Message from Reg MilleyBoard Chair

Our city has been growing at an astounding rate the past few years,

and at the heart of it all is the Arts District. Edmonton is a vital city

because of its diverse culture, thriving arts scene, and the passion

with which Edmontonians engage with their community. At the end of

my first year as Chair of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra & Francis

Winspear Centre for Music Board of Directors, I am filled with local

pride at the many ways in which the arts community continues to

grow in partnerships and inclusivity.

Investment in the arts happens in all forms. From the generous

funding provided by government, businesses, and individuals, to

the equally valuable contribution of time by the many performers,

patrons, and supporters of the arts, the ESO and Winspear family

is united by a simple belief in the importance of music in our lives.

In recent years, we have worked diligently toward making music

available to everyone in some form, whether through participation

or as an audience member, and our growing community outreach

programming reflects that goal. We also plan to bring more of the

community into our facility by expanding the building and adding

new performance and education space. We are delighted by the

outpouring of community and municipal support as we continue

to pursue the vision of a space dedicated to music, humming with

activity all day long, seven days a week.

Music Director Bill Eddins has extended his contract with the ESO,

remaining committed to the orchestra with the new educational

outreach focus, as well as in an artistic capacity; his dedication and

experience as a music educator has already led to many positive

changes throughout his decade–long tenure. It is inspiring to work

alongside Bill and the other artistic leaders who contribute to this

community, including our arts partners as well as the national and

international guests that our city hosts. Their work has been key in

Edmonton’s development as an artistic hub.

I wish to acknowledge the members of the Board who have served with

me this year, as well as previous Board Chair Steven LePoole, whose

dedication as Chair of the Winspear Completion Committee is of key

importance to that project. I especially thank exiting Directors Maria

David–Evans, Megan Evans, Travis Huckell, Kathy Knowles, Carolyn

Campbell and Leanne Krawchuk, for their dedication to the Board. I

would like to thank Bill Eddins and the ESO Musicians for their artistry,

and Annemarie Petrov and her team for the leadership that they offer

to both organizations and the arts community. I am looking forward

with great anticipation to what the next year will bring.

Message from Bill EddinsMusic Director

The ESO’s 2014/2015 season kicked off with an incredible bang

over the Labour Day weekend, as tens of thousands of Edmontonians

crowded into Churchill Square and then Kinsmen Park for classical

music in its most family–friendly form: nostalgic Disney hits and

the McDades performing Canadiana tunes under the blue Alberta

sky. Symphony in the City set the stage (as it were) for a

groundbreaking season.

Last season’s repertoire ranged from classical landmarks such

as Symphonie Fantastique to up–and–coming stars like JUNO

Award–winning Meaghan Smith. Our Robbins Pops series, always

dazzling, showed a powerfully dramatic side as Jack Everly presented

a multi–media performance that took our audience through the

turbulent 1940s. It was breathtaking. One of the biggest highlights

for me was Béla Bartók’s Miraculous Mandarin. As ever, our range

of guest artists ran the gamut from established performers to rising

newcomers – but also included no fewer than 12 members of our own

Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. As well, our commitment to present

works never before performed by this orchestra, including several

world or Canadian premieres, continued to delight our patrons.

Live at the Winspear grows every year – not just more concerts, but

forming new partnerships with local artists and cultural groups, and

reaching out to new audiences. On page 10 of this report, you can

read a message from Programming Manager Terry Wickham, and find

out about the new Live at the Winspear Summer Patio Series.

The ESO’s Education concerts and Symphony for Kids series have

grown side by side into remarkable programs. They are fun, they

are accessible, and they expose over 25,000 children every year to

a live classical music experience. The highlight of the season was a

theatrical production that we co–commissioned for Platypus Theatre,

a local arts partner regularly featured on family concerts.

I can’t tell you how excited I am about the Tommy Banks Institute

for Musical Creativity. It seemed like every time I turned around

last season there was another program: like the classrooms of

elementary students coming to the Winspear for the Science of

Sound, and our brand new Conducting Your Business geared toward

corporate leadership development. It’s easy to imagine the buzz of

activity that will go on all the time in the expanded Winspear just a

few years from now.

I would like to thank three exceptional musicians who retired from

our ranks at the end of the 2014/2015 season. Colin Ryan, Sheila

Laughton and Mikiko Kohjitani leant their considerable talents to the

ESO for many decades. Alissa Cheung resigned from the ESO at the

beginning of 2015. She dedicated her skills to her role as a violinist

and to Committee membership until joining the Bozzini String

Quartet, and we wish her the best in her exciting new venture. We

welcomed Laura Veeze and Frédéric Payant, who joined the ESO at

the beginning of the season.

Bill Eddins Music Director

Message from Annemarie PetrovExecutive Director

Six years ago the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and Francis

Winspear Centre for Music set out on a course that would

fundamentally change the future. While maintaining our commitment

to produce exceptional music experiences, we made daring changes

in restructuring the organizations and have instilled in every layer of

staff a desire for excellence and adaptability. Most importantly, we

began to voice something that has always been true: our patrons are

at the heart of everything we do. The Edmonton Arts District thrives

because we have a community that values the arts, and our mission

is to serve that community.

The changes we are making in our own organization are reflected in

the city at large. Despite a recession, construction is booming and

the downtown revitalization is well underway. Soon we will share

downtown with a new arena and Ice District, an LRT, and a dozen

new apartment towers and hotels that will bring thousands of people

to the area. Together with our arts partners, we are adapting to

these changes. The challenges posed by a struggling economy and

a rapidly growing, diverse population have given rise to innovative

ideas and cautious risk-taking. The past year saw unprecedented

quantities of collaborative activities, events and festivals, and we

have been proud to partner with many of our colleagues in the arts

and culture sectors.

The year started off in spectacular fashion with ATB Financial

Symphony in the City - a series of three outdoor concerts that took

place in Churchill Square and under the High Level Bridge, attracting

over 40,000 people. The events were made possible thanks to

the outstanding leadership of our sponsor, ATB Financial, and the

supporting vision by the City while Edmonton played host to the

2014 ITU World Triathlon Grand Final. With the World Triathlon’s

homebase in Hawrelak Park, Symphony Under the Sky took a hiatus

in 2014.

Our sincere gratitude extends to the three orders of government

who show their support every year through the Edmonton Arts

Council and the City of Edmonton, Alberta Foundation for the

Arts and Government of Alberta, Canada Council for the Arts and

Canadian Heritage. We are also thankful for the contributions made

by foundations and the significant support of our partners in the

business and arts communities. Most of all, we want to thank our

patrons. Everything that happens in this hall is because of the trust

you place in us.

To my colleague Bill Eddins and the musicians of the orchestra,

thank you for your outstanding artistry and inspired performances.

To our dedicated staff, and the volunteers who contribute their time

at the Winspear Centre and to our YONA-Sistema program, you are

the heartbeat of the organization. I also thank Marcia Mielke for her

leadership as Acting Director of Finance & Operations. I am privileged

to work with a committed Leadership team and a Board of Directors

whose unflagging efforts make an impact not just within our

organization, but throughout the community. It is our pleasure and

privilege to share the wonder of music with you.

Musician RetirementsThis season marked the final year for three of our musicians: Principal

Cellist Colin Ryan, Assistant Principal Cellist Sheila Laughton, and

Violist Mikiko Kohjitani.

Colin, Sheila and Mikiko have been a part of the ESO almost since its

inception. In their four decades with the symphony they enjoyed a

wonderful camaraderie with their sections, and they remember the

incredible change that came over the group when they first moved

into the Winspear Centre. Most of all, they loved making music

together. “I would close my eyes sometimes and it’s as if a veil would

part,” Colin said recently. “You’d feel like you were becoming part of

something from another world. Just to have been part of that sound is

something I’ll carry with me forever.”

In Memoriam: ESO Volunteer Liz TweddleDecember 21, 1936 – June 6, 2015

Liz Tweddle was a dear friend of the ESO and a dedicated volunteer

for fifteen years. She was enthusiastic, reliable, and always showed

up ready to brainstorm a new idea with the team. She involved

her daughter Nancy with the symphony, and for many years they

volunteered together. Knowing her love of music, her family whisked

her on a birthday trip to hear the ESO at Carnegie Hall; afterwards

she spoke with delight about their wonderful gift. She is deeply

missed by everyone at the Winspear Centre.

Bill Eddins first saw Béla Bartók’s The Miraculous Mandarin when he

was 14 years old. He describes the profound impact that the ballet

had on him as an aspiring musician: “I was completely overwhelmed

by this experience. It’s terrifying, it’s brilliant, it’s psychotic, it’s funny

at times. It’s important for me, once in my life, to give that kind of

experience to other people.” Decades later, the ESO made that dream

a reality.

The Miraculous Mandarin was composed like a film score, intended to

accompany a tale that is at times explicit and horrifyingly savage. The

content is so controversial that it was promptly banned across Europe.

Even though it is now known as one of the seminal works of early 20th

century expressionism, it is more often performed as a true ballet,

rather than the chilling pantomime it was intended to be.

Naturally, Bill was determined to make the ESO’s performance the

first of its kind in Canada, and set out to look for a cast. When he

learned that there was a world–renowned pantomime artist here in

Edmonton, he sent an email out to the whole ESO staff, looking for

more information. The response he received was surprising to say the

least. “You mean Zillur?” came several replies.

Zillur Rahman John has been part the Winspear's Guest Services team

for the past eight years, but until last April he had never performed

on the Winspear stage. With The Miraculous Mandarin, his incredible

talent could finally be shared with our ESO patrons. “When I first

heard this music, I didn’t understand anything. I thought, ‘It’s too

complicated’,” Zillur admitted, though he immediately agreed to the

performance. As rehearsals progressed, the complex layers of both

music and the psychology of the characters was slowly peeled away,

until Zillur was convinced of Bartók’s mastery. “There is something

hidden in the music. It’s really a wonderful and exciting piece of art.”

Before coming to Canada, Zillur had a thriving career in Bangladesh as

a non–verbal actor in mime, pantomime and interpretive movement.

His passion for pantomime ballet is driven by the same belief that

inspires many music–lovers: its power comes from the expression

of emotions and thoughts without the barriers of language and

inflection. “Realize how your body works, how your body speaks,”

Zillur says, “through your face, it touches people who are watching

and observing you as your character.”

The Miraculous Mandarin

ESO & Live at the WinspearPatron Attendance

The ESO performed the music of Led Zeppelin in two nights of

Rock'n'Roll–Classical fusion. Amplified with a full rock band and

screaming vocals, each concert began with an instrument petting

zoo in the lobby, supplied by Long & McQuade Musical Instruments

and Gibson Guitar. The event was so successful that we immediately

planned an “ESO Rocks” concert series for the 2015/2016 season

featuring the music of Pink Floyd and The Who. The night also began

a partnership with Long & McQuade that will lead to more pre–

concert lobby activities with instruments.

Symphony in the City

“One of the most visceral and sometimes harrowing half hours you will experience in a very long time.”

- Mark Morris, Edmonton Journal

Over the past three years, the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra

and Live at the Winspear have seen an overall increase in patron

attendance. The inaugural Symphony in the City festival was in 2014,

accounting for last season’s ESO Festival attendance increase.

Tommy Banks Institute for Musical CreativityVisionTo be the preeminent centre for imaginative and innovative

musical discovery

MissionTo deliver revolutionary musical arts enrichment programs that act

as catalysts for music discovery and exploration so that current and

future generations can experience the transformative power of music

on a personal level.

The Tommy Banks Institute for Musical Creativity is a catalyst for

inspiration. As the outreach and educational programming arm of

the Winspear Centre & ESO, the Banks Institute began by expanding

upon educational and outreach programs already underway and

now continues to launch new programs that serve all members of

the community, including many who traditionally face barriers to

participation. Its musical arts programs will constantly evolve to

remain relevant to what the community needs.

We are committed to taking a leadership role in discovering

and fostering connections between community organizations,

businesses, and arts groups, to build reciprocal partnerships that

make our Edmonton Region a stronger and more vibrant community,

and to reinforce the Winspear as a true Centre for Music and a home

for community groups.

Conducting Your BusinessConducting Your Business is a corporate team building program

designed by the Banks Institute and launched in June 2015. A

leadership group from ATB Financial joined the Edmonton Symphony

Orchestra on stage for the inaugural session, where they spent

an afternoon being led by conductor–consultant Rob Kapilow

through Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik; the many layers of this

masterpiece revealed the difference between good and great, both in

a composition and as a metaphor for business.

YONA–SistemaThe Youth Orchestra of Northern Alberta is a program for

underserved youth in our community where students receive musical

instruction and holistic social support at no cost to their families.

Through the development of a specialized skill and engagement in

a community of like-minded peers and role models, we provide a

safe learning environment that inspires youth to think beyond any

limitations they may believe about what is achievable for them in

school or in life. Our aspiration for the program is that it will result in

long-term positive change not only for program participants and their

families, but for the whole of their communities.

In 2014/2015, 40 students received dedicated music, academic, and

nutrition & well-being instruction for 3 hours a day, 5 days a week.

The number of students is growing every year. We also piloted YONA

Explorers, which is now a 24-student early start program offered one

day per week at Mother Teresa and Delton Elementary Schools.

Road to JoyRoad to Joy is the ESO's annual patron appreciation concert. On June 11,

2015, the ESO held it in a new format: our first large-scale fundraising

event. You, our generous community, invested $150,000 toward

ensuring the YONA-Sistema program remains sustainable and vital. The

evening featured the ESO, the Honourable Tommy Banks, Bill Eddins,

many of our arts partners, and YONA-Sistema student performers.

The concert was free, and at the end, all 1,200 guests were asked to

consider making a donation in support of the YONA-Sistema program.

Nearly every one of you did just that, and we are deeply grateful.

The funds raised at Road to Joy cover a significant portion of YONA-

Sistema costs, which include Teaching Artist salaries, instruments,

and a daily nutritional snack.

Total Project Cost: $53 millionThe City of Edmonton has committed $13 million toward the

construction of the new facility. With the unanimous support of City

Council, the Winspear Completion Project is in a strong position to

move forward.

A Capital Campaign has been launched to raise community support

and secure important funds that will ensure our city will have a

vibrant, energetic Centre for Music in the heart of the Arts District.

Like the original Winspear Centre, the project is fueled by the

enthusiasm, dedication, and personal investment of the members of

our community.

The Winspear Completion Project is moving forward with the

overwhelming support of hundreds of stakeholders who have been

consulted throughout the schematic design and design–development

phases; Executive Director Annemarie Petrov, along with Completion

Committee Chair Steven LePoole, personally met with 42 members

of government, 119 community partners, and 20 donors and patrons.

The community will continue to have opportunities for input into

the project.

The Winspear Completion Project is seeking support from all three

orders of government, as well as the community of Edmonton.

Message from Terry Wickham, Programming ManagerLive at the Winspear delighted many Edmonton music fans this year

by bringing in well-known acts from Canada and around the world.

The support that Live at the Winspear receives from the Edmonton

Arts Council, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, Alberta Culture, and

Canadian Heritage demonstrates the government’s commitment to

spreading live music and promoting Canadian art and artists.

We are grateful that they continue to be a part of our programming.

With their investment, Live at the Winspear continues to expand

its Canadian programming and deliver first–rate shows to a

growing audience.

Last season saw the launch of the Live at the Winspear Summer Patio

Series. On Tuesdays and Thursdays over the summer, the Winspear

terrazzo came to life with free programming. Eight Edmonton-based

artists, performers, and community groups were featured, and

almost 10,000 Edmontonians experienced the series’ inaugural

year, whether for an hour or a few minutes passing through. We

look forward to developing relationships with local cultural and arts

groups through this annual program to reach as many Edmontonians

as possible.

The Winspear Centre is a popular venue for bookings by community

groups, business, individuals, touring artists and more. There were

881 activities held in the hall, lobby, and studio spaces during the

Edmonton Symphony Orchestra & Francis Winspear Centre for Music We inspire through music.

Mission• To bring together people of all ages, races, cultures,

and beliefs in the shared joy of music.

• To make the life of every person in our community

better through the experience of live music.

• To set a standard of excellence that enriches and

brings distinction to our community.

• To deliver programs that anticipate the creative

needs of our future society.

• To provide spaces and opportunities for people to

engage with music on their own terms.

• To ensure the fiscal stability of the total enterprise

over the long run.

PurposeWe believe that music is an innate and necessary means of human

expression. It would exist anywhere people congregate. As the

hub for musical activity in the Northern Alberta Region, the

Winspear Centre for Music will provide artistic leadership within

the cultural ecosystem and act as the primary catalyst for this vital

human endeavour.

BackgroundIn 2009, the ESO & Winspear Centre embarked on a new course

of action. Now, six years later, many of the goals outlined in

the 2009–2014 Strategic Plan have been achieved and the

organization is strong, unified, and its various constituents are

working collaboratively in the same direction to deliver exceptional

experiences in music and guest service. We are now in a position to

broaden our targeted focus on deepening relationships with patron

households, and to explore the Winspear enterprise’s role in serving

the community at large.

Goals of the 2015-2020 Strategic Plan

S T R A T E G Y & G O v E R N A N C E

Goal Three: Be a True Centre for Music Goal Four: Resilience & Sustainability

We are a true Centre for Music that is a haven for music–making

and musical discovery, an epicenter for creativity, and the home

for music in Edmonton.

We act as stewards for the future of music in Edmonton and the

Northern Alberta region by creating new opportunities for music

to flourish, maintaining the Winspear Centre in top condition,

building capacity through staff and artist development, and

ensuring operational stability through relationship–based

fundraising strategies and fiscally responsible business practices.

Francis Winspear dreamed of a true centre for music bringing

all people together in the Edmonton Arts District. The

Completion Project, now in design–development phase, will

fulfill that dream; the new facility will include a flex–use

acoustic hall, studio space, classrooms for Banks Institute

programming, and an interactive Discovery Centre. When

finished, the expanded Winspear Centre will be a magnet

that draws people in from all walks of life to share in music

and community.

Until 2009, the ESO and Winspear Centre were separate

entities that shared a workplace and a passion for music.

Under the Strategic Plan we aligned our administration and

governance. Now we operate with a united staff, Board, and

vision, and pursue jointly the same strategic goals.

A strategy of “patron–centric” business has led the

organization toward a greater priority of stewardship and

personal customer service. At the end of the season we

introduced our Guest Experience Advisor team, whose role

embodies our commitment to patron stewardship.

Goal One: Artistic Excellence Goal Two: Inspire Musical Creativity

We deliver performances of exceptional quality that provoke

profound emotional responses and create enduring memories.

We are a driving inspiration and advocate for musical arts

education, experiences, and appreciation.

Over the course of Bill Eddins’ decade–long tenure as Music

Director, the ESO’s fearless audience has been exposed to

extraordinarily diverse programming, from well–loved classics

like Beethoven’s Fifth to modern favourite’s such as hits from

Broadway. Bill and other conductors who have led the ESO

guide symphony-goers through the history and musicality of

each piece as part of our artistic strategy.

At the heart of any culture is a belief system. Ours is that

every life is fundamentally improved by access to music, and

our mission is to make that possible with a diverse range

of accessible programs. In 2013, we launched the Tommy

Banks Institute for Musical Creativity, run by the Department

of Musical Creativity. (See pages 8–9 for more detail on education

programming and community outreach.)

Friend OK Tire

Wow! Wow! Wow and Wow! Thank you to everyone who made SUTS a spectacular part of our summer, especially our amazing ESO. The Rachmaninoff Concerto was breathtaking. Thank you again.

– Ruth Lineker

Congratulations on a wonderful initiative. It is most appreciated. My experience was incredible, the musician beside me (Liz Koch) ensured that I learn many things about orchestra etiquette etc. She certainly seemed to understand the educational part of this and took it very seriously and I really appreciated this.

– b–sides Participant

Every day after school, [my child] was practically bursting with stories and descriptions of what he heard, saw and did. He’s still talking about it, two weeks later, and I believe that he and his classmates will remember their experiences for a very long time.

– Joan Fitzpatrick, Parent of

Science of Sound participant

We love coming to the ESO because we hear new artists and music, enjoy the conductors and always leave feeling better than when we arrived.

– Rita Haugh

My child's self confidence related to performing in front of an audience has improved. She has become a lot more sociable and independent as well.

– YONA parent

The orchestra is so important to our city - I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to listen to fabulous music!

– Dr. Ria Busink
