TIMELINE

Park Construction Budget = $9,440,000

FUNDING

Current California drought is the worst in history. The rules, regulations and restrictions regarding outdoor water use are changing daily.

CSD will have to assess conditions as project progresses to determine affect on design and/or construction.

CSD currently designs with reduced turf and water conservation in mind.

If drought persists, project construction may be delayed/ modified accordingly.

DROUGHT CONDITIONS

CSD traditionally designed playgrounds with a combination of rubber surfacing and wood fiber.

Recent product failures and expensive replacement costs have caused staff to reconsider the use of rubber surfacing.

Rubber surfacing is double the cost of wood fiber.

Both surfaces meet current standards for playground safety.

Wood fiber will be used at Oasis Park.

PLAYGROUND SURFACING

OASIS PARK is defined as a community park (20-100 acres) COMMUNITY PARKS typically include the following amenities:

Athletic Fields (lighted) Recreation Center or Preschool Sports Courts (Tennis, Basketball, Bocce, Volleyball etc.) Playgrounds for 2-5 and 5-12 age groups Restrooms and/or Concession Buildings Picnic area(s) with shade structure Dog Parks Loop Trail Parking Recreation Programming Security lighting

CSD PARK DESIGN PRINCIPLES

Fields and court games should be oriented north to south. Avoid field overlays. Allow space for buffer around fields. Avoid locating near homes. Avoid locating near passive uses. Provide access to parking lot and restrooms. Provide area for bleachers, benches and concessions.

ATHLETIC FIELDS

FIELD LIGHTING

Lighting fields offers additional practice and play time. New light control technology: Reduced spill light Restricting and reducing glare Minimizing sky glow LED fixtures

Consider field layouts

Separate structures and areas for 2- 5 year olds Safety - low height, low impact Visibility - important for adult and child to interact, supervision Creative and imaginative play Tactile environment

2-5 YEAR OLD PLAYGROUNDS

Large challenging structures Net climbers Boulders and rock climbing Equipment with movement – Spinners Meeting areas and social play Thematic play with more complexity – history, fossils, dinosaurs, nature, etc.

5-12 YEAR OLD PLAYGROUNDS

WATER PLAY

Re-circulating vs. drain away Locate adjacent to restrooms Locate near the playground Integrate theming

Trails or walkways Soft, all-weather surfaces (ie. decomposed granite) Adult fitness stations

ADULT FITNESS

Skateable pieces and furnishings which provide a safe and legal place for skateboarding

SKATE ELEMENTS

Shade shelters and canopies Benches and picnic facilities Non – programmed open space Aesthetic surface treatments Sculptural features Interpretive signage

PICNIC AND GATHERING PLACES

Provide 1 to 1.5 acres Consider separate small and large dog areas Separate entrances Easily accessible from public sidewalks and parking

DOG PARKS

NATURE GARDEN

PASSIVE GARDEN AREAS

Butterfly Gardens

Edible Gardens

Native Plant Gardens

Edible gardens with fruiting trees Gardens with butterfly attracting plants Demonstration gardens with California native plants

Drought tolerant landscaping Reduced lawn areas Naturalistic plantings Shade trees Low maintenance Seasonal change - flowers and leaf color Mounding

LANDSCAPING

OASIS THEME

Desert Oasis theme Desert-like drought tolerant plantings Palms as accent trees Illusion of water Faux sand dunes in the play area

BASE SHEET

Park site will include a (6000 sq. ft.) Preschool Center

Park site will include parking (estimate 150-250 spaces dependent on programming)

Park site will include 2 multi-purpose fields

PARK DESIGN 101

Use the cut-outs to layout the elements you want in your park

Draw in walkways with dashed lines or arrows

Jot down ideas and make notes

Be creative and have fun!

Move cut-outs to best fit the site

Separate passive and active uses

Allow buffer space and circulation between all uses

Locate uses close to appropriate facilities

YOUR FINAL DESIGN!

PRESENT YOUR IDEAS TO THE GROUP!

CSD STAFF WILL DEVELOP MASTER PLAN!
