Welcometothe32ndF-100WesternNationals!It’s been thirty-two years since the first thoughts of a show were planned out at a dinner in Arizona. I’m sure those truckers never expected it to last this long or even end up in Anaheim, California. Be sure to read Gary Ewing’s article on page 26 and learnabout the history of the F-100 Western Nationals.

I’ve been doing the Chairman’s job since 2006 and I’ve come to appreciate how important it is to use all the resources of available inside and outside of the club to make this show happen. Our show (I should say your show) cannot be done by one person, it takes many to be successful, it takes many long hours all year to get things done and I appreciate everyone’s contributions.

Since 2006 the Orange County Chapter of Pickups Limited has added many vendors and supporters who have stuck with us in good and bad times, adding value to each show. A special thanks to all of our vendors and sponsors. Be sure to visit all of them to say thanks for their support.

Each year we hear the stories from those who have attended via emails, postings on the web or just in bench racing around town. If you attended last year’s show you will have to agree that the quality of the trucks were off the hook!! With today’s builders imagination, aftermarket parts availability and some Benjamin’s all is possible and you can expect the quality of builds to even get better.

There always seems to be some questions on how Pickups Limited judges these beautiful trucks for awards. It’s pretty simple. We don’t. You, the show participants do.

If you’re attending the F-100 Western Nationals with the expectation of receiving an award for your pride and joy, then you’ve come to the show for the wrong reason. This is a “Shine and Show” event. Shine ‘em up and come show ‘em off. If you’re one of the fortunate ones to receive an award, it’s just all that much better.

There are events, like the Grand National Roadster show, where judging is done on a professional level. The Ridler award and AMBER are special awards that come to mind. The F-100 Western Nationals isn’t that kind of an event.

Speaking about awards, this is our show and we put it on for you. You are our guests and we’re glad you came. When you make your choices for awards you’ll notice none of our chapter trucks are eligible. Although we give an award to one of our own members, it’s chosen by us for a member who has stood out during the past year. All other awards are chosen by our guests, for our guests.

The Western Nationals is about getting together to see old friends, meeting new ones and swapping stories.

1953FordF-100Owner:DwayneRichardsonTheRedClassicAKA“HICCUP”For years, Dwayne Richardson had an old ‘53 Ford F-100. Mostly it was taking up room in his garage while tinkered here and there with trying to restore it. Then one day he decided to get serious. He brought it to Hot Rods and Custom Stuff in Escondido, California, first for an engine swap. Apparently Dwayne wanted them to install a Hemi which he had seen in the shop. They had already swapped the engine and installed a new radiator when it was decided that Dwayne would have the shop complete the restoration.

Except for some missing parts, the body was in pretty good shape and did not need much rust repair so some of the bodywork was done before the body was taken off the frame.

The motor is a 325 Dodge Hemi made in 1957 which has been rebuilt. The exhaust flanges are from Krogh Welding. The 355ci Dodge Hemi sports an Edelbrock 500-cfm four-barrel carb, Offenhauser dual-plane aluminum manifold, O’Brien Trucker valve covers, Schneider Racing cam, Egge cast pistons (bumping compression to 9.25:1), Powermaster 140-amp alternator, Joe Hunt electronic ignition system and a set of Taylor 8mm wires. It’s capable of producing 335-plus horsepower and 375-plus ft-lbs of torque.

Were you with us yesterday? No.... well why not? You missed out on one of the best gatherings of the year. That’s right, the show is great but the Friday Cruise and dinner are really something special.

On Friday June 20th, we did an old fashion cruise down to the beach to check out the “beautiful people of Orange County”. We hit Laguna Beach at Low Tide and crawled around their famous tide pools. Some of us needed towels to dry off a bit.

After the tide pools we wandered north to check out some unreal houses and views of Corona Del Mar and parts of the Newport Yacht harbor.

There was a “No Host” dinner starting at 6:00pm Friday evening at El Torito, right next to the headquarters Hotel, the Ayers Suites. We caught up with old friends and met a few new onesall while enjoying a taste of Uncle Walt’s famous Cherries! They are powerful but good. And all of this is before the show even began!

After viewing all of those material things, it was time to get back to nature with a drive up the beautiful Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve. While Traveling north in this beautiful area, we were treated to views of various wildlife including those that were taking off from nearby John Wayne Airport, not to mention numerous hikers and bikers.

Just a few more miles up the road brought us to our lunch stop at The District at Tustin Legacy. Here we had our choice of anything we wanted to eat from Chick-Fil-A and In-N-Out to the Chocolate Factory.

Pickups Limited of Orange County participates in dozens of events each year. Sometimes we just go out driving for fun, just

like the old days. Every month there is at least one event scheduled for members to attend and they are made aware of dozens of other events in our newsletter. Sometimes there are even last minute calls and e-mails calling everybody together for that emergency run to the Donut Shop or junk yard. These type of activities have helped boost our numbers to become the largest Chapter within the Pickups Limited family.

Pickups Limited of Orange County is a forum for owners and enthusiasts of 1948-1956 Ford “F Series” trucks to get together and exchange information. We drive our trucks week in and week out. We are always on the move doing a cruise, show, shop tour, swap meet, or weekend trip. Our trucks are always safe and ready to go thanks to our annual Safety Check at Glenn’s Alignment and Brake in Costa Mesa where all hands are on deck to check things out. Our safety check is one of the most complete in the business covering over 70 check points. We even pull wheels and brake drums on the trucks that are so equipped to do a complete brake inspection. Very few clubs provide this type of venue for their members to ensure the safety and reliability of their rides. TheNSRAcan’tevensaythat!Besides the F-100 Western Nationals, Jeff’s Fun Run kicks off the year in Southern California as a poker run and shop tour. We are also a part of the annual Cruisin for a Cure every September. These and other efforts throughout the year enable us to carry out some charity work. President’sPage...WHAT’SWITHWINNINGANAWARD?BYSTEVESTILLWELL,President,PickupsLimited,OrangeCountyChapterOne of, if not the most difficult functions of hosting a show is to figure out a way to have the trucks judged in a fair way along with presenting them properly. In the 32 year lifespan of the F-100 Western Nationals, there have been many methods employed by the show committee in search of the perfect means to ascertain the best of the best when it comes to

workmanship, attention to detail, paint, finish, design and execution of off of the above in the fabrication of these fine rides.

During my tenure at Truckin’ and Street Trucks magazines, I have seen everything from a drive-thru method of judging a show with literally thousands of trucks in attendance to the basic selection of winners by the show promoters. I can recall one weekend in Texas where the key guy promoting the show literally asked me which trucks I had selected to shoot for magazine features…and why. Every one of them won an award that day but I do believe my crew had selected the best-of-the-best for magazine feature material.

One method that former club president Bill Lee employed at

an Old Fart’s show was interesting to say the least. Just around the corner from where Bill used to live in Corona is a very historical cemetery that had fallen into terrible disrepair from a lack of maintenance. The Old Fart’s Club came up with the idea of holding a benefit event to cultivate monies to save this cemetery, and one of the most unique ways to distribute trophies that any of us had ever heard of. The show committee provided what appeared to be hand-made, unique awards, which were for sale for $25.00 each. Here is the catch. You could buy yourself an award, but it was highly suggested that you present it to the vehicle owner you feel best deserves recognition as a top show vehicle. Some vehicle owners left with three awards, some left with nothing, but no one left upset about winning or not!

Ironically, our show committee uses your votes to determine the winners of today’s event. It is called Popular Vote. You get one pick per registration which means the general consensus of all that vote determines today’s trophy winners, including Best of Show. I applaud all of you who take the time

to vote. Truthfully, I am amazed at how honest this form of judging works. Best part is you had a hand in selecting the winners of today’s event!

This show is based on Pickups Limited, OC hosting an Annual Ford Family Reunion. I only get the opportunity to see many of you once a year and definitely appreciate you making the effort to attend. My fellow club members feel the same way as I watch the intense greetings, smiling faces, hugs and handshakes. Thanks for coming and enjoy the day. We will be moving the event up a few weeks in June 2015, so mark your calendars.

ABOUT USPickups Limited began in April, 1968 as the result of an ad placed in the Penny Saver. Our Orange County Chapter is the oldest and currently the largest of 7 Chapters found throughout Southern California, with membership limited to 1948-56 F-1 and F-100 pickups and panels. We are an active non-profit organization. Each June we host the largest all Ford truck show in the Western United States, the F-100 Western Nationals while every January we produce Jeff’s Fun Run, a poker run throughout the car culture of LA and Orange Counties. Our business meetings are on the second Thursday of each month at Ken Grody Ford in Buena Park (info below) and we usually plan one group outing each month. You would be surprised where they show up. Trucks can be found on E-bay, Auto and Truck Trader and in Drive magazine as well as various F-1 & F-100 on-line sites including pickupslimited.com and at many of the local cruise events. You might even find one in your own neighborhood! If you feel adventurous, you can even build a brand new 1956 F-100 from parts that many vendors provide!• Where can I get parts and repairs? Check the flip side for a listing of great vendors that support Pickups Limited.• Can I do repairs myself? Many of us do most of the mechanical tasks ourselves. That’s half the fun. There also are many books available from mechanical to paint and body to interior total restoration.• Do I have to own a truck to join? Yes but it can be a work in progress. The love for the truck is what comes first. If you are looking for a truck, maybe we can help. • Do I have to be a member to participate in Club events? Not at all! Non members are always welcome. But if you do a "Run" in something other than a F-1 or F-100, we might ask you to follow the pack.• How can I get a ride in a F-100? Show up at a meeting or event and ask!• How can I join Pickups Limited? Come to a meeting or one of our events for the first step. There is a basic probationary period required.• Do I need special insurance for such an old vehicle? Not really, it depends on the value of the truck. Many companies will offer premium coverage although there are speciality insurance carriers that can insure your baby for the full stated value.

Motivation...byDaleBeverleyWhat keeps me motivated after being a part of Pickups Limited for nearly 40 years? It’s a combination of many things but so far this year has been off and running with the New Year’s Day cruise, Jeff’s Fun Run VI, and the latest event at the Air Show in Chino. We are also fortunate to have incredible nice weather to drive our trucks while the Mid-West and East Coast dig themselves out of snow, rain, and tornados. They can only wait for their weather to warm up, read Truckin’ magazines or look at YouTube on the internet. Yet we on the other hand can go out today or tomorrow and the weather will probably not be an issue.

I can also go out in my garage and I walk by a recently completed frame just waiting for me to assemble with parts already purchased, imagining the completed project, but already thinking about the next one after. Also thinking about cross country trips to the Super-Nats in Tennessee as well as some of the Super Tours, 30 plus years of Western Nationals and North South Runs, and planning for the next events for this year. But all of these would mean nothing if we did not have other people who can also share similar interest. It is great to have Pickups Limited to do just that.

Since we are celebrating the 32nd Annual Western Nationals this year, I would like to comment on some reasons this particular run has been such a motivational experience to me.

Except for a few years the run was held predominately at Lake Havasu, those other few years were at Laughlin, and finally the decision was made to move the run to southern California in 2004. During those early years the primary motivation was to just get your truck to the event. That

meant preparations to the truck needed to be made mechanically, and driver comfort had to be considered for the five to six hour drive to Arizona. To me, driving the truck and having it perform reliably there and back was a big motivational factor. Sure I also enjoyed the run by seeing friends,

other trucks, eating different food and usually enjoying the host hotels, but the drive was the challenge.

One such motivational year was the 7th Annual Western Nationals, which I attended with an additional goal. We wanted to drive to the Super-Nats in Pigeon Forge which was about a month after the Western Nationals that year. My father said he would go with us if we could find him a truck at the event which we could purchase if the price was right. Fortune smiled upon us because we bought a

nice, completed ‘56 big window at the affordable price of $10,000. After we got back to Orange County we hopped on a plane to Phoenix, drove that truck back to Orange County and three weeks later drove that truck and my ’56 Panel to the Super-Nats. That was another amazing and motivating experience.

It all began in June of 1982 while sitting in the parking lot at the Pepper Mill Hotel/Casino at the Reno Run and me sharing a great idea that I had with my very good friend, Wendell Smith. The thought had occurred to me that there was an opportunity to replace the “Run to the River” car show with a great truck show for the F-100’s, since the Early Times Street Rod Club had decided to end their yearly show.

I had been a member of Pickups Limited since 1976 and already president of two chapters, one being San Gabriel Valley and the other was Westminster, which I had formed. I had just brought Wendell into the club and he was a tremendous help to me in forming the newly created chapter. In order to make Westminster a success we decided that doing an F-100 show was just what we needed. So after going over my thoughts and ideas with Wendell we started laying out the plans and Wendell’s house at the river became the run headquarters, and we were off and running.

I had another idea, since we were putting the run in Lake Havasu, I contacted my friend Boyd McWilliams who was a member of Arizona F-100’s. It would be a new venture to have two states, Pickups Limited of Southern California, Westminster Chapter and F-100’s of Arizona, come together to make this the best run we could collectively put on.

I contacted several locations in Lake Havasu and we settled on the Ramada Inn’s golf course. The Ramada let us use the 18th fairway for the “Show & Shine” and they were very accommodating by changing the course for that day to have the golfers play the front 9 holes twice. Wendell contacted his sources for the trophies, the shirts and he organized the committees. At the same time Boyd was making arrangements with the Arizona group and getting his committees together. After many meeting at Wendell’s house we had everything started. I contacted the Mayor for permission to use the city, the police for parade escorts and I had to acquire all the necessary permits from City Hall. We also needed a host hotel, so I picked the Shakespeare Inn, manager, Paul Rogers, worked to accommodate all of our needs.

We got a big boost when Bradley Ford of Havasu heard of the event and stepped up to be the main sponsor. They helped with donating and getting prizes for our raffle. The committee also canvassed the city businesses and shops for raffle and posted flyers throughout the city. We also got help from Relics and Rods, a local car club.

I asked Ed “Big Daddy” Roth to attend the show and to do shirts and memorabilia as well as lead our parade down McCulloch Blvd. to the Ramada Inn. He was shooting videos from his cool side hack. We also had great press coverage from Steve Stillwell of Truckin’ Magazine and Howard Montgomery.

I was honored when the committee asked me to do the artwork for the flyer which would also become the artwork etched in glass and framed for the awards to be handed out at the banquet. And the banquet was terrific, but it had to be moved from the Shakespeare Inn to the Elks Lodge to accommodate an overwhelming 480 people for dinner, dance and the award presentations.

So there it was the first F-100 River Run put on by two clubs from two states all for the purpose of bringing together as many Ford F-100 pickups and to encourage more planned truck events for all members, their families and guests.

Attending the 1st River Run were 113 entrants, 37 were members of Pickups Limited of So California and 22 members of Arizona F-100’s. Of the Pickups Limited members eight are still active members, they are John Blanco, Carlos Flores, Jim Moore, Leonard Ramos, Don Warner, Frank Reyes, Dale Beverly and me, Gary Ewing. I want to personally thank all of the members of Pickups Limited, Orange County chapter for being the caretakers of the now “F-100 Western Nationals” that continually make the run bigger and better each year.

It is never too early to make plans for one of the first and what we think is the best event of the new year, Jeff’s Fun Run. 2015 promises to keep the tradition of having tons of fun while driving your truck, hot rod, motorcycle, or yes, even the Honda. The event remains a Poker Run (driving event) of about 50 miles in length. There is no freeway driving on this route that will take us to several premier shops and businesses throughout our area and no, you don’t need to know how to play poker! In fact, if your hot rod is down for the count, it doesn’t matter what you drive or ride to this rain or shine event but whatever you choose, plan to have a great time.

The starting point as always for the 7th annual Jeff’s Fun Run is at Ken Grody Ford 6211 Beach Blvd, Buena Park. If you have attended any of our previous events, you know that the pre event parking is tight which just proves that this is where everybody wants to be! Remember this is not a race so it really doesn’t matter when you start or finish the Poker Run. The first vehicle departs from Ken Grody Ford at 8:30am.
