A s the links lay covered in snow, the men’s golf team fo-cuses on preparing for spring competition. The Scarlet Knights hope to capitalize on their success in the fall

season, having notched two strong tournament wins at the Hartford Invitational and the Lehigh Invitational.

“After our workouts in the fall, after our wins, it confirms all the messages that we have been trying to preach. In terms of bal-ancing golf and academics, it shows that we can do well in the classroom and win tournaments,” third-year Head Coach Rob Shutte explained.

Rutgers will focus on maintaining that balance as the team en-ters its last season in the American Athletic Conference (AAC), before heading to the Big Ten Conference. Rutgers final stand in the AAC will be an excellent test of the team’s strength mov-ing forward.

“Our conference that we have this year, the AAC, is as strong as any conference in the country, including the Big Ten. We have six teams that rank in the top 30 of the country. Everything we are doing is against the same opponent skill level and ranking now as well as in the Big Ten,” said Coach Shutte.

The Scarlet Knights will be led by seniors Jonathan Renza (Cor-tlandt Manor, N.Y.) and Doug Walters (Blairstown, N.J.). The experience between these players will be an advantage in the challenging tournaments the team is set to face.

“By their senior years, [Renza and Walters] have played in a lot of tournaments. Even though the program experience is differ-ent from when they started, they have a lot of playing experi-ence as well. We are going to continue to rely on them,” Coach Shutte said.

The two have been led by three different coaches over their time “on the banks,” but have remained solid in competition. In the fall, Walters notched two top-10 finishes, while Renza took three top-11 finishes of his own. Walters and Renza placed first and second respectively in the Scarlet Knights win at the Le-high Invitational.

Classmate Dillon Corbo (Montville, N.J.) adds additional sup-port to the group. The senior has competed in many events throughout his time at Rutgers.

Junior Jacob Stockl (Clark, N.J.) has also proven to be a strong asset to the team, earning a first place finish at the Rutgers Invitational. Competing in four out of five tournaments in the fall, Stockl will remain a player to rely on.

As for the sophomore class, Jonathan Chang (Valencia, Calif.) remains a strong factor in competition. Chang has earned four top-20 finishes on the season, including tied for 14th to pace the team at the Badger Invitational.

The three freshmen have each competed in various tourna-ments this past fall. Rutgers will continue to see what is in store for the young members.

The depth in the roster is a powerful advantage, showing the team can turn to any member at any point in the season. Senior captain Jonathan Renza has certainly noticed the strength and talent of the group this year.

“Being here for the fourth year, our team has come a long way. It is a lot harder to crack the line up now than it was three years ago. We have ten guys on the team and every week we are com-peting,” Renza said.

With the progression Rutgers has seen, the season ahead is a battle the group is eager to face. Every player is in a spot to come out on top, which is an important goal in leading the team to success.

“Personally and for the team, I would like to be in contention for every tournament. I would like to say I want to win every tournament, but I [at least] want someone on our team to win because that correlates to the team winning,” Renza explained.

“As long as one person on our team is in contention, we should be close to the top of the leader board. Down the road, hope-fully, we can get to Regionals either by winning our Conference or getting an out large bid.”

While winning is always a goal, a common theme on the season is to stay a top the leader board in each contest. If the team can remain contenders, they will have won half the battle. Rut-gers truly has the mentality to secure a successful season.

“I think the guys have confidence in what I’ve been telling them, which is that they are as good as the other teams there,” says Coach Shutte. “If we just work that extra 10% harder in every-thing, we can continue to win.”

The Scarlet Knights open the season at Cal State Fullerton on Feb. 17-18 in Los Angeles, Calif. The team will next travel to Bluff-ton, S.C. for the Colleton River Intercollegiate, before heading to the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular in Florida. Next up Rut-gers takes on competition at the C&F Bank Intercollegiate in Williamsburg, Va. After the Princeton Invitational in New Jersey, the squad will take the trip to State College, Pa. for the Ruther-ford Intercollegiate. The spring campaign concludes at the AAC Championship on Apr. 27-29.

ROB SHUTTE is in his third season as head men’s golf coach at Rut-gers University. He has eight years of collegiate head coaching experi-ence, including two sea-sons as head women’s golf coach at Lehigh Uni-versity. “The mission of the Rut-gers University Depart-

ment of Athletics is perfectly in line with my own core values and beliefs,” said Shutte. “It is a great opportunity for me to pursue a passion of mine, which is developing young men into better players, people and leaders through the game of golf. The BIG EAST is a very competitive conference, and will only improve with the additions of UCF, SMU, Houston and Mem-phis. If you want to be the best, you need to be able to com-pete against the best.”

With the Mountain Hawks, Shutte directed the team to its first-ever tournament victory at the 2011 Sunshine Spring Invitation-al. In the classroom, his squad maintained a 3.25 cumulative grade point average during his tenure.

Prior to his arrival in Lehigh, Shutte served as head men’s golf coach at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pa. from 2005 to 2009. The Mules had three tournament victories and were run-ner up on four occasions during his tenure. In addition to a trio of individual tourney titles, Zach Oyer graduated with the lowest career stroke average in over 15 years. His 2006 squad boasted a 3.23 grade point average, highest among men’s athletic pro-grams.

A PGA Class “A” member, Shutte has strong ties to the metro-politan region. He served as Assistant Golf Professional at Ar-cola Country Club in Paramus, N.J. in 2003 after working as a Program Administrator and Teaching Golf Professional at First Tee of Metropolitan New York in the Bronx in 2002.

Off the course, Shutte has balanced his career by serving as Vice President of Independent Financial Advisors in Easton, Pa. since 2004. He has also hosted two radio shows on the ESPN Radio affiliate in Allentown, The Water Cooler Radio Show and The Caddie Shack Radio Program. In the winter, he has vol-unteered as assistant varsity boys’ basketball at Notre Dame-Green Pond High School.

Shutte (pronounced SHOOT-e) earned a bachelor’s degree in parks and recreation management from Penn State Univer-sity in 2003. During his time in University Park, he received both the Disney World and Augie Boyd Golf Scholarships.

Shutte, who hails from a Rutgers family, and his wife Caitlin are the proud parents of two sons, Charlie (Nov. 1, 2011) and Henry (July 3, 2013). His father, Bob, was a three-year varsity football letterwinner at Rutgers from 1969-71, playing defensive back, wide receiver and kicker. He was also a three-year letterwinner on the baseball diamond, playing third base and shortstop from 1970-72. His mother, Catherine, is a Rutgers graduate and was a student sportswriter with the Daily Targum as an undergrad.

An accounting profes-sional, Oyer has worked

at Deloitte & Touche in Parsippany , N.J. since September 2011.

On the links, Oyer worked as a youth golf instructor and men-tor at Fairmont Country Club from 2006 to 2011. In the role, he helped to educate children on the rules, etiquette, and particu-lars of the game. He also served as a driving range manager at Canoe Brook Country Club in the summer of 2008 after working

as a youth golf instructor and mentor at The First Tee in Newark, N.J. in the summer of 2007. At First Tee, he counseled and men-tored underprivileged children while teaching them core life val-ues such as perseverance, honesty, and integrity.

Oyer was a four-year letterwinner at Muhlenberg College, where he earned a degree in accounting in 2011. As a senior, he led the team in average, which was the lowest in more than 15 years. He finished in the top five seven times during the 2010-11 season, including four top-three finishes. He earned medalist honors at the Messiah Falcon Classic, lifting the Mules to a first-place fin-ish.

Oyer is one of only five Mule players to earn multiple all-confer-ence honors, and his career stroke average is the lowest in the program’s history.

RUTGERS MEN’S GOLF HISTORYThe Rutgers men’s golf team has competed in the prestigious BIG EAST Conference since 1995. In 2004, the men’s team was victorious in four fall events and competed in the NCAA Cham-pionships in the spring of 2005, marking the first time since 1984 the Scarlet Knights advanced to the NCAA’s. Following the historic 2004-05 season, Rutgers head coach Maura Bal-lard was named the 2005 BIG EAST Men’s Golf Coach of the Year. “I am flattered to have received this honor,” said Waters at the time. “This is the most talented team I’ve had and it has been a very exciting year. This group has worked extremely hard and I am very proud of them.” The Rutgers men’s golf program has produced a number of top players in its long and proud his-tory. Current professionals who starred at Rutgers include Bill King (Spring Lake Golf Club), Frank Esposito (Brooklake Country Club), Mark Giuliano (Fairmount Country Club), Jim Mrva (Mon-roe Golf Club, Rochester, NY), John Fagan (Raritan Valley Country Club), and John Schob (Huntington Crescent Club, Huntington, NY). Rutgers has also produced its share of top amateur play-ers, including Bob Marzoli, the 1971 MGA champion, two-time All-American James Guerra, Barry Wiseman, Bruce Young, Ryan MacDonald and Brent Pittman, to name a few. Two men who played a central role in the evolution and history of Rutgers Golf are former long-time head coach Fred Gruninger and former head professional Art DeBlasio. Gruninger, who later went on to serve a long tenure as RU’s athletic director, was a highly-suc-cessful head coach at Rutgers, leading the Scarlet Knights to a 109-30-2 record between 1963 and 1972. Art DeBlasio, the Rut-gers head pro from 1966-2001, assisted with both the men’s and women’s teams during his 35 years “On the Banks.”

RUTGERS UNIVERSITY GOLF COURSEThe Rutgers University Golf Course was founded in 1961 with the construction of the present day 18-hole layout that was ex-pertly designed by Hal Purdy, a noted golf architect. The course was officially opened May 29, 1963. Today, the par-71 Rutgers Golf Course (par-72 for women) can be stretched to 6,337 yards and features a course rating of 70.5 and a slope of 130. Over the past decade, the Rutgers Golf Course has undergone exten-sive renovations and updates, which include a modern irriga-tion system, the addition of several bunkers and the planting of many trees, including a host of impressive evergreens. Once a rather wide-open tract, today’s Rutgers Golf Course features a host of tree-lined holes, featuring undulating greens and water that comes into play on five holes. A round of golf at the Rut-

gers Golf Course offers a panoramic view of a plethora of aca-demic buildings, including the world famous Waksman Institute of Microbiology, a stately structure that rests to the left of the first fairway. Every golfer who enjoys the Rutgers Golf Course can also gaze at several athletic-related complexes. To the left of the fifth and sixth hole offers a view of the Indoor Bubble, in which the Rutgers football team trains during inclement weath-er. Rising majestically to the left of the sixth green is Rutgers Stadium, the home of the Scarlet Knight football team. The Rutgers Golf Course features a newly-expanded driving range, and a 12,000 square foot short game practice facility and put-ting green.

Jill Jerauld, a former Futures Tour and European Tour player, joined the Rutgers University Golf Course as the Course Pro/Manager in November 2001. She is the only female Profes-sional Golf Association (PGA) - certified head pro in the state of New Jersey. For 10 years prior to joining Rutgers University Golf Course, she was the head pro at Blueberry Hill Golf Course in Russell, PA. Since Jerauld took over management of the Rut-gers University Golf Course, she has successfully implemented a pace-of-play system that has decreased the time of an aver-age round of golf by as much as one hour. DID YOU KNOW? Every hole at the Rutgers Golf Course is named for a tree that can be found on the course and that the par-3 11th hole, named Sour Gum, is home to the oldest Japa-nese sour gum tree in the state.

ROBERT L. BARCHI is the 20th president of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.

Since beginning his tenure on September 1, 2012, President Barchi has been overseeing prepara-tions for integrating into Rutgers most units of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, as outlined in the recently adopted New Jersey Medical and Health Sciences Education Restructuring Act. He has begun work on a university strategic plan (the first in more than 15 years) and was part of a statewide coalition of university, business, and labor leaders urging voter support of a $750 million bond act for higher education construction, which was approved by a wide margin in November. President Barchi announced on November 20, 2012 that all inter-collegiate athletic teams on Rutgers’ New Brunswick campus will join the Big Ten Conference at a date to be determined.

DR. ROBERT L. BARCHIPRESIDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY

From 2004 to 2012, Dr. Barchi served as president of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, nationally regarded as a top university dedicated to health sciences education and research. Prior to Jefferson, he was provost and chief academic officer of the University of Pennsylvania, an Ivy League institution founded in 1740. There, he had responsibility for Penn’s 12 schools, all academic programs, athletics, students, and faculty.

Dr. Barchi was born in Philadelphia but spent his formative years not far from Rutgers in Westfield, N.J. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Georgetown University, and Ph.D. and M.D. degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. He completed specialty training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and holds board certifica-tion in neurology. Throughout his career, Dr. Barchi has been active as a teacher and as an NIH-funded researcher in the fields of neuroscience and neurology, and he has published extensively in his field. He was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences in recognition of his pioneering research on the structure and function of voltage-gated ion channels in nerve and muscle, and on the role these critical molecules can play in human disease. He was also elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians and named a fellow of the American Association for the Advance-ment of Science, the American Neurological Association, and the American Academy of Neurology.

In 1972, Dr. Barchi began his academic ca-reer as a faculty member at Penn. Within a decade, he rose to become the David Ma-honey Professor of Neurological Sciences. Between 1983 and 1996, he served as direc-tor of the Mahoney Institute of Neurological Sciences—an interdisciplinary, university-wide entity that he expanded to become the focus for Penn’s growth in neuroscience, encompassing the intellectual activities of more than 120 faculty members. Dr. Barchi

founded the Department of Neuroscience at Penn and served as its first chair; he also served as chair of the Department of Neurol-ogy. He was named the Fairhill Professor in 2002, a position that he still holds in emeri-tus status.

The University of Pennsylvania named Dr. Barchi as its provost and chief academic officer in 1999, and he served in this capac-ity until 2004. As provost, Dr. Barchi had re-sponsibility for the university’s 12 schools and their academic programs and budgets and Penn’s intercollegiate athletics program, as well as for Penn’s students and faculty. During his tenure, he worked with president Judith Rodin to reassert the primacy of the academic mission in the direction of the uni-versity. He recruited new leadership to nine of the 12 schools at Penn and established a number of universitywide interdisciplinary educational and research institutes. He also led the university through a comprehensive strategic planning process.

As president of Thomas Jefferson University, Dr. Barchi oversaw a period of tremendous growth. The university established three new schools—including the Jefferson School of Pharmacy, which graduated its first class in May 2012, and the Jefferson School of Popu-lation Health, the only school in the nation to offer a master’s degree in chronic care management. Overall student enrollment increased by 51 percent and annual degrees awarded rose by 54 percent. Dr. Barchi also expanded the reach of the campus, inaugu-rating the Partnership in Healthcare Educa-tion, an academic affiliation with the Uni-versity of Delaware that offers dual-degree programs between the two institutions.

Other accomplishments at Jefferson include successful implementation of an ambitious strategic plan that integrated the univer-sity’s clinical, education, and research mis-sions; a comprehensive facilities master plan that supports those missions; and a major fundraising campaign that provides the resources necessary for success. Dur-ing Dr. Barchi’s tenure, Jefferson established 22 new endowed professorships and 50 endowed scholarships, helping to ensure a healthy and diverse community of fac-ulty and students. The university surpassed $300 million in fundraising under his leader-ship, twice the amount raised during the pre-ceding eight-year period.

During his presidency, Dr. Barchi also over-saw the transformation of Jefferson’s urban environment into a vibrant university cam-pus. A coordinated construction program,

coupled with improved landscape design and signage, helped provide visitors and the Jef-ferson community a sense of place and con-nectedness to the compact urban campus in the heart of the city’s historic district.

Dr. Barchi is married to Francis Harper Barchi, a tenure-track faculty member of the Rut-gers School of Social Work. Before coming to Rutgers, she was a senior fellow in the Center for Bioethics at the University of Pennsylva-nia, where she was engaged in education and research activities relating to international research ethics. Francis Barchi holds a Ph.D. in social welfare, a master’s in bioethics, and a master’s in nonprofit leadership from the University of Pennsylvania, as well as a bach-elor’s degree from Smith College. She is the former executive vice president of the Dana Foundation in New York, a post she assumed following a 20-year span as president of her own company, which provided protocol and strategic communication services for inter-national clients. Francis Barchi’s research focuses on the social and behavioral factors that influence women’s health in southern Africa. In 2009, she completed the first ma-jor quantitative study on women’s autonomy and gender-based violence in Botswana, and she is the principal investigator on a study in that country examining the extent to which women’s understanding of HPV and cervi-cal cancer influences their decision-making about prevention and treatment. She is cur-rently part of a team responsible for ethics training of health professionals in Botswana, Tanzania, and Guatemala.

As an avocation, President Barchi is an ex-pert in the history and mechanical develop-ment of clocks and watches. In addition to collecting and conserving examples of these timepieces from the 17th and 18th centuries, he designs and constructs his own precision clocks in his basement machine shop.

The Barchis, who have four adult children and one young dog, spend their leisure time at their home in coastal Maine where they are avid boaters and hikers.

Hermann spent 15 years at Lou-isville as the Cardinals built one of the nation’s most competitive athletic programs across the board. Following a national search, Her-mann was selected from a pool of 63 candidates. She is the first woman to serve in this capacity at Rutgers and will become the second female athletic director in Big Ten history. “It’s a pleasure to welcome Julie Hermann to the Rutgers com-munity,” said President Robert L. Barchi. “She is one of the most respected athletics administra-tors in the country and she was deeply involved in moving Louis-ville from Conference USA to the BIG EAST and from the BIG EAST to the Atlantic Coast Confer-ence. Her 15 years of leadership experience will be an invaluable asset to the university as we prepare to enter the Big Ten.” One of the primary goals set by Hermann is to create a best-in-class student-athlete care sys-tem. She is committed to devel-oping programs to support both

athletic and academic pursuits after building one of the nation’s premier systems for student-athletes at Louisville (L-Care). Hermann served in a supervisory capacity of U of L athletics as the university garnered the 2013 NCAA men’s basketball national championship; two BCS Bowl wins; two NCAA women’s basket-ball national championship ap-pearances (2013 and 2009) and one NCAA men’s soccer College Cup national championship ap-pearance (2010). Since joining the BIG EAST in 2005, the Car-dinals claimed 64 conference titles.

Hermann oversaw 20 sports at Louisville, marketing, academ-ics, sports performance, sports medicine, student development and athletic development. She worked to cultivate support for many of the U of L athletic ven-ues that allowed the Cardinals to enjoy one of the nation’s big-gest and best building booms in college sports. Before joining U of L, Hermann served as an assistant coach for USA Volleyball, helping the national team to a silver medal finish at the World University Games in 1997.

Prior to that she served as head women’s volleyball coach at the University of Tennessee for six seasons. Under her watch, the Lady Vols advanced to the NCAA

Tournament for the first time in a decade. Hermann is immediate past president of the National Asso-ciation of Collegiate Women Ath-letics Administrators. She is the former chair of the NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Committee. Hermann has served on numer-ous boards, including the Frazier Rehab Institute, the Louisville Sports Commission and the Ken-tucky Sports Commission. Hermann and her partner Dr. Les-lie Danehy are the proud parents of a seven year-old son, Aidan.
