Recently, I was sitting a table with some young dairy producers at a Young Breeders School in PEI. We were chatting about our backgrounds and our home farms, and we got to talking about Milking Shorthorns. One of the young peo-ple asked me: “Why would you have Milking Shorthorns when everyone else has Holsteins?” It was not an accusatory or condescending question...it was simply a question from a young person who had never considered anything other than Holsteins for their dairy herd.
Of course, I had no trouble answering this question. Milking Shorthorns have the best figures in the industry for Calving Ease, Longevity, Milking Tem-perament, Fertility, and Somatic Cell Score. A recent breed comparison study commissioned by Jersey Canada, while flawed by using an artificially low av-erage milk production for the breed, still showed Milking Shorthorns to have the highest revenue per cow, due to lower feed costs and more economically favourable protein to fat ratios. If the production figures for Shorthorns were closer to reality, it is possible that Milking Shorthorns could come out ahead in most financial measures.
At the same time, I am realistic enough to know that Milking Shorthorns are perhaps not ideal for every type of dairy herd. Every breed has it’s place, depending on the production system that each producer employs. For dairy farmers looking for cattle that require less labour, fewer veterinary costs, less feed costs, and the ability to produce from grass and forages over increasingly expensive grains...Milking Shorthorns should get a long look.
About ten years ago, I heard from both new and established Milking Short-horn breeders that if the breed was going to grow and remain profitable, we collectively needed to increase component percentages, especially fat. Some herds had average fat tests as low as 3.3% due to the substantial impact of bulls like Outlaw, Othello and Peerless. As a result, fat production and percentage was more heavily weighted in the LPI formula and fat was a much larger con-sideration in sire selection. The result has been that in the past couple of years, first and second lactation cows show approximately a 0.2% advantage in fat percentage over mature cows! Milking Shorthorns still produce more protein per kg of butterfat than most breeds but now do not trigger the solids non-fat ratio penalties associated with lower fat percentages.
Constructive feedback from breeders along with dramatic improvements

in sire selection in the past decade are largely responsible for these types of improvement. My thanks to the breed leaders who have been active in push-ing the genetic improvement of the breed! Also of note is that the breed has gained almost a point and a half of final score on average in the past couple of years! Most newly proven sires have been above average for conformation, with some (like Logic and Mocha) being in double digits. Only Holsteins have shown the same level of genetic progress for type in the last few years, and of course the Holstein breed operates from a larger population with genomic selection and more rigorous genetic selection!
This all being said...it is not time to rest on our laurels. Genetic improvement remains a high priority, and the Board of Directors is reviewing the LPI formula once again with the goal of implementing changes in August 2014. Feedback received as part of a membership survey late in 2013 will be used in charting the future for our breed, as will technical assistance from the Canadian Dairy Network. We must continue to improve production and conformation in our cows while retaining the health and fertility traits that set our breed apart.
In my experience, progress is best achieved if goals are set to measure that progress. Our breed has not set aggressive performance goals in the past, but perhaps it is time to think big in an effort to keep pushing the breed forward.
6
What if by 2020, Canadian Milking Shorthorns averaged:1. 500 registrations per year (currently 325-350)2. 75 members per year (currently 45-50)3. 7500 kgs M per year (currently 7100 kgs)4. 3.9% fat (currently 3.75%)5. 3.45% protein (currently 3.3%)
If we were able to achieve or even come close to these goals, our breed would be in a much more sustainable position and would be increasingly attractive to new breeders. Feel free to contact me with your own ideas for goals that we as a breed should prioritize.
As always, I wish to thank those breeders that take the time to help promote the breed as a whole and not just their own herds. Your efforts are so essential to the breed’s success, as we lack the human or financial resources to do all of the breed promotion that we wish we could do. By contributing your ideas, your time, and your breeding stock, you are helping to grow the breed a little bit every day. I know that I’ve said it before, but if every established breeder sold to at least one new breeder every year, think of the growth that our breed could experience!
Some of my highlights from the past year include:A well attended Field Day and AGM in beautiful PEI last July, •with international guests and strengthening of bonds between Canadian breeders.Three Milking Shorthorn heifers in the Royal 4-H Classic Show for the •first time in my memory.A new Milk and Protein Champion in Koopycrest Mocha Ali Apple, the •result of an embryo purchase by a first time Milking Shorthorn owner! Congratulations to Shawn Koopman on Apple winning Grand Cham-pionship honours at Lindsay last September. I doubt there has ever been a cow in another breed that held National Grand Champion and All Time Milk Championship honours at the same time!International visitors from the United States, UK, Australia, and New •Zealand visiting herds across Canada.Embryo sales within Canada as well as to New Zealand, Ireland, and •the United Kingdom in the last year.
May 2014 be an even greater year for our breed. As always, I love to hear from all breeders, so feel free to give me a call or send me an email if you have questions, have cattle to sell, are looking to purchase animals, or have idea to benefit the breed!

Lately I have been hearing and read-ing a lot about making plans and vi-sions. Experts advise having a plan as to what you want to do or accomplish in the future. Some say have a 5 year plan. It is recommended to make it flexible because things change. Review it regularly and benchmark progress.
Do we have a plan within our breed? Our farms? Where do we see Milking Shorthorns in 3 years? 5 Years? Do we need to set some goals to strive for? I think we have seen great growth since I have become in-volved in the Society, but we cannot stop growing the breed or our ge-netic improvement. We need to open our farms up to other farmers so that they can see what attributes the modern Milking Shorthorn has, as well as the fact and that we have improved our breed from what many people may remember from the cows their grandfathers used to have.
I commend the Barretts for the great job that was done in organiz-ing and hosting the Field Day and AGM this past July. I would also like to thank Tim and Irene from Lynmark Farms for opening up their farm this past March as part of the East Central District Holstein tours. What a great way to show predominantly Holstein breeders that our Milking Shorthorns are suitable for all types of management systems.
I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible this summer at the Field Day and AGM this summer. If you have any ideas for breed growth and promotion, please contact one of the directors, Ryan or myself and share. We are always open to you, the breeders. If you want to stop by our farm and share, we love visitors as well.

Top 20 LPI Cows - April 2014

Greetings from the American Milking Shorthorn Society! 2013 was a year of transition for the AMSS as our long time Executive Secre-tary, Dave Kendall, accepted a position with Taurus Sires as Genetics Coordinator. Dave expressed regret about leaving his position, but he felt blessed to be leaving a “dream job for another dream job.” Fellow Milking Shorthorn breeder, Cory Salzl from Minnesota, was hired in March 2013 to replace Dave.
The 2013 Annual Meeting and National Sale was held in McPherson, Kansas. 32 lots of quality females and top end embryos were sold. The high selling animal was Halpin’s Eloise, sired by Kuszmar Alfairs Othello and consigned by the Halpin family of Illinois. She was purchased by John and Marjorie Kuszlyk, Batavia, New York for $4200. Our members are looking forward to the upcoming Annual Meeting and Sale, sched-uled for June 25-28, 2014 in Westfield, Massachusetts. Canadian breed-ers are welcome to join us in New England this summer!
2013 was a great year for American Milking Shorthorns in the show ring. We were blessed to have four different National Champion cows.
Halpins Mona II• was Grand Champion at the Eastern National show for Halpin & Mackinson of Kempton, IL. Mona II is sired by Cates Tangerine Target. Lake Effect MD Laurin 7215• was the Grand Champion at the Northeast National for owners John & Kirsten Anderson and Greg & Liz Clark. Laurin 7215 is sired by Kuszmar Megadeth. The World Dairy Expo Grand Champion was the perennial •bridesmaid, Lands-Brook Christina-EXP-ET. Christina, who is sired by Othello, won the big prize as a 10 year old cow. She is owned by Lands-Brook Farms of St. Olaf, IA. The Winter National Championship was won by • Sageser Clay
Penny. Sired by Bar-D Kuszmar Clay, Penny is owned by Morgan Sageser of Shelbyville, Kentucky.
Several preeminent herds held reduction sales during the fall season.

Lands-Brook Christina-EXP EX-96
The famous Innisfail herd of California held a heifer sale during World Dairy Expo week and the Ecuafarm herd of Texas held a very success-ful sale in November. Both sales were well attended and many animals went to new breeders.
Many sires are now receiving genetic evaluations as we are start-ing to reap the benefits of the many young sires being sampled by AI organizations. The bull studs are reporting a strong demand for Milking Shorthorn genetics for both pure and crossbreeding. They have inter-estingly reported that their commercial customers are specifically ask-ing for polled heads, roan color, and purebred bulls.
The number one PPR bull in the United States is a B Jurist son (Ecuafarm BJ Don Juan), closely followed by the Australian sire Panorama Royal Treble. It is interesting to note that 19 of the top 20 sires in the US genetic evaluations are either 50% or 75% Milking Shorthorn. The top proven full herdbook bulls are Gold Mine Ebrose KAO Shale, Clayside Milk Money, and Vinra Frost Ted. Shale and Ted have both been used as sires of sons.
The top PPR cow continues to be Kulp-Gen Jurist Anika-P-EXP-ET by a wide margin. She is a B Jurist daughter of Rovin Derek Accent-P and a full sister to Kulp-Gen Jurist Ace at Select Sires. She is also the dam of the popular young sire Kundes Golden Logic Adventure at Accelerated Genetics.
2014 looks to be a banner year for the American Milking Shorthorn cow. Previously high grain prices have fallen, high quality forage is more readily available and the drought is starting to decrease it’s stranglehold on the western USA. Producers are receiving record breaking milk prices and the beef market is at an all time high. Good times in-deed!

At the end of 2013 milk prices paid to farmers here in the UK had crept up to around 33p/litre and some of the supermarkets were adver- tising the fact that they were paying farmers a reasonable price for their milk so as to encourage British Agriculture. Unfortunately some things never change and at the beginning of March one of the major super-markets slashed the price of milk in its stores to 25p per pint. Within days the other major supermarkets had followed suit and so the downward pressure on farm gate price will again be apparent. It is very difficult making future investment decisions when there is so little confidence in future prices. Milk producers are still leaving the industry at a rate of 2 every day and the number of producers has fallen from 30,000 to 10,000 in the last ten years.
Against these rather grim statistics, The Dairy Shorthorn Society has enjoyed a very successful 2013 with an increased number of registra-tions. New buyers of Dairy Shorthorns have been very pleased with their purchasers and seem genuinely surprised at the benefits they are seeing through increased fertility, lower veterinary costs and lower replacement costs. We have known for years what these benefits can
deliver to the bottom line. Our challenge is convincing others of these benefits.
Our National Dairy Shorthorn Show held at the Cheshire show has now become an established fixture on the summer show circuit and last year again attracted a large entry of top

quality Shorthorns. This years champion was the senior cow Earlsgift Cactus from Edward Crank’s Earlsgift herd. Cactus is sired by the RCG bull Drisgol Watzon who last year topped the Dairyco figures for £PLI.
The Royal Highland Show saw records being broken by Stephen Girvan who won the championship for the third year in succession with the same cow, Bishopsbrae Royal Kathleen
Red Cattle Genetics has had another excellent year with semen sales continuing to increase with over 50% of the sales going to non mem-bers, illustrating the number of farmers using Shorthorns commercially and in many cases for crossing on to black and whites. The revenue from semen sales is a valuable contribution to the finances of the Society. The biggest problem is getting young bulls through all the tests required to allow them to go on to centre for semen collection for export. The positive message, however is that the selection procedure adopted by the RCG Directors is proving to be very successful with three out of the last four bulls selected returning a positive £PLI proof.
Semen from Oceanbrae Logic’s Plato has been used quite extensively here in the UK and his initial proof has come back with a very encourag-ing £PLI 56.
The spread of bovine TB in the UK continues to cause huge problems for many farmers. Certain areas of the country are on annual testing for TB and restrictions on movement of animals from farms which have a reactor means that sale of pedigree animals is impossible until further clear tests are obtained. The reservoir of infection in wildlife, particularly in badgers is proving difficult to control on both a practical and politi-cal level. Some of the population think that the life of a badger is more important than the life of a cow – let them eat badgers!
If any Canadian breeders are visiting the UK please let me know and I will make sure you get to see some Dairy Shorthorns during your stay.

Our breed is progressing well, but certainly we have some challenges ahead.
Despite the severe decline in the Australian dairy industry due to low milk prices, drought and some young people wanting an easier way of life, our registration numbers remain static with well over 2000 each year. While we have fewer herds, some of the remaining ones are growing larger herds and registering large numbers of calves.
We have close to 300 members and a large number of these do not milk cows; however, many of these non-registering members make an enormous contribution to our society. One of these members is Lloyd Peters, who after retiring from dairying many years ago was a long time our classifier and field officer for our Society, encouraging young people as he travelled the country. For about a decade now, Lloyd has pro-duced our “Year Book” which is the envy of all other breed societies. It includes registrations, classification, production figures, membership lists, photos and more. This year’s book includes articles on at least five herds that have been operating for over 100 years by the same family, and most of them on the same farm.
Some years back, we only had one AI company taking in Illawarra bulls, but now there are at least 5 companies wanting them. This keeps our very active young “Illawarra Development Program” committee busy.
Production-wise, our members continue to excel with almost all of our National production records having been set in the last 10 years. Each year, we have more cows reaching the exemplary status of achiev-ing 100,000 litres lifetime, for which they get a certificate.
Over the last 10 years, Illawarras have easily had the greatest percent-age increase in production of all the 7 breeds listed by ADHIS (Australian Dairy Herd Improvement Scheme). These figures do not include those sired by non-Illawarra sires, eg Red Holsteins.
Illawarras continue to do well in the interbreed classes at Royal Shows, often being placed second and occasionally winning. The best

example of this is when Glenbrook Venus 19 was made Supreme Cham-pion at the Royal Adelaide Show in 2012, having been placed first by every breed judge. She also holds National Production Records for each of her first 3 lactations.
Our cattle are becoming much better accepted by commercial dairy farmers now than they have been for a long time. On several occasions in recent years, Illawarras have had the top price at a combined breeds sale and at Toowoomba show last year, the Illawarra sale average was far better than the Holstein average.
It is very pleasing to me to see most of the breeds in Australia working well together, something that did not happen at one time. Today, we have an All Breeds Show Ethics Committee, an All Breeds Taskforce to advise “ Dairy Australia” on breeding policy. Combined breed calf days, sales, youth camps and shows are becoming the norm. Recently, our local Illawarra branch in New South Wales has invited the Ayrshires to be part of our Illawarra Spring Fair which has been going for about 47 years. We will judge all the cattle together and then have champions for each breed.
In terms of international cooperation, I would like to see each of the Shorthorn-based breeds around the world give each other’s Societies complimentary membership so there is a constant flow of positive in-formation that can be used in each country for promotion. This has al-ready taken place between Australia and Canada.
As for the state of the dairy industry in Australia, producers in the southern states, NSW and Victoria find the situation not nearly as bad as it was 18 months ago, and now one dairy company is offering 5 year contracts with no second tier priced milk. Queensland produc-ers say they need a big milk price rise to stay viable.

A few years ago, Shawn Koopmans of Picton, Ontario made his first purchase of Milking Shorthorn genetics by purchasing a group of embryos from a top brood cow in the United States. While he knew he was investing in top quality genetics from the top of the breed, he could not have expected that first venture in Milking Shorthorns to yield a National Show Grand Champion and now an All Time Single Lactation Milk and Protein Champion in the same cow!
Koopycrest Mocha Ali Apple VG-88 recently passed the 305 day mark of her second lactation, and in doing so has set new records for Canadian Milking Shorthorns with 16,742 kgs of milk and 488 kgs of protein. This record (at three times a day milking) eclipses the previous records of 15,815 kgs of milk and 468 kgs of protein set by Oceanbrae Joe 34th VG-85 in 2007.
Her 676 kgs of fat places her second all time in that category, just behind her maternal sister, Oceanbrae Fawn’s Accent-P EX-91 who established a new record of 696 kgs of fat earlier this year. Apple’s BCA

for this record-setting lactation are a staggering 620-620-555.
Not only has Apple set a new record for production, but she was also Grand Champion at the Canadian National Milking Shorthorn Show in Lindsay, Ontario this past September, showing as a Three Year Old. It is a rare feat indeed for a National Production Champion to also be a Grand Champion show cow in the same lactation! Apple was also the #3 LPI cow in Canada in April 2014.
Apple is sired by the Australian sire Clarefield Mocha, marketed by Semex Alliance. Her dam is Rovin Derek Ali Accent-P EX, mother of high indexing sons and daughters in both Canada and the United States and a former All American show winner. Apple’s first daughter by GMC Rebel Logic recently calved for the first time and is scored Very Good 86 in first lactation. This cow family is proving across multiple herds and two countries that it transmits components and type consistently, making it a family in demand for new and established breeders alike.
Shawn Koopmans and his wife Justine and their growing family farm in picturesque Prince Edward County. Shawn has a passion for polled genetics, which is why he became interested in the Accent family in the first place. While Apple didn’t come out polled, he has flushed her to some polled bulls in the past year. Shawn also has Holsteins and Brown Swiss, with a number of polled individuals in both of those breeds. He first became exposed to the breed through friendship with the Prinzen family and helping them at the National Show in Lindsay.
Congratulations to Shawn for his continued success with Apple! It serves as an example of what can be accomplished with modest investment in high quality Milking Short-horn genetics!

The Canadian Milking Shorthorn Society held our annual Field Day and AGM on July 20th, 2013 at Oceanbrae Farms, owned by the Barrett Family in Belmont, Prince Edward Island. This was the first Field Day in PEI since the Barretts hosted in 1999. The Oceanbrae herd is one of the longest established Milking Shorthorn herds in Canada, having started with Shorthorns in 1950. Oceanbrae Milking Shorthorns was previously recognized as a Master Breeder herd and has been the top production herd in Canada in recent years. Fred Barrett, also a Director of the CMSS for Eastern Canada, farms along with his son, Matt.
This year, breeders from four provinces as well as a number of PEI dairy farmers from other breeds were joined by six visitors from the United States (including Susan Lee, AMSS President) as well as Graham Madeley, Past-President of the Shorthorn Society of the UK. The Barrett’s and other Canadian breeders were keen to exchange information with these international guests and avenues for continued international co-operation and genetic exchange were discussed.
The day included some fun guessing games, two judging classes (with Garnet Schellen of Forever Schoon Ayrshires serving as official judge), a noon meal with over 80 people in attendance, a fun auction, and pre-sentation of production awards as well as two additional awards. Valley Crest Alice 39 EX-93 was named CMSS Cow of the Year for 2013. She

is owned by the Naylor Family of Kleefeld, Manitoba, with the Naylors present to accept their award. The CMSS Distinguished Service Award was given to Mike Sullivan of Maple Inn Farms, Peterborough, Ontario.
At the 2013 AGM, CMSS President John Knox and CMSS Secretary-Treasurer Ryan Barrett reviewed 2012 programs, events and financials with assembled members. 2012 was the best year for registrations in many years, and a number of new breeders continue to be attracted to the breed. The Society continues to have healthy finances and ongoing growth in interest in domestic animal sales as well as international semen and embryo exports. With John Knox finishing a three year term as president, Dave Prinzen of Prinsville Dairy Farms, Bloomfield, ON was introduced as the new CMSS President. Assuming the Vice-President role is Don Richardson of Richford Farms, St. Marys, Ontario. Johna-than Eccles of Holstein, Ontario was also welcomed as a new Director representing Ontario.
The weekend also featured a small tag sale offered by the Oceanbrae herd. The Oceanbrae Summer Selections Sale ended with nine head selling for an average of $2172. New breeders Greg and Amy Kelly of Lanark, ON were the volume buyers of the sale, purchasing four head. Other lots sold to breeders in Ontario, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island.

At the recent 2013 Field Day and AGM, the Canadian Milking Shorthorn Society was proud to present the 2013 Cow of the Year Award to Valley Crest Alice 39, owned by Ivan and Diane Naylor of Kleefeld, Manitoba. Alice 39 was bred by Harold and Scott Patterson of the Master Breeder Valley Crest herd and was purchased by the Naylor Family when they purchased the Valley Crest herd several years ago. Sired by Valley Crest Monster, she is classified EX-93-4E.
Success in a number of categories led Alice 39 to be named Cow of the Year. Besides being classified EX-93-4E, she was also the 5th place Mature Cow at the World Dairy Expo in 2008. A high component testing cow, her best record came at 10 years old with 8882 kgs of milk at 4.5% fat and 3.1% protein. She produced just shy of 50,000 kgs of milk in 7 lactations.
Alice’s eldest daughter is scored EX-92, and she has four other daugh-ters in the Lady Grove herd. Another of her daughters was the high selling lot in the 2012 National Sale. Alice has also had embryos sell to the United Kingdom and she has a son in use in a herd in Ontario. Other cows nominated for the 2013 Cow of the Year Award were Prinsville Logic Starshine, owned by Prinsville Dairy Farms, Bloomfield, ON; Lynmark NS Clarica, owned by Lynmark Farms, Norwood, ON; and Northend Famous Player-P, owned by Brodie and Brenda Cupples, Thorsby, AB.

In 2014, the CMSS Board of Directors will be reviewing the current Lifetime Profit Index (LPI) that has been in place for a few years. At the same time, it was felt that this would be a good time to get input from breeders on what they would like to see emphasized in the LPI formula, with the goal of identifying the best all-around Milking Shorthorn males and females in Canada while driving genetic progress for all traits.
The Lifetime Profit Index is currently comprised of 12 traits divided into three categories: Production, Durability, and Health and Fertility. Each breed has different weights for the different components of the formula, and then uses a “constant” figure to artificially reduce the total variability of the scale. This constant (1039 points) was only introduced in 2013. That means that an animal with breed average LPI would have an LPI of approximately +1039 LPI, with the highest animals in the pop-ulation being around +2000 LPI.
The Production Component of LPI is worth 54% of total LPI, and is comprised of four traits:
Protein Yield (worth 51% of PROD)•Protein Deviation (worth 9% of PROD)•Fat Yield (worth 34% of PROD)•Fat Deviation (worth 6% of PROD)•
The Milking Shorthorn breed has a little higher emphasis on compo-nent deviations than some other breeds in an effort to select for high component percentages. According to genetic progress charts, the breed has seen significant improvement in fat percentages and kgs in the last few years.
The Durability Component of LPI is worth 31% of total LPI, and is also comprised of four traits:
Mammary System (36% of Durability)•Herd Life (32% of Durability•Feet & Legs (24% of Durability)•Dairy Strength (8% of Durability)•
Understanding LPIby Ryan Barrett, Secretary-Manager, CMSS
50
The Health and Fertility Component comprises 15% of total LPI, and is currently comprised of four traits, including:
Somatic Cell Score (48% of H & F)•Udder Depth (24% of H & F)•Daughter Fertility (20% of H & F)•Milking Speed (8% of H & F)•
In comparison to some other breeds, emphasis on Daughter Fertility has a small weight in LPI for Milking Shorthorns. The rationale for this is that due to the fact that most proven bulls have relatively few daugh-ters compared to some other breeds, there is less observed variability between sires for Daughter Fertility. As well, the Milking Shorthorn breed already has the best fertility averages in the industry, so this trait, while still important, is not as big of a priority for selection as a number of other traits.
For similar reasons, the Board is looking at decreasing the weight on Herd Life in the LPI formula, as variability between proven sires is low. On the other hand, a number of classification traits, especially Mam-mary System and Feet & Legs, are high correlated with Herd Life, so we will be getting CDN to look at the effect of increasing emphasis on those traits relative to Herd Life. While we still want to be selecting for long lived cows, we may have more success doing that using correlated traits due to our population size.
Other changes being examined include increasing emphasis on pro-tein production as well as introducing Lactation Persistency as a trait in Health and Fertility. Members with feedback on the LPI formula and the weighting of traits are welcome to talk with the Secretary-Manager or their local Director.
