From the Bridge… The Club has had a tremendously busy season this year, from a la carte dining to both social and member sponsored events. We have seen a 54% increase over 2014 in the first quarter on outside events. The outside events are very important to the Club financially. They also expose your wonderful Club to many in the community new to Naples. The dining room staff has done a tremendous job this season, Thank You Very Much!
Chef Chris Jones has been at the Club now for a little more than a year and the results have been fantastic. Members have enthusiastically embraced food quality and presentation for a la carte, buffets and special events. Our covers for a la carte dinners and buffets have increased by over 20%. The demand for a la carte service is consistently increasing, and we are formulating plans for 2016 to meet the needs of the membership. Due to the strong a la carte demand, Tuesday evening dining was added to our March and April calendars. Kudos to Chef Chris and his culinary team for all of their hard work this season.
Have you completed your member survey yet? If you have not, please take a few minutes to complete the survey as the Bridge and the Executive Board will use the information to fine-tune our offerings. Membership satisfaction is our top priority, and we need your feedback. Membership is the life-blood of any great Club, and we request your assistance in helping us attract new members. The Membership Committee, along with the Executive Board, has been hard at work to create both new membership categories and incentive programs for our current members. Our newest membership category is the Mariner Class which will have all the same rights and privileges as a Regular membership with the exception of leasing a slip in the yacht basin. Please contact Ann Marie Ashline, Director of Membership, if you have a friend interested in the new offering, or if you are currently a Social member looking to upgrade to take full advantage of your Club’s offerings.
May also marks the start of the Reciprocal Season, and NSYC will be reciprocating with the clubs you visited the most in 2014. There will be complete reciprocal package with hours of operation and charges at the front desk; an email notice regarding the reciprocal program will also be distributed in the near future.

Dabrowski (Commodore), Manny Blanco (General

NSYC HONORS THOSE LIVES LOST IN DEFENSE OF OUR COUNTRYAT MEMORIAL DAY SERVICE - MAY 25th, 2015
“This isn’t about us,” offered NSYC Club Member, John Ghee, “It’s about those who lost their lives in defense of our country.” Captain Ghee served in the 9th Infantry, which included 365 days in Vietnam. Although at the remarkably age of ten, he knew he wanted to serve in the armed forces and protect our country, he didn’t actually “…feel patriotic at a deep level until the age of 50.” It was then, Captain Ghee explained, that he became acutely aware of those veterans who lost their lives and didn’t experience love, marriage, family and the depth of a full existence. His sense of patriotism became an outward expression of his inner sense of compassion, respect and honor.
Under Captain Ghee’s direction, Naples Sailing & Yacht Club will honor those who defended us with their lives at a Memorial Day Ceremony on May 25th, 2015. All those with a patriotic heart are invited to gather at the NSYC flagpole at 8:30 am to honor those military veterans and first responders who remain here in spirit, although they are no longer with us. Those who served, along with first responders, will be called to the honor guard. To recognize those who lost their lives at sea, a floating wreath will be placed among the waves in the Gulf of Mexico.
Creating a sense of gratitude and awareness in this younger generation is of paramount importance to most veterans, including NSYC members Joe Lowdermilk and his twin brother, Jon. Both Captains Lowdermilk of the U.S. Army - Armor Division, served as pilots with three years in service, including one year in Vietnam. “True Americans gave their heart and soul when their country called them,” Captain Joe explained. “They did their job for all of us.” They deserve respect and the grateful words “Thank you for your service.”
“Oh what solemn pride must be yours, who has given so much for your country”Anonymous
Respectfully submitted: Faith, Denise and Caryn

T his season has simply flown by at the NSYC!
The Key West Party turned out to be a slice of paradise. This was a Key West casual party with attendees wearing flip flops - artfully designed - and other Key West Casual attire!
The men were thrilled to be able to wear shorts and some even arrived wearing cheeseburger and parrot hats! A great time was had by all as we danced the night away to the Trevor Earl Band and enjoyed the fantastic fare prepared by Chef Chris and our outstanding culinary team. It definitely was Cheeseburgers in Paradise and Margaritaville at NSYC! The party room was beautifully decorated with beach umbrellas hanging from the ceiling and the tables were graced with pineapple, tropical flower and flamingo centerpieces - all designed by the talented Steven Bowles. We had an absolutely outstanding group of volunteers for this event, from those lending us their Key West accessories to those helping to decorate and set up for the event. We could
not have done it without the creative leadership of Mary Claire Moser and her Social Committee!! Thank you one and all! The Captains’ Table Auction and Raffle was a great success that evening and thank you to all of those who participated - in donating as well as buying! Janet Belle, our Captains’ Table Chair, did an outstanding job along with Mary Claire Moser, the Auctioneer!
Ladies and Gentlemen, place your bets and don your finery! May 2nd is the 141st Annual Running of the Roses, and we are having our very own Derby Party at the NSYC! Cheryl and Past Commodore Jack Harkins are planning, organizing and executing this party for the 17th year in a row. We could not do it without them! So bring out your Derby Attire and be prepared to sip mint juleps and place your bets as we are off to the races!!! Chef Chris and his team will be preparing his remarkable fried chicken along with other amazing treats. So come one, come all and place those bets. Let’s see who the big winners will be this year!
The End of the Season Bash will be held on Saturday, May 23rd - Memorial Day Weekend. We will once again begin the party poolside at 6:30 pm and gradually make our way upstairs, where we will be entertained by the Brett Forman Band.
As summer approaches, please do not forget the NSYC 4th of July Event. This party features one of the best firework displays seen from the Naples Bay! With the best view, cuisine and entertainment, this party promises to be dynamite!!! See you there!!!

NSYC 2nd Annual Water & Sports Fun Day Saturday, April 4th was a perfect day for all NSYC Members to enjoy the Club out on the waterfront. The Water Festival brought all ages to the Club for swimming in the pool, Easter Egg Hunt, Cookie Decorating, Paddle boarding, Kayaking, and SAILING! Six Catalina 14.2 boat owners from The Naples Yacht Club hosted an exhibition and offered an experience that will be remembered by many for years.
There was a wide variety of people out sailing that day ranging in age from 28 months (held by the father) to 81 (held on to by the grandson.) Sailing started promptly at 10:00 AM with very light winds which were perfect for the 1st time sailors. By 11:30 the breeze had increased to 6 knots and the sailors were able to really feel the thrill of sailing with complete control. After a short respite for lunch and a beverage, the Naples Yacht Club Fleet hosted a real race for experienced adult sailors. The course was set up around 3 buoys placed in strategic locations in the bay, offering the participants challenges as they sailed directly toward the wind, then at 90 degrees to the wind and finally downwind (with the wind directly behind them.) Here are some comments heard from participants that day: “It was my 1st time ever sailing!” “It was my 1st time to control a sail!” “It was my 1st time to steer a sailboat!” The most frequent comment however was “WOW! Now that was really fun. Can we do this again?” “How can I learn to sail”? “Can we have boats like these here at NSYC?”
Second generation NSYC member and longtime champion sailor of FLAME, Jimmy Doane, was very impressed with the event and the opportunity to sail a small bay boat with such a versatile aptitude in all conditions. Jimmy is so excited that he has joined David Duray in an effort to organize an “NSYC BAY SAILING CLUB” within the NSYC. Debbie Rich says that she had so much fun she would like to teach SAILING to our members!
We will hear more from them soon! Watch for announcements regarding BAY SAILING at NSYC!

Hello First Mates!
April, a very busy month for First Mates, began with our
visit to the Conservancy. A maximum capacity group toured the Nature Center for a docent-led walk through the eco-system of our region and a view of its habitants. Most declined to hold the snakes but were pleased to get on board for the Gordon River boat ride where
more flora, fauna and education awaited. We returned to NSYC for another delicious lunch prepared by Chef Chris. Mid-month, we were treated to the sounds of concert pianist, Jodie DeSalvo, whose presentation of “Who’s Afraid of Classical Music” had something for everyone in the audience to appreciate. Closing the month we had a luncheon where we heard of the annual Mother’s Day program at the Women’s Shelter and were treated to a strolling
fashion show by Gretchen Scott Designs.
We will wind up the first half of our season with a “Just Lunch” event on May 13th. This smaller, more intimate gathering provides an opportunity for First Mates to get to know each other and talk about future programming ideas. Join us on the 13th to bid farewell to our seasonal mates and make plans for our fall return. For those of you who stay for the summer, we are planning a “Just Lunch” or two. Look for email blasts from Manny with details.
Enjoy your summer, wherever it takes you. We look forward to a fun and rewarding fall.

Makin’ WakeWith ideal weather for our annual Fleet Review celebration to end the month of March, we
started April with a very well attended Boat Mechanics, Maintenance & Safety Class hosted by Sea Gals and Captain Derek Marsh of Marsh Marine Services covered many topics boaters
always fear: on-board fire emergencies, sudden or unexplained leaks, ditch bags, safety equipment and emergency procedures. Derek demostrated basic preventative maintenance and hands-on instruction in the engine room of Kestrel, Mike and Jennifer Manley’s beautiful 38’ Sabre. The interest that this class generated is sure to create demand for a repeat performance next season.
The spring brunch cruise to Marco Island Yacht Club was very well attended with 48 participants on a picture perfect day (photos on page 18), and we anticipate a good turnout for our May 3rd Port Royal Cruise and Breakfast Buffet at NS&YC. This will be the final boating event of the season open to all members.
The cruise to Sarasota and St Petersburg, led by veteran cruise leaders Mike and Linda Kehoe, was a huge success. They started with an overnight stay at the historic and beautiful Field Club in Sarasota. From there, members cruised to the St Petersburg Yacht Club, from where they explored the famous Dali Museum, the landmark Vinoy Hotel, and many other interesting sites. (photos on page 17)
The May 12th eight-day cruise to three destinations in the Keys may still have room if you are interested in joining. (See page 16 for details.)
Sign up reservations are in progress for our popular four-night Keels & Wheels cruise in the fall. This time, we will be going to Tarpon Pointe Marina & Resort and then on to Legacy Harbor Marina in Ft Myers. Hotel reservations need to be secured now as there is limited room availability at each location. (See page 19 for details.)
More day cruises will be available this year which are open to all members. In addition, some exciting new cruise destinations are in the planning for 2016. Contact me if you have any questions or suggestions for our cruise events. [email protected]

Sarasota Cruise, April 16th – 22ndSix boats cruised on smooth waters to the Field Club in Sarasota. We dined together in their beautiful dining room, the gentlemen looking particularly snazzy in jackets. Next day we travelled up the big water of Tampa Bay to the St. Petersburg Yacht Club, settled in and had a casual picnic supper on the dock. The waterfront is full of parks, The Fine Arts Museum, the Dali Museum, a farmers’ market, and this weekend there was a huge art fair. Dinner at the new Sea Salt was lovely. Two boats left a day early on their own because of work obligations (ugh) and the rest of us set out for the Venice Yacht Club first thing the next day to beat weather, and we did. Our right-of-way knowledge was tested just north of Long Boat Pass. Four Zodiacs came toward our port side; red light, right? We are the stand-on vessels, except that they had 50 caliber guns mounted bow and stern, with men holding weapons port and starboard. We decided to give way. It was the Coast Guard doing a live gunnery exercise. Evie and Tom Theisen on the Evie Anne, and Mark and Nan Goebel on True Blue, all very experienced boaters, were first timers on a NS&YC cruise. We loved having them along and hope they will join us on many more cruises. Mike and Linda Kehoe, Cruise Leaders

America’s Cup Team Member Brian MacInnes returned as our guest speaker for the Annual AVOW Hospice Regatta.
The Regatta dinner at the NSYC was an awesome event. Over 150 people attended the dinner, and everyone was entertained by Brian’s stories of his experiences from the America’s Cup and other sailing adventures we could only dream about. Brian offered a very interactive experience for the audience.
SUNDAY APRIL 19TH was the Final Sugden Sailing Sunday Picnic of the season. These Sunday sailing picnics have proven to be as popular as the Water Sports Festival at NSYC docks. We will look to resume these events as soon as school is back in session and the staff at Sugden can again accommodate us. If you haven’t been to one of these events, you are missing a great time, so don’t miss the first one of the season this fall.
Your Sailing Fleet has been very busy recently, attending regattas, day sailing in Naples Bay, Water Sports Fun Day, family picnics and sailing cruises. For example:
- March 7 & 8: NSYC took 2nd Place in The Conquistador Cup at Punta Gorda in the True Cruising Class
- March 14: NSYC took 1st Place in Fort Myers’ Shrimp Festival Regatta in the True Cruising Class
- March 28 & 29: NSYC hosted the AVOW Hospice Regatta dinner with over 150 persons enjoying Brian MacInnes’ presentation. (Photos of the regatta included on this page.)
- April 4th NSYC Hosted the 2nd Annual Water & Sports Fun Day Festival & BBQ lunch poolside.
- April 7th Reid Tomlin & Larry Pirnak arranged for NSYC to host a number of cancer patients to enjoy a “Sailing Heals” lunch and day sail out on the Gulf of Mexico.
- April 11th took us to Marco Island for the Sailing Association of Marco Island “Bud Lite Regatta”
- April 25 was the famous annual NSYC MESSMER CUP with an awesome award breakfast buffet at NSYC
On May 14-18 we will host the 6th annual BONE ISLAND REGATTA to Key West and a Race back to Naples. This is always an exciting and challenging regatta for our region.
NSYC is proposing to establish a SAILING CLUB within the Club. The proposed club will be open to ALL NSYC members. If you are interested in getting involved in this exciting new program, contact me – after all, SAILING is in our name! [email protected]

And now the Yachting Etiquette Tip of the month:
Bring only minimal light soft luggage (PLEASE NO APPLIANCES) Unlike The Plaza or The Ritz-Carlton, most yachts do not have lavish, full-size closets to store your clothes or anything additional. As a
result, it would not be realistic to bring three large steamer trunks. As a courtesy to the host, other guests and crew, respect the lack of space. Pack lightly in soft luggage that can be easily collapsed, folded, and stowed aboard the yacht. Leave the PC and other electronic devices at
home. Make your personal on shore reservations at your destination. Do NOT expect to share the comforts of the host’s yacht in port.

Bud Light Regatta – April 11th
On April 7th, NSYC members participated in hosting a Sailing Heals event at the Club. Sailing Heals is a charitable organization based in Massachusetts that brought their unique mission to Naples for the second year in a row at NSYC. They invited cancer patients and their local oncologist, Dr. Susan Morgan, to come out for a therapeutic day on the water. The organization sponsored a fabulous lunch prepared by our Chef Chris and served out on the balcony overlooking our marina to begin the afternoon. After lunch, R/C Larry Pirnak and Reid Tomlin & friends volunteered their beautiful sailboats to take everyone out on a peaceful sail in into the Gulf of Mexico and back. It was truly a great day on the water. For more information about Sailing Heals, visit their website SailingHeals.org or contact Lynn Shoemaker if you are interested in developing this program for future events at NSYC. [email protected]
22 The Spinnaker Naples Sailing & Yacht ClubSummer 2015
NSYC Wine ClubThe Wine Club hosted the last scheduled event of the season in April with a “cellar party” for those interested in sharing some of their favorite wines. Participating members brought several bottles and talked about the wines, including why they liked them. Each member had the opportunity to taste each of the wines and “compare notes” based on their own impressions. Fun and educational!
A plan is underway with a small group of members for a “Road Trip” to the Willamette Valley in Oregon in September. John Furrie will join us and will organize visits to wineries, tasting rooms, and a day in the vineyards during the harvest season. The Oregon Pinot Noirs have demonstrated great qualities and have been well reviewed over the past several years, and we will have the opportunity to taste some of the best. We will also arrange some culinary experiences for the participating members. Again, fun and educational!
The Wine Club members who are here during the summer may get together on occasion, but the regular monthly events will begin again in October. If you are not a member and want to be added to the Wine Club e-mail list, let me know. Email: [email protected]
Cheers ~
Jerry Belle
Clubs WITHIN THE CLUB
The Financial and Investment Forum has concluded its Winter & Spring season of meetings, which focused on the economic and investment outlook, with particular attention paid to cautionary signals after six years of strong market gains. Discussions covered economic concepts and patterns to monitor in the months ahead as well as appropriate portfolio strategies for the current stage of the business cycle. Plans are being made for additional outside speakers next season as well as another opportunity for members to attend a meeting of the local CFA Society of Naples. Prospective members should find next season’s meetings particularly timely given the impending Federal Reserve interest rate increases. Watch for announcements about future meeting dates and times.

Bowling ClubRemember how much fun bowling was? Well it still is. The NSYC Bowling League re-captures that fun. It’s a unique league tailored for the NSYC member. We all travel, go on cruises, and entertain guests throughout the year which makes it difficult to commit to anything over a long period of time. That’s why we are going with the open bowling concept rather than with fixed teams. When you show up to bowl, you are assigned to a team for that day. If you can’t make it to bowling, that’s ok. We’ll keep your average on file until you can show up again and it’ll be like you never left.
We bowl every Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 PM. After bowling we can then meet at the Club for cocktails followed by that great Surf and Turf dinner.
We bowl at Bowland, 5400 Tamiami Trail North, just North of Pine Ridge Road on 41. To sign up or if questions, call George Dellas at 239-643-8091 or 619-994-2107 or email [email protected]

Sea GalsAhoy Ladies
Even though our season is coming to a close, our
calendar is still very active. In April, we co-hosted Boat Maintenance and Mechanics for Dummies with our Sail and Cruise Fleets. We poked fun with the name of the seminar but it was a very serious topic. Derek Marsh, who
maintains many of our members’ boats, was the presenter. He did a great job presenting the simplest but most important things we can do to keep ourselves safe, as well as to protect our boats from expensive repairs. Over Easter weekend, several Sea Gals helped run The Water Sports Festival at the Club. This turned out to be a beautiful day and, judging by the happy faces, was a huge success. Unfortunately, our hands-on electronics training has been difficult to complete. We were forced to cancel our scheduled class at the last minute because the boat reserved for us had been sold. However, Marine Max did offer to give one-on-one training to anyone who purchased boats from Marine Max.
In the meantime, if you have any ideas you would like to share with us, please give us a call.

Mike Minch, Larry Lohman, and Joe Zaccagnino went on a backwater fishing charter out of Everglades City on March 31st. With shrimp as bait, they were in four feet of water fishing for spotted sea trout when suddenly a 100 lb. tarpon grabbed their line. Joe and Larry began the 1-l/2 hour struggle to reel her in. Mike jumped in to give a helping hand. Besides being on this boat trip which netted the 100 lb. tarpon, Mike was also the one who caught the 65 lb. cobia last month. Women love him…fish fear him.
We look forward to more fun fishing together in the future. Contact George Dellas for any information regarding the Fishing Club at 239-643-8091 or 619-994-2107 or email [email protected].

Sailing SolosAhoy Solos,
As the season winds down, we look back on a lot of great times together this season! On April 22, we met for dinner at Vergina’s on Fifth Ave and then went on to the Sugden Theatre to see “The Last Romance.” Our March event
included a sunset cruise on The Double Sunshine followed by dinner. It was a beautiful sunset; a good time was had by all! Thanks to all who attended. If you are planning on attending the Derby Party on May 2, ask to be seated at the Solos table. Also, we are considering changing our name. Please check your emails and let me know your thoughts and suggestions. You can email me at [email protected]. Looking forward to many good times!!
Fair Winds,
Debbie Rich
This has been a fun car club season as it
winds down for the summer months. We will resume in a few short months later this year. Take the summer months to explore this great country--there are so many wonderful places of interest just
waiting for you to discover. Keeping with the car club scene, visit the hundreds of auto museums. I can think of a couple that are outstanding: The Gilmore Collection near Kalamazoo, Michigan and the Cord Museum in Indiana. Until next fall, I want to say it has been a pleasure getting to know all of you and a fun experience organizing the various activities of our wonderful car club.
