Welcome to the 2014 September Yearling Sale

Thoroughbred industry’s most important sale is the source of global success

Keeneland has sold more champions and stakes winners than any other sales company and is recognized as the world’s most prestigious Thoroughbred auction house. Its September Yearling Sale is globally acknowledged as the Thoroughbred yearling auction and is the primary barometer for the health of the horse industry. Clientele from nearly every state and more than 50 countries include the world’s major owners, leading trainers and prominent juvenile sale consignors.

“Without question, the September Sale is where America and the world come to buy graded stakes winners,” said Keeneland Vice President of Sales Walt Robertson. “No other sale comes close to offering the concentration of quality individuals that are found at Keeneland during these two weeks.”

The September Sale has produced the winners of 283 stakes in 2014 as of Sept. 3. These graduates include the winners of 123 graded/group stakes. Standouts include these Grade 1 winners:

Sale covers 13 sessionsThe September Sale was reformatted for 2013 to refl ect three

distinct market segments – week 1, the weekend and week 2 – to better meet the needs of consignors and buyers.

This year, the 71st September Sale will encompass 13 ses-sions vs. 12 sessions in 2013. The 2014 sale is organized as follows:

Page 4: 2014 September Yearling Sale Media Kit

Week 1 (Book 1) – Monday-Thursday, Sept. 8-11; sessions begin at noon ET daily. The premier Book 1 catalog will span the entire opening week with a total of 762 yearlings cata-loged alphabetically by dam over the four-day period.

Keeneland enhances technology service, online tools for sales clients

Keeneland continues to expand its technology service and improve its online sales tools for the convenience of its clients.

Keeneland has hardwired the tack room of each barn in the main stable area to provide consistent Internet access for consignors and buyers. Meanwhile, Keeneland.com hosts user-friendly tools designed to streamline the sales process for clients.

The redesigned Keeneland Portfolio (keeneland.com/sales/Keeneland-portfolio) maximizes valuable information about horses cataloged and sold at Keeneland sales. This tool provides a number of new and enhanced features which al-low clients to create a sortable “short list” of horses; enter evaluation notes including a grade and free-form comments for each horse; and establish text or email alerts on its sta-tus, i.e., pedigree updates, when the horse is in the ring, its hammer price and if it has been withdrawn. Clients may also research a horse’s Keeneland sales history back to the 1999 July Selected Yearling Sale.

The Portfolio enables clients to manage and update their personal account information, and, for the first time, use this tool to apply for credit, check their credit balances, assign authorized agents for their account and monitor their sales transactions throughout the auction. Users also have the free-dom to update their contact information.

For consignors, Keeneland offers the online Consignor Portfolio (keeneland.com/sales/consignor-portfolio-entries) for managing consignment information, including the abil-ity to check Repository activity, print account summaries and statements on demand, and receive status alerts about their horses.

Keeneland.com also features searchable catalogs and re-sults for sales dating back to 1999 as well as sortable lists of stakes-winning Keeneland sales graduates available by year from 2010 to present.

Keeneland’s industry commitmentThe September Sale is the most important event of the year

at Keeneland, which holds four sales every year and offers world-class racing in April and October.

The sales division is the engine that drives Keeneland. Rev-enue from sales fuels race meet purses, which are among the richest in North America. Concurrently, many of the stakes winners at Keeneland are graduates of our auction ring.

Because of the synergy between its racing and sales op-erations, Keeneland plays a unique role in the Thoroughbred industry. Keeneland is structured as a private, for-profit cor-poration with a not-for-profit mission, and reinvests its earn-ings in the Thoroughbred industry.

Additionally, sales revenue pays for the operation of Keeneland’s racing and sales facilities; enables Keeneland to make charitable contributions that benefit the Thoroughbred industry and the Central Kentucky community (since 1936, these contributions have exceeded $18 million); and allows Keeneland to pursue innovative safety and welfare initiatives for people and horses and to fund equine research that ben-efits all breeds and disciplines.

Several notable developments at Keeneland occurred during the summer of 2014:

• Conversion of the 1 1/16-mile main track from a Poly-track surface to dirt. Horses began training over the new track in late August.

• Announcement that Keeneland will hold the 2015 Breeders’ Cup World Championships on Oct. 30-31. This will mark the first time the season-ending championship event has been held at the track.

• Announcement that the purse of the 2014 Shadwell Turf Mile (G1) has been increased from $750,000 to $1 mil-lion, creating the first million-dollar race in Keeneland history. The race will be run Saturday, Oct. 4, during the second day of Fall Stars Weekend.

Keeneland as a bid spotter and later chief announcer for sev-eral years following the departure of Tom Hammond.

Promoted to auctioneer in the mid ’80s, he succeeded the late Tom Caldwell in 2001 as senior auctioneer.

Mahan also serves on the inspection team for Keeneland’s September Yearling Sale.

He honed his inspection and sales recruiting skills as National Field Rep-resentative for Barretts’ Equine Ltd. (1996–2009) and with the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society (2007–2009). He also worked for Cromwell Bloodstock from 1990–1995.

team in July 2011 following his gradua-tion from the Darley Flying Start program. During that two-year course he worked at stud farms and racing stables in fi ve countries and completed internships under some of the world’s top trainers, including Sydney’s leading metropolitan trainer Chris Waller.

He interned with Keeneland in 2008–2009, and previously worked at Fares Farm.

A native of Winchester, Mayer is a 2008 Magna Cum Laude graduate of Transylvania University, where he earned a B.A. in Finance and French.

Highest Prices — September Yearling Sale

The Keeneland September Yearling Sale has evolved from humble beginnings to become the global marketplace for Thoroughbred yearlings.

From 1944, the inaugural year, through 1948, the fall yearlings were sold in an auction which included broodmares, weanlings, stallions, and horses of other ages. In 1949, approximately half of the yearlings were sold in a separate October sale and the remainder in a November mixed stock sale as usual. In 1950, the yearlings were sold separately by session, but in the same week as the other stock. In 1951, the fall yearling sales were set farther apart from the fall mixed stock sale, with the yearling auctions preceding the other sale by a week or more. In 1960, the yearling sales were moved to the month of September. In 1981, the yearling sale was held in two four-day segments. Selected sessions were inaugurated in 1989.

Claiborne FarmPresident: Walker HancockLocation: Paris, Ky.Website: claibornefarm.com

Background: The Hancock family’s Clai-borne Farm, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2010, is a world-famous Thoroughbred breeding and racing op-eration. Claiborne won Eclipse Awards as outstanding breeder in 1979 and 1984, and received the 2010 Eclipse Award of Merit for outstanding achieve-ment in the Thoroughbred industry.

Walker Hancock represents the fourth generation of the family to serve as farm president. His father, Seth, took over running the farm in 1972 follow-ing the death of his father, A.B. “Bull” Hancock Jr. Seth’s sister Dell also has taken an active role in the farm, racing stable and sales consignments.

Claiborne is famous for being the home of Secretariat. The 1973 Triple Crown winner is buried at the farm as are some of the most infl uential Thoroughbreds of all time. Each year, Claiborne welcomes thousands of fans to visit Secretariat’s grave, as well as see its 12 stallions. Among them are successful young sire War Front, whose sire, Danzig, stood at Claiborne; cham-pion Blame; and 2013 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Orb.

In 2014, Claiborne became the spon-sor of Keeneland’s $500,000 Breeders’ Futurity (G1), which will be run for the 101st time on Oct. 4 during Fall Stars Weekend. The stakes for 2-year-olds is a Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” race, awarding the winner a berth to the $2 million Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) on Nov. 1 at Santa Anita.

Claiborne has been a longtime con-signor to Keeneland Sales. Earlier this decade, the farm’s September Sale

graduates included champion War Pass, sold for $180,000 in 2006; Canadian Horse of the Year Arravale, sold for $190,000 in 2004; and Grade 1 winner Zensational, sold for $20,000 in 2007.

2010-2013 stakes winners consigned to the September Sale: Grade 1 winners Contested, Ice Box; Grade 2 winners Buenas Costumbres, Lideris, Newsdad, Viramundo; Grade 3 winners Clearly Now, Jack Milton, Northern Passion, Peace Preserver., Waterway Run; stakes winner Dream Nettie.__________________________________

Denali Stud Owners: Craig and Holly BandoroffLocation: Paris, Ky.Website: denalistud.com

Background: Craig Bandoroff was a jockey in New Jersey in the early 1970s until a spill at Garden State Park in 1974 left him without the use of his right arm, forc-ing him to explore

other career paths within the industry. He and wife Holly each gained experi-ence working in various bloodstock and sales capacities, and in 1990 they opened Denali Stud. “Denali” is derived from the name given by the Es-kimos to Mt. McKinley and means “the great one.”

In the late 1990s, Bob Lewis and his wife, Beverly, sent champion Serena’s Song to Denali after she was retired. Denali has sold several of Serena Song’s offspring, including Group 1 winner Sophisticat, by Storm Cat, for $3.4 million at the 2000 Keeneland July Selected Yearling Sale; Grade 2 win-

ner Harlington, by Unbridled, for $2.8 million at the 2003 September Sale; and Colourful Score, a colt by Storm Cat, for $3.5 million at the 2005 September Sale.

Denali consigned to the September Sale two future Kentucky Derby (G1) winners: Real Quiet, who won the Derby and Preakness (G1) in 1998, and Animal Kingdom, winner of the 2011 Derby. Another of Denali’s September Sale graduates is champion Left Bank.

2014 stakes winners as of Sept. 1 consigned to the September Sale:Grade 1 winner V. E. Day; stakes win-ners Lolo Forever, Red Raven.

2010-2013 stakes winners consigned to the September Sale: Kentucky Derby (G1) and Dubai World Cup (G1) win-ner and champion Animal Kingdom; Grade 2 winners Bourbon Bay, Hero of Order, Kathmanblu, Straight Story; Grade 3 winners Cleburne, Freedom Star, Hessonite, Le Grand Cru, Lolo For-ever, Orchestrator, Schramsberg, Splash Point.__________________________________

In 2008, Clay’s son, Case, became the farm’s president. In 2014, Three Chimneys stood nine stallions, includ-ing Big Brown, Exchange Rate, Flower Alley, Sky Mesa and Yes It’s True.

In November 2012, the Torrealba fam-ily of Brazil became a partner in Three Chimneys. The Torrealbas also own the Lexington farm formerly owned by Satish Sanan’s Padua Stables.

Goncalo Torrealba has enjoyed a great deal of success in the U.S. He raced Grade 1 winner Cara Rafaela, named after his daughter; Cara Rafaela pro-duced champion Bernardini and was the 2006 Broodmare of the Year. He also raced champion Leroidesanimaux (BRZ), who became the sire of Ken-tucky Derby (G1) and Dubai World Cup (G1) winner Animal Kingdom.

The Torrealbas and Three Chimneys have made several notable acquisitions at Keeneland sales. At the 2012 Keene-land November Breeding Stock Sale, Borges Torrealba paid the sale-topping price of $4.5 million for Grade 1 win-ner Pure Clan, in foal to Bernardini. At the 2013 Keeneland September Year-

“Three Chimneys has decided to focus on three main goals and they are to add top quality stallion prospects to the stallion barn, develop a strong brood-mare band and raise horses with the highest standard of horsemanship and care,” Clay told The Blood-Horse.

In August, Three Chimneys announced it had entered a breeding and racing partnership with Ben Leon’s Besilu Sta-bles. The objective of the new partner-ship is to breed and race at the highest levels in the industry.__________________________________

At Keeneland’s 2013 September Year-ling Sale, M.V. Magnier purchased

four yearlings for a grand total of $5.9 million. His most expensive purchase was the $2.5 million sale-topper, a colt by War Front. Other acquisitions were the $1.4 million colt by Galileo (IRE), the $1 million son of Tapit and the $1 million colt by War Front.

John Magnier helped establish Cool-more as one of the world’s leading stallion operations. In 1975, legendary trainer Vincent O’Brien tapped him to manage Coolmore for O’Brien and partner Robert Sangster. Their associa-tion resulted in Coolmore’s domination of the European classics during the late 1970s and 1980s often with horses purchased at Keeneland sales.

Magnier principally campaigns horses in the colors of his wife, Susan, daugh-ter of Vincent O’Brien. Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith also are Coolmore business associates. Tabor earned Keeneland’s gold tray during the 2008 Fall Meet in recognition of his eighth graded stakes win at the track.

Either individually or in various partnerships, the Magniers, Tabor and Smith have been represented by numerous Group or Grade 1 winners and champions in Europe and the U.S. In 2005, O’Byrne purchased future champion Rags to Riches on behalf of Tabor and Smith for $1.9 million at the September Sale. Rags to Riches won the 2007 Kentucky Oaks (G1) and became only the third fi lly in history to win the Belmont (G1).

Coolmore Ireland stands such leading stallions as Galileo (IRE) and Dane-hill Dancer, while Giant’s Causeway, Tale of the Cat and Lookin At Lucky are among the stallions at Ashford.
