ParkingFor peace of mind, safely leave your car in a public parking

lot for just $3 for the whole day. From the roundabout, you’ll be on Morris Street. Turn right

on Second Street and go two blocks to the Port of Skagit lot, where there is also RV parking available.

Or, turn left on Second Street and follow it over the hill to the town parking lot.

RestroomsFind three full-service public restrooms. There is one on the

waterfront across First Street from the Port of Skagit parking. There is another on Morris Street at Third. And there is one right downtown in the middle of South First Street. For emergencies, is a portable privy in the town parking lot.

Welcometo la conner!

As mayor of the Town ofLa Conner it is my pleasure to welcome you to our community.

Located on the delta near the mouth of the Skagit River, La Conner is a premier Northwest destination providing the best that Washington has to offer with luxury

accommodations, unique shopping and dining experiences, boating, hiking, biking and much, much more.

2013 proved to be an exciting year for our town with the implementation of phase one of our new seaside boardwalk. 2014 should be equally, if not even more of a thrill with completion of this project slated for the end of the year.

Be sure to take advantage of this wonderful new feature which I guarantee will add to the quality of your stay.

We invite you to come, stroll through our community, meet our citizens and find out why La Conner is one of the foremost places on the west coast to live as well as to visit.

We look forward to meeting you,Ramon Hayes, Mayor

Historic la conner: a must-see stop

First Street before 1890.

La Conner is a 19th Century waterfront town on the bank of

the Swinomish Channel and is Skagit County’s oldest community. Home to the Coast Salish people from time immemorial, the first non-native settlers arrived here in 1860.

Originally called Swinomish, the area encompassing the town was deeded in 1869 to John Conner, who in 1870 changed the town’s name to La Conner to honor his wife, Louisa Ann Conner.

Today the Swinomish Tribal Community is on Fidalgo Island across Swinomish Channel, and La Conner is on the mainland. The two waterfront communities are connected by the iconic Rainbow Bridge.

In the 1800s, the most popular mode of travel in the region was by canoe as the Skagit River delta was a marshland. These days most visitors come here by automobile or bus, though the saltwater channel is very popular with boaters for calm inside waters between Skagit and Padilla bays.

In the last two years, the town has developed a waterfront boardwalk

to be finished in 2014, so visitors and residents can stroll from one end of La Conner to the other, past historic buildings that have changed very little in the last 100 years. Visitors can enjoy waterfront dining and browse through wonderfully unique shops.

At the turn of the 20th Century, the town had a population of about 1,000 residents and farming, fishing and logging were its main industries. Today

farming and fishing continue to be important on both sides of the channel, though La Conner is also known for it’s population of artists and writers.

Many of the unique shops and galleries on First Street showcase the art produced here.

The town’s unspoiled 1800s architecture, the acres of tulips that bloom every spring, nearby farms and dairies and the scenic working waterfront with tugs pulling log barges and traditional Coast Salish canoes have made La Conner your must-see destination.

sWinomisH indian tribal community

La Conner’s first residents were the Coast Salish people who occupied this region for thousands of years. Today, 900 of their descendants make their homes on the Swinomish Reservation directly across the channel from town.

Since the arrival of the first non-Native settlers in the 1860s, Swinomish and the town have been closely linked and the Rainbow Bridge south of town physically connects the two communities. The Swinomish Indian Tribal Community is an integral part of La Conner both culturally and in providing many programs that help local residents and children.

The three pavilions in the tribe’s beautiful Swadabs Park, on the waterfront west of La Conner, were constructed in 2011 to resemble the traditional cedar hats worn by the indigenous people of the Northwest; interpretive panels there line a walking path and tell more of the Swinomish story.

Swinomish operates several businesses, including the Swinomish Casino and Resort.

A mini-store at the Village Chevron Station carries Native Catch brand locally caught salmon, processed right here at the Swinomish Fish Company.

Last year Swinomish Tribal Chairman Brian Cladoosby put La Conner in the national spotlight when he was elected to serve as the 21st President of the National Congress of American Indians – one of the most influential political groups in the United States.

Town attractions:Playground for tots: Let the kids run off some of their

energy at the playground near the town parking lot on South Third. Nearby is the Magnus Anderson log cabin, which kids love to explore.

Skate Park: One of the Western Washington’s best venue for older kids and “skaters” is the town’s Skateboard Park at the north end of 6th Street.

Also it contains well-maintained hiking trails offering spectacular water and mountain views. At the west side of the park, behind the bandstand there are stairs leading to a new, grassy, waterfront park the town is developing.

Or take a drive:Birds: Go out

to Fir Island towardConway just about anytime between November and April and see flocks of Snow Geese, Tundra Swans and Trumpeter Swans that come here to winter.

See shore birds year-round at the Padilla Bay Reserve; to get there go north on La Conner Whitney Road straight across Highway 20 and follow Edison Bayview Road to the reserve.

WHile you’re in tHe neigHborHood ...

Be sure and look up, bald eagles perch on pier pilings and in trees throughout the region.

Tulips and Daffodils: All month long in April tulip fields are in bloom. Pick up a tulip map at a Rotary Club tulip booth or at the Chamber of Commerce office on Morris Street.

Deception Pass: Drive out to Highway 20 and go west and follow the sign to Oak Harbor. The Deception Pass bridge offers breathtaking views you won’t want to miss. Enjoy the beaches at the state parks just past the bridge.

Tommy Thompson Trail: Find a trailhead off Highway 20, toward Anacortes, at the Fidalgo Bay Resort RV Park.

The 3-mile hike includes a stretch across an old railroad trestle that spans Fidlago Bay.

Farms: Hedlin Family Farm with fresh organic produce is at the entrance to La Conner. Drive through the valley and see organic dairies, shellfish farms, orchards and more.
