2015 AMERICAN TROMBONE WORKSHOP

Welcome to the 2015 United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” American Trombone Workshop (ATW). The workshop has a 40-year history as the Eastern Trombone Workshop, but the new name better reflects the scope of the event. The American Trombone Workshop continues the tradition of hosting leading soloists, clinicians, and educators, while also showcasing trombone choirs and emerging young performers through our competitions. This year’s world-class lineup includes Megumi Kanda, Brian Hecht, James Nova, Vanessa Fralick, Ben McIlwain, Steve Davis, and the Triton Brass Quintet. Additionally, James Nova will be featured on his arrangements of iconic film music by John Williams with the Washington Trombone Ensemble.

Our national solo jazz competition has an additional age division, and don’t miss performances of the trombone jazz ensemble and trombone quartet competition winners. Hear National Symphony Orchestra principal trombonist, Craig Mulcahy, in recital where he will present this year’s ATW Composition Competition winner.

Join us for group warm-up sessions and peruse a wide range of instruments, accessories, and sheet music at our Community Center. All workshop events will be web-streamed at usarmyband.com and archived on YouTube for those who are unable to attend. I hope you will enjoy your visit to Brucker Hall and leave with fond memories of great performances, new insights and lasting friendships.

Tony Baker, University of North TexasTony Garcia, Virginia Commonwealth UniversityMSG (ret.) Bill Holmes, The U.S. Army Blues

It’s a common scenario: a young student walks into a lesson with a chart from Jazz Band containing a few choruses of improvisation. Can you help them? How much can you cover in a 30-minute lesson? Many teachers face this situation every year, and often struggle with the delicate balance between results-oriented instruction and the possibility of overwhelming the student. How do you teach improv from scratch?

Our panel consists of an educator from one of the nation’s most respected collegiate Jazz programs, a state university professor with an outstanding reputation in the education community for engaging high school and middle school musicians, and a 30-year veteran of The U.S. Army Blues with over three decades of Jazz education experience in private lesson settings.
