Ashtabula County’s 18covered bridges round out a

trifecta of opportunity fortourism in the county.

The three major drivers oftourism in the countyinclude Lake Erie, the area’swineries and the covered

bridges, said Mark Winchell, director of the AshtabulaCounty Convention and Vis-itors Bureau.

“The cool thing about thebridges is it’s a year-roundopportunity,” he said. “Somuch of the tourism in thecounty is seasonal.”

Winchell said the bridgesoffer something differentduring all four seasons.

“The bridges don’t justappear the weekend beforethe festival and disappearthe weekend after,” he said.

While there is no concreteway to track how many peo-ple come the county specifi-cally to visit the coveredbridges, Winchell said hehas heard there have been

upwards of 50,000 peoplevisiting the festival.

“There is no point of entryfor the bridges,” he said.“Some people may not evenvisit the fairgrounds duringthe festival and just drivearound to see the bridges.”

The strength of the Cov-ered Bridge Festival, whichis held Oct. 11 and 12 at theAshtabula County Fair-grounds, is the bridges them-selves, Winchell said.

The bridges are a massivedraw for visiting AshtabulaCounty, he said.

“Definitely one of the top10 reasons in the county fordrawing folks in,” Winchellsaid.

The covered bridges

appeal to a wide spreadgroup of people. The bridgesevoke an agricultural andcultural heritage, he said.

“The bridges provide thistime warp for people,” hesaid. “You can replicate astay at a Comfort Inn, buteach bridge is so unique.”

Winchell said the factAshtabula County is hometo both the longest and theshortest covered bridges inthe country draws a wholeother group of people to thearea.

“The Smolen-Gulf Bridgeand the Liberty Bridge pro-vide a whole differentopportunity to promotetourism in the county,” hesaid.

JEFFERSON — Wooden coveredbridges are a special symbol of Ashtab-ula County that receive special atten-tion from the county’s highway depart-ment, said County Engineer Tim Mar-tin.

The iconic spans are in very goodshape, thanks to the highway depart-ment’s bridge crew, a team that tendsto all of the 900 bridges and culverts inthe county’s inventory, Martin said.“Any repair, replacement or mainte-nance is done by the crew,” he said.

Despite appearances, repair to cov-ered bridges can be less challengingthan conventional cement-based struc-tures, Martin said. Trusses, for exam-ple, can appear above the driving sur-face, improving access for workers, hesaid.

“It makes inspections a little easier,”Martin said.

Special talents are asked of the crewwhen covered bridges require care.Timbers need to be cut and fitted, askill not usually found in many high-way employee job descriptions.

“They have to double as carpenters,”Martin said.

At one time, the county had a crew

devoted exclusively to the care of cov-ered bridges. But as soon as the newspans were built and the old ones refur-bished, the squad wasn’t needed, Mar-tin said.

“Once the bridges were up and oper-ating, (the county) disbanded thecrew,” he said.

Due to the county’s diligence, nomajor covered bridge repair projectsare on the agenda, Martin said. Work-ers keep busy removing graffiti fromthe spans, a chore that requires sandingand staining the wood, Martin said.

Crews may also occasionally have toreplace a structural member due to rot.The newer bridges, however, havebeen built with treated timber and“species-select” siding that can resistweather and decay, Martin said. Thecounty maintains a stockpile to timbersin case sudden problems pop up, hesaid.

Given the level of tender, loving carelavished on the landmarks, bridgebuffs can expect to see their favorites— even the oldest ones — for the fore-seeable future, Martin said.

“I don’t know why not,” Martin said.“With the proper care and mainte-nance, they can stand a very longtime.”

Wooden coveredbridges requirespecial care

THE TRANSPORTATION Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21) as amended by theTEA-21 Restoration Act established the National Historic Covered Bridge PreservationProgram (NHCBPP). This program includes preservation of covered bridges that are list-ed, or are eligible for listing, on the National Register of Historic Places. The developmentof the Covered Bridge Manual is one of the research projects funded through NHCBPP.

PIERPONT TOWNSHIP— The Ashtabula CountyBarn Quilt Steering Com-mittee will dedicate thecounty’s first 8-by-8-footbarn quilt during the Cov-ered Bridge Festival, Oct. 11and 12.

The dedication ceremonyis 2 p.m. Oct. 12 at thebridge, which is in the Gra-ham Road Metropark, westend of Graham Road, offStanhope-KelloggsvilleRoad.

In September, the county’sfirst barn quilt on a coveredbridge was installed on thenorth side of this Town lat-tice bridge. The quilt’s pat-tern is “Benson’s Bridge”and was selected by mem-bers of the Benson family. The Benson family donated

the land for the Metroparkwhen it was removed fromthe byway in 1971. Withoutthe donation of land fromBob and Helen Benson, thebridge probably would havebeen lost.

Bob Benson, 92, has sincemowed the grass around thebridge and kept watch overthe structure, which waserected in 1913 over theAshtabula River.

The bridge has specialmeaning for Benson: Hisgrandfather was on the crewthat re-constructed it overthe Ashtabula River, he said.

The steering committeefunded the barn quilt, valuedat $500. It was painted byKaren Rose and installed byJeffrey Scribben of ArtisticWoodworks and several vol-

unteers.In addition to dedicating

the barn quilt Oct. 12, thesteering committee hasadopted the bridge for thefestival. On both days, therewill be live music, food andspecial guests at the bridge.Specifically:

■ Hot dogs roasted overapple firewood (for a dona-tion);

■ Assorted beverages;■ Covered bridge pop-

corn for a donation. A spe-cial blend of colorful,Ashtabula County-grownpopcorn from CoveredBridge Gardens, will beused. The colorful popcornswill be available for pur-chase.

A replica of the Benson’sBridge quilt will be raffledoff during the festival. This2-by-2-foot barn quilt is areplica of the barn quilt onthe covered bridge. It wasproduced by JeffreyScribben of Artistic Wood-works. Tickets are $5 eachand the winner will bedrawn 4 p.m. Sunday at theGraham Road bridge.
