Since 1893, the Municipal Art Society has made New York a more livable city

by advocating for excellence in urban planning and design, a commitment to

historic preservation and the arts, and the empowerment of local

communities to affect change in their neighborhoods.

For more than 120 years, MAS has championed the economic vitality, cultural

vibrancy, environmental sustainability and social diversity of New York,

leading some of the city’s most influential campaigns to protect its diverse

assets and encourage visionary plans for its future.

the Jacqueline Kennedy onassis Medal

The Municipal Art Society’s highest honor is presented annually to individuals

and institutions whose work or deeds have made outstanding contributions to

the quality of life in New York City.

In 1975, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis brought to MAS her commitment to New

York’s great architecture and urban spaces and sparked a collaboration for

which New Yorkers have been grateful ever since—the winning fight to save

Grand Central Terminal.

MAS is the only organization to award a medal in Mrs. Onassis’ honor, named

for her in 1994 to recognize her tireless efforts to champion and preserve New

York’s great treasures.

Forest City Ratner Companies is one of the most prolific ground-up development companies in New York City and has played a major role in Brooklyn’s dramatic renaissance. In its 28 years, FCRC has developed 44 office, retail, residential, hotel and sports and entertainment projects, totaling some 16.7 million square feet, in all five boroughs and throughout the metropolitan area.

FCRC has committed itself to innovative, place-building projects that open new markets for tenants, provide services for communities, and generate thousands of new jobs. Whether creating a new office market in downtown Brooklyn, identifying an unmet demand for large format retail in the boroughs, or relocating the Nets to unlock the development potential for an entire neighborhood, FCRC’s pioneering developments have played a vital role in building New York City over the past three decades. In addition to enhancing the skyline, these projects bring significant citywide and community benefits, including job creation and retention; programs to encourage the hiring of minorities, women and local residents; generation of new tax revenues and affordable housing; and high quality construction by union labor.
