Online registration will be available as from September 29, 2014

All registrations must be completed online. Payment must be received in the

PYP office by October 3rd in order to begin the program.

Register online at: www.westlakeacademy.org under “Headlines” starting on September 29.

• If you wish to “un-enroll” your child for a class please contact the After School Activities Coordinator immediately.

• Once final rosters are made for activities, you will be responsible for payment. • Classes will not be prorated for beginning late or missing classes. • No refunds will be given once activities begin.

        Grades:     G7-­‐12         Day:     Meetings   are   once   a   week,   rotating   days   to   accommodate  

other  activities    Did   you   know   that   colleges   and   universities   aggressively   recruit   school   yearbook   editors?   It’s   true,   scholarship   and  admissions  committees  recognize  the  leadership  and  talents  of  yearbook  staffers  as  a  high-­‐value  investment.  Learn  the  useful  media  skills,   including  how  to   interview  for  news  &  feature  writing,  sports  photography,  editorial,  copy  editing,  creating  headline  “grabbers”,  graphic  design,  magazine  layout,  photo  editing,  organization  of  a  publication,  advertising  techniques  and  sales/distribution  of  a  major  publishing  project.    

      NEWSPAPER  -­‐  FREE     Instructor:     Tom  Cawthra  &  Kirsty  Wilkinson  

      Grades:   G7-­‐12         Day:   Meetings  are  once  a  week,  rotating  days  to  accommodate  other  activities           Get  the  inside  scoop  and  then  write  about  it!  Learn  journalism  skills  to  help  you  become  the           best  storyteller  by  working  on  the  school  newspaper.  Students  will  be  editors,  writers,    photographers,  business  managers  and  page  designers.  Additionally  students  will  have  opportunities  to  be  in  charge  of  special  projects  and  story   lines   throughout   the  year   for   sports,  art,  entertainment,  academics,  news,  government  and  technology.  

 

      BEGINNING  YOGA  -­‐  FREE     Instructor:     Joanna  Reynolds  

      Grades:   KG  –  G12         Day:   Mondays    3.15-­‐4.15pm        YOGA  is  the  bridge  between  your  MIND,  BODY,  and  SPIRIT.    With  YOGA,  you  will  not  only  develop  strength  and  flexibility  in   your  body,  but   you  will   also  deepen  your   focus  and   concentration,   and  become  more   stress   free   in   your  everyday  life.      You  will  need  to  bring  your  own  Yoga  mat.    All  levels  are  welcome.      Namaste!        

      MAD  SCIENTIST  CLUB  -­‐  $10     Instructor:     Lynette  Cardamone  &  Missy  DeMoss  

      Grades:   G2  –  G3         Day:   Mondays    3.15-­‐4.15pm              Spark   your   Mini   Mad   Scientist's   imagination,   through   our   fun   hands   on   Mad   Science  After   School  Club.   You   will  participate   in   a   range   of  experiments  that  will   have   you   questioning   and  wondering  why   and   how   things  work.    This  activity  has  a  Minimum/Maximum  Enrollment  of  5/20.

MATHEMATICS  SUPPLEMENTARY  COURSE  -­‐  $225   Instructor:     Arlington  Sunray  Chinese  School         Grades:     KG-­‐6  

Day:     Mondays  3.15-­‐4.15pm   (The   instructor  will  add  extra  meeting  days/classes  on  Fridays,  as  there  are  some  Mondays  that  there  will  be  no  after  school  classes)  

 The   practical   use   of   strong   mathematic   skills   can   be   seen   everywhere   from   the   classroom   to   the   boardroom.   Our  curriculum  is  designed  to  meet  the  needs  of  its  students,  either  as  a  supplement  to  concurrent  education  or  as  a  way  to  get   ahead   of   the   curve.   The   course   is   designed   for   those   who   seek   to   develop   stronger   abilities   in   math  concepts/application,   analytical/critical   thinking,   and   standardized   test   taking   skills.   This   activity   has   a  Minimum/Maximum  Enrollment  of  5/12.    

For  students  signing  up  for  both  Mathematics  Supplementary  and  Chinese  Mandarin  classes,  the  instructor  is  offering  a  $100  discount!        

      KICK  N’  KIDS  TAEKWONDO  -­‐  $120         Instructor:     Master  Salcido  of  Chang  Lee’s  Taekwondo         Grades:   KG  –  G12         Day:   Tuesdays  3.15-­‐4.15pm      The   Kick   n'   Kids   beginning   martial   arts   program   is   an   exciting,   fun,   and   rewarding   activity   designed   especially   for  children.    Self-­‐esteem,  confidence,  coordination  skills,  teamwork  and  physical  conditioning  are  key  elements  developed  through  the  class.    The  program  is  a  safe  way  to  teach  discipline,  techniques,  games  and  structure.    Learn  from  the  best!  This  activity  has  a  Minimum/Maximum  Enrollment  of  10/22.        Lisethe  Salcido  (4th  Dan  Black  Belt/Master  Instructor)    Master  Salcido  is  a  fourth  degree  Kukkiwon  certified  black  belt  and  has  a  Master's  Degree  in  Professional  Counseling  with  mayors  in  Sports  Psychology,  Family,  Group  dynamics,  Education  and  Sexuality.  Completed  Montessori  program  (2-­‐6  yrs  old)  and  Physical  Therapy  technician.      She  has  been  the  owner  and  operator  of  Chang  Lee's  TaeKwonDo  and  Sports  Center  in  Keller  since  September  of  2010.    Master  Salcido  is  an  instructor  as  well  as  a  TaeKwonDo  competitor  at  the  National  level.  Her  accomplishments  in  Taekwondo  include:    2014  USA  Cadet  National  Team  Staff  Assistant  4  times  Gold  Medalist  in  Sparring  at  National  Championships  5  times  Gold  Medalist  in  Poomse  at  National  Championships  2  times    Gold  Medalist  in  Sparring  at    US  Open  2  times  Gold  Medalist  in  Poomse  at  US  Open

        MINECRAFT  EDU  -­‐  $15             Instructors:   N.  Bauer,  M.  Doyal,  B.  Paquin,  S.  Ward           Grades:     G3  –  G4             Day/Time:   Tuesdays  3.15-­‐4.15pm              Students  in  grades  3rd  -­‐5th  have  the  opportunity  to  learn  using  MineCraftEdu.  Discover  new  worlds  as  you  explore  side-­‐by-­‐side  with  your  friends  and  classmates  in  a  wondrous  world  of  long  ago.    Cost  covers  a  snack  and  what  ever  is  left  over,  will  make  a  donation  to  Kiva  (www.kiva.org). This  activity  has  a  Minimum/Maximum  Enrollment  of  5/20

 

 

      CLUB  DE  ESPAÑOL  (FOR  NATIVE  SPEAKERS)  -­‐  $15         Instructor:     Señora  Katina         Grades:     G1-­‐3  (native  Spanish  speakers)         Day/Time:   Tuesdays  3.15-­‐3.50pm           Señora  Katina  is  inviting  1-­‐  3  grade  Native  Spanish  Speakers  to  enjoy  "El  Club  de  Español"  .  Soon,  you  will  be  able  to  read  and  write  any  message  in  Spanish.  You  must  be  fluent  in  Spanish  to  be  part  of  "El  Club  de  Español"      

 

        DIY  CLUB  -­‐  $30           Instructor:     Profe  Ragnow           Grades:     G8  &  9           Day:     Tuesdays  3.15-­‐4.15pm    Calling  all  DIY'ers!  Let's  learn  to  create  some  fun  projects  together.  You  do  not  have  to  be  artistic  or  creative  to  be  a  DIY  champ!  Bring  your  ideas  and  join  our  group!    This  activity  has  a  Minimum/Maximum  Enrollment  of  5/10.

LITTLE  MUSICMAKER:  PIANO,  GUITAR  &  MUSIC  THEORY  –  FOCUS  ON  GUITAR  &  PIANO:  $175           Instructor:   Little  Musicmaker           Grades:     KG  –  G3           Day:     Tuesdays  3.15-­‐4.15pm      Let’s  Make  Music!  High   energy,   hands-­‐on   class   designed   to   introduce   music   theory,   music   appreciation,   guitar   and   piano  concepts.     Participants  will   learn   to   read  music   and  play   beginning   pieces   on   a   piano   keyboard   and   guitar.  All   classes  encourage  creativity,  composing  and  improvising  and  promote  active  participation.    Activities  like  music  theory  yoga  on  a  giant  music  staff  are  sure  to  keep  your  child  engaged  while  learning!      This   activity   requires   a   minimum   enrollment   of   6   students.  After   thirteen   years   of   providing   early   childhood   music  education  in  classrooms,  we  have  tried-­‐and-­‐true  methods  that  make  us  a  specialist  in  the  field  of  early  childhood  music  programs.  Come  see  what  we  are  all  about!    

 

      CHINESE  (MANDARIN)  -­‐  $240         Instructor:     Language  and  Literature  Offered  by  Arlington  Sunray  Chinese  School         Grades:     KG-­‐G5  and  G6-­‐12         Day:     Tuesdays  3.15-­‐4.15pm    The  Chinese   language   is   one   that   possesses   both   a   rich   cultural   history   and  modern  practicality   as   organizations   and  firms  are  expanding  their  global  presence.  Consequently,  there  is  an  increasing  demand  to  master  other  languages  such  as  Mandarin  Chinese.  The  Arlington  Sunray  Mandarin  Chinese  course  is  designed  for  those  who  seek  to  develop  stronger  abilities  in  reading,  writing,  or  speaking  the  Chinese  language.  Classes  are  taught  after  school  by  the  faculty  members  of  the   Arlington   Sunray   Chinese   School,   which   has   been   had   a   proven   track   record   of   academic   excellence   and  effectiveness  for  over  30  years  in  the  DFW  area.  This  activity  has  a  Minimum/Maximum  Enrollment  of  5/12.

          LA  ACADEMIA  (SPANISH)  –  $210         Instructor:     Offered  by  La  Academia  Spanish  Immersion  teachers         Grades:     KG-­‐G5  and  G6-­‐12         Day:     Wednesdays  3.15-­‐4.15pm    Are  your  kids  speaking  Spanish?    La  Academia  specializes  in  helping  students  utilize  their  vocabulary  and  grammar  skills  for  conversation  to  achieve  fluency.    From  Kinder  to  Senior,  our  classes  will  have  the  students  speaking  Spanish  from  day  one.    This  activity  has  a  Minimum  Enrollment  of  5.

            BODIES  IN  MOTION  –  $10           Instructor:     Amanda  Bunch,  Patrice  Moon  &  Katherine  Price           Grades:     G4  &  5           Day:       Thursdays  3.15-­‐4.15pm    Students  will  use  their  motor  and  social  skills  to  play  cooperative  games.  A  maximum  of  30  students  can  join  us  to  make  sure  everyone  is  able  to  participate.  A  fee  of  $10  is  asked  for  snacks  and  water.  Grades  4  and  5  are  welcome.  Students  will  meet  in  the  G5  classrooms  at  3:15  and  dismiss  at  the  front  entrance  at  4:15.        

G4  SCIENCE  CAMP  -­‐  $15   Instructor:  Kelsey  Hassell  (G10  student  –  Personal  Project)  supervised  by  Mrs  Taylor             Grade:  G4             Day:  Thursdays  3.15-­‐4.15pm    

All  new  after  school  science  camp  for  fourth  graders!  This  is  a  great  camp  for  students  who  take  interest  in  learning  more  advanced  science.  We  will  do  experiments,  activities  and  learn  about  the  world  around  us.  This  activity  has  a  Minimum/Maximum  Enrollment  of  4/20.  

         

                                KINDERGARTEN  ROOKIES  -­‐  $115                                       Instructor:     Coach  Barrows                                       Grades:     KG                                       Day:       Thursdays  3.15-­‐4.15pm    Rookies  super-­‐fun  program  that  is  a  great  opportunity  for  your  child  to  get  an  introduction  into,  team  sports  like  Soccer,  and  Basketball  in  a  small,  positive  environment.  This  is  a  multi-­‐sport  program  that  includes  skill  development  as  well  as  fun-­‐based  games  like  dodgeball,  kickball,  capture  the  flag.

      SCOTTISH  DANCING  -­‐  $15         Instructor:     Ms  Maru         Grades:   KG  –  G12           Day:   Thursdays  3.15-­‐4.15pm    Scottish  Dancing  is  connected  with  ancient  Scottish  folk  customs  and  is  well  known  for  its  sociable  and  fun  spirit  as  well  as   for   its   lively   music.     Scottish   Dancing   fosters   concentration,   coordination,   rhythm,   elegant   movements   and   good  posture.     Students  work   on   teamwork,   tolerance   and   spatial   awareness   skills.     The   present   form   of   dancing   evolved  through   the   centuries,   but   the   original   basic   steps   and   the   spirit   have   been   preserved.   This   activity   has   a  Minimum/Maximum  Enrollment  of  6/16.      

       

      YOUNG  MUSICIANS  -­‐  $5         Instructor:     Annie  Hans  (G12  student)         Grades:   G2-­‐5         Day:   Fridays  3.15-­‐4.15pm        This  music  club  is  full  of  interactive  musical  games,  including:  learning  how  to  conduct,  biographies  of  famous  musicians,  and  open  mic  stands.  This  music  club  is  not  your  average  music  class  since  new,  different  aspects  of  music  will  be  taught  and  games  will  be  played!  Annie  Hans,  a  passionate  musician  for  four  years  now,  will  be  teaching  this  club  for  her  CAS  hours.  Join  if  you  feel  like  music  is  a  part  of  you!  This  activity  has  a  Minimum/Maximum  Enrollment  of  5/20.            

      SIGN  LANGUAGE  CLUB  -­‐  $10         Instructor:     Tiffany  Tolnay         Grades:   KG-­‐G3         Day:   Fridays  3.15-­‐4.15pm             Learn   American   Sign   Language   and   fun   holiday   songs   to   share   with   family   members.   This   activity   has   a  Minimum/Maximum  Enrollment  of  5/12.

Westlake  Academy  After-­‐School  Activities  Program  Fall  2014  Procedures  and  Guidelines    

General  Procedures  and  Guidelines      By  registering  your  child(ren)  in  the  After  School  Activities  program  you  are  agreeing  to  the  following  general  procedures,  guidelines,  pickup  procedures  and  times  of  the  activities  that  your  child(ren)  is/are  registered  for.      1. The  Westlake   Academy   after-­‐school   activities   program   is   available   to   any   student   attending  Westlake   Academy.    

Participation  in  the  program  is  completely  voluntary.    

2. After-­‐school   activities   programs   will   be   taught   in   the   school’s   classrooms   on   weekdays   only   after   3:15pm.   All  scheduling   is   subject   to   approval   of   the   Principals   and   the  Activities   Coordinator.    No   activities  will   be   scheduled  during  academic  classes.  

 3. These   guidelines   apply   only   to   after-­‐school   activities   conducted   on   the   Westlake   Academy   campus.     Westlake  

Academy  is  not  responsible  for  after-­‐school  activities  conducted  off  campus.    

4. The  school’s  Activities  Coordinator  will  facilitate  the  scheduling  process.    

5. Private   instructors  will   abide  by   school   policies   and   regulations;   they   are   responsible   to   the   supervising  Activities  Coordinator  and  the  Principals.  

 

6. Parents  will  submit  an  online  registration  form  in  order  to  enroll.    

7. Parents  will  bear  the  costs  related  to  all  instructional  materials  (books,  music,  art  supplies,  etc.).    

8. Students  are  expected   to  notify   the  private   instructor  at   least  24  hours   in  advance  of  missing  a  scheduled   lesson.    The  instructor  and/or  Activities  Coordinator  may  provide  makeup  lessons  subject  to  agreement  with  the  student  and  parents.  

 

9. Students   may   stop   taking   lessons   at   anytime;   however,   the   refunding   of   fees   is   solely   at   the   discretion   of   the  instructor.    A  student  may  be  dropped  by  an   instructor,  with  approval  of   the  Principals,   for  excessive  absences  or  unacceptable  behavior.  

 

10. Students  will  be  expected  to  follow  the  same  behavior  expectations  as  during  the  school  day.    If  problems  arise,  the  Activities   Coordinator   will   be   notified   and   those   issues   will   be   addressed   and   dealt   with   according   to  Westlake  Academy  policies.    After  school  activities  are  a  privilege-­‐  disruptive  student  behavior  will  not  be  tolerated.      

 11.  Students  that  are  not  registered  in  the  After-­‐School  Activities  Program  are  not  permitted  to  stay  after  school  to  wait  

with  their  sibling  that  is  registered.      

Pick-­‐up  Procedures  Agreement:   At  Westlake  Academy,  the  safety  and  well  being  of  our  students  is  of  the  utmost  importance.    Therefore,  in  order  to  better  execute  after-­‐school  activity  dismissal,  the  following  procedures  must  be  followed  without  exception.    For  activities  taking  place  in  the  PYP,  MYP,  Performance  Hall,  Portables  or  outdoors:  When  the  activity  is  over,  students  are  to  be  escorted  to  the  Primary  Pick-­‐up  location  by  the  instructor.    Students  will  then  be  released  to  parent/guardian.      Students  not  registered  for  a  particular  activity  will  not  be  allowed  to  wait  with  their  sibling.    Instructors  are  only  responsible  for  students  that  are  registered  for  their  activity.
