Setting the context :

Page 9: 2014 YNPS MTP1 (P's Briefing to P5&6) Version 1.0

“The PSLE serves as a checkpoint of a student's mastery of primary-level subjects and identifies suitable pathways for secondary education, said MOE. The highest and lowest aggregate scores of the cohort are not necessary for this purpose and will not feature in the results slip from this year. “

Embracing our heritage…Yu Neng Primary School started off as a Chinese school in 1935 at Upper Changi.

The school later moved to and started operations in Bedok North St 3 in Jan 1982. It changed its status from an aided school to a government school and was renamed as ‘Yu Neng Primary School’. The school was officially declared opened by Tuan Saidi Haji Shariff on 12 July 1984.

Holistic Assessment - development of the whole child Holistic Assessment doesn’t mean no more Exams. Pupils will be assessed based on bite-sized performance tasks assigned to them during the course of the year. These tasks aim to assess the mastery level of each pupil and allow our teachers to check for misconceptions and provide feedback for pupils learning.

of pupils amongst their peers. Places pupils into different courses according

to their academic ability Enables posting to secondary schools by merit

and as far as possible, into a school of their choice.

32

Are they raw

scores?

What is PSLE Aggregate Score?

It is a sum of scores.

What are these scores?

Page 33: 2014 YNPS MTP1 (P's Briefing to P5&6) Version 1.0

33

The PSLE Aggregate Score

• incorporates performance of pupils in all 4 subjects

• allows pupils to be ranked fairly

Page 34: 2014 YNPS MTP1 (P's Briefing to P5&6) Version 1.0

34

Can raw scores be used?

NO !

Page 35: 2014 YNPS MTP1 (P's Briefing to P5&6) Version 1.0

35

Why Not?

• Different subjects have different levels of difficulty

• So are the spread of marks from the average mark, i.e. the standard deviation (spread = standard deviation)

A need for standardisation of the raw scores

Transformed Score or T-Score

Page 40: 2014 YNPS MTP1 (P's Briefing to P5&6) Version 1.0

40

What is T-Score?

• It gives the relative position of a pupil’s performance as compared to the performance of all the other pupils in that subject

• The raw mark obtained in the exam only shows how good the pupil is in that subject, not how good he is as compared to others

Page 41: 2014 YNPS MTP1 (P's Briefing to P5&6) Version 1.0

41

How is T-Score calculated for each subject?

• Pupil’s mark (X) in exam = 50.0• Average mark (Y) scored by all pupils =

68.0• Spread of marks (Z) around the average

mark (Y) = 14.0T = 50 + 10 (50 - 68.0)

14.0= 37.14

How is the Aggregate Scorecalculated?

By adding the T-Scores ofthe 4 subjects

T-SCORES & GRADES:

Is it possible for a pupil with 3A* and 1A to be ranked lower than another pupil who has only 1A* and 3As?Yes, it is possible

What about Subject-based Banding?

• Pupils taking foundation subjects and other combinations, other than 4 standard subjects, are not shortchanged.• The raw mark obtained in the exam by these pupils are also converted to T-score

T-ScoreFEL EL

As foundation subjects are generally less demanding, pupils are required to score a higher score than a standard subject in order to have a same T-score as a standard pupil. In this case, the T-Score converts average mark of each subject to a common score of 50 points.

• From 2014, Sec 1 students in the Normal (Academic) and Normal (Technical) stream at 12 secondary schools will be able to take certain subjects at a higher level if they had done well for it at the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE).

• Under this pilot scheme, students who scored an A or an A* for a subject at the PSLE will be able to take it at the Express level, whether they are in the Normal (Academic) or Normal (Technical) streams. New Normal (Technical) students will also be able to take subjects at the Normal (Academic) level if they scored B,C or 1 in a Foundation subject at the PSLE.

• Currently, only Normal stream students in the upper secondary level are allowed to take subjects at a higher level.

• The MOE said that this scheme is being implemented as part of efforts to introduce greater flexibility in subject offering at lower secondary levels, so as to better cater to the strengths of students in different subjects. The ministry hopes to implement this in all secondary schools by 2018.

• The 12 secondary schools involved in the pilot next year are: Ang Mo Kio Secondary, Bedok Green Secondary, CHIJ St. Joseph's Convent, CHIJ St. Theresa's Convent, Jurong Secondary, Jurong West Secondary, Pei Hwa Secondary, Ping Yi Secondary, Presbyterian High, Queenstown Secondary, St. Patrick's and Unity Secondary.

CCA Policy

Objectives of Co-curricular Activities (CCAs):

• CCAs are an integral part of our students’ holistic, well-rounded education.

• They aim to build character, inculcate values and develop leadership amongst our pupils as they learn, collaborate and interact with one another as well as the community at large.

Page 54: 2014 YNPS MTP1 (P's Briefing to P5&6) Version 1.0

CCA Policy• All CCAs are official school activities and all

pupils from P3 to P6 are to participate in at least one CCA.

• Pupils need to achieve a minimum attendance rate of 75% in the CCA. Pupils will be awarded badges (CCA Star) yearly if they attain 90% annual attendance rate.

• Pupils need to produce a medical certificate or a letter from parent/guardian stating reason(s) for absence from the scheduled CCA day/events.

Page 55: 2014 YNPS MTP1 (P's Briefing to P5&6) Version 1.0

CCA Policy• Pupils should not change their CCA as they need

time to build knowledge and master their skills. • It is important that teamwork and leadership are

honed in the same CCAs with their peers as one grows and develops in his skills and leadership in the CCA concerned.

• Therefore, requests for a change of CCA are only allowed at the end of P3 after pupils have tried out their CCAs for 1 semester. Changing of CCAs is not allowed from P4 to P6, unless due to very valid reasons e.g. medical conditions.

Page 56: 2014 YNPS MTP1 (P's Briefing to P5&6) Version 1.0

CCA POLICY• Once per term, CCA training sessions will

include Social Emotional Learning lessons to provide opportunities to develop SEL competencies in our pupils. The 5 domains that are integral to the SEL lessons are Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Understanding of Others, Relationship Skills, Decision-making Skills

• All CCA groups will perform at least 1 Community Involvement Programme in a year.

WHAT ROLE CAN I PLAY TO SUPPORT MY CHILD?

Page 63: 2014 YNPS MTP1 (P's Briefing to P5&6) Version 1.0

Please Note:

• Medical Certificates ARE required to account for absence from a test or exam.

• PSLE: Prelim Exam results, as well as past-year trend results, will be taken into consideration if the child did not sit for a particular subject during PSLE

• DO NOT take your child out during official school term without a valid reason. School has planned several important enrichment programmes after SA2/PSLE

Page 64: 2014 YNPS MTP1 (P's Briefing to P5&6) Version 1.0

AS A PARENT COACH…

• Inspire your child to achieve high and his fullest potential. Aim for a high standard but realistic aggregate.

• Motivate your child by taking an active interest in your child’s academic progress as well as his CCA. Encourage and affirm him of every good progress step he has made.

• Be involved in his learning process by regularly checking on his work regularly to show that you (the parent) are taking an active interest in his studies. This will motivate him to try harder in his studies.

Page 65: 2014 YNPS MTP1 (P's Briefing to P5&6) Version 1.0

AS A PARENT COACH…

• Ensure that he/she does all his homework and complete them properly. Every assignment is considered important.

• Ensure that he/she attends school regularly. Skipping classes makes it difficult for him to catch up with his lessons later on.

• Don’t make excuses for them

Page 66: 2014 YNPS MTP1 (P's Briefing to P5&6) Version 1.0

AS A PARENT COACH…

• Monitor his/her daily after-school schedules/ lessons to ensure he/she is meaningfully and constructively engaged.

• Draw up a time-table with him/her.Monitor that he/she does not waste time playing computer games, watching too much televison programmes or chatting online with his friends or strangers.

Page 67: 2014 YNPS MTP1 (P's Briefing to P5&6) Version 1.0

AS A PARENT COACH…

Do not ‘pump’ your child with additional external enrichment courses to the detriment of her actual school work or to the extent that she misses out on the various programmes and experiences offered by the school

Page 68: 2014 YNPS MTP1 (P's Briefing to P5&6) Version 1.0

AS A PARENT COACH…

• Ensure that he/she has enough hours of sleep every day and takes his breakfast before coming to school.

• Communicate with your child’s teachers regularly whenever you need clarifications, assistance and feedback to better support your child in his learning.

• Important to recognise different perspectives – not just “My child’s right”. Do not jump to conclusions.

• Help look after/support our teachers & admin staff.

Page 69: 2014 YNPS MTP1 (P's Briefing to P5&6) Version 1.0
