E-learning systems and services provided by NRENs
● E-learning system: server software system that supports online learning and teaching activities
● E-learning system types: ○ Learning Management System○ Learning Object Repository○ Online Exam System○ Video Conference or -lecture system○ Digital Library System○ Study Information System

Reference Architecture
● Reference Architecture is a baseline for guiding the design, construction , operation and services delivery, management and infrastructure of the new system. ○ A reference architecture provides a template solution ○ A reference architecture provides better return on
technology investment○ A reference architecture enables faster deployment of
technology○ A reference architecture provides a modular and
flexible technology base

Research goal
● To deduce conceptual and formal knowledge about reference architecture
● To deduce domain knowledge about reference architecture
● To deduce reference architecture functional properties● To deduce a general standard architecture for NREN e-
learning● To deduce the concrete architecture for NREN e-
learning of developing countries

11
Initial Research Questions
RQ1 : How to deduce conceptual, formal and domain knowledge about reference architecture?
● Rq1.1: what is enterprise architecture in context of NREN e-learning ?
● Rq1.2: What infrastructure and services are providing by NREN in context of e-learning?

12
Initial Research Questions
RQ2 : How to deduce the reference architecture and standard architecture function for NREN e-learning?● Rq2.1: what is reference architecture in
context of NREN e-learning ?● Rq2.2: what is standard architecture in
context of NREN e-learning?● Rq2.3: what is the function of reference
architecture and standard architecture in NREN e-learning?

13
Initial Research Questions
RQ3: How to formulate a concrete architecture of NREN e-learning infrastructure for developing countries?
● Rq3.1: which gap are exist between NREN and e-learning enterprise architecture in different NRENs?
● Rq3.2: What types of technical and user manual required for NREN e-learning infrastructure?

Research Problem
How to model enterprise architecture for NREN concerning e-learning services?
▪ There is no research completed for enterprise architecture of NREN, which without any standard it confusing , it is a risk for countries who want to implement NREN and apply e-learning services.
▪ Variety of organisational structures and network infrastructures used in different NRENs make modeling difficult.

15
Research Problem
● membership to the NREN is different in different countries.
● In some countries e-learning infrastructure is implemented outside of NREN, in other countries it is part of NREN enterprise architecture
● There is no research completed about Reference architecture of NREN’s e-learning services and every country needs to find their own way.

Research Method: Action Design Research
What is the strategy and policy
document in developing countries.

17
Research Method: Action Design Research
Stage 1: Problem formulation● Identify and conceptualize the research opportunity in
NREN on e-learning context ● Formulate initial research questions● Cast the problem question● identify contributing theoretical bases and prior
technology advances in context of NREN and e-
learning

Research Method: Action Design Research
Stage 3 : Reflection and Learning● Reflect on the design and redesign during the research ● Evaluate adherence to principles● Analyze intervention results according to stated goals● This is a continuous stage which repeating for first and
second stage.

Research Method: Action Design Research
Stage 4 : Formalization of Learning● Abstract the learning into concepts for a class of field
problems● Share outcomes and assessment with stackholder ● Articulate outcomes as design principles ● Articulate learning in light of theories selected ● Formalize reference architecure for NREN e-learning

Last year activity
● Last year my topic was “ Sustainability of NREN in
developing countries “ ● Tried for social network among the NREN involved people● Presentation of AfgREN for others 32 APAN and TEIN4
countries participated
http://www.tlu.ee/en/institute-of-informatics
22
Last year activity
● We had to NREN workshop in Dubai, my supervisor also
participated in one of them. ● I drafted the strategy document of AfgREN and presented
and tried to compare with international NREN strategy
document, but latter understood that Architecture of NREN
is more hot topic and sustainability is relate to architecture

Suggestion for better progress
● Weekly skype meeting with supervisor ● we have almost one month holiday during the summer if I
can come to Tallinn university it will help for progress of my research.
