Invest in your kitchen Kitchen remodels are a safe bet when it comes to putting money into improving a home. Residents tend to spend a great deal of time in the kitchen, but a dated, poorly functioning kitchen can detract from the value of a home, even if the rest of the home is in good shape. It’s possible to recoup between 60 and 120 percent of your kitchen remodel investment, especially if the kitchen matches up well with the rest of your home. Homeowners should know that a deluxe renovation may not be necessary, as relatively moderate improvements can create a whole new look for a kitchen.
Look to paintOne of the least expensive improvement materials, but one that has a significant impact, is paint. Neutral, modern colors can easily liven up any space. If you paint with low-VOC paint, you also can advertise an eco-friendly home, which is very desireable these days.
Put in another bathroomMultiple bathrooms are an attractive selling point, particularly in older homes that may not have been equipped with more than one bathroom. Finding extra space for a bathroom can be tricky, but consider closets, areas under stairs or even taking some space away from another room. Popular home-improvement televi-sion channel HGTV advises that half-bathrooms require at least 18 square feet of space, while full baths need 30 to 35 square feet for a stand-up shower or bathtub.
Renovate the HVaC systemAesthetic improvements aren’t the only ones that add value to a home. Many home buyers are eager to purchase a home that has a new heating and cooling system, as buyers understand that furnaces and air conditioning units are sub-stantial investments that can last for years. Other improvements, such as adding attic insulation or replacing older windows and doors with more energy efficient options, also are smart bets.
add illumination to roomsA dark home is a dreary home. Adding light can mean including more over-head and accent lighting. Under-cabinet task lighting is a nice touch. Inclusion of skylights and sun tubes can bring natural light into rooms that may not have south- or west-facing windows.
Put a deck addition outdoorsOutdoor living spaces have become more desireable, especially as the “staycation” has grown in popularity. Decks and patios can make backyards more appealing. The scope of your investment will depend on the size of the deck and design. Doing the work yourself can cut the cost of decks in half, but only if you have the specific tools or experience to tackle such a project.
Improve curb appealAdding attractive landscaping and freshening up the entryway to a home can add considerable value to your home, as buyers judge homes by their exteriors. Completely renovated interiors may never be seen if buyers pass up your home because of a less attractive exterior. Classy, subtle changes, like well-placed shrub-bery and a green lawn, can work wonders. An inviting front door and well-lit entryway also add curb appeal to a home.
Before making improvements, homeowners should determine if a given project will provide a solid return on their investment.

Avoiding such costly mistakes allows homeowners to fully enjoy their lawns. The following are a few landscaping mistakes homeowners may want to avoid so they can spend more time enjoying their land-scapes and less time working around the yard.
Planting the wrong trees and shrubsWhen planting new trees and shrubs around your property, choose variet-ies that won’t overwhelm the property by growing too large. Such trees and shrubs can mask other elements of a landscape, and they can also take a sub-stantial amount of effort to maintain. Avoid spending too much time prun-ing trees and shrubs by opting for those that only grow to a particular size.
Choosing non-native plantsIt’s always best to choose plants that are native to a particular region. Native plants have already adapted to the local climate, meaning they can withstand the worst weather that climate has to offer without homeowners having to put in much effort. For example, if you live in an area where drought is com-mon, avoid planting trees, shrubs, flowers, or grass that need ample amounts of water. Instead, opt for those varieties that can survive without significant amounts of water. Exotic plants might add aesthetic appeal to a property, but that appeal is often short-lived or costly to maintain when a plant is not in its native climate.
Too much lawnWhile a large and lush lawn appeals to many homeowners, a yard that is all grass can be difficult and expensive to maintain. Lawns without trees are susceptible to damage from the hot summer sun, and homeowners often respond to that threat by overwatering their lawns. Overwatering not only weakens root systems, but it also leads to higher water bills. Homeowners can downsize their lawns by planting more trees around the property, adding a garden in the backyard or even adding landscape features to their property.
Planting without a planWhen planting new trees around a property, some homeowners plant without first considering the ideal locations for new trees. This can prove an expensive mistake. Planting too close to your house may eventually threaten your home’s foundation, as roots grow deeper and deeper into the ground. Planting too close to a home also may prove a security threat down the road, when the tree has grown to full height. Such trees may threaten the home during a storm, so consult a landscaping professional when planting new trees so the trees are located in a place that does not threaten the value of your home or the safety of its residents.

Painting is one of the easiest and least expensive ways to transform the look of a space. The colors homeowners choose for their walls can give rooms their own unique feel and even affect the moods of the people within them.
Finding the right shade for a bedroom or kitchen involves more than just selecting the first color that catches your eye. Design experts and psychologists alike say it may be worthwhile to choose a color that helps you feel good rather than just following design trends. The paint color you pick may add energy to a space or create a tranquil retreat where you can unwind at the end of the day.
BlueTo create a spa-like environment and a more serene space, look to shades of blue in soft variations. Cool blues are soothing colors that can help lower stress levels and promote sleep. That’s why blue is a frequent fixture in bedrooms and bathrooms. Just be advised that too much blue can make a room appear cold and stark, so balance out blue with some warmer ac-cents.
OrangeMany people do not immediately consider bright orange for their homes, but when used as an accent shade, orange can really brighten up a home. Orange is considered a shade that expands creativity and imparts a youth-ful appeal to a space. Consider an orange accent wall or a burst of color with orange throw pillows. If pumpkin orange is a little too bold for you, tone it down by choosing a more pastel, peachy hue, which is equally warm and energizing.
redRed stimulates energy and appetite, which is why the shade is so popular in restaurants and home dining spaces. Red is a good choice for social gather-ing rooms but may not be the wisest choice for a bedroom, as the color may prove overstimulating.
greenGreen can evoke composure and tranquility and works in any room of the house. Since green is the primary color of nature, it also works well for those people who want to bring some of the outdoors inside and work with the fresh starts and new growth that green can inspire. To make green feel less subdued and sleepy, work with its complementary opposite, red, by using a few bold red accents here and there to balance out the tranquility of green.
PurPlePeople have long related purple to royalty, and this dramatic color can add a formal, regal aspect to a home depending on the hue. Purple also may help stimulate the creative side of the brain. In paler shades of lavender, purple can seem almost ethereal and spiritual. Some designers suggest avoiding purple in a bedroom because that is a place you want your brain to rest rather than be stimulated.
YellOwFew colors are more vibrant than yellow, which can help stimulate conver-sation and make thoughts more focused. A luminous shade of yellow is an ideal way to make any space more welcoming and bright. Just use it spar-ingly, as too much yellow may not be a good thing. Yellow accents mixed with touches of purple can offer the balance needed to prevent yellow rooms from overwhelming residents and guests.
Home decorators should keep in mind that colors can be blended to create the desired environment. A color scheme based on complementary colors, or those opposite on the color wheel, may fit. Otherwise, analogous color schemes, or those colors that are next to one another on the color wheel, can create a variation that suits your design needs.

Many adults understand the joy of garden-ing, but gardening can be equally fun for children as well. While some adults may feel that certain children do not have the patience or perseverance to see plants grow from seeds to adulthood, selecting plants that are hardy and sprout quickly may be the key to igniting a love of gardening in children.
Choosing seeds that sprout quickly can hold the attention of children who are new to gardening. Many different plants fit this bill. Beans, peas, sunflower seeds, and bell pepper seeds are easy to start and germinate quickly. In addition, many leafy vegetables, such as chard, lettuce, spinach, and mustard, germi-nate in three to five days. Herbs, such as basil and parsley, also sprout fast. All of these plants are good options for introducing children to gardening, as each provides quick gratification.
To further interest children, it is a good idea to plant seeds in a way that allows youngsters to monitor the progress of growth. Use a
transparent container, such as rinsed-out glass jars and canisters, to house the plant. Such containers give kids an unobstructed
view of the process, during which children can plot the progress of seed germination and easily spot root and stem development. Once the seedlings grow larger, they can be transplanted into different containers.
Many seedlings can sprout with water alone. Children can easily grow new plants from clippings of a mature plant left resting in a shallow cup of water, and seeds
may not even need soil to germinate. Kids may have luck sprinkling seeds on a dampened, crumpled-up piece of paper towel. Cotton balls also make a good place to nestle seeds. Either material will hold on to water, keeping the seeds moist until they sprout. Afterward, the seedlings can be carefully moved into a soil-and-compost mix. The paper towel and the cotton balls will decompose and add to the organic matter already in the soil.
Edible plants often make good choices for children because kids can reap the rewards of their efforts. Herbs can be sprinkled onto food, or fruits and vegetables can be grown in containers and then served at mealtime. Kids can show pride in their accomplishments, especially if they have tangible results on the dinner plate.
Children who want to try something differ-ent can explore other types of plants. Aquatic plants, or those found at the pet store to grow in aquariums, can be easy to grow. They need little more than a container, fresh water and sunlight. Cacti and other succulents are also fun to explore. These plants are quite hardy in that they can stand up to moderate abuse, such as failure to water frequently enough. The unique appearance of cacti make them inter-esting focal points for an indoor garden.
A love of gardening that’s fostered inside can also be explored outdoors. Set aside a plot of dirt where kids can sow their own seeds and tend to their own gardens. This hobby can help children learn patience and hard work while fostering an appreciation of nature.

When buying carpet for the first time, homeowners can be overwhelmed with unfamiliar terminology. Navigating such terminology, not to mention the
vast array of options inside typical carpeting stores, can be difficult and make carpet buyers nervous
about making the right decision.
Carpet fibersWhen a carpet salesman or store employee references “carpet fiber,” he or she is referring to the type of material used to make a particular car-pet. No two fibers are the same, as each feels different to the touch and reacts to routine wear and tear differently. Here are the five most popular carpet fibers:
Nylon: Nylon is the most durable carpet fiber, and that has contrib-uted to its popularity. Nylon is available in a wide range of styles and is a flexible material. Many nylon carpets come with a stain-resistant treat-ment to protect the material from common stains and spills.
Polyester: Highly resistant to stains and fading, polyester is soft, and today’s polyester carpets are more resilient and durable than those of yesteryear.
Triexta: Triexta is a type of polyester fiber that is especially soft. A relatively recent addition to the market, triexta carpet fibers are espe-cially susceptible to stains and spills.
Olefin: Olefin carpet fibers are among the least expensive, thanks in part to its lack of durability compared to other fibers. Olefin carpet fibers repel UV rays and therefore don’t fade when exposed to sunlight.
Wool: Wool tends to be the most expensive carpet fiber, but that cost is offset by its considerable durability and soft feel. Wool carpets can last several decades, but they also are high maintenance and not especially resistant to stains.
Carpet typesThe type, or style, of carpet refers to how the carpet is designed. The type of carpet homeowners choose may depend on where in their homes the carpet will be installed.
Frieze: Frieze carpet, sometimes referred to as twist carpet, is made of twisted strands of carpet, and many homeowners prefer frieze carpet because of its modern and stylish look. Frieze carpet can be somewhat expensive, which is why some homeowners install it in bedrooms and sitting rooms where it won’t be susceptible to high traffic.
Saxony/Cut pile: Saxony or cut pile carpet is ideal for high traffic areas, such as the living room or hallways. That’s because it tends to be resistant to matting and crushing and still feels soft underfoot.
Berber: Berber carpets, often referred to as loop carpets, are especially durable, making them strong options for high-traffic areas of a home. Though there are variations in loop carpets, a traditional loop carpet is created when yarn is sewn or tufted into the backing and left uncut.
Choosing a carpet for a home is no small task, but homeowners who educate themselves about the various carpet fibers and styles can find the right fit for their homes.

Home improvement projects can turn a house into a home. Homeowners plan scores of renovations to transform living spaces into rooms that reflect their per-sonal tastes and comforts.
But homeowners about to embark on home improvement projects can make the process go more smoothly by avoiding these common pitfalls.
Failing to understand the scope of the projectSome homeowners don’t realize just how big a commitment they have made until they get their hands dirty. But understanding the scope of the project, including how much demolition and reconstruction is involved and how much time a proj-ect will take can help homeowners avoid some of the stress that comes with reno-vation projects. For example, a bathroom renovation may require the removal of drywall, reinforcement of flooring to accommodate a new bathtub or shower enclosure and the installation of new plumbing and wiring behind walls. So such a renovation is far more detailed than simply replacing faucets.
Not establishing a budgetHomeowners must develop a project budget to ensure their projects do not drain their finances. If your budget is so inflexible that you can’t afford the materials you prefer, you may want to postpone the project and save more money so you can eventually afford to do it right.
Without a budget in place, it is easy to over-spend, and that can put you in financial peril down the line. Worrying about coming up with money to pay for materials and labor also can induce stress. Avoid the anxiety by setting a firm budget.
Making trendy or overpersonalimprovementsHomeowners who plan to stay in their homes for the long run have more free reign when it comes
to renovating their homes. Such homeowners can create a billiards room or paint a room hot pink if they so prefer. However, if the goal is to make improvements in order to sell a property, overly personal touches may make a property less appealing to prospective buyers. Trends come and go, and improvements can be expensive. If your ultimate goal is to sell your home, opt for renovations that will look beautiful through the ages and avoid bold choices that may only appeal to a select few buyers.
Forgetting to properly vet all workersIt is important to vet your contractor, but don’t forget to vet potential subcontrac-tors as well. Failing to do so can prove a costly mistake. Contractors often look to subcontractors to perform certain parts of a job, and it is the responsibility of homeowners to vet these workers.
Expecting everything to go as plannedOptimism is great, but you also should be a realist. Knowing what potentially could go wrong puts you in a better position to handle any problems should they arise. The project might go off with-out a hitch, but plan for a few hiccups along the way.
Overestimating DIY abilitiesOverzealous homeowners may see a renova-tion project in a magazine or on television and immediately think they can do the work themselves. Unless you have the tools and the skills necessary to do the work, tackling too much can be problematic. In the long run, leaving the work to a professional may save you money.
Home improvements can be stressful, but homeowners can lessen that stress by avoid-ing common renovation mistakes.

The following are a handful of options homeowners can consider as they look for ways to finance renovation projects.
Paying outrightPaying for the renovations upfront and in full is perhaps the simplest way to finance a project. Homeowners who have the cash to pay for renovations outright won’t have to worry about interest rates or balloon payments.
Mortgage refinancingSome homeowners tap into their home equity to cover home remodeling projects. Refinancing a mortgage means paying off the debt owed and starting over with a completely new loan. Refinancing comes with various fees and can cost between 3 and 6 percent of the loan’s principal.
Home equity loans and lines of creditBoth of these options are commonly referred to as second mortgages. When hom-eowners apply for home equity loans or lines of credit, they are borrowing against the equity value in their homes. A home equity loan is a term, or closed-end, loan. It is a one-time sum that will be paid off over a set amount of time with a fixed interest rate and the same payment each month. This is a one-time loan from which a person cannot borrow further. A home equity line of credit, or HELOC, is like having a credit card. It’s possible to borrow a certain amount for the life of the loan, which is a set time specified by the lender. During this time, homeown-ers can withdraw money as it is needed up to the value of the line of credit. HE-LOCs typically have a variable interest rate that fluctuates and payments can vary depending on the amount of money borrowed and the current interest rates.
Title I property loanResidents of the United States with limited equity in their homes may qualify for an FHA Title I loan. Banks and other lenders are qualified to make these loans from their own funds, and the FHA will insure the lender against a possible loss. Title I loans can be used for any improvements that will make a home more use-ful and livable. They cannot be used for renovations deemed luxury expenses.
Borrow against retirement fundsSome people opt to borrow against a 401(k) plan, IRA or another retirement fund. If the retirement plan allows a loan without penalty, it can be another way to secure funds. Because it is the homeowner’s money, there will be no credit check required and less delay in getting the funds. Borrowers should keep in mind that taking a loan against a retirement account will usually result in a lower retire-ment balance than it would have been had they not borrowed money from the account — even after the funds have been repaid.
Credit cardsCredit cards are an option when improvements are not expensive. Individuals with excellent credit ratings may qualify for cards with a no-interest introduc-tory periods of several months or more. These cards can be a good way to pay off moderate improvements in a short amount of time.
Many home renovation projects require homeowners to develop a home im-provement budget. Homeowners are urged to explore all options and find the least costly loan method and the one that will present the best possibility for avoiding debt.

GuttersGutters are vulnerable to winter weather, as strong winds may blow debris into the gutters or even blow the gutters off of the house. Gutters should be cleaned prior to and immediately after winter to ensure they’re working properly and not backing up to the point that water can build up and damage the roof. Reattach any loose gutters and clear them of any debris left behind by winter winds.
RoofThe roof is another area of your home’s exterior that may have been beaten down over the winter. Examine the roof for cracked, missing or deformed shingles that can allow water to enter a home and damage its interior. Some roof damage is visible from the ground, but homeowners who just endured especially harsh winters may want to climb up on their roofs or hire a profes-sional to get a closer look. Another way to determine if the roof was damaged is to go into your attic and check for water damage near roof trusses. Water damage indicates something went awry over the winter.
Walkways and driveways Heavy snowfall or significant accumulation of ice over the winter can result in cracked or damaged walkways, driveways and porches. Some of this damage may have resulted from aggressive shoveling or breaking up of ice. Look for any cracks in areas that needed shoveling over the winter, as such cracks can be safety hazards and may even prove to be entry points into your home for water or critters.
Landscaping Landscaping also tends to take a hit in areas that experience harsh winters. Winter storms may damage trees, which can put a home right in the line of falling limbs or worse. Walk around your property to inspect for tree damage, removing any fallen limbs or cutting down any limbs that appear dead or that might eventually prove a safety hazard. In addition, check the grass for any dead spots that might have fallen victim to winter freeze, and address those spots when the time comes to revitalize your lawn.
appliances When surveying your property after a long winter, inspect appliances like a central air conditioning unit or even dryer vents to make sure they made it through the winter unscathed. Such appliances may have proven an attrac-tive nesting spot for animals over the winter, but damage can be significant if vermin or other animals seek shelter from winter weather inside appliances.

The seasons can be harsh on homes, and perhaps no season is more taxing on a home’s exterior than winter. Harsh winter weather can take a toll on roofs, gutters, landscaping, and just about any other part of the home that must face the cold head-on.

DO confirm you can legally build a fire pit in your yard. Fire pits have become so commonplace that homeowners may think there are no regulations governing their construction. However, it’s still best to confirm with your local government planning or zoning offices if you can build a fire pit and if any restrictions apply.
DON’T proceed with the project until you have been granted official ap-proval. Assuming you have the go-ahead to build a fire pit is not the same thing as knowing you have been approved. Starting early could result in fines if it turns out you aren’t allowed to have a fire pit. But you may also begin building a bigger fire pit than the local government allows, and that could be money down the drain later. Wait until you get official word before you proceed with the project.
DO build on flat ground. The fire pit should be built on flat ground to reduce risk of accident and/or injury. A fire pit built on flat ground also means everyone can enjoy it comfortably and equally once the project is finished. If the ground around the pit is not flat, some people may be forced to sit crooked or lean for-ward just to enjoy the pit.
DON’T build near flammable structures. Build the fire pit far enough away from existing structures, such as your home, garage or shed, so flickering flames do not catch some wind and lead to disaster. Before building in a given spot, monitor the wind patterns for a few days by sitting in a lawn chair at the spot you
ultimately want the fire pit to be. If you notice the wind is blowing toward your house, you will want to choose another area for the pit so smoke from the fire will not be blowing into your home every night.
DO choose the right size. The size of your fire pit will depend on the space you have available, but even if you have a vast swath of space, keep in mind that professional contractors typically recommend building a fire pit no bigger than 44 inches wide. Anything larger can be unsightly and may not appeal to prospec-tive buyers down the road. In addition, an especially large fire pit may result in potentially unruly flames that can present a fire hazard.
DON’T go it alone if your DIY skills are suspect. Installing a fire pit is a relatively inexpensive DIY job, but that does not mean anyone can do it. Ground needs to be excavated and the slope of the yard must be measured so the fire pit is safe and functional for years to come. If your DIY skills are not up to snuff, hire a professional contractor so your backyard oasis does not become a costly head-ache.
A fire pit can turn a boring backyard into a relaxing retreat. But homeowners must adhere to the dos and don’ts of fire pits to ensure their retreat is something they can enjoy for years to come.

These plants can improve
Gerber daisyIndoor airqualityMusty air is not only uncomfortable, it’s also unhealthy. Indoor plants can counter such stale air, in some cases filtering out VOCs to make the air inside a home more breathable and healthy. The following are a handful of houseplants that can improve indoor air quality.
Photos courtesy of Mother Nature Network
Aloe: Many of us know aloe for its restorative properties with regard to treating burns and cuts, but aloe also improves indoor air quality by helping to clear a home of the byproducts, including formaldehyde, of chemical-based household cleaners. Aloe loves the sun, so if you hope to keep an aloe plant healthy through the winter, be sure to place the plant in a window that gets lots of sun exposure throughout the day.
Gerber daisy: Like aloe, a gerber daisy needs ample sunlight, and tends to only withstand winters in warmer climates. But homeowners who live in such climates may still keep their windows closed in winter, and those that do can use these colorful, low-maintenance flowers to remove trichloroethylene, a chemical that clothes may be exposed to during the dry cleaning process.

Ficus benjaminaWarneck dracaena
Golden pothos: The golden pothos can survive a winter, but hom-eowners should be careful not to let the plant dry out, which can happen if they are directly exposed to sunlight. A golden pothos vine will grow quickly, so a hanging basket is a great way to keep one inside a home, where the plant can help fight formaldehyde.
Ficus benjamina: Also known as a weeping fig, the ficus ben-jamina can be difficult to overwinter. But that does not mean your ficus benjamina, which can filter pollutants such as benzene, formaldehyde and trichloroethylene from a home, won’t make it through the winter. You just need to figure out the right watering and light conditions for the plant. Such conditions can be discussed with a gardening professional.
Warneck dracaena: The warneck dracaena, or dracaena dere-mensis, fights pollutants created by varnishes and oils. The warneck dra-caena is a sturdy houseplant that is difficult to kill, but it still thrives in temperatures that are between 70 F and 80 F.

Kitchen renovations have long been a safe way to im-prove the functionality and value of a home. But not every kitchen project is a guaranteed winner. Hom-eowners may inadvertently make changes that end up sticking out like a sore thumb rather than improving the space. Take a look at these kitchen remodeling dos and don’ts to guide your next undertaking.
DO consider the way your kitchen will look with the rest of the home. Keep architectural integrity in mind when designing the space. A farmhouse sink and country cabinets can look out of place in an ultra-modern home.
DON’T overlook the importance of a seasoned designer or architect. These pros will know the tricks to maximizing space and achieving the ideal layout of appliances and may be able to recommend local contractors and vendors.
DO look beyond surface details to the structural integrity of the design. The kitchen should be func-tional, long-lasting and beautiful.
DON’T design just for today, but look to the fu-ture as well. Unless you are willing to spend $50,000 every five years, look for styles and materials that
will last for the long haul. Older homeowners may want to make adjustments now that address potential mobility issues down the road.
DO work with what you have. A complete demoli-tion and renovation is not always necessary to achieve the desired results. Only invest in major changes if something is not working (such as having to walk across the entire kitchen to access the stove) or is un-safe. Otherwise, minor upgrades may do the trick.
DON’T over-improve the space. A fully equipped commercial kitchen may be handy for a professional chef, but the average person may not need an industrial hood and indoor pizza oven. When you make excessive improvements, you may not be able to recoup as much of the money spent because your home will not be on par with the values of homes in the neighborhood.
DO make sure you can afford the project. Plan for some unexpected purchases and plan out the renova-tion according to your budget. Skimping on materials or design because of lack of money may leave you feeling dissatisfied afterward.

Homeowners hoping to expand their homes are faced with a number of choices. One of the first they will have to make is which direction to take their expansion. Homeowners can choose to expand horizontally, increasing the footprint of their homes, or vertically.
Professionals urge prospective remodelers to consider the pros and cons to each expansion option, including which direction to build.
One of the first considerations is land space. Building horizontally will cut into yard space that you may have already earmarked for a pool, shed or another fea-ture. Proximity to neighbors and the dimensions of your property will also help to determine if expanding horizontally is a good idea.
Building codes and neighborhood requirements also must be considered before making any renovations. Some municipalities may have rules in place that govern renovations. Add-ons may not be allowed to exceed certain height limits, nor may structures be built within a certain number of feet of property lines.
Homeowners who choose to build upward will have to contend with work crews and other staff being in their homes. Raising the roof may require vacating the premises at a certain point. Also, extensive renovation work will be needed on the lower level of the home, whether it’s to shore up the structure, clean up after the renovation or repair ceilings, drywall and other components where levels meet.
It may seem easier to expand outward, but this requires laying additional founda-tion for the new building structure. Bringing in digging equipment and masons can be costly. When you build vertically, such foundation work may not be neces-sary if your home is structurally sound and can bear the weight of the addition.
Building out typically involves the least disruption to your life and the existing space. Homeowners should keep in mind that any renovation will require permits or variances. In addition, if the project increases the value of the home, home in-surance costs and property taxes may rise. Only after all considerations have been weighed should a project begin.

Did you know?Feng shui
is the practice of arranging a home or office environment so energy flows gently and
smoothly throughout the building. Many hom-eowners adhere to elements of feng shui, the origins
of which date back several thousand years, in an attempt to create a positive environment that is free of stress. The basis for feng shui is that everything in a given environ-
ment has an energy known as “chi.” Proponents of feng shui believe chi not only flows through the body but also through
the environment. When a home environment negatively affects this flow, believers in feng shui feel this can lead to
health problems, financial troubles or domestic strife. This is why feng shui adherents do not allow clutter to
accumulate in their homes, as they feel clutter can stagnate energy flow. In addition, feng shui ad-herents avoid homes with long, dark hallways
or poorly lit staircases, as they feel such areas negatively affect the flow of
energy in a home.

BrickMany homeowners believe brick driveways provide the most aesthetic appeal, and it’s hard to argue with the beauty of brick driveways and walkways. Brick driveways come in various colors and hues, and many homeowners opt to have the color of their brick driveways match their landscaping, which further adds to curb appeal. But that curb appeal is only appealing if the driveway is designed and installed correctly, and homeowners can expect to pay a premium for that, as brick driveway installation is very labor intensive.
Homeowners have many options at their disposal when choosing a driveway material, and the right material for one home may not be the best fit for another. The following is a rundown of popular driveway surfaces and what homeowners can expect of each of them.

Comfort for your
GravelGravel driveways may not be as commonplace as they once were, but this cost effective driveway material is still an option. Homeowners who live in regions with mild winters without snow might benefit most from gravel driveways, which can be difficult to negotiate when shoveling snow. Gravel tends to be the least expensive driveway material to install, but professionals may recom-mend that a new top layer of gravel be laid once or twice a year to replace material lost to wind and everyday usage.
asphaltAsphalt remains a popular driveway material, thanks in large part to its practicality and ease of installation. Unlike other driveway surface materials, asphalt is available in just one color, black, and that lack of versatility has led many homeowners to consider other options. But asphalt remains an af-fordable driveway surface material that’s relatively easy to repair. Cracks and holes in asphalt are somewhat common, but resealing such blemishes once every three to five years is typically enough to maintain the appearance of an asphalt driveway.
ConcreteConcrete driveways are popular thanks in large part to their affordability and aesthetic appeal. Concrete can be susceptible to extremely cold weather, but many homeowners prefer concrete because of its versatility. Concrete can be stamped or dyed to provide a unique look, which can increase curb appeal. Concrete can be expensive to maintain, particularly when the material cracks. In addition, gas and oil spills are more noticeable on a concrete surface than other driveway surface materials.

Home Gym Building a home gym inside your home can motivate you to workout more often and adopt a healthier lifestyle. Fitness experts advise that homeowners build-ing a home gym in their homes emphasize lighting in the room that will soon transform into a gym. A well-lit room, whether the light is coming from several windows, a door or recessed lighting in the ceiling, can help men and women maintain their energy levels throughout their workouts, whereas darker rooms can lead to feelings of sluggishness, which can compromise workout routines. in addition, when building a home gym, keep the room free of clutter and unneces-sary items that will only be a distractions during workouts. potentially valuable additions to home gyms include plants, which can increase oxygen levels in the room, and at least one mirror, which can help men and women focus on their
movements and ensure they are performing exercises correctly. Homeowners building a home gym also should consider find-ing room for a wall-mounted television to make time spent on elliptical machines or treadmills less monotonous. if possible,
homeowners should connect a streaming device to the televi-sion so they can catch up on their favorite shows or watch
movies as they burn calories. it’s also good to find space for a mini refrigerator in the gym, which should be kept well stocked with water. This can prevent runs to the kitchen in
the middle of a workout.

Did you know?Flooring Homeowners looking for a rustic or
weathered look for their flooring often rely on terracotta tile, a durable and versatile
material that many feel gives a home a warm and earthy feel. Terracotta tile comes in various finishes and has proven resistant to the growth of mold and
bacteria. However, because it is very porous, terracotta tile absorbs moisture quickly, which means it must be sealed somewhat regularly to prevent cracking, discol-
oration and staining. It also must be sealed espe-cially well when installed in a kitchen, as terracotta
floor tiles are susceptible to damage from acids, alcohol, oils, and vinegar. Installation of
terracotta flooring is labor intensive and is therefore best left to pro-
fessionals.

Build wallsAdding drywall to your basement has a big impact on the space immediately. Use 2-by-4s to mark where the walls will stand and place studs 16 inches apart. Then nail the panels to the wall where the edges meet the studs and cover the seams with drywall tape. Once the walls are up, mud the seams and areas where nail pops appear. A drywall saw or power saw will help you shape your drywall per-fectly, but if you don’t own one, you don’t have to buy one. It’s more cost efficient to simply rent it instead for this one-time project. Your local American Rental Association member rental store will have what you need. Don’t forget to add drywall stands to your rental list.
a touch of paintA fresh coat of paint means you won’t have to stare at those drab walls in your new space. You can paint the space by hand, but if you have a large basement and you want to give every room that professional look, rent a paint sprayer instead. The cost is worth the time saved.
Freshen up your floorIf your basement is completely unfinished, you probably have cold, concrete floors. How you improve them is up to you. If you want the polished, marbled

look, consider renting concrete floor finishing equipment for a look that’s sure to amaze. And if the appearance of hardwood is more your style, lami-nate flooring panels are inexpensive and easy to install. Lastly, if you want the feel of carpet beneath your feet, don’t forget to add the pad first to make those future steps a pleasure.
Eliminate the stinkYour new basement is coming together, now what can you do about that musty basement smell? A dehumidifier can help. You can purchase one at your local home goods store and when you get it home, try to place it near the washtub sink if your basement has one. This will allow you to drain right into the sink and save you from having to empty the dehumidifier regularly.
Install a sump pumpNow that you’ve refinished your basement, don’t let water damage ruin all your hard work. A sump pump can protect against flooding issues and installing one is easy. Most new homes have a location marked for a sump pump; it will look like a small well. Follow the water pipes in your home and you can find it. Once you do, purchase a sump pump from your local home goods store and follow the easy instructions to install in less than an hour.

Reduce sun exposure. Much of the hot air inside of a home can be attrib-uted to sunlight exposure throughout the day. Walls and windows on the south and west sides of a home will bear the brunt of the sun’s rays, so close shades and drapes on this side of the house to maximize coolness. Shades and curtains can save you up to 7 percent on your bills and lower indoor temperatures by up to 20 degrees. Homeowners also may want to think about installing a retractable awning on areas of the house that get a lot of sun. Planting shade trees is another way to naturally cool down hot sides of the house.
Draw more air into the attic. Hot air rises, and in the summertime hot air can get trapped beneath the roof in the attic and eaves of a home. While an attic should have vents, homeowners can speed up the exchange of hot air with a simple trick. Open up a window on a shady side of the home, and then open the attic door or take out the access panel and place a box fan inside to blow air up into the attic. This will disperse the hot air and help force it out through the vents.
Use fans productively. Using box fans to suck cool night air in from east- and north-facing windows and to push out hot air from west- and south-facing windows is another way to increase circulation through a home. Running fans may be less costly than turning on air conditioners. Also, set ceiling fans to rotate counter-clockwise. This will pull cooler air up from the floor and create a wind-chill effect.
Switch to LED or CFL bulbs. Ninety percent of the energy used for incandescent bulbs is emitted as heat. This not only wastes electricity but also can make conditions hotter inside a home. Switch to cooler, more efficient light bulbs.
Reduce humidity levels. Humidity makes hot temperatures feel even hotter. Clean laundry, take showers and run the dishwasher at night or early in the morning before the day heats up. Don’t forget to vent bathrooms and kitchens by turning on exhaust fans when water is in use.
Rely on a programmable thermostat. Setting a thermostat to adjust the air conditioning system automatically means homeowners can keep the temperature raised when they’re not home and then have it lowered shortly before they arrive home. The thermostat also can adjust temperatures for day and night use.
Keep doors closed. Do not cool rooms that are unused. Maximize the cool air in lived-in spaces by blocking off rooms that do not need to be cooler.
Invest in more insulation. Insulation does not just keep homes warmer in the cold weather. Insulation also prevents hot air from infiltrating living spaces while keeping cooler air where it’s needed. Sealant around windows and doors also will prevent unnecessary air exchange.

Spare your time, money and sanity by following these steps for choosing the best remodeling contractor:1. Decide what you want out of your newly remodeled home. Start thinking about goals, amenities and a rough timeline, making sure you can clearly articulate your ideas to a contractor. Idea centers, such as Houzz or the James Hardie Photo Showcase, can serve as inspiration for kick-start-ing your remodeling project. This phase is also ideal for researching sustain-able building products. By using green products, homeowners save money on heating and cooling costs, and builders can decrease construction’s carbon footprint.
2. Ask for advice. You’re not the first person to remodel your home, so don’t go through the process alone. Talk to friends, relatives, neighbors and coworkers about their remodeling experiences. In addition to collecting referrals, ask targeted questions about how those contractors communicated throughout the process and mitigated any setbacks. If you know a building inspector, ask which contractors regularly meet code requirements.
3. Research and contact businesses. Start gathering information on your referrals and local prospects by visiting their websites or making phone calls. Make sure these remodeling contractors have the required licenses, li-

ability insurance and ability to obtain local permits for your project. Most will also tell you if they belong to a professional association such as the National Association of the Remodeling Industry or National Association of Home-builders. For exterior remodeling, the James Hardie Building Products website includes a contractor locator tool homeowners can use to search for reputable contractors. The Better Business Bureau also issues warnings about those that might not be trustworthy. Through your research, select three to five potential contractors.
4. Set up meetings with contractors. After identifying your top can-didates, schedule face-to-face meetings with each to discuss your project. Ask questions and make sure communication is fluid and straight-forward. How many projects does the contractor handle at one time? Are his or her past projects similar in scope to yours? More of these questions can be found at the James Hardie Hire a Pro resource center. If you find a particular meeting goes especially well, ask for references and a bid on your project.
5. Compare bids and references. Think of this step as putting the finishing touches on your selection process. When contacting references, ask them to rate their satisfaction with the project. Did the contractor meet time and budget requirements? As soon as the bids come in, look at the cost breakdown of labor and building materials. The best contractor is not always the cheapest. Now’s the time to find out if a contractor uses the best qual-ity products that meet your budget. For instance, does he or she install fiber cement siding on home exteriors, or, opt for the cheaper, less durable vinyl siding? Make sure contractors are choosing long-lasting products that will stand the test of time.
6. Choose your contractor and sign a contract. With all of your research on hand, select the best contractor for your project. After confirm-ing with the contractor, draw up a contract that includes a description of the work, products to be used, cost and completion dates and let the project begin.

After a long winter of snow and ice, many people are ready for the warmth and sunshine synonymous with spring. But dirty windows can block that sunshine from finding its way into a home. Washing windows can be quite an undertaking, par-ticularly in those homes with many windows on multiple levels. How-ever, there are several time-saving tips available that can cut the work considerably.
v Save window washing for a cloudy day. Otherwise, the warmth and sunlight may dry the cleaning solution too quickly and you will be left with streaks on your win-dows.
v Vacuum windowsills and tracks first to remove a good deal of dust and debris. This will reduce the amount of dirt you smear onto the windows while cleaning them.
v Use a combination of a sponge soaked in cleaning solution and a squeegee to get really clean win-dows. The squeegee helps to pre-vent streaks and cut down on the time it takes the windows to dry, all the while helping the windows to sparkle.
v Window screens may be the cul-prit behind dingy windows. Hose down the screens with water to clean them, using a mild cleaning solution if water is ineffective.
v Working with a partner can make the task go much more quickly. One person can clean the exteriors of the windows while the other does the interiors.
v A mild dishwashing liquid di-luted in water can cut through dirt and grime. For stubborn dirt, wash windows with diluted ammonia or vinegar.
v Use a glass-cleaning tool to clean hard-to-reach windows. A telescop-ing cleaning tool and pad can make it safer to reach windows that are high up.

Solid woodWood countertops create a warm, homey interior. Butcher block counters are less expensive than granite and do not necessarily need to be ordered from a speciality retailer. But wood can stain and dent and can even burn when hot kitchenware is placed atop it. Regular application of oil can help homeowners maintain the ap-pearance of their wood counters for years to come.
MarbleMarble tends to be less expensive than granite without sacrificing aesthetic ap-peal. However, marble is softer and more porous than granite, so it can stain and be etched. Diligence in wiping away spills, routine sealing and a gentle touch is necessary for those who choose marble countertops.
SoapstoneThis is a natural stone composed mainly of mineral talc that gives the stone its smooth feel. Soapstone ranges from black to gray but can sometimes have a green shade to it. Other materials in the stone can produce veining. Although softer than granite, soapstone is still high-density and will hold up well. It’s impervious to stains and bacteria, and exposure to chemicals will not damage it.
QuartzQuartz is a manufactured product made of stone aggregate and polymers com-pressed under high pressure. It has the look of natural stone but requires less work to maintain. Quartz has consistent colors and patterns and is a nonporous material, so it will not need routine sealing and resealing.
GlassGlass countertops are back-painted, so homeowners can order just about any color they want. Glass will be tempered, so it is safe and heat-resistant. Glass can scratch, though, so it is not as impervious as other materials.
ConcreteConcrete is another material that can be colored to match homeowners’ whims. Concrete is relatively inexpensive compared to other countertop materials, but it can crack or chip.

The bathroom doesn’t have to be basic. Thanks to a wide array of new products on the market - and plenty of ways to customize - even the most outdated bathrooms can be-come an oasis of tranquility and a lavish retreat away from the stresses of everyday life. Here are six ideas for trans-forming your bathroom into a luxurious spa-like space.
Beautiful bathtubsWhat could be more relaxing than a bubble bath? While some people still enjoy a whirlpool tub, freestanding tubs are growing in popularity, creating a stylish focal point in the master bathroom. Freestanding tub-filler faucets add the perfect finishing touch. Whether your taste is traditional or modern, there is an array of options to accommodate any style preference. To make your bath even more luxurious, some tubs offer a built-in water heater to achieve the perfect consistent temperature.
Wonderful water systemsCustomizable shower systems can help you achieve a spa-like environment. Today’s showerheads offer numerous options to tailor water pressure and flow, whether you prefer a gentle rain-like feel or a more powerful spray. To further enhance the bathing process, body spray systems create a vertical spa experience, providing generous water coverage, and flush mounts give the shower a clean appearance. Be sure to install body sprays with an adjustable spray face to get water exactly where you want it, to create a relaxing sensation of being enveloped by water.
Towels of tranquilityAfter a calming shower or bath, wrapping yourself in a soft, plush towel is a must. For the coziest feel, choose products made with 100 percent Egyptian cotton. This type of cotton has longer, more-fibrous threads, meaning towels are warmer, thicker and more absorbent. Bamboo cloths are also velvety soft. Towels can be used to help customize your space, too. Choose a color or pat-tern that enhances your decor, or add monograms for a personal touch.

Lovely lightingThe right lighting enhances the bathroom’s ambiance, while providing the brightness you need to style hair or apply makeup. Install fixtures and acces-sories from the same product suite to ensure your bath looks as fashionable as it is functional.
Versatile vanitiesOpulence and organization go hand-in-hand with some of today’s newest vanities. Some pieces are equipped with convenient features like integrated night lights and in-drawer electrical outlets, to keep countertops clean and preserve the elegant style of the bathroom. Select a vanity with a granite or marble countertop to make the ultimate luxurious style statement, and com-plete the design by hanging a beautiful mirror atop it. If you have a double sink in your vanity, look for two matching mirrors or, for a touch of drama, install one that’s oversized.
Fabulous fragrancesScents have the power to take our mood from tense to tranquil. Visit your local beauty boutique or high-end department store and treat yourself to a selection of scented candles, soaps and lotions that will help you de-stress and make your bathing routine feel luxe. Lavender, chamomile and cinnamon aro-mas are excellent fragrance selections to create a relaxing atmosphere. Light scented candles while you bathe to enhance your surroundings, or spice up your shower by using scented soaps.
With the right fixtures, lighting and accessories, it’s simple to transform your space from ordinary to opulent. These ideas will inspire you to be living in the lap of luxury right in your own home. Courtesy of Brandpoint

When it comes to remodeling your kitchen you must consider many aspects – cabinets, counters, floors and appliances – but you may not have thought about windows. According to Remodeling.com’s 2015 Cost Vs. Value Report, window replacement – whether wood, vinyl or fiberglass – provides a good return on investment compared to other replace-ment projects, increasing the value of your home financially and aesthetically. So whether you’re making small updates or completely gutting your old kitchen, including window replacement in your project is a smart addition.

For The
StyleKitchen windows are often placed above counters or sinks, making them hard to reach and prone to moisture. Choosing a window style that is easy to open and close, such as an awning, sliding or case-ment, is a smart move.
Awning windows – which can be pulled in or pushed out – are perfect for ventilation, which can be especially helpful in a hot kitchen. Since hot air from the oven or stove typically rises, awning style windows perform the best when placed close to the ceiling or above eye-level.
Sliding or casement windows – which use a crank out method for opening and closing – are two good options for hard to reach areas, like above the counters or behind the kitchen sink. Pella motorized blinds and shades are also ideal for hard to reach window locations and can be controlled with the touch of a button.
Material typeWith window placement above counters or sinks, moisture and staining can occur, so choosing an
easy-to-clean material like vinyl or fiberglass, is equally important. Fiberglass windows can with-stand extreme heat and cold, are energy efficient and can have the same quality look of painted wood. Vinyl windows are easy to care for, don’t require painting or staining, and stay looking great for years.
However, if wood makes more sense for you and the style of your home, then make sure to select a finish that will hold up against stains and mois-ture, and be prepared to do a little more cleaning and up-keep.
Features and optionsWhether your new kitchen is traditional, modern or rustic, your new windows should complement the space. Window designs offer a variety of fea-tures including colors, hardware and grilles. Pella’s Designer Series windows even offer a between-the-glass solution that keeps blinds and shades located behind sinks from getting splashed. With so many options to choose from it’s easy to design a window that’s unique to you and the style of your kitchen.
Here are three key elements to keep in mind when choosing a window for your kitchen:

Glass bottles and jarsEven though glass items are regularly recycled, it’s possible to repurpose glass containers around the house. Empty wine bottles and jars can make lovely candleholders. Pair glass items with a soy candle and cast delicate light on sur-roundings without using any other resources.
Scores of craft projects can be made from jars. Jars with lids can be repurposed into storage containers for home improvement and craft supplies. Such jars also can be used to store other foods.
BooksIn an era of ebooks and digital news, more and more books
are finding their way into landfills. But books can be turned into decorative items. Gluing or attaching books together makes for an
interesting storage shelf that can hold newer books or other items. Stacked and secured books can be transformed into a conversa-tion piece, such as a side or coffee table. Hollow out a niche inside of the pages of a book to use as a treasure chest or to store jewelry you’d like to keep hidden.
JewelryVarious items can be repurposed into jewelry after their initial use. Bracelets can be made from discarded electronic components or recycled paper. Even plastic bread clips can be gathered and strung together for an eclectic looking piece of jewelry.
Old clothesMany people donate their old clothes to the needy, and such gestures help support charitable efforts that benefit the less fortu-nate. But old clothes also can be turned into may different items,
Transform trashInto new and useful items

Americans generate around 4.6 pounds of trash per person, per day. Sixty-five
percent of that trash comes from personal residences, and more than half of that trash ends up buried in landfills.

Turning trash into

even by those people with only minimal sewing skills.
Use cotton, linen or even polyester clothes to create tote bags or wine caddies. Turn discarded clothes into items for doll dress-up. Or, use fabric from clothes to make slipcovers for throw pillows. Small swatches of fabric can be sewn together for change purses or to hold mobile phones.
Plastic bottlesTrimming plastic bottles into different shapes creates possibilities for various storage containers. Turn an empty shampoo bottle into a device charging station that hangs from an outlet, keeping charging cords tidy. Or trim a plastic bottle to form a phone holder that can be attached to a bicycle. Empty milk containers can be turned into in-door terrariums or to start seedlings before spring planting.
PaperPaper is another household item that need not find its way into landfills. Scraps of paper can be bound together to form note pads, and docu-ments can be printed on the back of previously used pieces of paper to fuel conservation efforts.
Shredded paper can be used as filler for mailing packages or as decora-tive confetti inside of gift bags. It also can be used to stuff dolls and toys made from recycled fabric.
So many items are deemed trash and taken for granted. But before toss-ing items into the garbage, consider how they can be upcycled into useful new products.

What is mold?Mold is a blanket term used to describe fungi that can be found both indoors and outdoors. Many species of mold exist, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that some estimates suggest there may be more than three hundred thousand different species of mold. Common indoor molds include cladosporium, penicillium, alternaria, and aspergillus.
Which conditions promote Mold growth?Homeowners may notice that mold tends to grow in specific areas of their homes but not in others, and that’s because molds grow best in certain conditions. Warm, damp and humid conditions, such as those found in poorly ventilated bathrooms and basements, make ideal breeding grounds for mold.
What are the effects of mold exposure?Molds are a natural and resilient part of the environment, but mold growth indoors should be addressed and avoided. Mold spores are tiny and invisible to the naked eye, and when these spores attach to wet surfaces, they begin to grow. Once these spores begin to grow, they can then affect people in various ways. Roughly a decade ago, the Institute of Medicine found sufficient evidence to support a link between exposure to indoor mold and respiratory tract issues, such as coughing and wheezing in people who were otherwise healthy. The same report found that mold may trigger asthma symptoms among people with asthma and hypersen-sitivity pneumonitis, a disease in which the lungs are inflamed when a
person breathes in certain dusts he or she is allergic to, in people susceptible to that condition.
Some people who do not have a preexisting condi-tion can still be sensitive to molds. When exposed to
mold, such people may experience symptoms like nasal stuffiness, eye irritation, wheezing, or skin irritation.
How can exposure to mold Be decreased at home?
Adequate ventilation is arguably homeowners’ best friend with regard to reducing mold exposure at home. Control humidi-
ty levels in areas of the home that tend to be warm and humid, such as the kitchen and bathroom. Install an exhaust fan in the kitchen and bathroom and a window in the bathroom if yours does not already have one.
The CDC recommends that humidity levels be no higher than 50 percent throughout the day, and an air conditioner and dehumidifier can help you keep indoor humidity levels in check, especially during the summer when humidity levels tend to be their highest of any time during the year.
When renovating your home, remove any existing carpeting from bath-rooms and basements and toss out soaked carpets or upholstery as well. If painting will be part of your home renovation projects, add mold inhibi-tors to paints prior to application.
Mold that grows inside a home is unsightly and potentially unhealthy. But concerned homeowners can take several reactive and proactive steps to reduce existing mold growths and prevent them from returning in the future.

But few home renovation projects go from start to finish without experiencing a few bumps in the road along the way. Such bumps can be difficult to handle for homeowners working on their first renovation projects, but there are many ways for novices to navigate the sometimes murky waters of home improvement projects and come out relatively unscathed on the other end, where a newly renovated home awaits.
Plan well and know what to expect. When working with contractors, get all agreements in writing and spell out exactly what you desire in a home renovation. Photo references can help guide contractors and architects. Ask for the full picture of what can be ex-pected with the work, from demolition to the punch list. Knowing what lies ahead can keep you grounded throughout the project.
Discuss work each day & set payment schedules. Make payments contingent on work completed. This can help keep contractors on schedule. Paying for all work upfront leaves homeown-ers at a disadvantage, as it does not provide incentive for workers to be timely and efficient. Check in with workers to get daily progress reports.
Have reasonable expectations. A renovation project may exceed its budget and take longer than initially expected. Understand-ing that these potential setbacks might be part of the process will make it easier to handle them when the foreman speaks to you about any issues that arise.
Accept the mess. Construction work is messy. There’s no way to main-tain a pristine house when contractors are entering and exiting all day. Dust is bound to be generated, and tools can fill up rooms. A home in disarray can be stress-ful, but continue to visualize the end result and the mess won’t bother you so much.
Establish a contingency plan. Bathrooms and kitchen renovations are typically the most disruptive home improvement projects. Going without a kitchen can make it difficult to enjoy meals at home, while a bathroom remodel may require you to navigate water shutoffs. If your project is scheduled to take several months, establish a contingency plan to deal with the consequences of your renovation project. Speak with family members about using some of their home amenities, and prepare and freeze meals in advance so you can reheat them later on when you don’t have access to your stove.
Plan your escape. Sometimes the constant work and mess of construction is too much to bear. Afford yourself time away by visiting relatives or staying at a hotel. Even a single night away can provide the relief you need.

Set aside several days for spring cleaning. A long weekend is a great time to do some spring cleaning, as having consecutive days to clean will reduce the chances you grow distracted.
Make a list and purchase all of the supplies you will need. Again, this will help you stay on course, rather than going out to the store to pick up cleaners or organizational systems.
Try to set reasonable goals. Even if you hope to clean the entire house, stick to the one or two rooms that are most desperate for your attention. Divide each task into a series of steps so when you complete each step you will feel proud that you’re making progress.
Create your musical playlist. A playlist full of your favorite songs can provide some inspiration and energy to push you through the spring cleaning when your enthusiasm starts to wane. The music also may take your mind off of the work ahead and help to pass the time.
Start from the top and work downward. Follow a logical cleaning order. Begin by dusting away cobwebs and lighting fixtures. Clean light switches and walls. Empty closets and then restock them in a more organized fashion. Leave the furniture and flooring for last, as dirt and dust may accumulate on furniture and flooring as you clean other areas of the home.
Be prepared to bid adieu to some of your stuff. Have a few trash bags at the ready. Reorganize items you won’t be keeping into separate piles, with one pile for items you plan to donate and another for those items you will discard. Donate what you can and promptly put the remainder of the items at the curb for pickup.
Stay fed and hydrated. Cleaning can be physically and emo-tionally exhausting. Take breaks to fuel up on food and always have a refreshing beverage close by.

Garages are often targets for homeowners hoping to target clut-ter. Once a space reserved for cars, garages are no longer strictly for vehicles, used instead to store items that simply do not fit inside the home or a backyard shed. Organizing the garage is typically a weekend or several-day project. Enlist a helper. Or-ganizing a garage is a significant undertaking that is best tackled with two or more people. Enlist a helper to make the project less intimidating.
Decide what is important to keep. Start the organization process by clearing out the garage and taking inventory of what you have. Items that have not been used for several years can likely be tossed. Make a pile of what will be kept and then put the rest at the curb or donate useful items to charity.
Give thought to where you want to store particular items. Tools and items that are used more often should be stored within reach or where easily visible, while items that are not used as frequently can be stored higher up. Think about how you operate in the garage. Recycling bins can be stored closer to the door into the
home, while bicycles and skates can be nearer to the garage door for easy access.
Group like items together. Categorize items that will be kept. Garden tools, camping gear, sporting equipment, and automotive supplies should be categorized and stored in their own areas of the garage, determining if certain items can be stored inside the home to free up garage space. Grouping items together will make them easier to locate in the garage.
Move boxed items into clear storage containers. It’s much easier to see what you have when it is stored in clear containers. Some containers are interlocking or stackable, making it much more convenient to store items vertically and free up more floor space.
Invest in vertical storage systems. Moving items from the floor and putting them on shelving or behind cabinets can make the garage more organized. Hooks and bins also can be used. Employ a peg board full of hooks for oft-used tools or other items you need at the ready.
Leave space for hobby and work areas. Garages are where many improvement projects begin or where hobbies, such as wood-working or crafting, take place. Leave space for these tasks and hobbies.
Give the space a fresh coat of paint. Some garages are dingy and dark. Bright paint on the walls and floor can open up the space and, when combined with more lighting, can make it lighter and brighter.
Garage organization is a common spring cleaning project. But it shouldn’t be reserved for this season alone. Periodic checks of the garage and straightening up can keep a garage clean and orga-nized throughout the entire year and make yearly spring cleaning much more manageable.
