The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra’s 68th season has been musically diverse and rich, and the year proved to be distinctive and challenging in its own ways. It has been a season of many noteworthy musical performances, many obstacles in the competitive environment, and much dedication on the part of the musicians, staff, and board were called on to maintain the financial stability of the organization. I am happy to report that the WSO achieved its ninth consecutive surplus in this season.

This was my fourth and final year as President of the Board. For me, some of the highlights of my term as president have included the many wonderful concerts, (particularly the Bruckner concerts), the very successful WSO appearance at Carnegie Hall in 2014, the growing success of the WSO Spring Gala, the ability to move the administration into significantly improved working spaces in the Richardson Building, the process of working with the members of the board and the staff of the WSO, and the gradually increasing financial stability of the WSO. During this period, there has been significant investment in the orchestra itself. The orchestra season has grown by two weeks and two musician positions were restored to bring the orchestra

size back up to sixty-seven players. While the role was more demanding and time-consuming than I had anticipated, I take great satisfaction of knowing that the WSO is stronger and more resilient now than it was when I started with the board five years ago.

Through my affiliation with the WSO, I have had the opportunity to connect with leaders of Canadian arts organizations through the Canadian Arts Summit events that I attended over the past four years and I also took advantage of learning opportunities through the League of American Orchestras. I also enjoyed a governance and leadership program offered to the chairs of not-for-profit organizations through the Harvard School of Business. These activities were not mandatory, but my participation in these opportunities that are only open to the board chairs made my experience with the WSO richer, more interesting, and fulfilling.

I conclude my term with appreciation for the opportunity to contribute to the life of our community in this way and thanks to many people for making this a very worthwhile and enjoyable experience. I want to thank my fellow board members for their participation, great ideas and personal generosity to the WSO. I want

to make a special note of thanks to Terry Sargeant and Curt Vossen who have worked with me in providing leadership to the WSO. My thanks go as well to the WSO’s executive and musical leadership team of Trudy Schroeder and Alexander Mickelthwate, who both have great dedication, excellent skills, and boundless passion for the success of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. Richard Turner has been a wonderful source of information and guidance throughout my time as president, and I thank him for his friendship and support.

By artistic, administrative, governance, financial, and community relevance measures, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra has completed its 68th season with success. Some of the accomplishments of the year deserve to be noted:

• The opportunity to honour the generosity of Yvonne Hummel and her family members with a wonderful performance of the Hummel Trumpet Concerto.

• The attendance of noted music critic and musicologist Norman Lebrecht to present a context and history related to the WSO performance of Mahler’s Tenth Symphony.

• The tenth annual River East-Transcona School Division celebration of arts programs.

• The wonderful progress of students enrolled in the fifth year of the WSO’s Sistema Winnipeg program.

• The amazing impact of the Winnipeg New Music Festival performance of Gavin Brayer’s The Sinking of the Titanic in Pan-Am Pool complete with musicians performing from the high level diving boards, fog machines, synchronized swimmers, and a sold-out mesmerized audience. Huge thanks to the Winnipeg Arts Council, the City of Winnipeg, and Mayor Brian Bowman for making this poolside performance possible.

Message from the

Executive Director

• The development and launch of the Winnipeg Culture Pass that will help visitors to our city add attendance at some of our fine performing arts, visual arts, and museums to their stay in Winnipeg.

• The chance to improve backstage facilities for the female members of the WSO.

• The satisfaction of reaching a four year labour agreement with the musicians of the WSO that provides a framework to take us through to 2020.

• The significant accomplishment of delivering a ninth consecutive operating surplus, which is certainly a record in the 68 year history of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.

• The personal honour of being recognized by Tourism Winnipeg with their Leader of the Year award.

• The remarkable diversity of partnerships and collaborative projects the WSO engages with on an annual basis. From celebrations at The Forks, to ballet and opera performances, performances with choirs, dance ensembles, the Sistema Winnipeg joint concert, the concert for Canadian civic leaders, and so many others. It is both a necessity and a joy to find our strength in collaborating with so many individuals and organizations and to be part of the mixture of community assets that makes Winnipeg such a great city.

• The weekly pleasure of WSO performances that ranged in complexity, power, and diversity.

Special thanks are required for the work of the board of directors and in particular Timothy Burt, who is concluding his term as President of the Board. His engagement with the work and the people of the WSO has been a large factor in the achievements and accomplishments of the WSO over the past four years. We thank you for your leadership, generosity, and genuine passion for the work and music.

The full series of concerts, educational programs, special events and outreach initiatives could not be presented without the combined talents of WSO musicians, administrative staff members, board members, Women’s Committee members, volunteers, funders, donors, sponsors, and audience members. What a privilege it is to work with such a fine group of people in support of such a worthy cause.

My tenth season for me was every bit as memorable as the others I have been so privileged to be a part of with our wonderful WSO. So much great music was performed in our last season, and with such dedication!

Our season brought many new and exciting “firsts” to the WSO. Our performance of Mahler’s Tenth Symphony was a standout, as was our special guest host, eminent British writer Norman Lebrecht, who wrote that ours is an orchestra “with a sound all its own.” Our Mahler Festival included a performance of the Symphony No. 2 Resurrection - always a powerful and moving experience. Another memorable premiere honoured the 125th anniversary of Ukrainian settlement in to Canada, as composer Larysa Kuzmenko’s oratorio Golden Harvest featured the brilliant Winnipeg-born soprano Andriana Chuchman.

Carrying on with our festival plan, we celebrated the trumpet in both our Classics and Air Canada Pops series in November, with performances by virtuosi Joe Burgstaller and James Morrison respectively.

Message from the

Music Director

An especially strong group of soloists appeared with us this past season. Tianwa Yang dazzled our audiences in Paganini, and we immediately invited her back for next season. Swiss pianist and 2012 Leeds winner Louis Schwizgebel gave us some magical Beethoven, and of course our own beloved concertmaster Gwen Hoebig brought the high spirits of Lalo’s Symphonie espagnole to life as she does in everything she plays.

Guest conductors Yaron Traub and James Feddeck were welcomed enthusiastically both by our musicians and audiences. On the Pops side, Canada’s venerable roots band La Bottine Souriante and singer/songwriter Rufus Wainwright brought their special music and personalities to our stage to acclaim by all.

Our Winnipeg New Music Festival continued to “push the envelope,” inciting lots of fresh and responsive comment by engaged audiences.

My special thanks to Resident Conductor Julian Pellicano, who not only assisted me in my work but

shouldered the majority of our exciting Air Canada Pops, SoundBytes, Great-West Life Kids Concerts and Specials during the season. Our season literally had something for everyone!

I want to thank everybody in the administration and the board for your dedication and support in making the WSO a crown jewel in Winnipeg’s arts community.

2015-2016 Season Highlights

Alexander Mickelthwate’s tenth full season as Music Director continued to display our orchestra’s stimulating programming of well-known masterworks and new discoveries to excite WSO audiences in presentations designed for new listeners, concert-wise veterans and everyone else in between.

A broad sampling of the core symphonic literature in the Classics series was highlighted along with significant first performances by the orchestra. The Investors Group Classics A series opened with renowned piano prodigy Umi Garrett. Our Mahler Festival began a week of celebration of his music with a stirring performance of his Symphony No. 2: Resurrection, and closed with the first WSO performance of Mahler’s Symphony No. 10 in the Deryck Cooke performing version. Renowned author and Mahler scholar Norman Lebrecht hosted those performances, providing a wealth of insight about Mahler’s life before the performances and in an unforgettable lecture earlier in the week.

Our festival format continued with music composed especially for the trumpet. Australian jazz trumpet

master James Morrison opened our trumpet week with a roof-raising pops show, assisted by local jazz singer Amber Epp. Virtuoso Joe Burgstaller performed Hummel’s Trumpet Concerto on our closing festival concert that also featured Stravinsky’s trumpet-infused score to his ballet Petrushka. Surtitles projected above the stage kept the audience aware of the ballet’s story.

Our 2015-2016 season introduced a splendid group of soloists in their WSO debut performances. Tianwa Yang is among the world’s most recorded violinists, and she dazzled our opening weekend with Paganini’s acrobatic Violin Concerto No. 1. Swiss pianist and 2012 Leeds Competition winner Louis Schwizgebel equally proved his growing international stature in an outstanding account of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 2. Canadian pianist Alain Lefèvre gave us Rachmaninoff’s original version of his Piano Concerto No. 4.

The world premiere of Canadian composer Larysa Kuzmenko’s oratorio Golden Harvest honoured the 125th anniversary of Ukrainian settlement in Canada. Soloists Andriana Chuchman and Michael Nyby were featured in this moving tribute, for which surtitles were

again effectively used. A rousing performance of Orff’s Carmina Burana sent the large audiences home with memories of a vivid evening.

Other Classics programs featured guest conductors making their WSO debuts. Performances of Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4 (Italian), led by James Feddeck, and Schumann’s Symphony No. 2, conducted by Yaron Traub, were standouts. Our orchestra’s beloved Concertmaster Gwen Hoebig appeared in a memorable reading of Lalo’s Symphonie espagnole.

In his third season as Resident Conductor, Julian Pellicano took charge of a wide variety of programs, winning audiences and orchestra members alike with his excellent musicianship and engaging personality throughout our Air Canada Pops, Great-West Life Kids Concerts, SoundBytes and outreach offerings.

Our choral programs continued in strong fashion with contributions from major Manitoba choral institutions: the Mennonite Festival Chorus, Prairie Voices, the University of Manitoba Singers, Polycoro, the Canadian Mennonite University Chorus and the Winnipeg Philharmonic Choir.

Our theme-based SoundBytes series entered its sixth season with typically eclectic programs. British comedian Rainer Hersch returned with his typically memorable brand of musical mayhem. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s acclaimed and enlightening Beyond the Score© presentation of Elgar’s Enigma Variations attracted another appreciative audience. Disney’s FANTASIA closed SoundBytes, the orchestra performing the score live to a screening of the classic movie.

Our Air Canada Pops season offered a wide mix of music and styles for all to enjoy. Legendary Quebec roots band La Bottine Souriante had our audiences jumping to their feet, showing why this band is among Canada’s treasures. Home Alone the movie had the orchestra performing John Williams’s classic score live to sold-out audiences over the Holidays. Rufus Wainwright brought his distinctive songwriting and performing to our stage. Cirque Mechanics filled the eyes with dazzling acrobatics to familiar classics.

Our outreach department was especially busy in the 2015-2016 Season. Alexander and the orchestra visited

six high schools throughout the city in the aptly titled Up Close and Orchestral series, promoting the season and filling the various gyms and auditoriums with great music. Similarly, our Adventures in Music series in February and March brought approximately 15,000 elementary school students to the Centennial Concert Hall for a highly successful concert that featured dancers, singers, entertainers and plenty of symphonic inspiration from our musicians.

Our Great-West Life Kids Concerts series again proved highly successful, both in the lively programs and engaging pre-concert activities. Mime Dan Kamin’s Haunted Orchestra was a Halloween treat. A special abridged version of Disney’s FANTASIA was offered in tandem with our full SoundBytes program, with the orchestra performing live to the movie. WSO mascot Manny Tuba was back in a special home-grown show with Mr. Mark (Mark Cameron) and a whole host of Winnipeg’s finest talent.

Once again, Winnipeg new music-lovers’ hearts and souls were warmed in the middle of our cold winter by the 2016 Winnipeg New Music Festival. Curated

by Alexander and Matthew Patton, this year’s Festival featured appearances and music by composers David Lang, Joan Tower, Henryk Górecki and former WSO composers-in-residence Glenn Buhr, Randolph Peters, Patrick Carrabré and Vincent Ho. The premiere of Derek Charke’s Earth Airs was among the highlights, along with a special performance of Gavin Bryars’s Sinking of the Titanic in a memorably encompassing, exotically lit setting at the Pan Am Pool, further enhanced by a troupe of synchronized swimmers. Drone performer/composer Stephen O’Malley and renowned percussion ensemble So Percussion appeared during the stimulating week that closed with Górecki’s Symphony No. 4, hosted by the composer’s son Mikolaj Górecki.

The 2016 Winnipeg New Music Festival (WNMF) was the 25th edition, an important and historic milestone; twenty-five years of being one of the leading voices for new music in Canada and North America. While celebrating the Festival’s history, we also continued to push the creative boundaries of what new music is. The Festival is a snapshot of our society encompassing extremes from the core of the symphonic tradition to unheard new sound worlds where time stands still, joining disparate areas such as the underground with the post-academic in an effort to seek new contexts for music to be heard within.

The innovative new vision, overseen by Artistic Director Alexander Mickelthwate and Curator Matthew Patton, aims to present work of international importance that also strives to be ahead of the envelope of what is and will be happening in new music. It is also important that many different genres and threads of music and art are presented and are heard in different contexts and alternative spaces. It is an expansive vision of art and music based on innovation and inclusion. This year’s WNMF programming continued our push to reach new

audiences and wider demographics by working with existing partnerships while constantly seeking to create new partnerships. The effect has been to bring in larger broad-based audiences who might not normally attend but are excited by this new vision.

The week-long event celebrated a number of completely different currents of new music including presenting important new work in parallel with the historical context out of which such work has grown. This included a major new international world premiere commission of Un Vide Dans Le Ciel by Paris-based drone music specialist Stephen O’Malley, which was his first for large orchestra. For an historical parallel, the Festival also performed the North American premiere of Phill Niblock’s latest work for orchestra #9 (number 9), Niblock being one of the major influences on O’Malley and his new brand of contemporary music.

The Festival opened with noted American contemporary composer David Lang, nominated this year for an Academy Award for his music for the movie Youth, attending the performance of several of his new works which were all Canadian premieres. The closing program

featured the mammoth Symphony No. 4 by Henryk Górecki (Symphony of Sorrowful Songs) a work left unfinished at his death in 2010 which was completed by his son Mikolaj, who attended the Festival to be present for the work’s Canadian premiere.

The featured performing ensemble at this year’s WNMF was the world-renowned group So Percussion from New York, who presented works by Steve Reich, David Lang, and crossover artist Bryce Dessner of The National.

As part of the 25th edition of the Festival, all four previous WSO composers-in-residence returned for the performance of new commissioned works or major works composed during their tenure with the WSO. The WSO has been committed to being a strong voice and advocate for Canadian new music and to giving it a platform within the community of international composers and new music.

The WNMF is always looking for alternative spaces in which to involve a diversity of musicians, artists, and audiences, and this year a very special event was created entitled Music and Trauma, which took place at

the Pan-Am Pool. This evening saw the performance of The Sinking of the Titanic by Gavin Bryars and Afterlife Mutilation, a world premiere by composer/curator Matthew Patton. Musicians were situated on the various levels of the diving tower, special lighting was brought in, fog was dissipated over the water, synchronized swimmers performed in the darkened environment, and the Sistema Winnipeg children’s choir was situated high up in the bleachers on the side of the pool. The imaginative evening was a huge success and intensely gratifying for all the artists, and the audience as well. The concert sold out quickly, bringing together many different artistic elements including, most importantly, an iconic alternative space in which music had never been performed before, and attentive listeners responded in large numbers coming from throughout the city along with national and international media coverage.

While music is the core, the Festival also aims to involve artistic audiences in all media including film, art, and literature. Canada’s most important artist Michael Snow attended an evening dedicated to him that included a new film-in-progress on his work as a composer. Local

artists Neil Farber, Michael Dumontier, Simon Hughes, Krisjanis Kaktins-Gorsline, Aston Coles, and Irene Bindi all created new artwork and installations. The Pop Nuit series, for the first time produced by the WSO, continued this year with an unforgettable, monolithic solo show from international guest artist Stephen O’Malley.

The Festival continued with its commitment to outreach programs giving performance opportunities to many different local music ensembles including the Brandon University New Music Ensemble, the University of Manitoba Percussion Ensemble, Viewing Method Group, the University of Manitoba eXperimental Improv Ensemble, and Keri Latimer on theremin. A Creativity and Critical Thinking Workshop was also presented by local music director Zane Zalis. All of these featured groups and individuals serve to showcase the rich local music scene.

Pre- and post-concert panels and discussion on a wide variety of topics are also an essential part of the WNMF experience as we continue to strive towards expanding and extending the Festival is artistic content. This year, we included panels, discussions, and demonstrations

on important related topics such as music therapy, and the psychoanalysis of music and the artistic mind.

This year’s WNMF programming continued to both push and break down creative boundaries within classical music, committing to highlight artists and music that exist beyond the assumed world of new music. Audiences responded and numbers were up across the board. With an expansive and inclusive philosophy of music and the arts, the WNMF constantly strives to reach new audiences and bring in new listeners wishing to be challenged, stimulated, provoked, and fulfilled emotionally through the constantly evolving, living, and vital art form of new music.

The WSO remains committed to creating exceptional musical experiences for Manitobans through a comprehensive variety of education and community engagement programs and initiatives. In 2015-2016, more than 36,000 students engaged with the WSO and deepened their connection to orchestral music through participation in one of WSO’s concerts, and over 1,250 students received the incredible opportunity to perform on stage with the WSO.

The Bach to School program, comprised of ten ensemble groups from within the orchestra sections – string, woodwind, brass and percussion – visited more than 50 schools across Manitoba and reached over 11,000 students from Kindergarten to Grade 8. Bach to School has a strong reach to many communities including rural, inner city, junior high and high schools, covering 11 Manitoba school divisions. In the 2015-2016 season, the Bach to School repertoire was connected to Adventures in Music as a way to create a continuous learning experience for student participants across several interactions with the WSO.

Nursery Notes is an innovative program designed to reach pre-school aged children. A WSO string ensemble shared presentations in nine different nursery schools across Winnipeg and connected over 150 children with music and instruments through interactive activities. The 2015-2016 Nursery Notes program engaged children with the concept of emotions and how music can help express different emotions. The WSO also partners with the River East Transcona School Division each year to present this program as part of their nursery school classes including an instrument petting zoo where the children get an opportunity to touch and play the instruments themselves.

2015-2016 was the seventh year the WSO presented the Musical Discoveries program for students in Grades 1-3 and comprised two sold-out concerts with more than 3,600 students attending. This year’s program, Around the World with Manny Tuba featured WSO mascot Manny Tuba and local children’s entertainer Mr. Mark as they travelled the world in search of making new friends, playing new

instruments and enjoying new music from different countries and cultures. Guest artists in these concerts included ballet dancers, an aerialist, an Indigenous hoop dancer and drummer, Ukrainian dancers, and WSO musician Christopher Anstey on fiddle. Teachers received a curriculum-based Study Guide that included comprehensive lesson plans to introduce and strengthen the children’s understanding of the music and to prepare them for their experience.

Adventures in Music, the WSO’s widest-reaching and most comprehensive education program, presented eight concerts in February and March at the Centennial Concert Hall, including one in French, and two concerts in May at the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium in Brandon. Thanks to the Richardson Foundation, the WSO’s Adventures in Music was brought to Brandon. Over 14,600 elementary school students, primarily in grades 4 – 6, attended Adventures in Music. Orchestra Games, the title of this season’s Adventures in Music, highlighted various countries, exploring their music and movement, both artistic and athletic, in celebration through the theme of the upcoming 2016 Summer

Games. Led by Resident Conductor Julian Pellicano, these concerts included more than 500 students performing alongside the WSO in choir, recorder and string ensembles. These concerts also featured student artwork, during the performance Estacio’s Frenergy. This art was created using the piece as inspiration and a comprehensive lesson as guidance.

Prior to each Great-West Life Kids Concert, the WSO presents a full hour of pre-concert activities for children aged 4-9. These engaging activities, provided in partnership with Music for Young Children, include a craft station, rhythm ensembles, a movement station, an instrument petting zoo, and a conducting station. WSO mascot Manny Tuba attends each concert, inviting children to learn about music, pose for pictures, and bring their friends. Highlights from this year’s season of Great-West Life Kids Concerts include the exciting Disney FANTASIA presentation as well as the Icelandic story Maximus Musicus Visits the Orchestra.

Student Matinees are a terrific opportunity for young musicians to visit the Centennial Concert Hall during the day and experience the WSO in a more compact fashion. Four matinees were presented in 2015-2016 and students from all across Manitoba came to enjoy a 15-minute pre-concert chat presented by WSO Resident Conductor Julian Pellicano, followed by an introduction to the repertoire by the conductor, an open-mic rehearsal period where the conductor’s comments are heard by the audience and then a full performance of the work. The experience concludes with an on-stage Q&A with the conductor, providing an opportunity for students to ask those burning questions about life as a musician and a conductor, about the orchestra and the music. Teachers appreciate the 90-minute time-frame of these matinees, the accessible price and the comprehensive, curriculum-based lesson plans that WSO provides to help teachers prepare their students and deepen their understanding of the repertoire and the historical context of the music they will hear.

The full WSO visited six Winnipeg high schools in fall 2016, performing an interactive and engaging one-hour Up Close & Orchestral concert for nearly 4,000 students. Hosted by Alexander Mickelthwate, this program is designed to showcase the orchestra and inspire students to hear more through exciting symphonic repertoire, and several opportunities for students to participate directly in the concert as anvil soloists in Verdi’s Anvil Chorus and even as guest conductor of the WSO.

Emerging artists are an important part of WSO’s service to the community, and the 2015 Soloist Training Program winner was flautist Subin Cho. A graduate of Sturgeon Heights Collegiate, and a second year flute student at the University of Manitoba Desautels Faculty of Music, Cho received coaching from WSO Principal Flute Jan Kocman and performed as student soloist in the Up Close & Orchestral program at all six high school concerts, including a concert for peers at her alma mater, Sturgeon Heights Collegiate. Many of WSO’s past solo competition winners have gone on to develop successful careers as professional

musicians, including Keith Dyrda who toured with the Canadian Brass and is now WSO’s second Trombone.

In what was a highly-anticipated and highly successful collaboration, the Winnipeg Youth Symphony (WYS), directed by WSO Principal Viola Dan Scholz, joined forces with the WSO to perform Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 as part of the MTS Rising Stars program at the WSO’s Russian Fireworks concerts. The opportunity and thrill to perform side-by-side with WSO was an incredible opportunity that the over 50 WYS students will not soon forget. WSO Resident Conductor Julian Pellicano and Music Director Alexander Mickelthwate visited the WYS in rehearsal to assist with preparation for this ground-breaking performance. The mentorship and camaraderie that took place as a result of this opportunity were incredible.

The WSO and the River East Transcona School Division continued their unique and powerful partnership to create a wonderful concert showcasing

the incredible student talent from within the school division to a sold-out audience. Over 600 students sang with the orchestra in three different choirs, including a visually stunning and incredibly musical arrangement for the early years choir and boom whackers. Student art was featured in on-stage projection as well as in an immersive art gallery throughout Centennial Concert Hall. Hosted by Resident Conductor Julian Pellicano, this multi-media and multidisciplinary concert is the culmination of countless hours’ work from all 45 schools in the River East Transcona school division and is the hallmark of this special partnership.

In partnership with the University of Manitoba Desautels Faculty of Music, the Mentorship program brings WSO musicians on campus to assist University of Manitoba Symphony Orchestra musicians in their concert preparations and in their development as aspiring professional musicians. Mentors run sectionals and sit-in rehearsals to provide guidance and inspiration.

The Winnipeg New Music Festival (WNMF) creates a very special environment in which many of the world’s pre-eminent composers converge on Winnipeg for a short period of time. This is an incredible opportunity for young and emerging composers and musicians to interact with these cutting-edge composers and performers and at the 2016 WNMF, several hundred students experienced open rehearsals, chats and Q&A’s with composers and guest artists and received school visits from guest composers and WSO’s new Composer-in-Residence. A limited number of special on-stage ‘Tweet Seats’ provided students the opportunity to live-tweet their WNMF experiences from an on-stage perspective. The Sinking of the Titanic concert at Pan-Am pool was an incredibly memorable event and was made possible by an incredible team of over 20 student volunteers from Miles MacDonell Collegiate.

Sistema WinnipegSistema Winnipeg is an inclusive and intensive orchestral program that focuses on children with the fewest resources and greatest need. The program delivers free musical training to children after school for three hours a day, five days a week. Sistema Winnipeg encourages children to reach their full potential and inspires greater social change within the community.

2015-2016 marked the fifth year of Sistema Winnipeg. There are now 120 students in Grades 1-7 receiving diverse music education and instruction on orchestral string instruments. The program is delivered at two schools in partnership with Seven Oaks School Divison and Winnipeg School Division, in Winnipeg’s inner city and North End.

This year brought many exciting opportunities for Sistema Winnipeg students. Ensembles performed more than 20 times in the community at various

events. Prominent performances included Cavalia’s Odysseo, Winnipeg New Music Festival’s Sinking of the Titanic, Manitoba Association of School Superintendents, Child Nutrition Council of Manitoba, WSO’s A Prairie Christmas Celebration and Camerata Nova’s Nortendluvsongs.

In addition, Sistema Winnipeg showcased the dedication of all 120 students at two term-end concerts in November and May. For a second year, the WSO and Sistema Winnipeg hosted a successful Changing Lives Through Music fundraiser, which saw the symphony performing in the community that Sistema serves. The concert featured special guests Ismaila Alfa from CBC, soprano Lara Ciekiewicz, singer-songwriters Don Amero and Raine Hamilton, and the Elwick School Pow Wow Club.

This year, Sistema Winnipeg began an exciting new partnership with the Pow Wow Club at Elwick School.

Sistema students attended Pow Wow sessions bi-weekly, learning about Indigenous music and cultural practices. Since 40% of Sistema students come from an Indigenous background, the WSO looks forward to further collaboration next season.

The WSO remains strongly committed to the success and growth of Sistema Winnipeg. This season, the WSO created a Sistema Winnipeg Manager position responsible for overseeing the administration of the program. This position has greatly improved support for the program and created more opportunity to pursue future growth. The new manager, Shannon Darby, previously taught in Sistema and worked in the WSO’s Education & Community Engagement department.

Community Engagement Programs

Culture Days took place across the country on the weekend of September 26-28, 2015. The WSO held an event on September 27 in partnership with Manitoba Opera, the Centennial Concert Hall and Music for Young Children. This included an open house at the Concert Hall with tours, a chance to pick your seat, try on costumes, performances by the Manitoba Opera and Music for Young Children, and child-friendly music activities.

Musicians in the Making provides young and emerging performers an important opportunity to perform prior to select WSO concerts on the Piano Nobile and other locations at the Centennial Concert Hall and the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium. In 2015-2016, 36 groups, including young and advanced students from many teaching studios and institutions across Manitoba as well as the nearly 100-piece Manitoba Band Association Christmas Tuba Festival performed, totalling over 380 individual performers. WSO’s Trumpet Festival provided a unique opportunity to engage some new ensembles including the

Salvation Army Heritage Park Temple Brass Band, the Rupertsland Brass Band, and Blaskapelle.

The Musicians in Healthcare program offered musical presentations by a WSO string quartet at various healthcare centres across Winnipeg. Through the performance of live music, this program promotes the health and healing of hospital patients, visitors and staff in the community.

The WSO regularly packs up instruments and musicians and heads out on the open road to take the full orchestra to communities throughout the province and beyond. Our regular concert series in Brandon presented a wide range of musical offerings in four concerts, ensuring that music lovers in the Western regions of Manitoba can experience the wonder of live symphonic music.

The 2015 Power Smart Holiday Tour brought Holiday cheer to rural Manitoba communities in December 2015: Steinbach, Virden, Portage la Prairie, and Winkler. These cherished sold-out, or nearly sold-out,

performances provide members of the community the opportunity to perform with the WSO as narrator in the reading of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas and in a sing-along of carols. Piano and violin duo Roy and Rosemary were featured guest artists, much to the delight of audiences.

As always, the WSO continues to explore touring opportunities in the province to ensure that all Manitobans may regard the orchestra as their own.

The newly-formed Community Engagement Ensemble provided a unique opportunity to engage audiences in new ways and in new venues. In 2016-2017, this eclectic folk-classical fusion ensemble performed for students at the University of Winnipeg, University of Manitoba and Red River College as well as in Winnipeg Square, inspiring passers-by to seek more information about Soundcheck and WSO concerts.

The Soundcheck program offers young people aged 30 and under, or those who are full-time students, the opportunity to enjoy WSO concerts for just $17 per

concert. In the 2015-2016 season, the Soundcheck membership stayed strong with over 3,000 members. The program kicked off the year on September 18th with the signature Dust off the Dress event. More than 250 young members and guests came dressed to the nines to celebrate the launch of the WSO season and mingle with WSO musicians and the music director. The event was augmented by the Aveda Institute Pop-Up Beauty Bar, selfie station, live jazz and a cocktail reception. The Soundcheck program also hosted a pre-concert Backstage Tour & Reception in the Green Room along with a chance to mingle with WSO musicians and Music Director Alexander Mickelthwate at the SoundBytes series presentation of Elgar’s Enigma Variations. The special events concluded with a post-concert reception and Q&A featuring delicious food from Red River College’s Culinary Arts Institute and a panel of musicians and artists, hosted by Resident Conductor Julian Pellicano.

Share the Music is a unique partnership with community organizations that enables economically disadvantaged children, their families, and adults to attend WSO performances. Because of the generous donations by corporations and individuals, more than 2,000 tickets were provided across the province this season. The organizations distribute these tickets free-of-charge to people who want to experience the WSO.

Opportunities for emerging artists remains a focus for the WSO, and in the 2016 Summer Season, the WSO provided opportunities for a plethora of soloists with the orchestra at the Lyric Theatre, in Kenora and at WSO’s Made in Manitoba concert. In addition to featuring the two top trophy winners from the 2016 Winnipeg Music Festival, and the top trophy winner from the Brandon Festival of the Arts, special community guest soloists included Marcel Desautels, and Member of Parliament Robert-Falcon Ouellette.

The WSO remains committed to expanding its community impact and engaged in countless other

initiatives and opportunities throughout 2015-2016 including I Love to Read Month, the Parents & Kids Show, Teddy Bear’s Picnic, KidsFest, Manitoba Provincial Honour Choir and Honour Bands, by providing guest-speakers at various evens and institutions and interacting with educators at the Long & McQuade and St John’s Music reading clinics as well as the CMEA National Conference, the Manitoba Music Conference, to name a few.

The orchestra continued to forge artistic connections with the community in several notable partnerships. The ongoing success of the WSO’s annual collaboration with the River East Transcona School Division was again in evidence for a sold-out November concert in the Centennial Concert Hall. Local students and teachers partnered with the WSO in this program.

To help celebrate the 20th anniversary season of Camerata Nova, WSO musicians joined the group for two special performances of Michael Praetorius’s Christmas Mass at Westminster United Church. Partnering with the Winnipeg Philharmonic Choir within its series, our players appeared in a performance of Mendelssohn’s Lobgesang (Hymn of Praise) at St. Boniface Cathedral in March. Our ongoing partnership with Pembina Trails School Division featured their choirs at our annual Holiday Concert in December.

In April, the full WSO again partnered with the Women’s Musical Club of Winnipeg for the 2016 WMC McLellan Competition for Solo Performance with the WSO. Created in 2005 and held every two years, the WSO is delighted to have been alongside the WMC since day one of this prestigious event. Also in April, the Winnipeg Youth Symphony Orchestra joined forces with the WSO in a performance of Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 in the Classics series.

The longstanding highly successful Virtuosi Concerts continued its partnership with the WSO at the University of Winnipeg’s (U of W) Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall and presenting WSO musicians at the U of W’s Skywalk Concerts held at the Winnipeg Public Library. We look forward to an ongoing relationship with the University of Winnipeg in presenting exciting theme-based programs for Virtuosi Concerts.

Artistic and Community Partnerships

Summer appearances found the WSO performing at the Lyric Theatre in Assiniboine Park, The Forks on Canada Day and its annual appearance at Kenora’s dockside Lucia Melnick Stage. The orchestra’s Made in Manitoba Winnipeg concert featured Manitoba music competition-winners on the thresholds of their careers.

The WSO continues to serve as the musical foundation for Manitoba Opera and The Royal Winnipeg Ballet, bringing to their audiences the full symphonic resources their productions require.
