A MessAge froM the President…Welcome to Lakeland Community College, the first college in Ohio founded by a vote of the people. As a college, we take great pride in providing students with the education and training needed to earn a degree, start a career, upgrade job skills or complete the first two years of college education. In addition, it is essential for the college to provide students with opportunities to enhance their college experiences through participation in athletics or on-campus student organizations.

When it comes to athletics, Lakeland has an outstanding history of its teams and players performing at the highest level. Our coaches are top-notch and our student-athletes always strive for excellence on the field, on the court, and especially in the classroom.

Whether you are a participant or a spectator, thank you for supporting Lakeland’s intercollegiate athletic programs. Sit back and enjoy another exciting, fast-paced season!

sCott BArLoW, Director for Athletics

“Academic success for every student-athlete is the ultimate goal of the athletic department at Lakeland Community College,” says athletic director Scott Barlow. “We believe that success in athletics can support success in the classroom and, ultimately, a successful life.”

“At Lakeland, our athletic programs are designed to enhance an athlete’s academic experience by helping our students develop the critical life skills of time management, self-discipline, the ability to work within a team environment, and recognition of the need for personal improvement.”

Barlow was named Lakeland’s athletic director during the summer of 2000. He brought with him an extensive educational and practical background in teaching, coaching, and administration.

Barlow currently serves as the commissioner of the OCCAC and is the NJCAA Region XII women’s division director. He is also regional representative for the NJCAA Division II volleyball and women’s basketball poll and a member of several NJCAA standing committees including softball, swimming, and diving. He is the national chair of the NJCAA’s Division II women’s basketball committee. Barlow was named OCCAC Athletic Director of the Year in 2002 and was selected as Co-Athletic Director of the Year in 2005.

He received a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education from the State University of New York College at Cortland, where he was a four year varsity baseball player. He has two master’s degrees; one in physical education and health from Radford University and another in administrative supervision from the State University of New York – Plattsburgh. A native of upstate New York, Barlow currently resides in Painesville Township with his wife, Jennifer, and three school age children who are active in a variety of sports.

52014 MEDIA GUIDE

coAchInG stAFFDjuro Peric enters his 27th season as head coach of the Lakeland Community College men’s soccer program in 2014. Peric, the longest tenured head coach in the history of Lakeland Community College athletics and just the second head coach of the men’s soccer program, is currently seventh in the nation in wins among active coaches. Over the past 25 years, Peric has guided the Lakers to seven Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) championships and been named OCCAC Coach of the Year six times. Seven of his players have earned All-America honors from the NJCAA while six others were selected by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).

No stranger to Lakeland athletics, his time in Kirtland began in 1972 as a member of the men’s soccer team. He earned team and conference Most Valuable Player honors as a freshman and was voted as the team’s best forward one year later. In his two years as a Laker, he was unanimously voted team captain by his teammates while leading the team in scoring both years. At that time, he was ranked sixth on the all-time scoring list. Peric was selected as the Best Forward at the inaugural Lakeland Invitational in 1972 after amassing nine points on three goals and three assists in two games. That record stood for four years until All-American George Attoh broke it in 1976.

At the conclusion of his playing career, Peric transitioned into coaching. He served as an assistant under Mario Marcopoli before taking the reigns as the head coach in 1988. Since then, the Lakers have posted a 251-202-30 record. He attributes much of his success to Coach Marcopoli. “Everything I did and everything I made, including graduating from Lakeland, I owe to Mr. Marcopoli,” said Peric, “He was truly the best mentor I could have had.”

In addition to countless all-conference and all-region selections, Peric has coached 17 academic All-Americans at LCC. He currently holds a USSF “B” license and is a member of the NSCAA. He is also involved in the Croatian Community, most notably, the Croatian School for Language and Culture where he served as President for more than a decade. He has three daughters, Georgian, Tina, and Annie, with his late wife Angela. Tina and Annie were Lakeland graduates in 2001 and 2002, respectively.
