1859: Founding of the Theological Seminary of the Dutch

Reformed Church

1866: Founding of the Stellenbosch Gymnasium, inspired by

the Theological Seminary

1881: The Arts Department of the Stellenbosch Gymnasium

developed into the Stellenbosch College

1887: Stellenbosch College renamed The Victoria College of

Stellenbosch

1915: Bequest by Mr Jannie Marais to establish an

independent Afrikaans university

1918: The Victoria College gave way to an independent

Stellenbosch University
