Largest-Ever Midwest Energy Solutions ConferenceWith more than 650 energy professionals in attendance, the 2016 Midwest Energy Solutions Conference (MES) was our largest event to date. The three-day conference emphasized new approaches and innovative collaborations to achieve energy savings.

In its 14th year, the 2016 conference offered an expanded lineup of sessions, a new demo stage in the Expo Hall and panelists and insights from across the globe.

Thanks to the support of our sponsors, exhibitors, speakers and attendees, MES continues to be an unparalleled networking opportunity and the premier energy efficiency event in the region.

2015 Midwest Energy Data and Building Codes Conference MEEA’s 6th Annual Midwest Energy Data and Building Codes Conference convened in Minneapolis in November 2015. The three-day event allowed experts to share best practices in benchmarking, codes adoption and compliance. The energy data sessions nearly doubled in attendance from 2014, reflecting the industry’s growing investment in building performance.

Annual Meeting of the MembershipThe 2015 MEEA Annual Meeting emphasized the culture of innovation sweeping the industry, from new products and services to creative funding models. MEEA members gathered in Minneapolis in June 2015 to strengthen relationships, discuss industry trends and elect the new MEEA Board of Directors. Members also spent time talking about the future and how we can work together to ensure that investment and support for energy efficiency continue to grow.

The Midwest is one of the strongest regions for energy efficiency in the country with an annual investment of more than $1.8 billion in 13 states in 2015. That strength reflects tremendous growth since MEEA was established in 2000 to promote and support energy efficiency in the Midwest. At that time, regional investment just barely exceeded $150 million and was focused in only 3 states.

MEEA has grown with the region’s energy efficiency progress and it’s time to look ahead to the next 15 years. We’ve spent the last year reviewing and refreshing MEEA’s mission and vision, updating the strategic plan through 2020 and creating a new look. MEEA continues to be the trusted source on energy efficiency.

In 2015, we hosted our largest Midwest Energy Solutions Conference ever, while growing our membership to more than 160 organizations. We adjusted our program offerings to better serve our members, partners and communities with a more narrow focus on: training and education, collaboratives and market transformation. We continued to expand our policy role and educate key decision-makers on the energy efficiency policies that have the greatest positive impact.

We take this opportunity to celebrate 2015’s achievements and look with optimism at the future growth and success of our regional energy efficiency community. With your support, we will continue to advance energy efficiency in the Midwest for sustainable economic development and environmental stewardship.

Advocating to Legislators• Met with nearly 20 legislators in Lansing, MI to

promote the benefits and impact of Michigan’s Energy Optimization Standard.

• Submitted testimony to Michigan House and Senate committees highlighting the value of the existing Energy Optimization Standard and advocating for a combined Energy Optimization Standard and integrated resource planning process.

• Met individually with members of the Ohio Energy Mandates Study Committee to provide a regional perspective on energy efficiency and promote the economic impact of energy efficiency policies, including corresponding job growth.

• Hosted a legislative breakfast in Illinois to showcase individual company case studies to demonstrate economic benefits of the state’s energy efficiency policies.

Promoting Energy Efficiency• Submitted multiple sets of comments to the

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on the importance and potential impact of allowing energy efficiency as a compliance option under the proposed Clean Power Plan and for the Clean Energy Incentive Program.

• Kicked off a two-year, stakeholder-driven project with the Kentucky Department for Energy Development and Independence (DEDI) to identify better ways to track and report efficiency investments and savings. In October 2015, MEEA and DEDI released the report, “Considerations for a Statewide Evaluation, Measurement, and Verification Framework for Energy Efficiency in Kentucky.”

• Educated regional, state and local advocacy groups, including state chapters of the U.S. Green Building Council, the Midwest Energy

Resource Center, the Illinois Stakeholder Advisory Group and RE-AMP on energy efficiency policies and their associated benefits.

Supporting Efficiency Through Building Codes and Energy DataMEEA’s expertise with building energy code adoption, statewide code compliance studies, code collaboratives and benchmarking policies positively influenced building efficiency throughout the Midwest• Provided testimony and supported adoption of

residential and/or commercial building energy codes in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan.

• Facilitated two statewide energy code collaboratives in Nebraska and Minnesota, creating a forum for stakeholders to develop new opportunities and programs for code training and compliance and other ways to support increased energy savings.

• Managed a U.S. Department of Energy grant to complete a residential code compliance study in Kentucky, which led to the discovery of key areas of improvement for future training initiatives.

• Assisted the City of Evanston, IL in developing a benchmarking ordinance and provided critical assistance to stakeholders in Kansas City, MO and Madison, WI for the passage and implementation of a benchmarking ordinance.

• Facilitated, with the U.S. Green Building Council, the “CHA Energy Data Jam,” a training workshop where certified energy data professionals assisted the Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) as it benchmarked its buildings to comply with the City of Chicago Benchmarking Ordinance.

Policy Highlights

As the Midwest’s principal proponent, information source and networking forum for energy efficiency policy, MEEA educates and advises a diverse set of stakeholders on new and meaningful ways to pursue an achievable and cost-effective energy-efficient agenda. In 2015, MEEA focused on demonstrating the positive economic benefits of existing energy efficiency policies across the region.

Cogged v-belt PilotIn 2015, MEEA, in collaboration with AEP Ohio, Dayton Power & Light, Argonne National Laboratory and other partners, coordinated the successful design and execution of a novel upstream incentive pilot in Ohio focused on cogged v-belts. MEEA guided the process from initial concept, to recruiting distributors, to designing incentives and to collecting and analyzing data.

Building America ResearchMEEA, alongside the Gas Technology Institute and the University of Illinois, received a research grant through the U.S. Department of Energy to investigate a whole-house approach to improving indoor air quality during residential retrofits.

Data CentersIn 2015, the MEEA Data Center pilot provided in-depth energy analysis, pinpointing cost-effective measures and IT Infrastructure improvements at Argonne National Lab, Arlington Heights School District 25 and City of Chicago Public Safety Headquarters.

Savings Through Efficient Products (STEP) STEP breaks down the barriers that prevent public facilities from investing in energy improvements. The program, administered by MEEA, offers easy entry to Illinois Energy Now programs. In 2015, STEP’s 186 walkthroughs in Illinois resulted in installation of 8,777 products, delivering an estimated annual savings of 4,997,683 kWh and 157,822 therms.
