Narrative

Spine-related impairment has been identified as the leading cause ofdisability in the United States

Spinal disorders cost the United States $600B, annually

Our 2025 vision is to achieve a 10% reduction in spine-related disability in the United States

Spine-related problems have a greater impact on American health than diabetes, lung cancer, and preterm birth. Individually, a patient who is disabled due to a spinal disorder suffers a significant loss in quality of life and succumbs to financial hardship. The mission of the Spine Foundation is to sponsor research, education, and advocacy to achieve a 10% reduction in U.S. spine-related disability by 2025.

The Spine Foundation is a division of the North American Spine Society (NASS), the world’s largest spine-specialty professional organization. The Spine Foundation is the first organization to cohesively and collaboratively address the #1 cause of disability worldwide. It is the first organization to embrace the responsibility of leading and coordinating the charge to reduce the burden associated with spine-related disorders. Among all spine specialists and associated stakeholders, The Spine Foundation will pioneer a new dialogue that emphasizes restoring function and maintaining mobility despite an underlying spinal disorder and associated symptomology.

The Spine Foundation promotes the virtues and benefits of an integrative and collaborative system of care including diagnostic, surgical, non-surgical, perioperative, and preventative measures to achieve an efficient restoration of function. The Spine Foundation will take the lead as the bridge-builder between ALL shareholder groups, laying a foundation of understanding, cooperation, and a common goal of efficiently preventing disability and restoring function, preventing individual financial loss, as well as preserving public resources and economic growth.

Problem Statement

Spinal impairment is the leading cause of disability. Its medical, socioeconomic, occupational, and psychological burdens negatively impact patients, their families and friends, providers, employers, the military, third-party payers, government, and society. With an increase of 300% in the reported rate of spine-related disability in the past 50 years, bringing the total number of Americans affected to over 14 million, a group that consumes the vast majority of the related expenditures, the U.S. is facing a public health crisis.

Without action, a significant segment of the national populace will suffer from the symptoms, functional decline, occupational challenges, economic losses, social impediments, and emotional despair of spine-related impairment. Funding is needed for a national awareness campaign and for related research into the most cost-effective strategies to reduce the occurrence of spine-induced disability. Until the formation of the Spine Foundation, a multi-stakeholder collaborative effort to address this public health crisis was nonexistent.

Guiding Principles

• Bridge-builder between ALL shareholder groups, laying a foundation of understanding, cooperation, and a common goal of efficiently preventing disability and restoring function, preventing individual financial loss, as well as preserving public resources and economic growth.

• Integrative and collective system of care including diagnostic, surgical, non-surgical, perioperative, and preventative measures to achieve an efficient restoration of function.

• Collaborative, multi-stakeholder, ethical, and highly meritorious research.

• Focused on treatment value and patient-centered outcomes.

Culture

• Present & Productive• Collaborative & Inclusive• Humble & Open-Minded• Analytical & Patient• Aware & Responsive• Resourceful & Innovative• Friendly & Fun
