The year 2015 is proving to bean exciting transition year forthe American Shorthorn
Association. The Board of Directors andstaff have closely examined issues andactivities that will make the process ofregistering cattle easier while position-ing the breed for future success. I amvery impressed with the membership’sdesire to not only increase theShorthorn breed’s presence, but to alsoposition the breed as a whole to becomea larger force within the beef cattleindustry.
Upcoming changes include a newregistry system that is scheduled to be inplace by June 1st. This state of the arttechnology will provide members acomplete management system withinthe registry. The new system will allowregistrations, transfer, and performancedata entry to be completed with ease. The upgraded system will be far moreuser friendly than the current systemand will encourage breeders to complete100% of their work online. In additionto the new registry, the association islaunching a new website this year. Thewebsite will give Shorthorn a fresh,

modern online presence paired with auser friendly informational site. Alongwith the new website, ASA will unveil anew logo. The Board of Directors andcommittee members continue to placeemphasis on rules and regulations thatwill enhance and protect our breedimage both inside and outside theShorthorn breed. Our Board ofDirectors takes very seriously theresponsibility of leading the Shorthornbreed in the right direction. This year we will launch the Impact
2015 Conference. A large committeehas been working to provide ideas andtopics that the breed will examine at
Impact 2015Shorthorn BreedConference andAnnual Meeting. The conference
will feature a wide variety of activities, educational sessions, and discussionopportunities for breeders. Impact 2015will be held the first week in December.Mark your calendars to be at Harrah’sHotel & Casino in Kansas City,Missouri on December 3-5, 2015; youwon’t want to miss this event.
Impact 2015 Shorthorn Breed Conference and Annual Meeting
Impact 2015 will encompass educa-tional information about future needsof the breed from the Show Ring to theBeef Cattle industry. How can ourbreed become a bigger player in the beefindustry as a whole? This question willbe examined by evaluating our breed’sstrengths and weaknesses. GenomicEPDs and how to use Indexes builtfrom EPDs will be featured. Severalpanels will be assembled to represent thebeef industry as a whole. Panelists willrange from show judges to Shorthornbreeders to industry specialists. Eachpanelist will share insights about thebeef industry and how the Shorthornbreed can best fit into the puzzle. There
will be work-shops formembers tolearn the newregistry systemalong withunderstandingany rule
changes. This Conference and Annualmeeting will be a culmination of a yearthat could be the beginning of the“NEW SHORTHORN”.The Conference Committee and Boardof Directors are positive about holdingthe annual meeting in conjunction withthis conference. This time of Shorthornfellowship will allow breeders to giveserious consideration to the materialbeing presented in a fun atmosphereaway from a busy show setting. Thepossibility of having a banquet with theannual meeting is being considered. Ifeel this will also be a good time toincorporate a State Presidents Council,in conjunction with the Annual
Meeting. TheState President’sCouncil will becomprised ofeach state asso-ciation’s presi-dent; the objec-tive is to provideinput and sug-
gestions to the Board of Directors andstaff of the American ShorthornAssociation. The group will receive

The American Shorthorn Associationwould like to thank everyone whoparticipated in the new RegionalShorthorn Show System last year. Wehad many positive commentsthroughout the year and saw entriesincrease at several shows that wereincluded in the regional show rotation. With any new program improvementsand tweaks always need to be made tocontinually advance the program, theRegional Show System was notimmune to this and we had to make afew changes that I will outline in thenext couple paragraphs. I think thesechanges will strengthen the showsystem and encourage moreparticipation. The biggest change you will notice
for the upcoming show season is theaddition of three Tier II National
Shows. The Tier II National Shows willbe held at the American Royal,Keystone International LivestockExposition and the Fort Worth StockShow. Points earned at these shows areessentially bonus points that will beused towards an animal’s regionalpoints. The other big change is the addition
of cow/calf classes to the open show, wewill now offer classes for two-year-oldpairs and a separate class for 3-4 yearold pairs. A Champion and ReserveCow/Calf Pair will be chosen and thencompete against the Champion andReserve Heifers for the title of SupremeChampion Shorthorn Female in theshow. The cow and calf must both bepurebred and the calf cannot be over280 days of age on the day of the show. Other than show day, check-in day

can be second most stressful day at theshow. Now checking-in will be easierbecause we will no longer be verifyingtattoos all you will need to provide theASA Staff with is a registration numberand a date of birth for each of yourentries to be checked in for the show. All Champion and Reserve Division
winners from the bull and female showswill have DNA collected to verifyparentage. In addition any female inthe champion drive that is over 20months of age and does not have a calfat side will have blood drawn in orderto verify that the animal meets thepregnancy requirement. We hope these changes will
encourage more participation at theregional level and get Shorthorns out inthe public eye. Best of luck to everyonethis upcoming show season!
(continued from page 8.)communications from the Board ofDirectors and staff members to relayback to their state associations. Thisgroup’s goal is to better our breedthrough additional lines ofcommunication. I hope the StatePresidents Council will become an
annual get-together.
Scheduling for Impact 2015 isunderway; additional meetings/eventswill be added as they are finalized. Iwant to emphasize the importance tobe part of this inaugural event. Therehave been many exciting changes occurwithin the Shorthorn breed the last
several years and there will be more inthe future. We mustp r e p a r eand be
ready to regain our rightful place in thebeef industry. Join us in Kansas City tomake an Impact!

To many breeds, and the generalpublic, the National Shorthorn LassieQueen attire may seem daunting oreven difficult to wear. Over the courseof my reign, as NationalS h o r t h o r nLassie Queenin 2012, Imust havebeen askedover ah u n d r e dquestions frompassersby andeven members, producers, andbreeders fromour own breedinquiring how Idid it, or thepurpose behind “The Outfit.” It’s noteveryday you see a young lady sportinga traditional kilt and crown at yourlocal eatery. The life of a kilt is an
intriguing one that even I didn’tunderstand at first. From the very firstmoment I slipped one on over myblack stockings and leather boots, I was
transformed. When I traveled to
Scotland a fewyears ago, I wasable toexperience andwitness themaking of aScottish kilt atthe HighlandHouse ofFraser, ScottishK i l t m a k e rVisitor Centerin Inverness.
The Kilt itself is madefrom nine yards of tartan woven inScotland; the term “the whole nineyards” derived from the abundance ofmaterial used. There are many details
that go into themaking of a kilt thatcreates such anamazing piece ofh i s t o r y .Each hand-sewn stichis made tobe small, even, tighta n dh i d d e n .Every kilti sdelicatelyh a n d -m a d eand takesup to 15-20 hoursfor a professionalseamstress tocomplete; this is nosmall task. The 29pleats aremeticulously placedto ensure the properfit and comfort ofeach kilt. There aredifferent types ofpleats, depending onyour preference, butthe pleats we chose touse are called knifepleats that arepermanently pressed
“A Kilt Fit For A Queen”By: Jessica McCall
and are made to sett in our outfit. What this means (by the term sett) isthat the repeat of the tartan ismaintained even though the fabric hasbeen pleated.
The Kilt isS c o t l a n d ’ sd i s t i n c t i v enational dressand is thesymbol ofhonor for theclan, to whichthey belong,depending onthe tartan (orcolor). Forexample, ourb r e e ds p e c i f i c a l l y
uses the Royal Stuart Tartan (theofficial tartan for Britain’s Royal family)to show that Shorthorn improvementswere made through cattle importeddirectly from Scotland. The term “kilt”itself actually means to tuck upclothing around the body and is a
derivative from an Old Norse“ k j i l t ”m e a n i n gpleated. TheL a s s i eQueens wearwhat is calledthe “feileadhbeag” (smallkilt) which isthe modernv e r s i o ntailored toeach specificperson. As National
Lassie Queen I wanted to be the bestrepresentative that I could possibly beto help promote our breed in a mannerthat every young girl can look up to.The few girls who have been honoredto represent our breed have alwaysperformed their duties with poise andgrace. Our outfit is what helps separateus from the other National Queens.Ladies, we have a tradition to uphold.Wearing the kilt is an experience youwill never forget and will come withmany adventures and new friends alongthe way. =

Since writing last month’s article Ihave visited some very diverse regionsin Texas and California. I departedfrom NCBA with Brandon and RachelCutrer to visit V8 Ranch. V8’sreputation in the cattle world isdeserved and evident, especially in theBrahman herd. I think a big part of V8ssuccess has been their clever andforward thinking marketing, such asusing snapchat. Datar e c o r d i n gparticularly ofcarcase traitshas been a bigarea of growthat V8 and hasbeen verysuccessful. Ithink it isimportant to recognise that data is notonly a selection tool but also animportant marketing tool as anaccurate set of EPDs can increase buyerconfidence. My next destination was Bill and
Becky Rasors, WHR Shorthorns at VanAlstyne. I found a very stylish herd thathad provided the backbone for WHR’sshow ring success. There is no doubt agreat deal of attention to detail occurs, tireless hours are spent to achieve theperfect photo. I was lucky enough toget caught in an ice storm buteventually found myself on a plane tosunny California. Where I was greetedby the Albiani Family at Elk Grove, andquickly put to work in the State Fairsoffice. My success as a secretary waslimited, but I did gain a greater
understanding of what positiveoutcomes can arise from the showindustry and programs such as 4H. Iwill admit that since being in theU.S.A. I have been sceptical of theshow rings influence on Shorthorncattle. However I agree that the showindustry is a very important avenue foryouth development. Regardless of
whether juniors continueto pursue agriculture ornot, leadership, communication andconfidence are developed. The Albianis are also agood example of howbreeding and showingcattle is a valuable familypursuit. My California home
base has been Sunny Day Shorthorns.Thank you to the Gipe Family forcoordinating the hugechunk of California Ihave seen so far. Beforearriving I picturedCalifornia as beingHollywood, beaches, big trees and blondegirls. But after a littleeducation I can nowsee the incrediblediversity in California.I’ve seen the SaquoiaNational Park, LakeTahoe, Mt Shasta, brunettes and every agriculturalenterprise you can imagine. Sunny Day,Pluth and Dillabo Shorthorns all runcattle in steep foot hills. It’s a beautifulplace and grazing foothills ensuresstructural correctness.
Mike Mello took me for a tour ofseveral Tulare dairy’s. The scale, production and innovation is prettyamazing. Technology like measuringthe steps each cow takes to monitor thecows cycle I found really interesting. Itstill amazes me just how many foodchoices there are in America. Everysingle day I have tried a new food ordrink. While I was with the Poncetta’s Iwas lucky enough to visit the Baskrestaurant called “Wool Growers”where I tried ox tongue and ox tail.
Some notable foods Ihave had include gator, rocky mountain oysters, bison, bone in filetmignon, root beer milkand an unforgettablefried apple pie (thanksBill) to name a few. Ifyou’re going to host mein the future I wouldlove to try whatever is onoffer but at this rate Imight need an extra seat
on the plane home. I still have a bitmore time to spend in California andNevada before braving the cold east butthank you again to all my hosts, I’mhaving the time of my life. =

Yes, that’s right- it’s calving season, but it’s also the time of year whenShorthorn juniors across the countrydecide whether this is the year they willrun for the American Junior ShorthornAssociation Board of Directors. Myadvice for those who are thinking aboutrunning is to really go for it. Sit downand read the responsibilities andprocesses and if you have questions justask! Talk to a board member; call themor even send a text. We were all in thatsame position when we were runningfor the board. We know how it feels tobe nervous or to have questions. Coming from a state that hasn’t had
any one on the board for a long time, Ireally was forging my own path when Iran for the board and I wasn’t very sureon what to expect. There were manythings I wished I had known or wishcertain bits of advice were given to me.I wished someone would have told meto really put my heart into thequestions on the application and to notworry if people don’t feel the same way. It’s the passion that matters; that drivesyou. I wish someone would have toldme to study some of the history behindnot only the Shorthorn Association, but the Lassies as well, prior to going toJunior Nationals. Sometimes, I thinkthat I would have liked someone to tellme that it’s okay to just say that youdon’t know the answer to the questionif you simply don’t know during a Q &A session. Not everyone knows all ofthe answers. Also, make your candidateposter ahead of time and bring it with. You will be far too busy to throw onetogether that looks good. If you are notelected to the board, do not getdiscouraged. Sometimes it takes twotries. The second time around you aremuch more prepared and you have afeel for everything that is going on thenext time around. But finally, I think
the most important thing whenrunning as a candidate is to go out andtalk to other juniors, be friendly andoutgoing, and be yourself. When elected to the board you have
many responsibilities, but whencompleting those tasks you haveexperiences that you will never haveagain that are immensely fun and alongthe way you grow as a person. Whentraveling to your first AJSA event as aboard member, KEY conference, mostboard members fly. Some boardmembers, including myself, had neverflown before let alone flown alone. Ithink everyone remembers the firsttime they fly, but within your first yearon the board, you start feeling like anold pro at the airport. The next stop on the journey for
most junior board members, is theLeading a Legacy Sale in Dunlap, IA.Prior to the event, board membersmake phone calls and find donationsfor the Foundation Heifer and othersale lots. This is a time of networkingwith breeders from across the countrythat make an impact on the Shorthornbreed. This is the time when boardmembers recognize how much it reallytakes to put on an event like ShorthornJunior Nationals.N.A.I.L.E. and National Western
Stock Show come up very quickly afterthe Leading a Legacy sale. These twoevents are where board members get afeel for cattle check-in, lining upclasses, and working the show ring. It’salso where I learned to have acomfortable pair of boots! While at theNational Western, board members alsobegin looking for donations for theonline semen and embryo sale. But atthese shows, you truly bond and createfriendships with fellow board members.Friendships that will last a lifetime. Indown time, there is always something
comical or just a good time to be had. Then before you know it, it’s this
time of year again and the planning forJunior Nationals begins. Boardmembers congregate for a springplanning meeting- suggestions aremade and considered and sometimeschanges are made. Foundations are laidfor which board member will berunning each contest and who will behelping them. Then Junior Nationals really hits and
you truly run from one event to thenext. Junior Nationals is a very busyweek when you are competing incontests and in the show ring. Whenyou are on the board, you do both ofthose things, plus help put together andrun the contests that you are notcompeting in. Board members alsointeract with junior from across thecountry and they lead youthconferences. Besides all of the event planning and
meetings throughout the year, boardmembers are often found writing thankyou letters and postcards welcomingnew junior members into the juniorassociation. This is my last year as ajunior and I still have the postcard thatwas sent to me when I joined the juniorassociation. It’s the little things that wedo that sometimes mean the most.If any of these experiences sound
appealing to you, I really encourage youto run for the AJSA Board. You willnever regret it. Life is about experiencesand this is the experience of a lifetime.Applications for junior boardcandidates are due April 15th, theinformation is online atwww.juniorshorthorn.com/Leadership/jrboard.html. =
