How do I contact the teachers?
Please feel free to contact the teachers through the following means:
By email:
All teachers have an email account with the Hawaii State Department of
Education. This would be the preferred method of communication for
non-emergency situations.
By planner:
The planner provides a means of communication between home and
school. Notes and messages can be written in the Parent/Teacher
comment section. However, it is the responsibility of the student to
show the teacher the planner.
By Phone:
To avoid classroom disruptions, please leave a message with the office
(305-1289). This message will be relayed to the teachers and you will be
contacted at the teacher’s earliest convenience.
By Conference:
To set up an appointment with a teacher and/or the team, please contact
the grade level counselor to schedule an appointment (305-1289).
How should I label my assignments?
All assignments should be labeled with your name, class period and
date. The teacher will not be held responsible for assignments that are
not labeled properly.

What should I bring to class?
It is your responsibility to come to class prepared and ready to learn.
The following supplies are required for each class DAILY:
o Planner
o Pen
o Pencil
o Lined Paper
o Book (to read)
When should I use the planner?
The planner serves multiples purposes and therefore you are
REQUIRED to bring it to school every day. If a student misplaces or
defaces the planner, he/she will be required to purchase a new one.
o Homework:
Use the planner to record your homework and upcoming events.
o Communication:
The planner will be used as a communication tool for students, parents
and teachers. Notes and messages can be written in the Parent/Teacher
comment section. However, it is the responsibility of the student to
show the teacher the planner.
o Hall Pass:
Use the Hall Pass located in the back of the planner to leave class
during instructional time. Students are to get teacher approval
before leaving the classroom to go to the restroom or get a drink of
water.
To minimize disruptions that deter from learning, students are not
to leave the classroom within the first half of the period unless it is
an emergency. Students are to plan ahead and take care of these
activities before or after school, at morning break or at lunch.
How can I find out about my grades?
Students and parents should monitor classroom progress through the
JupiterGrades online grade book. Access the site at
https://jupitergrades.com/login or by clicking on the JupiterGrades link
on the Moanalua Middle School website.
Teachers will update JupiterGrades throughout the quarter.
Discrepancies reported on JupiterGrades should be brought to the
attention of the teacher.
What is advisory?
Advisory provides an opportunity for the team teachers to interact with
the students in a non-academic setting. It is in advisory that we work on
team building strategies as well as offer a time for academic support and
tutorial sessions.
Advisory takes place in the middle of the day during 7th
grade lunch.
The weekly schedule of activities is broken down by the day:
o Monday: SURF (Silent Uninterrupted Reading for Fun)
o Tuesday: Thinking Maps and Habits of Mind
o Wednesday: Seminar
o Thursday: Parent Communication/Study Hall
o Friday: TRIBES for Team Building
What will I be learning this year?
Math
The 8th
grade mathematical focus is on five major areas: (1) identifying
and approximating rational and irrational numbers, (2) analyzing and
solving linear equations, (3) understanding properties of symmetry and
solving problems related to volume, (4) investigating patterns of
association in bivariate data, and (5) defining, evaluating, and comparing
functions.
In addition to the Go Math workbook, students will develop their
mathematical understanding through various activities involving real-
world situations. Throughout the year, they will also familiarize
themselves with spreadsheets and other mathematical tools.
English
The 8th
grade Language Arts curriculum is based on Common Core State
Standards which emphasize grade-level proficiency in the areas of
reading (literature and informational), writing, language, and speaking &
listening. This year, we will be using materials such as the 8th grade
Springboard curriculum, other selected readings, and web-based
programs such as Wordly Wise Online and Achieve3000 to help the
students achieve their language arts goals as well as to help them to
prepare for college and career readiness.
Social Studies
The 8th grade Social Studies curriculum is focused on United States
history. Students will learn about people, events, and ideas from the
creation of the U.S. Constitution to the Civil War Reconstruction era.
We will cover some 100 years of history! Get ready to learn, research,
write, debate, and present this year.
Science
The 8th
grade curriculum introduces scientific investigation and inquiry
within the scope of astronomy, geology and oceanography.
Assignments will integrate various texts, articles, research projects and
experiments.
Art
The 8th
grade art course will provide students with opportunities to
further expand and advance their skills in 2D and 3D art, focusing on the
Elements and Principles of Design, and emphasizing self-expression and
