoms except insomnia over a period of 6 months. Her psychiatrist was able to wean her off of all her meds except Prozac, over this period. A sleep study showed that the patient had very little REM sleep. In consultation with psychiatry, Prozac was weaned off, resulting in relief from insomnia. Patient is completely drug free and migraine free today and continues to do well with a maintenance protocol of acupuncture and massage.

Healing as a Writing Coach: Using Vedic Practices to Dissolve a Client’s Stress

For one international writer working on her dissertation in America, several sources of stress became major stumbling blocks to her completion of her culminating project for her doctorate degree. As her writing coach, I became the sounding board for many of the issues she faced, and I used my experience with meditation, the breath, and Ayurvedic practices in order to support her over the hurdles she faced. This presentation recounts a narrative of my work with this Arabic-speaking mother of 6 young children, who (in the Spring semester of 2014) successfully completed the requirements for her PhD in the discipline of English. From using aloe plants for skin problems to sending recordings of Vedic chants via internet, from deep breathing during private sessions to relationship counseling via creative meditations on staying in the present moment, the healing aspect of being a writing coach played a crucial role in my relationship with this client. My discovery of this valuable aspect of my individualized coaching practice forms the basis for this discussion.

Green Therapies (GT) and Good Living Practices (GLP)

Friday, July 4, 2014 @ 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Yoga and Ayurveda are two very similar paths sharing a close relationship, so closely related that they are often described as two sides of the same coin. Both these sciences which have their origin in the Vedic texts address health and health practices. If Ayurveda is the healing aspect, Yoga is the spiritual/practical side of the Vedic teachings. Together they emphasize a complete approach to the well being of the body, the mind, and the spirit. Both sciences have a common underlying principle: the well being of an individual at the level of body and mind and to help an individual re-connect to their true nature through pratyeksha (direct and personal experience). While Yoga prepares the body and mind of the individual for the eventual liberation and enlightenment, Ayurveda describes the various ways to keep the body and mind healthy. Both sciences emphasize our close relationship with the environment and being in tune with it to achieve harmony. Diseases arise when we are out of sync with our environment. Both Yoga and Ayurveda describe the disease process as taking its roots first in the mind. If we fail to recognize the disease process in the mind and continue to make wrong choices, the disease overflows into the physical body as specific symptoms. Thus it is important to identify methods that can be used to forestall the onset of diseases, increase healthy aging and create conditions to obtain a “longevity dividend” in physical, mental and spiritual terms. My presentation will focus on Ayurvedic and Yogic interpretation of diseases, preventive care, and interventions which I term as “green therapies” including good living practices and lifestyle changes all of which will assist individuals in their pursuit of peace and calmness and to bring greater wholeness and integration in their lives.

Ayurveda As Yoga TherapyFriday, July 4, 2014 @ 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Yoga and Ayurveda are sister sciences. Disease is an imbalance at the level of mind manifesting in the physical body. We are the end result of all of our experiences through our senses and emotions. If we want to change our body and mind, we have to bring different experiences through our senses. Ayurveda teaches us how to modulate input through our senses to create balance at the mind body level. Yoga teaches us to transcend our ideas, concepts, memories, thoughts, desires and history to create a balance at the mind body level. In short Yoga is detoxification of the mind while Ayurveda is detoxification of the body. Yoga works from inside out while Ayurveda works from outside in. They are highly complementary to each other. We will discuss as to how Ayurveda can help create a balance in the mind-body complex by changing the life style, nutrition and detoxification.

TAPASYA~ The Trinity of Agni, Prana, Ayurveda, Soma and YogA Saturday, July 5, 2014 @ 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Tapas is one of the Yogic limbs of Ashtanga Yoga to understand the divine matrix. Let us explore the Trinity of Agni, Soma and Prana and how the Tapas on these three is the ultimate need of the hour to restore the balance of the microcosm and macrocosm. In the yogic tradition it is the fire that burns within that is needed for the sanyasi to achieve the very difficult goal of enlightenment, to foster self control, one mindedness and focus, simplicity, wisdom, integrity. Tapas is one of the most powerful concepts in the Yoga Sutra. The word “tapas” comes from the Sanskrit verb “tap” which means “to burn.” The traditional interpretation of tapas is “fiery discipline,” the fiercely focused, constant, intense commitment necessary to burn off the impediments that keep us from being in the true state of yoga (union with the universe). Soma stands for beauty, immortality, healthy, grace, delicacy and lunar energy. Soma, according to Ayurveda, is one of the three aspects of prana, which is the life force or the electromagnetic vibration that keeps the body alive. The other two aspects of prana are Agni & Marut. Dr Indu Arora shall share the wisdom of the eternal pair “Agni- Soma” in connection with Yoga Practice and how we can tap into our healing potential by balancing Saumyata and Agni within and around us through simpleYogic Kriyas. A subject I feel is of extreme importance in present era, the need of the hour….Contents of the workshop:1.What is Soma and Agni in Yogic and Ayurvedic Perspective2.Seat of Soma and Agni3.Connection between Soma, Agni and Prana4.Yoga practice for balancing Agni, Soma and PranaLet us understand the TAPAS to self, the TAPAS to health, the TAPAS to Trinity, the TAPAS to Yoga and Ayurveda.

Astro-Yoga: Ayurvedic Astrology, Human Psychology and Yoga Asana Therapy

Sunday, July 4, 2014 @ 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

Hatha yoga means Sun (ha) and Moon (tha) in Sanskrit. In ancient times there was a deeper connection between Ayurvedic diagnosis, natal chart readings and prescriptions of asanas for planetary afflictions. Much of this has been lost due to the complexity of mastering both Jyotish and Ayurveda. Yet many of the more accomplished Ayurvedic physicians and jyotishis like Dr. Vasant Lad and Dr. David Frawley have seen the importance of the need for the two working together. In this two hour workshop, Barry Rosen will introduce some of the major poses and their connections to the planets, their corresponding organs, chakras and psychological components and show how yoga therapy can support all of these levels. Sometimes malefic planets need to be neutralized and sometimes weak planets need to be strengthened and sometimes a balancing set is needed. The challenge in therapy is the poses that are often required are too difficult to perform by clients because of the planetary afflictions and corresponding weak organs and then alternative poses and partial poses are needed. Three major sets will be introduced which energize, balance and relax the physiology based on the Ayurvedic constitution. In addition, the workshop will address the general strengthening poses that support all the important functioning in the body. For example, Mars governs the adrenals and many people suffer from a fatigue and the asana pose, the crane, supports the adrenals and gives immediate courage and energy and power to those in need. Or, people with a weak Venus in their chart and having problems with sexual procreation, creativity and 2nd chakra issues may need to do the lion pose. This workshop is introductory and can only begin to scratch the surface of this very complex topic. It has been developed with worksheets and tables to support those who have little or no background in Ayurvedic astrology and jyotish.
