The Telkwa is a long, high- volume kayak, but it is sur-prisingly nimble for its size and suits a wide variety of paddlers. The Telkwa was designed to be a full fledged ocean touring kayak capable of doing unsupported trips of at least a couple weeks duration. It will carry you and your gear to all parts of our coast with ease. The Telkwa with its unique combination of tracking and turning make it the an excellent choice for long distance touring or day tripping following the coast line closely.

A kAyAk is one of the best recreational investments anyone can make. But the initial outlay

of cash and choices you have for those dollars can seem daunting. So how to pick the correct one? Here are some points to consider, courtesy of Chris Ladner, the owner of Ecomarine on Granville Island in Vancouver, a consultant to thousands of kayak buyers over the years.1. know what you’re buying your kayak for.

This sounds obvious, but it’s not. “You need to be thinking not just what you imagine what the kayak could be used for, but what you intend to use it for further down the road,” says Chris.

Here’s where a crystal ball might come in handy. You may imagine tours of distant shores in Alaska, but in reality if all you will be doing is lake paddling from your cottage, a recreational boat will suffice. Here’s the general types and the purpose they’ll serve.

Recreational boats: These boats

are ideal for an hour or two in the bay, and work equally well from the deck of a yacht, motorboats or a summer cottage. These boats are generally shorter – 9.5 to 12 feet in length – and can have a range of options and material styles that dictate the cost. One important consideration is buoyancy. Look for a hatch and bulkhead that will ensure the boat won’t sink if swamped. If there is no bulkhead, you’ll need to install flotation bags before your trip.

Day trip boats: These are longer recreational boats starting at about 14 feet, resulting in more glide, speed and efficiency. One consideration is the boats may be narrower, which aids performance but means less stability.

touring boats: If you’re looking for more than just day trips you’re looking at boats longer than 14 feet to manage the storage demands and sea conditions you’ll meet. Most touring boats are in the general range of about 17 feet in length, making

When buying, a game plan helps. Here are some hints on how to navigate

the options.

Kayaks: How to buy

Page 9: 2014 Kayak Gear Guide

them faster, more efficient and capable of hauling gear – often several week’s worth, if need be.

other options: Kayaks can serve very particular purposes, such as the racing kayaks, which are very long but also very narrow; or fishing kayaks, which are usually sit-on-top, extra wide for stability and have lots of features specifically designed for fishing.

2. set your budget. The initial investment may seem large,

especially for the high-end boats, but keep in mind after the purchase there are few incidentals such as lift tickets or launching fees (at least not yet). In addition, kayaks hold their value and won’t need replacing for years, possibly decades – if ever.

Naturally, you need not spend much if budget is a consideration. Recreational boats can be the least expensive, but still with a vast range depending on the features and construction. The addage applies: you get what you pay for.3. think about the features and benefits you want.

There are lots of different things you can get for your kayak, and a good

first place to look is the hatches. The arrangements and styles vary by model, but a popular style is the two-piece with a neoprene cover below the strapped-on hatch. A style proven seaworthy is the one-piece rubber hatch, usually available as an oval that simply pulls off around a lip then pushes back on again.

The trick is matching the features you want with the style of kayak. For instance, rubber hatches may not be an option for the style of recreation boat you’re seeking.

The control device is another key consideration. A rudder controlled through cables attached to foot pedals is a popular configuration and allows for easy steering. An alternative is a skeg, a fin that pops down to add stability in wind and waves. This requires the additional skill of learning how to use a paddle blade to turn the boat.

The cross-section of your hull should also be part of your evaluation. The rounder the hull the faster it’s going to be, but at the cost of stability. A flatter bottom and defined keel will enhance stability and (with the keel) tracking.

Also, consider the amount of rocker in the hull – that is, curvature in the shape.

“The more rocker you have, the easier it is for the boat to turn, but the deeper the boat sits in the water so the slower it’s going to be,” says Chris. “So the tradeoff is lots of tracking means straight-line, fast speed and efficiency but harder to turn, and the more rocker means easier to maneuver in rough weather but slower.”

The construction type will be another key factor in choosing a kayak, which in large part is affected by budget. Plastic (polyethelene) is the most economical, quite tough and rugged but it’s a bit slower in the water and can get gouged, as it is a softer material. Thermoform is a middle-of-the-road option. It has the ruggedness of the softer plastic but the characteristics of the fiberglass for speed.

Higher in price are the fiberglass and finally kevlar options. These are considered the highest performing type of kayak, and also good for weight and durability.

There’s a kayak out there to suit just about every purpose, size and comfort style, if you take the time to research the options. If not, you could end up with something that curtails your enjoyment – hardly worth saving a few dollars on a discount purchase.

Your kayak options: Polypropylene construction

Polypropylene or rotomolded kayaks are probably the most common form of kayak today thanks to the injection molding technique that eliminates the costly layup of other construction types such as fibreglass. The main draws are affordability and durability, but on top of is the sheer number of options on the market.

A rotomolded involves heating the polypropylene in a spinning mold to ensure even distribution. It is then left to cool and finally given the added touches such as hatches, seats and bungy cords.

The material itself has benefits and drawbacks. A key drawback is it is heat sensitive, and so a poly kayak left on a car roof rack on a hot day, for instance, may form welts where the supports were located. Fortunately, being a durable material that can also be reversed, and heat with a heat gun or hair dryer applied to a corrected form can settle back into the original shape.

The strength of the product is a key consideration and important for the type of kayaking you might enjoy. River and

whitewater kayaks (covered in a different heading) take incredible beatings both by hitting rocks and being dragged to launch points. Sea kayakers have the same attraction to plastic for extreme conditions, particularly “rock gardening” or the hobby of riding kayaks through the current of a wave washing over offshore rocks. Poly boats will survive where fibreglass kayaks will not.

The downside isn’t necessarily the construction type but the design. The most affordable and widely distributed kayaks are arguably the worst sort: they may track poorly, paddle poorly, have limited features and generally be ungainly, unseaworthy and little better than a cheap inflatable dinghy. This can be a shame as a poorly chosen kayak bought with enthusiasm can end up being rarely used because it doesn’t accomplish what a kayak should.

A key consideration is flotation. Many less expensive kayaks don’t have flotation bags and so will sink if flooded. This is an important safety consideration that can be neglected. Make sure your kayak floats before setting out.

Your kayak options: Thermoform construction

Thermoform construction is relatively new, and uses sheets of plastic materials over a mold to shape it by heating, vacuum or pressure. The construction and material is similar to a car bumper. As such it has huge advantages, those being it is relatively inexpensive, tough and abrasion-resistant. As most car owners will know of their bumpers, they can take a bump.

Other advantages are a look similar to fibreglass, meaning your boat won’t appear to be a cheap plastic knock-off of a real kayak, for those who judge plastic kayaks that way. In addition, the exterior is highly UV resistant so that your bright shiny new kayak

will appear so for many years to come, whereas fibreglass is more prone to UV fading and cracking.

Thermoform kayaks are heavier than their fibreglass counterparts and often need reinforcing to prevent cracking, so don’t be surprised to find reinforcing bars designed into your thermoform kayak. Beyond that some may argue performance issues, those being flex and noise. But the bottom line is thermoform is an attractive, viable option for a kayak with lower costs and good looks.

The term composite comes from the composition of two materials in the construction: usually the fibreglass matt and the resin.

A typical kayak is covered with gelcoat, a standard for marine construction for its ease of use in the construction process. The gelcoat is sprayed in the mold prior to the fibreglass, and adheres to the exterior fibres in the process. If there is an unfortunate

side to composite kayaks it is that the gelcoat is easily scratched and abraded, and so it is not uncommon for hull bottoms to wear down to bare fibreglass through typical use. Fibreglass, while tough, also has a breaking point and so for rough water around rocks poly boats are the most popular for their durability.

Regardless, fibreglass kayaks remain the most prized of kayaks with Kevlar and carbon upping the appeal and the price for the lighter weight. Because of the labour-intensive construction process, it’s not uncommon for top-end kayaks to run upwards of $5,000.

The Kap Farvel was designed in response to requests from experienced paddlers who wanted a rudder-less kayak in the Greenland style, but reflecting Steve Schleicher’s ideas on design, comfort and performance. It was conceived as a day paddling boat with the capac-ity to be used on day-weekend trips. The design is quite stable in spite of its narrow hull because the thin ends and rocker increase the draft and effectively lower the paddler’s centre of gravity.

Performance-wise, due its narrower hull, it tracks slightly better than its larger cousins and may be just slightly faster. It is an ideal tripping kayak for all but the fairly large paddlers who will find the Telkwa or Telkwa HV a better fit.

The Telkwa HV is our largest single and can carry an impressive load. The hull is almost identical to the Telkwa but the deck is 1” deeper in the cockpit area. This extra height in the middle of the boat tapers to the same size as the Telkwa at the ends. It handles very much like the Telkwa but with slightly more windage and is able to hold more gear. The Telkwa HV is the ideal boat for larger paddlers or those who like lots of space in the cockpit.

This compact tandem kayak has a shallow arch hull with a fairly hard chine resulting in a very stable kayak. The kayak, even with its modest rocker, is quite manoeu-vrable as the shallow arch provides enough flotation to make the small amount of rocker very effective. Desolation Sound is the name given to the small body

of water south of West Redonda Island, bordered by

Mary Point, Sarah Point, Junction Point, Horace Head

and Otter Island, though the name is often meant to

include the adjacent Discovery Islands, the unoffi cial

name for the archipelago that includes Quadra, Cortes

and the Redonda islands and those as far west as

Hardwicke Island. Desolation was named by Capt. George

Vancouver, who wrote in June 1792: ‘Our residence here

was truly forlorn; an awful silence pervaded the gloomy

forests, whilst animated nature seemed to have deserted

the neighbouring country...”

Desolation Sound and the Discovery Islands are the

traditional lands of the Klahoose, Homalco, Sliammon and

Laich-Kwil-Tach/Tlowitis First Nations. Communities once

dotted the region, with modern First Nations communities

now centered at Sliammon at Powell River, Cape Mudge on

Quadra Island and Squirrel Cove on Cortes Island. Reserves

are marked on the map in pink along with the name of the

associated First Nation; traditional place names (if known)

are in italics. Reserves should be treated as private property.

Other traditional-use sites, sacred sites and burial grounds

dot the area and visitors should be aware to minimize impact

on traditional or cultural land.

Desolation Sound Marine Provincial Park, Copeland

Islands Marine Provincial Park, Malaspina Marine

Provincial Park and Okeover Arm Provincial Park

are linked as a BC Parks management unit. In 2013

designated camping locations were created with sets of

tent pads to replace the previous camp-where-you-can

system, in part to protect culturally sensitive locations

such as middens. Tent pad clusters at each site are set

near a scenic common area with a bench and table. Other

informal camping locations are now closed, while sites

outside the park are not affected. A backcountry camping

fee applies for the marine park campsites.

A group of volunteers is working to create a marine trail

through British Columbia by establishing a network of

campsites, launch sites and all-weather havens. When this

trail is complete it will link waterways from Washington to

Alaska and all coastal points between through a network

of campsites every 16 kilometres or less. The fi rst two

sections of the trail cover the Gulf Islands off southeast

Vancouver Island and northwest Vancouver Island from

Port Hardy to Tofi no. Desolation Sound’s section is nearing

completion, and so when formalized should vastly increase

the number of formal sites through the Discovery Islands.

Visit www.bcmarinetrails.org.

This region is famous for its strong tidal fl ows. Rapids in

restricted channels creating dangerous rips, whirlpools

and overfalls. Seymour Narrows lies in the south end of

Discovery Passage in the main shipping route through

this region, with strong currents and rips throughout the

vicinity. Surge Narrows is on the east side of Quadra Island,

growing in fame for the surf waves ideal for whitewater

kayaking. More rapids lie upstream in Okisollo Channel and

another three in close proximity between Calm and Cordero

channels – Dent Rapids, Gillard Passage and Yaculta

Rapids. Overfalls of up to several metres occur nearby at

Arran Rapids. All can be dangerous at peak times.

Outside the provincial parks, camping is unregulated

wilderness camping. Because of the casual nature, the sites

indicated on this mapsheet run a spectrum from established

campsites to just small spots for a tent. Some sites,

particularly near Desolation Sound, are well established

and offer good beach access and cleared, level areas often

suitable for large groups. Many of the more remote locations

are not established and so have poorer access and may

be suitable for single tents only. Beaches are generally

poor throughout the region so landings may involve rocks.

Consult guide books such as The BC Coast Explorer series

for details on the various camping options.

The marine information is provided for trip planning only

and not meant for navigation. Locations of hazards are

generalized and proper Hydrographic Service marine charts

must be consulted when navigating this region. Logging

roads as indicated do not imply passage is possible.

Information conveyed in these maps was made possible

with the assistance of BC Parks, the Canadian Hydrographic

Service and GeoBase. Additional information from Sailing

Directions, British Columbia Coast (South Portion), Canadian

Hydrographic Service, 2004.

by graham ketcheson Blade shapes vary from the wide-bladed ‘power’ paddles

derived from white water, to the thin-bladed Greenland paddles, and are made from a range of materials from wood to graphite. Photo by Laurie MacBride

“How long should my paddle be?”It’s a question I hear a lot when teaching basic kayaking. “Don’t

worry too much about that now,” I respond. “Choose one you think is right. We’ll go have some fun on the water first and learn more about paddles later...”

At first, learning to make your kayak steer, moving where you want, launching and landing are much more important than choosing the perfect paddle. Once you’ve kayaked, perhaps even tried some different types of paddles, you’ll be ready to make an educated choice.

Paddles are a personal preference. There is no right and wrong when choosing. Lots of opinions, theories, and formulas exist, but when it comes down to it, choose one that feels right. Is your paddle too heavy? Is it awkwardly long? Are you working too hard pulling water? Well you probably haven’t found the right paddle yet.

In an ideal world, each kayaker would use a different paddle for each boat that they paddled. I base the overall length of a paddle on what boat I’m going to be paddling. Other features like blade

size and materials are a matter of personal choice and paddling style. The average length of a touring paddle is between 220 cm and 230 cm, although there is now a trend toward shorter and lighter paddles.

Factors in Choosing a Paddle• Width of the boat• Your height when seated in boat• Cadence (how many strokes you take in a minute)• Blade width and length• Materials & Budget• Width of BoatSo it’s your turn in the Queen Mary tandem kayak? Grab a

longer paddle, say a 230 to 240 cm. You’ll need the length to reach the water across the wide deck. If you are paddling a sleeker single kayak, try a 210 to 220 cm paddle.

Height in BoatAre you tall in the torso and long in the arms? Try a slightly

shorter paddle because you can reach further, even across a wide and deep double kayak. Conversely, put a shorter torso person in the same boat and they will need a longer paddle to have a hope of reaching the water.

CadenceA paddler with a high cadence, taking shorter strokes but

more of them, is very efficient. A shorter paddle is best for this paddling style, say 210 to 220 cm. A longer shaft paddle is suited

Which paddle is

for you?

right

Paddles: How to buy

Page 75: 2014 Kayak Gear Guide

2014 KayaK Gear Guide 75

to a lower cadence style.Blade WidthA wide blade pulls more water with each stroke and is good

for working out, speed, and aggressive paddling. White water blades are often designed wider, to pull you quickly around river obstacles or shoot you powerfully over waterfalls. Sea kayak blades are typically narrower, allowing a kayaker to paddle longer distances without tiring. Sea kayakers can increase their cadence but expend less energy because they are pulling less water with each stroke.

Try different blade widths. Most manufacturers have several blade styles to choose from. Test out really narrow blades like a quill or Greenland style paddle, too. Consider the length of blade as well. Differing blade lengths increase or decrease your working shaft length. Touring paddles are generally asymmetrical. The top and bottom half of the blade are unequal. This reduces torque and allows the blade to exit and enter the water cleanly. But that’s a topic for another time.

Materials & BudgetThere have been lots of innovations in materials and I’m

sure more amazingly lightweight material combinations are yet to come. The reality is that some lightweight paddles are a little

pricey. If you are serious about kayaking, you may go this route. Many moderately weighted and priced paddles are available in fiberglass, plastic, aluminum, or any combination of these. Heavy aluminum shaft and plastic blade paddles are murderous after a day’s paddle. If you can afford it, go for something a notch or two up from these. Expect to pay between $100 to $200 for a good paddle.

And finally, a word on design. Bent vs straight shaft paddle? Start out with a straight shaft. There is plenty of time to experiment with bent shafts later as you improve your skills. Bent shaft paddles were originally designed for racing. More recreational paddlers are using them today.

For strength, a one piece paddle is best, although two pieces are easier to store and transport. Buy the lightest paddle you can afford. Your arms and shoulders will thank you for the weight and the variety (since you can feather or off-set the blade). Buy a recognized brand name from a reputable paddle shop. Hopefully you can test out the paddles before you buy. Ask what they recommend. What brand and style do they use for rentals? Can you return the paddle if it’s not the right length?

PFDs: How to choose

Aside from your kayak and paddle, your PFD (Personal Flotation Device) is your most vital piece of equipment. A Coast Guard approved PFD is part of the required items for legal operation of your kayak.

But according to Mercia Sixta, the ‘doyenne’ of sea kayaking in British Columbia, PFDs have to fit well or they’re really not going to do the job.

“Sizing is crucial”, she says. “Most people buy one which looks good and fits fine in the store, but PFDs aren’t for making a fashion statement - they’re a matter of survival.

“Most people buy one which is too big with the result that, once in the water, it rises up and can be hazardous. Be sure to test the PFD carefully in the store. Your body shouldn’t rotate inside the jacket.

“Cinch it up and have someone get behind you and try to pull the jacket up. If it comes up to your chin or higher, it will become a problem in the water. Get a smaller, tighter fit.

“And be careful with the new combination sizing, such as ‘small/medium’ or ‘medium/ large’. This may well lead you to buy one too big for yourself.

“As for zippers, side zippers can be hard to operate, especially for busty women. A center zipper is the easiest to use.

“You should also have two or three adjustable side straps, plus a buckle, and straps over the shoulders to adjust the fit.

“Some PFDs have rigid panels that your arms may rub against as you paddle, whereas others have flotation which wraps around the body and are more comfortable to wear.

“ Mercia’s big concern is with the new style cut-away PFDs. “They’re great for paddling, but if you jump-test them by leaping into the water with your arms up, you’ll discover that most of them come off!”

She and some paddler friends havestarted jump-testing PFDs

to see which ones work, and to her surprise, of 20 they have tested, only two stayed on (and one of these was unapproved ).

“This test proved especially problematic with bustier women and bigger guys”, she says.

“The surest way to secure a PFD is with a crotch strap”, she says, but any modification of a PFD nullifies the Coast Guard approval, so it’s a dilemma. “At the end of the day,” she says, “I’d rather be sure my PFD was going to stay on, come what may.”

Another problem with the latest designs comes in self-rescuing. “Busty women in bulky PFDs are having trouble getting close enough to their kayaks to perform a successful self rescue”, she says. As PFDs have become shorter (so they don’t rise up on your sprayskirt when you’re seated in your kayak), many have become bulkier in front to accommodate the required flotation.

She recommends purchasers take plenty of time trying on PFDs in the store, and be sure to conduct trials in the water, including the jump test, a swim test, a float test, and a self-rescue test.

If you’ve already got a PFD you like, check it each year to make sure it hasn’t degraded, that its buckles and straps aren’t broken, and do a float check to see it’s still working as it should. If there’s a problem, get rid of it.

Mercia uses an inflatable which she inflates with a CO2 cartridge upon capsize, but she stresses you need to be a good swimmer if you have one of these as it won’t be inflated till after you’re in the water. “Not only do you need to pull your sprayskirt grab loop to exit your boat, and keep hold of your kayak and paddle so you can perform your selfrescue, but you also have to pull the inflater cord on your inflatable. It’s a lot to remember.”

And she points out that once an inflatable has been inflated, it’s no longer ‘approved’ till the CO2 cartridge is replaced (beware that different manufacturers’ cartridges aren’t interchangeable).

PFDs: How to choose

PFDs

Which PDF is

for you?

rightShe also notes that inflatables are very bulky when inflated, and they tend to float you on your back.

The belt-type inflatables require a 2-step process so they’re even less safe. And none of the inflatables give you any extra warmth the way a regular PFD does, until inflated.

If you’re a visitor from another country, be sure your PFD is approved in your home country, in which case it will be accepted in the jurisdiction you’re visiting. Otherwise you could end up with a fine. If you’re a Canadian and you buy a US-approved PFD, you’ll still have to have one that’s Canadian-approved along with you to be legal in Canada.

As for colour, red, orange or yellow are the most visible. “Visibility is important,” she says, “especially if you’ve got a darker coloured kayak.”

Whatever type of PFD you get, Mercia says, make sure you practice your basic skills with it in the water so you’re prepared for any eventuality.
