How to register for coursesEmployees of Cerebral Palsy Alliance

1. Managers book new employees into the compulsory orientation activities by completing the registration process on the website www.cerebralpasly.org.au/training

2. Employees will select induction activities essential to their role or beneficial to their continuing professional development needs. Employees may also be nominated by their manager to attend a particular course.

3. Once you receive your manager’s approval, complete the registration process on the website www.cerebralpasly.org.au/training

4. Course registration closes one (1) week before the course start date.

5. If the minimum number of participants is not reached, courses will be cancelled and participants and their managers will be notified.

6. Please note: Rural staff – please ensure you document all costs associated with attending the course and email your manager.

Registration confirmation• A registration confirmation will be forwarded to you and your manager.

• In the event of the activity being fully booked, you will be asked if you would like to be booked into the next available session scheduled.

• Every effort will be made to ensure equity of placement.

• An SMS reminder will be sent to you 2 days before the course.

Cancellation procedures• If you need to withdraw from a booked activity, a minimum of five (5) working days notice is required.

• Please complete the cancellation process on the Cerebral Palsy Alliance website www.cerebralpasly.org.au/training or respond to your SMS message.

• Withdrawal penalties will not apply where course withdrawals are due to extenuating circumstances, such as the applicant is on sick leave.

Course attendance• Participants are asked to adhere to the stipulated starting and finishing times of each training activity.

• If a course covers more than one (1) day participants must ensure that they are able to attend the total number of days.

• Please bring lunch with you. Only 30 minutes is allocated for lunch breaks and facilities are not always close.

• Lunch will be provided at all ‘Corporate Orientation’ sessions and where otherwise stated.

• Tea and coffee is provided.

• You will sign an attendance sheet, which will be used to maintain up-to-date records regarding all the activities you attend.

• Ensure you sign the attendance sheet for the training session. If you are attending two sessions in one day you must sign both attendance sheets. Any employee who does not sign the attendance sheet or does not attend the full duration of an activity will not be recorded as attending the session.

• Your manager will be informed of your failure to complete any activity.

• On request, Cerebral Palsy Alliance employees will receive a Certificate of Attendance when they terminate employment with Cerebral Palsy Alliance.

How to register for coursesRegistrations for individuals from other organisations

Cerebral Palsy Alliance welcomes individuals from other organisations to register and attend our courses (except where ‘Cerebral Palsy Alliance employees only’ is stated).

All you need to do is complete the registration process on the website www.cerebralpasly.org.au/training

Registration confirmationConfirmation of registration will be given on receipt of registration and full payment of course costs.

Course registration closes one (1) week before the course start date.

Cancellation proceduresA cancellation fee (15%) will apply to cover administration costs. We cannot refund your course fee unless we receive at least five (5) working days notice.

Courses will be cancelled and participants notified if the minimum number of participants is not reached. Participants will receive a full refund.

Nationally Recognised Courses and Traineeships

Cerebral Palsy Alliance is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). As an RTO, Cerebral Palsy Alliance delivers the following nationally recognised qualifications:

• HLT32412 Certificate III in Allied Health Assistance

• We can also offer individual units of competency (UOC) on request

Qualification deliveryThe qualifications are designed for people currently working in the community sector. The mode of delivery for each qualification is a combination of face to face training, workplace and individual learning.

For qualifications delivered at Cerebral Palsy Alliance, individuals from all organisations are welcome. Please see details on the following pages.

Training Alliance can deliver a qualification customised for other organisations at your venue for groups of ten (10) or more participants.

We also deliver pre-vocational programs in nationally recognised qualifications at different locations throughout the year.

Course costsFor employees of Cerebral Palsy Alliance the cost of the course is covered by the organisation. Eligible participants will be signed onto a traineeship through the Australian Apprenticeships Centre, which is arranged by the Training Alliance team.

For employees of other organisations please contact Training Alliance. Assistance will be given on potential sources of government funding to subsidise the cost of the training.

Target participantsThis course is designed for people with existing knowledge, skills and experience working in disability services. It is for workers who carry out activities to maintain personal care and/ or other activities of daily living for people who are ageing.

PrerequisitesParticipants must have completed Certificate III or IV in Disability.

Delivery at Cerebral Palsy AllianceThe delivery of this course is a blend of face to face, workplace and individual learning. The face to face sessions are held at the Ryde Learning Centre.

In 2014, the pre-enrolment information and induction session for the course is on

The face to face training component of the learning consists of a maximum of nine (9) full day training sessions. The course calendar will be available at the induction session.

Target participantsThis course is designed for people working in a disability organisation under direct or regular supervision. It is for workers who carry out activities to maintain personal care and/ or other support activities of living, for people with a disability, related to an individualised plan.

At Cerebral Palsy Alliance Certificate III is the required minimum qualification for all Disability Support Staff.

Delivery at Cerebral Palsy AllianceThe delivery of this course is a blend of face to face, workplace and individual learning. The face to face sessions are held at the Ryde Learning Centre.

Certificate III in Disability Skills RecognitionCourse Code: CHC30408

Target participantsThis course is designed for people with existing knowledge, skills and experience working in disability services, and can demonstrate the following:

• minimum 2 years (full-time equivalent) experience working with clients in disability services

• experience providing support to people with a disability to: - Maintain personal care - Implement individualised plans - Achieve greater levels of independence, self reliance and community participation.

Delivery at Cerebral Palsy AllianceThe Certificate III in Disability Skills Recognition is via attendance at 3 x one day workshops. The format of the workshops will be group participation with individual assessment. Participants will complete self assessment checklists and provide evidence of their skills and knowledge by using examples from their workplace. Their manager will be required to complete statement of competences as supporting evidence. Essentially you are bringing with you your work-based experience, knowledge and skills to answer questions and reflect on scenarios.

Once the workshops are completed and your written answers from the workshops have been assessed, participants will be awarded either a:

• Certificate III in Disability qualification or

• Statement of attainment for units of competency from the Certificate III in Disability

In 2014 courses will be delivered on demand. Applications for Skills Recognition are by expression of interest. Applicants who meet the criteria will be offered a place.

Certificate IV in DisabilityCourse Code: CHC40312

Target participantsThis course is designed for people working in disability services that may work without direct supervision and may be required to supervise a limited number of direct care staff. These workers apply knowledge and skills gained through qualifications and/or previous experience to provide training and support to people with disabilities to enhance their ability to achieve greater levels of independence, self reliance and community participation.

At Cerebral Palsy Alliance, this program is recommended for Care Services staff Level D or E and above. Certificate III is the minimum qualification required.

Certificate IV in Disability Skills RecognitionCourse Code: CHC40312

Target participantsThis course is designed for people working in disability services and have a minimum of 5 years full-time career experience in the disability sector and be able to demonstrate the following:

• Industry experience

• Skills and knowledge gained through providing support to people with a disability to enhance their ability to achieve greater levels of independence, self reliance and community participation.

• Role responsibility to report to service managers and liaise with health professionals and other agencies.

• Capacity to work without direct supervision and be required to supervise and/or coordinate a limited number of lower-classified workers.

• Facilitation of client’s individualised plans or development of program plans

People who have completed Certificate III in Disability through skills recognition are not eligible.

Delivery at Cerebral Palsy AllianceThe Certificate IV in Disability Skills Recognition is via attendance at 3 x one day workshops. The format of the workshops will be group participation and assessment. While the process is group-based the evidence created is individual. Participants will also complete portfolios of evidence and require their manager to complete statement of competences as supporting evidence. Essentially you are bringing with you your work-based experience, knowledge and skills to demonstrate your competence in each of the units of competency listed.

Once the workshops are completed and your portfolio of evidence has been assessed, participants will be awarded either a:

• Certificate III in Disability qualification or

• Statement of attainment for units of competency from the Certificate IV in Disability

Accidental counsellor

Target audienceThis course is recommended for any worker, who may find themselves supporting clients who may be distressed or angry, facing challenges and/or requiring assistance. Workers can find themselves in the role of the ‘accidental counsellor’, without the benefit of professional qualifications, training and support.

Activity informationThis two (2) day course aims to equip workers with both a theoretical and practical understanding of the accidental counselling role and with opportunities to learn more about counselling models, as well as to develop and apply basic counselling skills and techniques.”

This course introduces a couple of simple counselling models and a range of basic counselling techniques and skills. The course includes opportunities for participants to develop and refine core skills such as assessment, active listening, engagement and rapport building, questioning, structuring and summarising and referral.

It is designed to appeal to adult learners who bring a wealth of related knowledge and skills to draw from and to provide opportunities to participate in a range of experiential and learning activities, appealing to different learning styles.

An introduction to aquatic therapy for therapists working with people with a disability

Target audienceThis course is designed to support physiotherapists and exercise physiologists to develop their assessment, clinical reasoning and intervention skills in working with people with disabilities within the aquatic environment. This course will enable therapists to use aquatic therapy as another medium in which their clients can achieve their goals.

Activity informationThis learning activity aims to provide the participant with knowledge and skills in aquatic therapy (hydrotherapy). Current research and evidence of best practice in planning and implementing a strength, fitness or skill development program for an individual or group will be presented. This course aims at assisting therapists working with clients of all ages with an emphasis on the paediatric population.

A combination of formats including formal teaching, small group work and practical sessions within the pool are used to enhance the learning of participants.

Activity informationAssistive technology such as switches, speech generating devices, software and environmental control systems have the potential to enhance an individual’s participation in daily activities. Activity informationThis learning activity highlights the importance of good bowel habits for those with a physical disability. It provides strategies for increasing fibre in the diet and the prevention of constipation. Included in this workshop is a practical demonstration as well as practise of enema and suppository administration.

AssessmentAn assessment will be conducted during the session. This assessment is competency based and involves the participant demonstrating their ability to administer a suppository and an enema in a simulated environment.

Achievement of competency allows the participant to administer suppositories and enemas to clients in the workplace. For Cerebral Palsy Alliance employees, reassessment of this skill is conducted every year.

Building futures leadership group: Emerging leader’s program

(CEREBRAL PALSY ALLIANCE EMPLOYEES ONLY)

Target audienceThis leadership program, unlike the other Leadership forums offered at Cerebral Palsy Alliance, is offered as a 12 month professional development program to staff who may not be in a senior role or management position, but who may have a desire to further develop their leadership skills.

This ‘Emerging leaders program’ is open to all employees at all levels (except the Senior Executive). Managers are invited to nominate one (1) direct report in their team who meets the eligibility criteria for the program. The Talent Review Committee will select and invite 10-12 employees to participate in the program each year.

Activity informationThis program offers participants the following:

• An opportunity to learn more about the organisation by networking and developing relationships with other staff who work in different roles and services

• An opportunity to attend a monthly leadership forum with the other participants and guest speakers

• An opportunity for regular mentoring from a senior manager • An opportunity to receive support to set and implement a leadership

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) annual refresher

Activity information

CPR covers the skills and knowledge required to perform CPR in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines.

This course involves a demonstration and practical experience in the provision of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Participants are required to demonstrate their knowledge through scenarios in a simulated environment and complete written assessment tasks

AssessmentCompetency in CPR is assessed on the day. All participants deemed competent in CPR are issued a certificate which is valid for 12 months and must be renewed prior to expiration.

Cerebral Palsy: A better understanding

Activity informationThe aim of this two (2) day learning activity is to enable participants to approach and manage professional and personal conflict in a practical and empowering way. Participants will explore their reactions and approach to conflict and will be introduced to the value of various techniques including a win-win approach, appropriate assertiveness, negotiation and mediation. The first day and a half is open to all participants and the conflict resolution process will be practiced through participation, group work and discussion. The last half day is for team leaders, supervisors and managers to explore the use of coaching in empowering staff and to assist in conflict resolution.

Activity informationThis 1.5 day course includes training on recruitment and managing performance.

Recruitment: Cerebral Palsy Alliance recognises that ultimately it can only achieve its mission and key objectives and goals through recruiting employees with the appropriate competencies. Issues such as employment decisions effecting both external and internal applications, preparing for and managing interviews, health, reference and probity checks and when and how to contact successful and unsuccessful candidates will be discussed.

Managing Performance: Participants receive tips on how to make a performance appraisal a positive experience for managers and employees, how to use the various performance appraisal forms effectively and how to develop formal development and career plans with your employees. The session focuses on the management styles team leaders and managers should use when monitoring and assessing employees’ performance. The ‘do’s and don’ts’ around informal feedback and formal counselling and disciplinary meetings are also covered. Team leaders and managers will work through the various processes which encompass the principles of natural justice and procedural fairness.

First Aid Certificate - Fastrack

Target audienceA current First Aid Certificate is essential for employees in a support role.

At Cerebral Palsy Alliance, this course is compulsory for staff employed in disability support or hydrotherapy role. Some nominated corporate support staff are also required to hold this certificate.

Activity informationThis learning activity covers all aspects of first aid and is delivered with a disability focus. This activity is run in a Fastrack model over one full day. Participants will be required to engage in demonstration activities and hands on participation in order to be found competent in this activity.

AssessmentA CPR assessment task and practical (scenario based) assessment task are conducted during the course. Participants are also required to complete written assessments prior to arriving at the session. Successful completion of this learning activity entitles the participant to a certificate to practise first aid. This certificate is valid for three years and a refresher course must be undertaken prior to certificate expiry.

Prerequisites or pre-readingThere is compulsory pre-reading to this training, the book will be sent to you 10 days prior to the training session. A theory component of 40 multiple choice questions must to be completed prior to attending the course.

Hydrotherapy rescue award

Target audienceAt Cerebral Palsy Alliance this is a compulsory activity for employees who work in the hydrotherapy pool.

Activity informationThe Hydrotherapy Rescue Award is a Royal Life Saving course designed for individual facilities such as Cerebral Palsy Alliance’s hydrotherapy pool. The course is recognised as a minimum for all Cerebral Palsy Alliance employees working at the hydrotherapy pool. It will assist employees to develop the ability to identify potential accidents and prevent them from occurring. The course will also allow employees to develop the skills and knowledge needed to respond to emergencies without hesitation and provide the appropriate emergency care.

AssessmentThe learning activity uses formal and informal assessments which include practical rescues for a range of different aquatic environments, demonstration of Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation and management of suspected spinal injuries in shallow water.

CertificationOn successful completion candidates will receive: Hydrotherapy Rescue Award from Royal Life Saving.

Target audienceThis is a professional development opportunity for allied health professionals / educators and for families and carers of children or adults who have communication difficulties.

Activity informationThis course aims to provide information and training regarding the use of Key Word Sign and natural gesture for individuals who have difficulties with understanding and/ or communicating and the people they communicate with. Learning to Move: A goal oriented approach for infants

Target audienceThis course is designed to support physiotherapists and occupational therapists to develop assessment and intervention skills in working with infants with movement disorders or delayed development, and their families.

Activity informationThis learning activity aims to provide the participant with background knowledge about development of infants and a best practice framework for assessment and intervention. A combination of formats including lectures, small group work and video case studies will be used to enhance learning. Material covered includes:

Managing Projects

Target audienceThis is a professional development activity for people managing projects, or managing sections of a larger project.

Activity informationThis course covers a unit of competency from Certificate IV in Frontline Management (Undertake Project Work BSBPMG522A) and it addresses the management of projects including; the development of a project plan, administering and monitoring the project, finalising the project and reviewing the project to identify lessons learnt for application to future projects. The project management steps could also be applied to managing events.

Assessment Participants who elect to complete the nationally recognised unit of competency BSBPMG522A ‘Undertake project work’ will be assessed by undertaking a project and providing documented evidence of the project management steps as outlined above.

Prerequisites or pre-readingParticipants must have a current, or proposed, project (or event) to be able to demonstrate the application of their project management skills. All projects must have received executive approval prior to course attendance.

Mealtime assistance

Target audienceThis is a compulsory induction activity for all employees of Cerebral Palsy Alliance who assist clients with mealtimes or are present during times when a client is having something to eat or drink, including carers and allied health professionals.

Activity informationThis learning activity provides participants with information on enjoyable mealtimes, safe eating and drinking procedures and nutrition.

The course offers an introduction to basic anatomy and movements involved in swallowing using a range of multi-media examples. Strategies for monitoring a safe swallow, appropriate seating and positioning, assistance techniques, preparing and serving food, selecting mealtime equipment and possible risk management will also be discussed.

There will be opportunities to share experiences, participate in group discussion and practise preparing modified drinks and food.

Medication policy and practice

Target audienceThis learning activity is designed for employees involved in the assistance or administration of medications.

At Cerebral Palsy Alliance it is a compulsory activity for all employees in a disability support role.

Activity informationThis learning activity focuses on safety issues and best practice guidelines for employees assisting clients with managing their medications. Duty of Care and Health Department guidelines are highlighted, with an emphasis on safe practice issues, such as correct documentation, checking procedures and response to medication incidents.

AssessmentAll Cerebral Palsy Alliance employees are assessed by their manager in the workplace after course completion.

Cerebral Palsy Alliance employees must be deemed competent on two (2) separate occasions before being permitted to administer medicines unsupervised to Cerebral Palsy Alliance clients. Re-assessment of this skill is conducted every year.

Powered mobility plug-n-play

(CEREBRAL PALSY ALLIANCE EMPLOYEES ONLY)

Target audienceThis course is for occupational therapists and physiotherapists who work directly with powered mobility (PM) and are interested in gaining a deeper understanding of the practical and technical aspects of trialling PM with their clients.

At Cerebral Palsy Alliance this course is a compulsory learning activity for occupational therapists and physiotherapists.

Activity information Participants will gain hands-on experience in connecting alternate controls, setting up a powered wheelchair for a client, troubleshooting and programming. There will be time to use alternate controls and to discuss choice of these in relation to case examples.

This session will be run in conjunction with equipment suppliers, allowing participants the opportunity to examine the options offered by several different suppliers, in an informal but focused trade display session.

AssessmentThere is no formal assessment as part of this learning activity. It is an information sharing and gathering session.

Activity informationThis learning activity is designed to refresh and enhance the knowledge of Cerebral Palsy Alliance policies and procedures in regards to:

• fire and other emergencies • manual handling • WHS • documentation • medication policy and practice • health and infection control • transporting • personal care • tube feeding (if required) • bowel care (if required)

Successful completion of this learning activity is required to allow the participant to continue to work effectively and safely at their work site.

Assessment Participants will be required to complete an assessment and demonstrate their competence in tube feeding and bowel care (if applicable) to the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) or Health Educator. Further assessment will be conducted annually by managers or CNS’s at worksites.

Target audienceThis is a compulsory refresher activity for House Managers, CAS Managers, Packforce Managers and Senior support workers (Level E and above) of Cerebral Palsy Alliance who are responsible for the supervision and assessment of employees in disability support roles.

Activity informationThis learning activity is designed to refresh managers and enhance their knowledge of Cerebral Palsy Alliance policies and procedures in regards to health, safety and personal care practices.

This activity will equip managers to effectively and safely support their staff in the workplace. Successful completion of this learning activity is required to allow the participant to continue to assess individual employees via annual assessments at the work site.

Target audienceA current CPR certificate is compulsory for all Registered Nurses, Enrolled Nurses and Aquability staff and must be renewed every 12 months.

Activity informationThis course involves a demonstration and practical experience in providing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and oxygen therapy. Participants are also required to demonstrate their knowledge gained through scenarios in a simulated environment.

AssessmentCompetency in CPR and Oxyviva is assessed on the day. Participants are also required to complete written and practical (scenario) based assessment tasks. All participants deemed competent in CPR are issued with a certificate which is valid for 12 months and must be renewed prior to expiration.

Prerequisites or pre-readingParticipants must have a current Apply First Aid Certificate.

A work book is sent out 10 days prior to the training session and 12 multiple choice questions need to be completed by the student prior to attending the practical course.

Activity informationThe eLearning component of this course aims to provide participants with the theoretical basis for seating and positioning intervention.

The workshop component of this course aims to provide participants with a practical approach to seating and positioning assessment and intervention by offering opportunities to refine clinical reasoning and prescription skills. This is accomplished through a hands-on workshop assisted by volunteers who have physical disabilities and is facilitated by client technology services seating consultants.

AssessmentThe eLearning module includes formal assessment. The practical workshop includes both formal and informal assessment, which involves group discussions, activities and conducting practical mat evaluation assessments.

Tube feeding (Meals through a tube)

Target audienceThis activity is for disability support staff and allied health professionals seeking to enhance their knowledge of tube feeding principles and achieve competence in tube feeding procedures.

At Cerebral Palsy Alliance this is a compulsory induction activity for all disability support employees involved in the care of an individual with a gastrostomy or jejunostomy feeding tube.

Activity informationThis learning activity covers all areas of tube feeding including administration of gastrostomy and jejunostomy feeding and information on infection control, monitoring and troubleshooting. Participants have the opportunity to practice procedures in a simulated environment.

AssessmentParticipants will be asked to demonstrate their tube feeding awareness to the facilitator in group activities. Cerebral Palsy Alliance employees need to buddy up in the workplace and practise their skills. Cerebral Palsy Alliance employees are required to arrange a time with a Cerebral Palsy Alliance CNS approximately one month after training to complete an assessment of their competence. Re-assessment of this skill is conducted every year.

Spectronics (a supplier of the program) holds fortnightly interactive online training sessions. Amanda has worked as a facilitator and manager in the community, aged care and disability sector. She has delivered case coordination and direct services as well as facilitated learning. This wide experience allows her to weave relevance and connections into the learning environment in a range of areas. Amanda delivers specialist and nationally recognised courses and is the program coordinator for Certificate III in Business Administration and Pre-Vocational programs. As program coordinator Amanda is responsible for the development, delivery, assessment and validation of training materials and providing support to participants. Amanda has a Diploma of Disability and Certificate IV in Training and Assessment and is passionate in her training to create an inclusive environment for all learners to participate.

Deb has over 25 years experience working in the disability sector, including various roles in direct care, service coordination, advocacy, planning and policy development. Deb has administered a range of innovative community based projects at local, regional and state wide level. Deb holds a Diploma of Disability and Certificate IV in Training and Assessment and draws on her experience to enhance her facilitation and training skills. Deb delivers CPA specialist courses and nationally recognised training, including coordination of Certificate III and IV in Disability. Deb is responsible for the design, development and delivery of training and assessment for these programs.

Elise has extensive experience working in disability organisations as a psychologist and manager. Elise joined Cerebral Palsy Alliance in 2001 and is currently General Manager for Organisational Development. She provides leadership and support for the implementation of a number of strategic initiatives of Cerebral Palsy Alliance. She has worked as a clinician primarily in paediatrics and has had extensive experience in training allied health staff. Jane has a strong interest in family centred practice and goal directed therapy to support people with disabilities to participate across the life domains.

Johanna Korkalainen – Consultant for Speech PathologyJohanna has experience working in the area of disability in Australia and overseas. Johanna provides consultancy, education and supervision/ mentoring to the speech pathologists at Cerebral Palsy Alliance. Johanna is passionate about many aspects of speech pathology and enjoys sharing her knowledge to support others in the learning and development arena.

Joan Bratel - Consultant for Psychology and Early EducationJoan provides consultancy, education and supervision/ mentoring to the psychologists and early educators at Cerebral Palsy Alliance. Joan has worked for over 25 years in the area of disability as a psychologist and manager of services for children and families. Joan has been involved in a number of research projects with the University of NSW and currently holds the position of adjunct Senior Lecturer with the School of Social Science and International Studies.

Judy has extensive experience as an educator within the community sector and the vocational education and training sector. Judy holds a Master of Education in Adult Education and Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. Prue Golland – Consultant for PhysiotherapyPrue provides consultancy education and supervision/ mentoring to the physiotherapists at Cerebral Palsy Alliance. She has worked as a clinical physiotherapist in the area of paediatric disability both in metropolitan and rural settings in Australia and overseas. Prue has a strong passion for sharing her knowledge and experiences to assist others in supporting people with cerebral palsy throughout their life. She maintains a strong interest in the care of people with cerebral palsy in developing countries and is currently undertaking a Master of Public Health with a special interest in development.
