Welcome to the 15th edition of the Morinville Program Guide. As part of Town Council’s commitment to serving and informing the public, this guide is published three times a year: Spring/Summer (April-August), Fall (September-December), and Winter (January-March). This publication is a comprehensive guide offering many diverse programs and services from Community Services and local organizations. The Program Guide is an invaluable resource for everyone in Morinville and the surrounding region, so be sure to take a few minutes to read through it.

Growing together and enhancing the quality of life in our community is important. We encourage all of you to try something new by participating in our health and wellness classes, recreation programs, sport development, self-improvement classes, arts and culture workshops and community festivals being offered in the coming months. There is something available for every age — preschool, youth, adult and senior — so be sure to find what is right for you! For an up to date listing of “What’s Happening” in our town, please visit our website at www.morinville.ca.

Thank you to all the generous groups and businesses that support the development of the Program Guide, and the programs and services contained within. Your support is truly appreciated by all those who benefit from community programs and services. Sincerely,

Mayor Lisa Holmes

Fire Safety Tips

For further informati on on fi re safety, call780-939-6154

FIRE ESCAPE PLANNINGA fi re can spread rapidly through your home. A small fi re can erupt into a “fl ashover” (when a room gets so hot, everything suddenly bursts into fl ames), within as litt le as three minutes. Seconds count in a fi re emergency and an advanced warning from smoke alarms and an eff ecti ve home fi re escape plan could save your life: » Have at least one smoke alarm on every level of your home and

test the alarms monthly. For best protecti on, use interconnected alarms so when one sounds, they all sound.

» Identi fy two exits from which to escape, from each room (especially bedrooms).

» Draw a simple fl oor plan of your home, marking exactly how to get our in a fi re and practi ce your escape plan at least twice a year with everyone living in your home.

» If bedroom windows are high above the ground, consider getti ng fi re ladders and practi ce how to use them.

» Assign a designated helper for any person living in your home who may require assistance in escaping the fi re emergency (young children, people with impairments, older people) & teach children how to escape on their own.

»Knowing what to do in the event of a fi re is parti cularly important for older adults and there are things to consider for the elderly living alone in their home: » Consider sleeping in a room on the ground fl oor to make escaping

easier. » Make sure smoke alarms are installed near any sleeping area and

consider installing smoke alarms that use a fl ashing light, vibrati on and/or higher decibel sound to alert you in a fi re emergency. Choose smoke alarms equipped with large test butt ons, or ones that can be tested using a fl ashlight or television remote.

» Make sure you are able to open up all doors and windows in your home.

» Keep a telephone and emergency phone numbers near your bed, as well as other necessary items such as medicati ons, glasses, wheel chair, walker or cane, fl ashlight & whistle.

FIRE PITSFire pits need to be handled with cauti on, especially since they are oft en used in social setti ngs where it is easy to neglect taking care of the fl ames.

» Keep the fi re pit at least 10 feet from any structure or fl ammable items.

» Place the unit on a solid surface, in an open area, away from overhanging trees or roofl ines.

» Never start or re-start your fi re with gas or other fl ammable liquids.

» Burn only clean fuel such as dry, untreated wood and keep the fl ame below the mesh screen.

» Never leave the fi re pit unatt ended. » ALWAYS ensure small children are closely supervised

around any acti ve campfi re, fi re pit or BBQ. » Keep a fi re exti nguisher close at hand and ensure any

embers are completely exti nguished before going inside.
