THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPBLACKSMITHS’ COMPETITION

invites you to join us for the 35th Annual Championship, held

during the Calgary Stampede - The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth

2014 marks a dramatic change in the competitions

prizelist and format. In order to facilitate time and

space constraints and keep the contest on Stampede

Park, there had to be some program contraction.

Gone are the Four Man Team Draft Horseshoeing,

the Two Man Forging and Metal Art classes. This

allows us to have three speed classes, additional

opportunities for point accumulation; maintaining

our live shoeing classes and keeping the focus on the

horses foot. All forging specimens will be judged to a

hoof model provided on game day. Strikers are optional

in all forging classes with limited responsibilities.

Strikers are allowed to run the fire, pass tools, use the

sledgehammer, but not rasp or use a wire brush.

There is a major change to the way the specimens

are judged this year. All shoes will be sight judged

and placed in order from 1st to 60th. First place will

be awarded 20 pts; second place will be awarded 19

pts; and so on until 20th place is awarded 1 pt. This

The WCBC is excited to welcome two accomplished blacksmiths to judge this years competition.

Bob Pethick - USA and Gary Darlow - United Kingdom

will allow for a much quicker result appearance

and more opportunities to accumulate points for

more competitors. Upon reaching the TOP TEN, all

accumulated points will be removed and the Semi-

Finals start on an even playing field. Points will be

awarded for the semi-final and final to continue the

score to determine our World Champion. This new

format has evolved from taking competitor input,

working with program challenges, and is designed to

have the fairest result emerge in the crowning of a true

individual World Champion.

Entries are limited to sixty competitors and the

deadline is May 1, 2014. All past champions and

WCBC sponsored entries have priority, with the

remaining spots open to national champions, regional

champions, or corporate sponsored entries.

The 35th edition of the World Championship

Blacksmiths’ Competition on Stampede Park will prove

itself to be historic.
