Dear Friends,i can’t believe all that God has done and continues to do through the efforts of the show Hope team… and that includes you! steven and i are so thankful that you are a part of this team that God has built and is building to restore the hope of a family to orphans in distress.

it never ceases to amaze me when i hear stories of the lives that have been changed forever through the work of show Hope and its donors. i remember walking through Disney World almost ten years ago when a very elated family stopped us to introduce their precious little girl, who show Hope had helped bring home through an adoption aid grant. Just last week, a family with tears in their eyes told me that if it wasn’t for the work of maria’s Big House of Hope, their child would not have survived to come into the love of a family. students and adults are going on trips where their hearts are stretched and shaped, and adoptive parents nationwide are receiving hope through the empowered to connect conferences. i know that these stories comprise merely a fraction of the thousands of lives that have been transformed.

We are humbled at what God is accomplishing through this team of show Hopers (meaning each one of you). every day, God is faithfully using us as his body, and children’s lives are being transformed. Thank you for listening to the need and considering where you fit into the Kingdom work of caring for orphans.

There is much to do. We appreciate you, love you, and pray that wherever you are on your own journey, God meets you there and whispers his truth to the deepest part of your heart. For we are all former orphans on our own journey, and by God’s amazing grace, we have a home.

For an orphan, facing the future alone is terrifying:+ Orphans are more vulnerable to malnutrition, poverty, exploitation, trafficking, and isolation.

+ Those with special medical needs may not make it to their 10th birthday. These children are often unable to receive the life-giving care they need, and are particularly vulnerable to abuse and neglect.

Orphans need families. Millions of children around the world are waiting and longing for a family of their own.

Without the love and protection of a family, orphans often encounter:

+ Medical Challenges: Without a caretaker, a child is very susceptible to malnutrition, developmental delays, parasitic infections, and other health concerns. Moreover, those impacted by HIV/AIDS have little hope of treatment.

+ Human Trafficking: Without a family to protect them, a child becomes an ideal target for exploitation and trafficking.

+ Educational Struggles: Without parents to advocate for them, even a child in a country with a stable educational system can easily fall through the cracks or behind their peers.

+ Hopelessness: Without a stable family to support and encourage them, a child may live with a daily sense of hopelessness for what their future holds.

There are countless children waiting and hoping for the love of a family, but many will never experience this gift because of the great financial barrier to adoption, which can exceed $25,000 in total cost.

Show Hope’s ADOPTION AID grants help children enter the love of a family by helping overcome this financial barrier, transforming the life of a child from an orphan to a beloved son or daughter!

Why Adoption Aid?

God sets the lonely in families.

We believe that everyone can do something to make a difference for vulnerable children around the world. This year, many children who had been adopted into families partnered with show Hope to help other kids come home to forever families as well!

Kids Helping Kids

Aphiwe, adopted from South Africa

aphiwe donated his 11th birthday party to show Hope in order to help another child come home to a forever family. To kick-start his campaign, aphiwe donated every penny he had earned since coming to america! His friends and family then pitched in to help him raise enough money to fund an entire adoption aid grant!

Ashlyn, adopted from Kazakhstan

ashlyn was adopted at the age of 10 months. Now 9, she wanted to do something to help other kids who are waiting for a family. “i want them to receive the love and care that i did.” as a show Hope advocate, ashlyn turned her love of making bracelets into a way to raise funds and awareness for other waiting children.

eli, adopted from Ethiopia

eli and his brothers hosted a spring Festival to raise awareness and much-needed medical supplies for waiting children with special needs. Friends and family were invited to bring medical supplies to the event to help fill a big red suitcase that would be shipped to show Hope’s special care centers in china. The boys’ mother, april, recalls, “it was so wonderful to watch the kids come to the realization that they were helping make a difference in the lives of children in need.”

Kensey, adopted from China

To honor the anniversary of her “coming home” day, 6-year-old Kensey cuti wanted to help the children in show Hope’s care centers. after consulting show Hope’s list of needed supplies, Kensey set a goal to collect 200 onesies for maria’s Big House of Hope. she spoke at local churches and a radio show and quickly surpassed her goal. altogether, Kensey collected over 400 onesies and $2,200 for the work of show Hope!

Delhi, india, august 4, 2010—see the small girl, standing alone in the crowded market, overlooked as so many are. Her dark hair unkempt; dirt smeared across her well-worn clothes; her eyes warm, but reserved. long dresses and pant legs stream past, all unfamiliar, uninterested, and she wanders toward the main street where cars much taller than she and rickshaws and cows make her nervous and afraid. The girl begins to cry.shopkeepers with their jarring shouts compete to pull passing eyes toward stalls stocked with brightly-colored clothing and jewelry. The air is thick with the discordant blend of fresh and discarded food, perfume, perspiration, goats, and spices, and as day turns dark the girl waits with diminishing expectation for the woman who left her there but will not return. in time, a police officer notices and perhaps recognizes the girl as the same child who was abandoned two days earlier in this same market. The girl in her fright explains all she knows and is taken to a local catholic orphanage where she is greeted by a nun and led past a cradle drop box where babies can be safely placed by caretakers making excruciating choices. The nun offers her food and takes her picture, and the girl looks glad to be in this place, grateful that her distress has been relieved. she is off the street and she has a bed, at least for this night. spin the globe on this same august evening, and touch down in Houston. see Wes and Kasey mathew in their home. scan the biographical bullets: high school sweethearts, both talented enough to receive scholarships to the University of Texas, she for softball, he for music. Kasey is a pastor’s daughter and Wes is a first-generation american from a christian indian family. she taught elementary school for nine years; he’s happily self-employed. They have a three-year-old daughter, Priya, silly and sensitive and as kind-hearted as they come. look into her big brown eyes and it is evident that she knows something fun, like maybe she’s played a joke on you and can’t wait to burst with joy when you finally figure it out. Very much unlike her parents this girl loves animals, especially the ones that swim, which is sure to spell trouble somewhere down the line for an unsuspecting pet fish that might prefer to not be kissed by a human child.

The girl is full of life, and her personality blossoms more every day. Would you believe me if i told you she screamed in terror as Wes and Kasey carried her from the Hindu orphanage where she had been living just a few months earlier, her tiny heart beating a million miles a minute, blind to the riches and security of the loving arms that were holding her? Zoom out again, rewind the tape to June 2009. Travel east all the way to latvia, a small country tucked between russia and the Baltic sea. Wes and Kasey are in their late 20s and hoping to adopt someday, but they plan on having biological children first. in latvia, everything will change. They’re here leading a team from their church at a summer camp for orphaned children, and they connect deeply with these kids who are so starved for interaction with parental figures. On the plane ride home, Kasey tells Wes that she doesn’t think they should keep waiting to adopt, and he agrees. Their social worker suggests india, and they apply as soon as possible. The entire process is quick, smooth. Ten months after the latvia trip they are in india to meet and bring home their first child, Priya Grace mathew. at the hotel that night she does nothing but sit on the bed and stare at her new parents, but by the next morning she’s smiling and playing pattycake with Kasey and showing Wes flowers outside the window. soon after bringing her home they know they are called to adopt again, and they begin the process of adopting a second child from india. close to two years later, no referral had come. costs began to mount as paperwork needed to be renewed. They had the money needed to move forward saved in an untouchable adoption fund, but they began to wonder if they had misunderstood God’s leading. There were times when the wait was miserable, and they began to grow so weary that they considered shutting everything down. still, they always came back to the truth that the one they were waiting on was God—not the orphanage, not a government, but God, the one with all knowledge, the one with all sight. Then, in January 2013, Wes got sick. Forty pounds fell off in one month. Despite test after test, the doctors couldn’t figure out what was wrong. as hospital bills piled up, the mathews had no choice—the untouchable money had to be spent. all the money they had saved for their adoption was wiped out, and the referral could come any day. Their doubt and frustration had never been stronger. Wes got better as mysteriously as he had become sick, and he was released from the hospital on February 15, 2013. This was great news, but it didn’t change the difficult realities of the waiting, the funding depleted, the child in india still without a family. They trusted God, but none of it made sense. The following sunday their church was having a special service about adoption and orphan care when the pastor surprised them with a gift. The church gave an adoption aid grant in partnership with show Hope to help fund the adoption. Generous donors from across the country gave to help their daughter come home to her family. so many people became a part of their journey. What no one knew, except Wes and Kasey, was that the amount of the gift was the exact amount that had been taken from their adoption account to pay Wes’ medical bills. God had replaced

Page 21: 2014 Show Hope Miracles Book

every single penny. less than two weeks later, they received a referral from the orphanage, which was in Delhi. The child was a five-year-old girl with warm, reserved eyes, and a sweet, shy smile. in the months that followed, the mathews prepared for their new daughter, who would be named Hope sara. The bedroom was painted and gifts were purchased. Priya, now almost six, couldn’t wait to meet her little sister. she kissed Hope’s picture and prayed for her several times a day, that she wouldn’t be scared to come into this family that would be so different from all she knew at the orphanage. everything was ready, but the process continued to move slowly on the ground in india. after praying and fasting, Wes and Kasey agreed that God was telling them to go and advocate for Hope. They obeyed, and once there they watched God plow through obstacles with ease. They kept hearing the word “impossible” from men and women in authority—impossible to get police clearance for Hope to leave, impossible to get her passport expedited, impossible to get her visa quickly. But what was supposed to take weeks took days; what should have taken days took hours. in the land of countless gods, the one true God did His work through and in front of police officers, nuns, hotel workers, and a taxi driver who cried with Wes and Kasey as everything fell into place. They met Hope for the first time on Thursday, march 27, 2014. Priya had brought her a stuffed bunny and was giving her all the hugs she could handle. One week later, they were all home. see the mathew family now, on an autumn evening in 2014. They might be playing soccer in the yard before coming in for dinner, and after dinner the two girls will dance in their indian princess dresses, giggling at each other’s silliness with every twist and turn. enjoy time with these girls tonight and you would never guess they had both gone through the trauma of losing their birth families, of life on the streets, of emotional and physical abuse. You would only see them as beautiful, loving girls, full of joy to be at home with their mom, their papa, and each other. Priya says she wants to be a marine biologist when she grows up, or at least work in a pet store, and Hope wants to be a dance teacher. But in these early years they have more ambitious plans, too, like buying a big house together in india where all the kids from each of their orphanages can come live and be part of a family. as for Wes and Kasey, they’re not looking ahead quite yet. Hope has been home for several months, and they’re walking with her through the healing process that will be their companion for some time. They’re teaching her that she can depend on a mom and dad who won’t hurt or abandon her, and a heavenly Father who loves her and has been her shepherd all her life. They still struggle to understand why she had to wait so long to come into their family, but they know that God knew she would be coming home at this age, and they’re in awe of the incomparable glory He brought himself all along the way. They’ve always envisioned a house filled with children, and they know orphan care remains in their future as long as they have breath. They also know that little in their lives has gone the way they imagined it. after all, this is a family that never should have happened according to the plans of man. Wes was supposed to be given in an arranged marriage to a girl of indian heritage, an expectation that lasted long after he and Kasey had declared their mutual intentions. latvia? They weren’t supposed to be on that trip, but stepped in the day before departure when the original leaders had to back out for medical reasons. The second adoption was supposed to be as painless as the first, and the list goes on. But God has always seen what man cannot, and the mathew family is growing exactly according to plan—a plan that has included many generous donors and supporters who helped make Hope’s homecoming a reality.

priya says she wants to be a marine biologist when she grows up, or at least work in a pet store, and Hope wants to be a dance teacher. But in these early years they have more ambitious plans, too, like buying a big house together in india where all the kids from each of their orphanages can come live and be part of a family.

Adoption can cost tens of thousands of dollars. Due to the financial barrier, children all around the world are separated

from families who desire to adopt but can’t afford it.

Show Hope’s Adoption Aid grants build a bridge of hope that allows children to come home to these loving families.

Currently, Show Hope receives approximately 1,000 applications every year, each representing a waiting child. Unfortunately, due to a lack of funding, Show Hope has to turn away more

than 50% of those applications each year.

Your donation to Show Hope will help provide another waiting child with a loving family!

Why Special Care Centers?

“…When you did it to one of the least of these… you were doing it to me.”Matthew 25:40

Without parents to provide and advocate, far too many waiting children are unable to receive the medical care they desperately need to survive.

although an orphanage may care for the needs of hundreds of children, they are often limited in the amount of resources and expertise needed for children who require specialized medical attention. a child might become neglected or ignored when their case becomes hopeless. even if their life-threatening condition can be corrected by surgery, the necessary resources might not be available.

in reality, the hope of survival for many orphans with special needs is very small, and many do not live to their 10th birthday. show Hope’s care ceNTers answer this great need by providing life-saving medical care for these precious children.

When the Chapmans arrived in China five years ago to celebrate the grand opening of Maria’s Big House of Hope (MBHOH), few could have imagined the incredible impact this center would have on the lives of so many waiting children. This summer, the Chapmans and our partners in China visited the Nanyang Children’s Welfare Institute, the future site of Show Hope’s fifth Care Center.

When they arrived, the bus was greeted by a delegation of Chinese officials who had organized a tour of the compound, including the newly renovated building that had been offered to serve as Show Hope’s new Care Center. As the tour continued, the officials paused to note an even larger building that they desired to offer to Show Hope, instead of the original one. As the staff looked over the plans for the second building, excitement began to grow.

The new building is large enough to provide care for seventy-two children at a time, along with plenty of rooms for nurses, nannies, and members of Show Hope’s short-term trips—a feature that is currently only available at MBHOH. During the tour, someone in the group mentioned that the larger building would require additional funding, to which someone else responded, “God will provide!” One month later, the truth of this statement became abundantly clear.

Show Hope’s fundraising goal for the new Nanyang Care Center was more than doubled in the initial campaign, as $65,000 was raised through the loving generosity of our sponsors and donors. In response to this outpouring of support, Mary Beth Chapman said, “We are once again reminded that this is all God’s doing, and we’re so amazed to see his continued work through Show Hope.” The amount raised through these fundraising efforts will go a long way toward outfitting the new facility and providing life-giving care to orphans with special needs, but additional funding is still needed to provide for the ongoing care of the children.

Growing Hope

Show Hope partners with STAR Physical Therapy to bring hope and healing to children in Show Hope Care Centers.

It is often the routine elements of daily life that we take for granted, like having fingers that work in unison to pick up an item or button a shirt, joints that allow range of motion to move food from the plate to the mouth, or a spine that enables the body to sit or stand with ease. For many of the children who come under the care of Show Hope’s Special Care Centers in China, these simple daily tasks are anything but simple. Children like Hope, who has cerebral palsy, or Yaniza, who was born with spina bifida, or Ryker, whose joints have been impacted by arthrogryposis, face major obstacles to mobility, independence, and even survival. However, they are greatly helped by having regular access to physical therapy. This component of care is a key resource in opening new opportunities for proper development and function.

At least one-third of the children who come through the doors of Show Hope’s Care Centers in China require some degree of daily physical therapy. To meet this growing need, Show Hope has partnered with STAR Physical Therapy and US Physical Therapy to send trained therapists for up to a year at a time to serve children in these Centers, including Maria’s Big House of Hope.

STAR Physical Therapy writes: “In 2012, STAR sent a group of physical therapists as part of a medical team to Luoyang, China. As is often the case with this type of trip, we found an overwhelming desire to give more consistent care. The expertise that STAR’s team was able to provide set the stage for what could be possible in emerging care in the future. In 2013, a subsequent trip to China confirmed that the full-time presence of a pediatric physical therapist would not be a luxury, but a necessity. That trip set the wheels in motion to develop a plan to provide this loving service to the children under care.”

Show Hope is very excited about the expected impact of this new partnership with STAR and US Physical Therapy as we work together to better meet the needs of the children who come into our Care Centers. To learn more about this partnership, visit showhope.org/chinapt.

For many families, the decision to adopt begins as a “sense”—an acknowledgement that God may be calling them into a greater story that he is writing for them. For Kyle and amber robinson, this sense began once they realized that there were more than 140 million children in the world who needed loving parents. They knew God was leading them to add to their family through adoption. a cHilD WaiTiNG – One year ago, there was a little girl on the other side of the world, waiting. she was born with a serious heart defect, which left her very sick and in great need of medical help. abandoned, she might have ended up in a state-run orphanage, where there wouldn’t have been sufficient resources to care for her well.

But God had a different plan for her life. He began orchestrating endless intricate details to write a beautiful story for this precious girl named eisley.

THe call TO aDOPT – amber and Kyle began to feel the desire to start a family four years ago. after years of struggling with infertility and walking through the heartbreak of a miscarriage, they began to sense that God’s plan for their family might be different from what they originally thought. What they did know with certainty of faith was that whatever God’s plan might be, they would trust in his unfailing provision.

Not long after, Kyle and amber went to dinner with a couple from their church who had recently adopted a daughter from china. after talking to them, Kyle and amber felt the first sense that perhaps they should pursue adoption over further fertility treatments. as the robinsons sought God’s plan through prayer, they began to feel deeply that he was calling them to adopt a child from china. However, they had no idea whether they could afford to adopt and were fearful that the process would be too hard for them.

Given the fact that the minimum age for parents to adopt from china stands at 30, Kyle and amber had a little over a year to wait before they could formally begin the adoption process. They knew the road ahead wouldn’t be easy, but they also knew in their hearts that they were following the path God intended for them. What they couldn’t know was just how perfectly God was arranging their journey, entwining their hearts with that of their future child.

DiscOVeriNG sHOW HOPe – One thing that helped Kyle and amber through the days of waiting was a shared love for steven curtis chapman’s music, which they both grew up listening to. in fact, Kyle’s very first cD was steven’s album The Great Adventure, which he received from his parents as a christmas gift when he was around 10 years old!

During the time they were waiting to formally begin the adoption process, they attended one of steven’s concerts when he came to their area. During the show, they heard wonderful stories about the work show Hope was doing around the world for orphans and about the care being provided to waiting children in need of medical attention at show Hope’s special care centers, like maria’s Big House of Hope (mBHOH) in luoyang, china. That night, they bought You Were Always In My Heart: A Shaoey and Dot Adoption Story by steven and his wife mary Beth to read to their child someday.

after the concert, amber wrote an entry in her journal detailing all she had learned about show Hope and mBHOH. They purchased steven’s Glorious Unfolding cD at the concert, eventually referring to the album as their “adoption anthem” because it gave them the hope and strength they needed during those long, difficult days of waiting. Understanding more about the care that was being provided to children in need of families at mBHOH gave Kyle and amber a great deal of encouragement, because it provided some hope that their future child might also receive the love and attention he/she would need as they waited. Though they heard a great deal about show Hope’s growing reach to help more children, there was simply no way to ensure that their future child would receive that level of care. still, they continued to hold out hope.

FiNaNcial NeeD – This was the robinsons’ first exposure to mBHOH and the work of show Hope, but it wouldn’t be the last as they moved forward in their adoption process. The next would occur while researching the costs associated with adoption, which Kyle and amber realized they wouldn’t be able to cover on their own. amber also knew that she wanted to stay home to care for their child, which would add to their financial need.

Taking everything they had learned about show Hope into account, they knew that a grant from the organization would be an answer to their prayers, so they sent in their application. shortly after, they learned that they were awarded a grant! it was a cooperative grant given in combination by show Hope and Tapestry, a church-based organization in their area that focuses on serving families as they travel along the adoption journey. Kyle and amber were relieved and thankful that the lord had provided for their family in this way.

THe WaiT – The couple sent their dossier to china on the same day amber turned 30. six weeks later, they received their official login date and were given a time-frame of one to nine months until they could expect to receive a referral. To their surprise, they received the referral in just TWO days, along with the first photo they ever saw of their daughter!

The file included details of their daughter’s medical history, through which Kyle and amber learned that she had significant heart issues and had recently undergone heart surgery. The couple had a cardiologist at children’s medical center in Dallas review her file, and they learned that she would likely need additional surgeries in the coming years, as well as lifelong follow-up appointments to properly treat her heart condition.

Given this hard news, Kyle and amber immediately turned to prayer, asking for God’s guidance. They were already aware of how precious children with special needs are, and they had seen how show Hope was enabling more children with needs like these to have the hope of a family. it wasn’t long until it became undeniably clear to them that this precious girl was

their daughter. They officially accepted her referral and received pre-approval from china on christmas Day 2013.

Beyond the photo they were given and the basic information on her heart condition and treatment to date, Kyle and amber had no other details about their daughter or her whereabouts. as they waited for her on the other side of the world, they prayed that she would receive the care and attention she needed as she recovered from surgery, and they left the rest in God’s hands.

THe BiG DiscOVerY – in an effort to learn about her history, the robinsons requested an update from their adoption agency. after several weeks, they were excited to receive six additional photos of her! With longer hair and four teeth, she was already looking

Page 33: 2014 Show Hope Miracles Book

29s h o w h o p e . o r g

“ “so much older than she had in the original referral photo. since the initial information didn’t provide details about where their daughter was receiving care, Kyle and amber tried to piece together as much information as they could from the photos. One thing they were able to determine was that she was in luoyang, china. it was at that point that they noticed one small detail in the photos that led to a big discovery. Kyle noticed a unique “key hole” doorway and suddenly remembered where he had seen that same architecture before: in photos of maria’s Big House of Hope on show Hope’s website!

excited at the prospect of their daughter receiving care in a place about which they had learned so many good things, they quickly went to show Hope’s website to scour for any information that might be there about their daughter. They scrolled through photos of all the children in mBHOH’s care and found what they were hoping for—a special prayer page that show Hope had listed for a little girl in their care named “eisley” as she recovered from heart surgery. eisley’s photo matched the ones that Kyle and amber had received from their adoption agency. This was their daughter and she was living at maria’s Big House of Hope!!!

Kyle and amber were moved to tears as they learned that their daughter was being nurtured and cared for by loving people in a place they knew and trusted. Not only that, but they also now realized that there were people around the world praying for them (as eisley’s forever family) just as they were also praying for eisley herself!

The robinson’s joy overflowed as they pieced together God’s perfect plan for their family. While they had worried about whether their daughter was receiving the care she needed, God had brought her to a place where she would be safe and nurtured. and not just any place, but a place about which Kyle and amber had come to learn and trust through a shared love of steven curtis chapman’s music! Who else but God could orchestrate such intricate details?

TOGeTHer aT lasT – During their travel to china to bring their daughter home, Kyle and amber felt it was important to make the effort to visit maria’s Big House of Hope and see the place that played such a large role in their daughter’s survival. During their visit, it quickly became clear to them how great an impact show Hope and their care centers had on the life of their daughter. God used the care provided to not only save the life of their daughter, but also to expose her to the love and nurture she needed to thrive and form healthy relationships. Their daughter laughed and hugged her former nannies and little friends, and it was plain to see that she had been loved and treasured by her caretakers.

Today, their daughter is expressive and vibrant and the robinsons are confident that it is because of the priceless love she received at mBHOH during that critical time in her life. Her physical life was rescued and her emotional development was nurtured during her time under care. so many children just like eisley are in desperate need of holistic care, and by the grace of God, this is being provided at show Hope’s special care centers!

GOD’s PerFecT PlaN – For the robinsons, it was a long and, at times, difficult path to becoming a forever family, but they never stopped praying for and following God’s call. looking back, it is so clear that God knitted together every single detail of their incredible adoption journey.

Through the generous support of thousands of donors, sponsors, and supporters, God provided the medical care that eisley needed. In fact, he used many of those same donors and sponsors to also help provide the finances needed for her to have a forever family. Many, many people joined together to be a part of this little girl’s miraculous story.

Now, eisley is home with Kyle and amber, and they have named her Willow mei. Willow is Kyle and amber’s first child, but she won’t be an only child for very long—the robinsons are planning to adopt again!

the robinson’s joy overflowed as they pieced together God’s perfect plan for their family.

““at just three weeks of age, our sick little reed arrived at maria’s Big House of Hope (mBHOH). There he was loved, nurtured, and nursed to health for the first year of his life. When we went to china to bring him home, we were blessed to visit both mBHOH and show Hope’s care center in Zhengzhou.

We had the joy of meeting the doctor who initially assessed our son and helped with his surgery. We were thrilled to meet his nanny and be able to thank her for lovingly pouring out her life for our child. We also learned that a nurse had sat with our precious boy after surgery and throughout his time in recovery, never leaving his side. We were able to witness the amazing care given to keep the children attended and healthy.

We are tremendously grateful for the loving care reed received during the first year of his life at maria’s Big House of Hope. Without such wonderfully attentive care, it’s very likely he would not have survived.”

Unfortunately, there are still thousands more orphans who

need this level of care but are not able to receive it because show Hope does not have the funds.

adoption extends well beyond the moment a child is welcomed into their forever family. it includes the ongoing journey of children and parents as they learn to live and love as a family in ways that bring greater healing and connection. The desire to help adoptive and foster families learn how to best meet the unique needs of children from difficult beginnings has resulted in a partnership between show Hope, empowered to connect (eTc), and Dr. Karyn Purvis, a child psychologist at Texas christian University. Together, we are presenting empowered to connect conferences nationwide, geared toward educating those who are caring for children from hard places.

eTc conferences use the work of Dr. Purvis and specifically teach the benefits of implementing Trust-Based relational intervention. This resource greatly helps parents, foster families, and professionals begin to implement better ways to engage and meet the needs of children who have experienced some level of attachment injury or early trauma, such as abuse, neglect, and/or abandonment.

Through this partnership, show Hope is able to serve adoption agencies, mental health professionals, churches, and grant families by providing the tools and resources needed to help bring hope and healing to children and their families.

Show Hope is dedicated to providing education and training to adoptive and foster families across the United States. Through partnerships with Empowered to Connect and Focus on the Family, Show Hope has helped to train families, professionals, and church ministry leaders to be faithful and successful in meeting the ongoing needs of the children God has called them to love and serve. There is a great need to offer real, tangible hope so that countless orphaned and vulnerable children will not only belong to a loving family, but can fully experience healing and transformation as well.

like most first-time parents, we headed into the journey of adoption feeling that most (if not all) of our children’s injuries could be healed in time through the love and nurture we could provide through our family. as our early days with infants and toddlers have turned into years with adolescents and teens in transition to adulthood, Dan allender’s perspective on parenting has begun to ring more true than our earlier ideas - “Parenting is not just difficult; it’s impossible.”

so how do we go about this business of ushering in healing for our children? First of all, we need to exhibit a willingness to consider the significance of their early injuries. The foundational loss of our children’s first secure base and safe haven leaves them with an uncertainty that they continually seek to fill. and for most, walking through such unsure beginnings leaves them with lingering questions that need to be answered: ”am i loved?” “am i acceptable?” “am i delighted in?”

if we’re honest, i think most of us would have to admit that more often than not, we’ve missed answering these questions for our children. We spend much of our parenting energies in an effort to avoid facing this failure and to the extent that we do, miss the incredible opportunity to grow along with our kids. instead of feeling that we as parents have arrived, we need to take on the more truthful mindset that we are also in process and need to grow together. While it is true that we as parents know more about the world than our children, that’s about it. We can’t pretend that we don’t have room to grow from our engagement with our kids. after all, aren’t we also looking for the same answers that our children seek? more than anything else, we need to see that we join our children in this journey.

Growing—or better, growing up—depends in large part on how we choose to engage both joy and sorrow, beauty and brokenness. certainly we see it as our job to help our children grow up, but the irony is, that in the midst of this effort, we often miss our own opportunities for growth. and as many have experienced, parenting “kids from hard

places” can be especially rife with opportunities for growth! There is no doubt that we are called to love, guide, shape, counsel, coach, mentor, and encourage our children. But will we squander the opportunity for parenting to be the context in which we allow God—through our children—to shape and grow us?

We want to believe that if we do our part and keep a steady hand in helping them grow spiritually, do their homework, get involved in sports, learn an instrument, etc., they’ll glean enough from it to be set for adult life without too many bumps. However, all too often life doesn’t cooperate, and when the bumps get too turbulent, we are the ones who get thrown off. What would it mean to listen well enough to our children to actually hear their hearts? How can we tune into the hopes and dreams, questions, and unspoken longings beneath their words and actions? is reminding them, “i’m just doing this for your own good” enough to answer the question that lies foundational to nearly all other questions: “Will you delight in me (even if i fail)?” The hard truth is that we will only be able to answer this question for our children if we first know the answer for ourselves. each and every encounter with my children can, if i let it, serve as an invitation to open my own heart to the voice of God and hear him speak his love and mercy to me.

Our children need to experience the comfort and security of consistent boundaries and appropriate discipline aND the kindness of being loved “no matter what.” as we press in to listen to the myriad of different ways our children ask us this fundamental question (“am i loved/lovable?”), we find that we are actually listening to an invitation to embrace growth both for them and for us. and to the degree that we accept our children’s surprising and distressing invitation, we can hear the voice of One who delights in us even as we risk and fail exquisitely in our efforts to raise our children well.

Thankfully, today there are more resources than ever to help families as they work to address their child’s foundational need for healing and wholeness. show Hope’s empowered to connect conferences are a great resourcefor foster families and families built through adoption as they work to better understand their children and press into their needs. The resources offered through empowered to connect are also shaping the practices of countless mental health professionals and social workers as “attachment and connection” begin to move into the forefront of their practices. This movement toward providing post-placement resources is of great importance as we seek to meet the needs of orphans all over the world – that waiting children would not only find the love of a family, but find healing and hope as well.

What would it mean to listen well enough to our children to actually hear their hearts? How can we tune into the hopes and dreams, questions, and unspoken longings beneath their words and actions?

empowered to connect has been an incredible resource. it has helped prepare us for our next adoption while also teaching us techniques to most effectively parent our son from Uganda, who has now been home for three years. Yes, even three years into connecting with him, meeting his needs, listening, and understanding triggers, we still need more education and reinforcement of connecting principles. and to be honest, we always will. all adoptive families always will!

if you are in the process of adopting now, let me encourage you to focus on your spiritual walk with christ and on educating yourself regarding the skills needed to parent a child from hard places. if you have already adopted, never stop pursuing the techniques and strategies that will help you parent most effectively. empowered to connect has been an incredible resource. it has helped prepare us for our next adoption while also teaching us techniques to most effectively parent our son from Uganda, who has now been home for three years. Yes, even three years into connecting with him, meeting his needs, listening, and understanding triggers, we still need more education and reinforcement of connecting principles. and to be honest, we always will. all adoptive families always will!

if you are in the process of adopting now, let me encourage you to focus on your spiritual walk with christ and on educating yourself regarding the skills needed to parent a child from hard places. if you have already adopted, never stop pursuing the techniques and strategies that will help you parent most effectively. children who have experienced the brokenness of being orphaned need the hope and healing that comes from families equipped for the journey. However, for children who come from hard places, traditional parenting tools and techniques are often inadequate.

children who were once orphaned can continue to live out of the hurt and loss they experienced in their early days even though they now have the resources, love, and security of a forever family.

show Hope is dedicated to equipping families through conferences, resources, and ministry support so that children have the opportunity to receive the healing they need. already we have helped thousands of children experience that healing!

Your donation to show Hope will help ensure these children receive a lifetime of love from those equipped to help them heal, so they no longer have to live as orphans.

The secret to the impact of show Hope is not found in the staff, the Board, or any individual. it is found in the mobilization of the Body of christ to join God in his work to care for orphans.

Because of the generosity of donors who support our efforts to raise awareness and mobilize a movement, we have seen tens of thousands of advocates, sponsors, students, families, individuals, and communities step forward to care for the needs of orphans. These generous hearts are multiplying their gifts by stewarding their resources to effectively and fruitfully respond to the orphan crisis!

show Hope is a movement to care for orphans. We are parents and students, missionaries and executives, teachers and tax accountants, fundraisers and prayer warriors. We are a united body that together is changing the world for orphans.

““

i first encountered the raw reality of what life is like for orphans during a short-term trip abroad when i was a freshman in high school. as i stood in an orphanage that housed more than 800 children, my heart began to break. i thought about how my parents had loved me so deeply and so well my entire life, and i wondered who loved and provided for these children that were in such a vulnerable state.

i left that experience changed and ignited, determined to do something. i wanted these children to know love—not only the love of a family, but also the love so deep and so wide of the One who could heal all of their troubles and love them more than anyone else. This passion drove me to begin a journey into orphan care at the age of fifteen. i knew that i could not adopt at that age, so i sought out other ways to get involved. i soon learned that advocating for children was one of the most powerful things i could do on their behalf.

i began to tell the stories of orphans i had met to my friends, my family, and my church. i described their situations and shared the hopes and prayers that i had for them to find the love and support of a family. i continued to throw myself into this endeavor, and it began to define me. But in the face of the stark reality of more than 140 million orphans in the world, i found myself too small. i began to realize this was not something i could do on my own.

Through show Hope’s student initiative and The movement club, i discovered other students who also wanted to make a difference and i realized that this was something that must be done as a body of believers. as i became more aware of my own fragility and limitations, i also realized the necessity of acknowledging the sovereignty of God. His plan and his will for these children is what matters most. as this realization sank in, i found the freedom needed to allow him to define me and then work through me to care for his beloved children.

This is a lesson i have carried into college, where i’ve continued to advocate for waiting children through show Hope’s red Bus Project, and as a 2014 summer intern at maria’s Big House of Hope. From intentional conversations with people at my school to physi-cally caring for children in the midst of their distress and vulnerability, the driving force behind all i do is Jesus. He is the driving force behind all orphan care. as i follow him, he gives me the desires of my heart, including caring for orphans, and i know he will guide me as i continue on this journey. He is the source of hope to all who are broken.

“each year, show Hope takes an average of 10 short-term trips to show Hope’s care centers in china and the Hands and Feet Project in Haiti to help people explore God’s heart for orphans through hands-on experience. Here are a few things this year’s trip participants had to say.

“i can’t control how the world responds to the orphan crisis, but i can control my response. and i can choose to step forward. i can choose to be vulnerable. and who knows, maybe it’s my own heart that gets healed in the process!”

- Heather D., June 2014 Sponsor Trip to China

“On this trip, God opened my eyes to all the countless ways we can get involved. There are so many opportunities in addition to adoption, and although we may not all be called to adopt, we are all called to do something to care for orphans.”

sponsors are truly the backbone of show Hope, providing a firm foundation on which to build a stable and effective minis-try. By giving every month, sponsors allow us to give children consistent care at our care centers and allow us to continu-ally provide adoption aid grants to help waiting children come into forever families. Faithful monthly giving also allows us to budget more effectively each year, and empowers our leadership to make long-term plans for the future. The ability to plan ahead has placed show Hope on the front lines of providing innovative and sustainable change for orphans worldwide.

in addition to our sponsors who give $35 or more per month, we have also developed the lifeHope sponsorship program for those who are able to make a bigger financial commitment. By giving $418 or more per month, lifeHope sponsors fully fund either an adoption grant or the medical care for a child every year. These sponsors then receive the name and additional information on the child they specifically helped.

margaret land chose to become a lifeHope sponsor after she participated in a short-term trip to maria’s Big House of Hope. land shares, “a few weeks ago, i received a picture of a little boy and his forever family with a note thanking me forhelping give them a grant, and telling me how excited they are about their son coming home soon. i can honestly say that was the best piece of mail i have ever received. Helping a waiting child come into a family is such a beautiful, practical way to show christ’s love.”

sponsors come in many forms; thousands of individuals, families, and churches join together through monthly giving to restore hope to orphans in distress. This year, thousands of people chose to lock arms with us in ministry by becoming show Hope sponsors and lifeHope sponsors when they attended concerts across the country. We are very thankful to the talented artists who used their platforms to advocate for the needs of vulnerable children by challenging their audiences to become show Hope sponsors.

show Hope had the privilege of joining steven curtis chapman in fifty cities on The Glorious Unfolding tour. With special guests laura story, Jason Gray, The afters, and Josh Wilson, the tour was a huge success and brought to thousands the truth that God is at work even in the darkness of our lives. We were also incredibly blessed to join andrew Peterson on his amazing Behold the Lamb of God tour over the christmas season. His continued partnership in this work has been such a gift and encouragement.

We are overjoyed to report that over TWO THOUsaND new sponsors joined the movement to care for orphans during these two tours! This means that fifteen more children eVerY mONTH will find their forever families.

The value of each show Hope sponsor simply cannot be overstated. This movement to care for orphans is moving for-ward because of the consistent, faithful partnership of donors who sacrificially give every month to help restore hope to orphans in distress. On behalf of the many children whose lives have been transformed because of your giving—thank you!

show Hope advocates are grassroots leaders who raise funds and awareness in their communities by utilizing their talents, gifts, and passions to speak up for orphans in distress.

They are donating birthdays, running marathons, and hosting garage sales… all to restore the HOPe of a family to waiting children around the world. above all, our advocates are a voice for the fatherless.

Do you want to become an advocate, but aren’t sure where to begin? We have developed four unique advocate toolkits that will help make your planning easy.

Change for orphans Children’s Curriculum: Our curriculum will take children through the global nature of the orphan crisis, and provide concrete ways they can care for orphans right now! Dress Down for hope: Go casual in your work place or school to benefit show Hope! allow your office staff or student body the opportunity to dress casually each day they make a donation to your campaign.

Forever Family Fun Night: Host a night of family fun at your home, church, or school to benefit show Hope. choose a simple menu, play games, or show your favorite family movie. Not only will you be raising funds to help vulnerable children, but you will also be providing a space for families in your community to spend quality time together!

Restore hope Clothing Swap: Gather your friends for a fun night of swapping clothes to benefit show Hope. each guest will bring a specified number of gently-used pieces to swap. all proceeds, collected either through an entrance fee or a per item charge, will go directly to restore the hope of a family to orphans in distress.

I love referencing 1 Corinthians 3:6, “I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but it was God who made it grow,” because I witness the reality of this truth daily in the ministry of Show Hope.

I am amazed at the generosity of givers like you who have played the part of Apollos, watering the tiny seeds of faith that are planted at the beginning of every adoption journey, or when a new child is brought under the care of one of Show Hope’s Care Centers, or when a new donor, sponsor, or partner joins the movement to care for orphans. When I think of the countless faithful who have planted seeds in faith, or have, in turn, watered those seeds or tiny saplings, I am struck by the notion of heavenly rewards. It is only two sentences later, in 1 Corinthians 3:8, that we find, “The one who plants and the one who waters have one purpose, and they will each be rewarded according to their own labor.” In my experience, most of our givers choose to give out of a desire to be a part of life-change for orphans, and not from the motivation of personal “return.” However, I have become more and more convinced that it is the heart and plan of God to bless each person for the part he or she plays in tending these blessed trees of life. It is our prayer for you that God will repay each of you for your generosity toward the work of this ministry by answering your own deep heart cries and prayers unto him. For there is no one more able to meet our hearts’ deepest desires than the One who made our hearts in the first place.

Lastly, Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians to remain focused on our particular role. It is easy to be distracted and want to do more, beyond the certain calls and purposes God has given for each of our lives. However, 1 Samuel 5:22 reminds us, “It is much better to obey than to sacrifice.” We don’t need to strive or push ourselves beyond what God

asks of us. Instead, we must simply and faithfully walk in obedience to that which he has called us.

In saying all of this, my desire is to encourage you, as a giver, to continue to join us in our relentless pursuit of restoring the hope of a family to orphans in distress. We can encourage you boldly, because we are confident in the Lord’s promise that He will reward you in even greater measure than you have given, when you are focused with a purposeful heart to care and obey as he directs your steps.

Watering Seeds of Faith

I have become more and more convinced that it is the heart and plan of God to bless each person for the part he or she plays in tending these blessed trees of life.
