Columbus City Schools This criteria replaces all previously communicated criteria Revised 11/14/2016 Preparing Students for Placement in Accelerated Middle School Math Criteria for School Year 2016-2017 Math 6 November 2016 Parents of students enrolled in Math 6 who have been identified according to the criteria as possibly being ready for accelerated math in grade 7 will receive a letter and attend a parent meeting to receive additional information. See the CCS criteria on page 2. Grade 6 November 2016 Students who have been identified will be given a district exam to assess knowledge of math content and student readiness for acceleration in mathematics. Other students may be eligible for this exam based on teacher recommendation. Grade 6 January 2017 Parents receive results from the assessments and details on areas on which to focus to support their student in becoming prepared for acceleration during grade 7. Along with the results, parents receive ideas/info to support their students. Grade 6 March 2017 Students who have been identified by the criteria will take a placement test consisting of computer-based questions and paper/pencil extended response questions. This exam will be given during a one- week period at each school. Grade 6 April 2017 Parents will be notified of their student's placement for middle school math for the 7th grade year. Grade 7 August 2017 Students who successfully demonstrated readiness will be dually scheduled in Math 7 and Math 8 with parent permission. Students will take both classes for 2 periods of math. Parents will sign a statement of expectations to indicate awareness of parent and student requirements. Grade 7 August-June 2017-18 During the first 9 weeks, following interventions and regular parent communication, students not maintaining a grade of 'C' or better in each course may be removed from Math 8. Grade 8 August 2018 Students who successfully complete Math 7 and Math 8 with a grade of 'C' or better will be enrolled in Integrated Mathematics I for high school credit.

Preparing Students for Placement in Accelerated Middle School Math Criteria for School Year 2016-2017

Math 6 November 2016

Parents of students enrolled in Math 6 who have been identified according to the criteria as possibly being ready for accelerated math in grade 7 will receive a letter and attend a parent meeting to receive additional information.

Grade 6 November 2016

Students who have been identified will be given a district exam to assess knowledge of math content and student readiness for acceleration in mathematics.

Other students may be eligible for this exam based on teacher recommendation.

Grade 6January 2017

Pre-Identification of students who may be academically prepared for accelerated math classesParents/Guardians of these students will receive a letter in November notifying them that their student may be eligible for accelerated math courses in grade

7 and that they will need to attend an informational meeting to get more information.

MUST MEET AT LEAST ONE OF THE FOLLOWING

• Student identified as gifted in either mathematics orsuperior cognition

* Students new to the district might not have grade card data available

Pre-Assessment to determine readiness for Acceleration in Middle School Math

•Given to students who have been identified with NWEA MAP and Academic Performance in Math 5.The results of the 6th grade assessment will be provided to parents/guardians. The purpose of this assessment isto inform, NOT for placement.Results include:•Student performance on specific math concepts•Areas in which students need additional support•Strategies, ideas and information on resources to support your student over the next few months

NWEA MAP and AIR testing Gifted - Talented

• 6th grade Beginning-of the-Year (BOY) score of 230 orgreater on NWEA MAP and all 3s and 4s in math onreport card OR• A score of 4 or 5 on 5th grade math AIR test

Identification of Students for the Exam to determine Placement MUST MEET ONE OF THE FOLLOWING

NWEA MAP

• Students who scored 230 orgreater on the MAP

Teacher recommendation (MUST include a letter from the teacher)

District Middle School Mathematics Acceleration Exam (administered in March)An exam to identify student mastery of critical concepts to determine preparedness for college and career readiness expectations for grade 7and 8. Administered to Math 6 students who have the required NWEA MAP score, or Teacher Recommendation. Students who demonstrate mastery on this exam will be dually scheduled into Math 7 and Math 8 with parent permission during the 7th grade year.

• Each school will work collaboratively with parents to evaluate and monitor the progress of the students who are taking acceleratedmath courses in middle school.• Prior to being scheduled in the course, parents/guardians will sign the expectations and responsibilities page that describes the district

expectations and needed support for students to be successful in these advanced classes.

Students who are taking a course above their grade level may be in a class of students who are older and taking the class as part of their regular course schedule.These are extremely rigorous and fast-paced courses. Please note that Integrated Math I is a 9th grade course. The Integrated Math I grade will appear on a student’s high school transcript. In addition to the above criteria, strong self-regulatory habits (motivation, study skills, discipline) are important for students to be successful.

Students who do not meet the NWEA MAP requirement but have been recommended by their current Math 6 teacher may take the test. Teacher recommendations will be based on the following:

• Mathematical skills• Results from pre-assessment• Study skills• Motivation
