Last season was a tumultuous one for the Vulcans under head coach Mike Kellar. Cal U was on a six-game winning streak and in control of the PSAC West standings before finishing with an 8-2 overall record and tied for third in the divisional standings. The Vulcans look to build on last year’s success and learn from adversity with a youthful, yet experienced, squad that could feature only six seniors in the starting lineup. Senior James Harris returns to direct one of the league’s most prolific offenses. In his first full season as the starter, he emerged as one of the top quarterbacks in the region by passing for over 3,000 yards and nearly 25 touchdowns. Harris also protected the ball well, throwing just seven interceptions on 300-plus attempts, while displaying the ability to throw deep downfield. He ranked among the top 10 in the country in yards per completion and yards per attempt. A heralded two-sport standout in Georgia, he made almost 70 starts for the Wake Forest baseball team before transferring to Cal U. Sophomore Mike Keir again serves as the backup at quarterback after handling the snaps with the first team in spring practice. He played sparingly as a reserve in two games last season. The Vulcans will feature an unproven group in the backfield following a spring injury to junior Nick Grissom. The Cincinnati native led the team with nearly 700 rushing yards last season and Cal U was already going to have to replace nearly 800 yards and almost 20 rushing touchdowns by Terrell Roberson and Derrick Fiore, who is converting back to defense this season. After the injury and position change, Cal U enters training camp with just a combined 11 carries returning from last season. Sophomore John Franklin III enters as the projected starter and is a downhill-type runner with good speed for his 220-pound frame. Classmate Jordan McCrae, along with redshirt sophomore Nate Goldsmith, will battle for carries throughout training

camp. The position could receive additional depth with the addition of former West Mifflin standout Jimmy Wheeler, who rushed for over 2,600 yards as a senior. Cal U returns virtually all of its wide receivers, headlined by the emerging duo of senior Kowan Scott and junior Garry Brown. In his first year as a starter, Brown led the league in receiving yards and became the first sophomore in program history to surpass 1,000 yards. Scott totaled nearly 900 receiving yards and led the team with 10 touchdowns after totaling just one score in 2013. Sophomores Luke Smorey and Tom Greene provide tremendous depth in the slot and displayed big-play ability last season. The Vulcans also return a pair of veteran tight ends in Paul Butler and Desimon Green and h-back Ryan McCauley. Green tallied over a dozen receptions in the initial two weeks last year before injuries limited his role in the passing game. Butler continues to provide versatility to the offense, while also being a legitimate red-zone threat with his 6-foot-6, 260-pound frame. McCauley has played in nearly 20 games over the last two years and is coming off an impressive spring. Cal U utilized just six players in the starting lineup last season on the offensive line, but will have to replace starters at both center and left tackle. Junior Tyler Peerson has started all 21 games over the last two seasons at right tackle, while senior Jeremy Seaman has made 19 starts during that span at right guard. After playing three games as a true freshman in 2013, Zach Morehead started all 10 games at left guard last year. Senior Grant Jones figures to start at one of the openings on the offensive line after playing in a combined 22 games the last two years while at Liberty. Senior Eddie Martin and Taylor Nikithser both provide versatility to the offensive line by being able to play multiple positions. Martin played in nine games, primarily at center, over the last two season, while Nikithser made a pair of starts at right guard last season. Redshirt freshmen Jacob Horshaw and Austin Jacobs, along with sophomore Marquis Norris, provide valuable depth to the offensive line. The Vulcans return virtually their entire defensive

special teams last year. Page has seen significant action in each of the past two seasons, starting the last two games of 2014. The Vulcans return perhaps the most experience on the team at safety. Junior Jordan Bowman returns at free safety after earning All-PSAC West First-Team honors in his first year as a starter. Classmate Arnel Farmer, Jr. is the team’s top returning tackler after posting nearly 75 stops, while senior Chaz Veal posted almost 50 tackles and made three interceptions while starting only four games. In addition, senior Derrick Fiore bolsters the depth of the secondary after rushing for over a combined 550 yards the last two seasons. He started his career on defense and posted nearly 20 stops as a redshirt freshman in 2012. On special teams, coordinator Larry Wilson will be working with first-year specialists at both kicker and punter, as sophomore Ian Patterson and redshirt freshman Dominick Delgreco have never played a college snap. The Vulcans also have added kicker transfer William Brazill, who made a long of 53 yards last season at junior college. Cal U will also be featuring a new return specialist on kickoffs this year with the position to be decided in training camp. On punt returns, junior Aaron Terry ranked second in the PSAC in yards per return while handling the duties for the first time in his career. The special teams unit combined to block seven kicks last season. The coverage unit of special teams lost its top two tacklers from last year. Junior Alex Beasley leads the returning players with nine tackles on special teams, while sophomore Devonte Suber collected eight stops. Sophomore Mitch Fillmore will again be handling the long-snapping duties, while senior James Harris will serve as the holder.

front and secondary from last year. However, to help maximize personnel and in an effort to lessen the loss of all three starting linebackers, coordinator Mike Lopez will be transitioning Cal U to a 4-2-5 scheme in 2015. Junior Jawan Turner anchors the defensive line after leading the team and ranking among the PSAC leaders in TFL and sacks in his first year as a starter. He earned All-PSAC West First-Team laurels while splitting time in the interior and on the outside. Turner looks to open training camp at defensive tackle, along with returning starters Tyler Haddock and Adam Mihoci. The pair combined for nearly 50 stops in over a dozen starts as freshmen and Haddock recorded 7.0 TFL. In addition, fellow sophomore Daemond Pierce provides valuable size to the interior with his 6-foot-5 frame. Sophomore Anthony Campbell and junior Alex Beasley, a former linebacker, provide additional experienced depth to the defensive tackle rotation. On the outside, junior Jordan Lardani and senior Errol Brewster both look to have a significant impact. Lardani opened last year as the starter after playing offense as a freshman and is coming off an impressive spring. Brewster started 15 games at IUP from 2010-12 and set a career high with 10.0 TFL as a sophomore. The Vulcans have experienced depth on the outside with the return of sophomores Corey Bopp and Acantay Patton, along with a pair of redshirts. The Vulcans look to replace over 200 tackles from last season and 50-plus career starts at linebacker this fall. Sophomore Luke Hrapchak and redshirt freshman Brendan Blair open training camp as the projected starters, while several talented and inexperienced players will challenge for snaps. Hrapchak played in every game as a true freshman and is coming off an impressive set of spring practices. A former defensive back, Blair adjusted quickly to the change and brings impressive athleticism to the position. Sophomore Devonte Suber looks for extended time on defense after being one of the team’s top players on special teams. The position looks to be bolstered by the addition of Ohio State transfer Chad Hagan, who attended nearby Canon-McMillan. On the perimeter, junior Aaron Terry headlines the cornerbacks after starting 12 games over the past two seasons. He earned All-PSAC West honors as a true freshman before missing time due to injury last year. Fellow juniors Vondell Bell and Josh Page will battle for the starting role on the opposite side. A former wide receiver, Bell appeared in seven games primarily on

Mike Kellar enters his fourth season as head coach in 2015, and 10th overall as a member of the coaching staff at Cal U. He previously served as the team’s offensive coordinator for five years before serving as the offensive coordinator/associate head coach for offense in 2011. In three years as head coach, Kellar has led the Vulcans to a 23-9 record while playing eight nationally-ranked teams. Cal U has featured six All-Americans in that span, including offensive lineman Eric Kush, who became the second Cal U player in recent years to be selected in the NFL Draft. In addition, defensive lineman B.J. Stevens led NCAA Division II in sacks per game in 2013 and defensive back Rontez Miles repeated as the PSAC West Defensive Player of the Year and was invited to the NFL Combine. While away from the program in 2009-10, Kellar guided Concord (W.Va.) to a 14-8 record as head coach. Prior to his arrival, the Mountain Lions managed only one win in the previous two years and hadn’t posted a winning season since 1998. In 2010, Kellar led Concord to an 8-3 overall record to mark the first eight-win season for the program since it joined NCAA Division II in 1993. Under his guidance, the Mountain Lions featured one of the most balanced offenses in the WVIAC in 2010, ranking second in passing and total offense. Concord also ranked fourth in the country by averaging almost 500 yards of offense per game. While with the Mountain Lions, Kellar mentored one of the most explosive wide receivers in the country in Thomas Mayo. A two-time All-WVIAC selection, Mayo set a school record and led the country in receiving yards per game in 2009. That season, he became the school’s first-ever Harlon Hill regional finalist and was Concord’s first All-American since 2002. In his return to the Vulcans in 2011, Kellar worked with the most prolific passing offense in school history. Quarterback Peter Lalich broke the single-season school records for attempts, completions and passing yards, averaging nearly 300 yards per game. Mayo joined Kellar at Cal U and garnered All-America honors. Kellar has developed some of the most potent offenses in school history. In 2004 and 2005, he coached the PSAC West Offensive Player of the Year in running back Antoine Bagwell. In 2005, the Vulcans averaged over 460 yards of total offense and scored over 40 points per game. After Cal U led the PSAC in total offense and rushing offense in 2006, Kellar directed a record-setting offense during the historic 2007 season. The Vulcans rushed for nearly 2,900 yards and totaled over 5,000 yards of offense for the first time in school history. The following year, Cal U won its first PSAC

Championship since 1984 and shattered the single-season school record with over 6,000 yards of total offense. Under the tutelage of Kellar, quarterback Kevin McCabe was a Harlon Hill regional finalist and became the first quarterback in school history to surpass 3,000 passing yards and 30 touchdowns. In all but one of Kellar’s nine years with the program, the Vulcans have averaged over 30 points per game. His Cal U offenses have helped seven players earn All-America status. A native of West Virginia, Kellar was the starting quarterback at Glenville State for head coach Rich Rodriguez before transferring to Fairmont State. He earned his undergraduate degree in liberal arts in 1996 from FSU before receiving his master’s degree from West Virginia in safety management. Kellar started his coaching career at his alma mater, Fairmont State. During his eight years as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, the Falcons won a pair of WVIAC championships. He then accepted the offensive coordinator position at Northern Michigan in 2002. During that season, the Wildcats set school records for passing attempts, completions and yards before finishing second in the conference in 2003 in both total offense and passing yards. Kellar and his wife Melissa have four children, Diedra, Jarrod, Anthony and Jacob.

After spending 11 years as a coach at Fairmont State, including six as the head coach, Mike Lopez enters his third season as the defensive coordinator at Cal U. Lopez made an immediate impact on the defense in 2013, as the Vulcans finished the year ranked in the top 10 nationally in both pass efficiency defense and scoring defense. Defensive back Dewey McDonald, who played for Lopez at Fairmont State, received All-America honors and signed with the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent. McDonald played in 12 games as a rookie last season. Lopez led the Fighting Falcons to a 30-35 overall record after becoming the head coach in 2007. A former player at Fairmont State, he also served as defensive coordinator from 2002-11.

In 2011, Lopez led Fairmont State to its most wins in over a decade. The Fighting Falcons featured 10 players, including five on defense, on the All-WVIAC teams and boasted the WVIAC Offensive Freshman of the Year. Fairmont State finished the year ranked sixth in the country in rushing defense and were among the country’s best with 34 sacks. Lopez was a standout defensive end and team captain for Fairmont State from 1996-97. As a junior, he helped the Fighting Falcons win the conference title for the first time in nearly a decade. Lopez transferred to Fairmont State after playing two years at Potomac State. He earned a degree from Fairmont State in 1998 before completing his master’s degree from West Virginia.

Dave Cole begins his 12th season as a member of the coaching staff at Cal U, serving as the secondary coach and recruiting coordinator. While with the Vulcans, Cole has mentored a pair of All-Americans in Terrence Johnson and Rontez Miles. Johnson played two seasons in the NFL, starting two games in 2011 with the Indianapolis Colts. Miles attended the NFL Combine in 2013 and signed with the New York Jets as a free agent. Cole also coached Tommie Campbell, who was selected in the 2011 NFL Draft by the Tennessee Titans. He has played almost 40 games in his career while becoming a special teams standout. Cal U has led the PSAC in interceptions in five of the last nine seasons. In 2011, the Vulcans tied for second in the league with

20 interceptions by 12 different players. In 2007, the Vulcans were the top-ranked defense in the nation and led the PSAC with 18 interceptions. In 2013, Cole participated in the NFL Fellowship Program during training camp with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Cole is a former four-year player and two-year starter for the Vulcans. He earned his bachelor’s degree in 2004 before finishing his master’s degree in geography and regional planning at Cal in 2006. A native of Cincinnati, Cole was a first-team league all-star and earned all-city honors as a defensive back at Winton Woods High School. Cole and his wife Sharron have two daughters, Saniya and Rebecca.

A veteran of the Arena Football League (AFL), Chad Salisbury begins his seventh season as quarterbacks coach with Cal U. During his time with the Vulcans, he has coached three All-PSAC West quarterbacks. Josh Portis finished his career as the school’s all-time leader in touchdown passes and Peter Lalich finished fourth all-time in school history in passing yards and touchdowns. Salisbury played with five teams during his AFL career before finishing his career after the 2007 season with the Grand Rapids Rampage. In his final two seasons in the AFL, he threw for over a combined 5,000 yards and 100 touchdowns. Prior to his successful professional career, Salisbury was a two-year letterman at Buffalo after transferring from New Mexico State. In his first season with the

Bulls, he established then-school records for completions, attempts, passing yards and total offense. Salisbury finished his two-year career at Buffalo with over 4,900 passing yards and 31 touchdowns. He started his coaching career at his high school alma mater Frazier High School, serving as an assistant for current Cal U wide receivers coach/special teams coordinator Larry Wilson. Salisbury resumed coaching in the off-season of his professional career at Byron Center High School in Michigan. Salisbury was hired as the quarterbacks/wide receivers coach for the Los Angeles Avengers before the AFL cancelled the 2009 season. Salisbury earned his degree in communication from Buffalo and completed his master’s degree in sport management from Cal U.

Larry Wilson enters his 11th year at Cal U as the wide receivers coach and special teams coordinator. Over the last seven seasons, Wilson has mentored four All-American and six 1,000-yard wide receivers. In 2008, All-American Marcel Pestano became the first player in 25 years to eclipse the mark before A.J. Jackson and Terrance Moore both accomplished the same feat the following year. Jackson set the single-season school records for receptions, yards and touchdowns as a senior. In 2011, Thomas Mayo ranked third in the country in receiving yards per game. Wilson has coached at least one All-PSAC West First-Team wide receiver in each of the last 10 years. Wilson has also developed some of the top specialists in the PSAC. In 2007, kicker Tyler Lorenz was named an All-American

after setting the school record for single-season field goals. Wilson coached All-PSAC West kicker Marc Domonkos and punter Derek Fiorenza in 2010. Last season, Andrew Cerett earned All-America honors after ranking among the national leaders in punting and Cody Nuzzo finished his career as the school’s all-time leader in virtually every kicking category. Prior to his time with the Vulcans, Wilson served as the head coach at Frazier High School, where he was an all-state wide receiver before playing three seasons at Slippery Rock. He graduated from Slippery Rock with a bachelor’s degree in sports management. Wilson and his Kristin live in North Huntingdon, Pa., with their sons, Cooper and Camden.

2015 FOOTBALL MEDIA GUIDE @CALVULCANS

NATIONAL RECOGNITION: For the 11th-consecutive season, Cal U featured at least player being recognized as an All-American. Punter Andrew Cerett was named an All-American by both D2Football.com and Don Hansen after he ranked fifth in the country with 44.0 yards per punt. The trio of junior wide receiver Garry Brown, offensive lineman Jack Abercrombie and kicker Cody Nuzzo each earned All-America status from Don Hansen. PASSPORTS READY: Linebackers Jeff Knox, Jr. and Spencer Lynn both have continued their playing careers internationally. Knox was signed by the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the CFL, while Lynn traveled to Germany to play with the Osnabruck Tigers.

VULCANS IN THE PROS: A total of five former Vulcans entered training camp with NFL teams

in the summer of 2015. Among all schools in Pennsylvania, regardless of division, only Penn State, Pitt and Temple have more former players on NFL rosters. The rest of the PSAC (15 schools) has a combined nine former players in the NFL, while all the FCS schools in Pennsylvania have a combined eight players.

BROWN DELIVERS: Junior wide receiver Garry Brown burst on the national scene last season by becoming just one of four sophomores in NCAA Division II to eclipse 1,000 receiving yards. He posted five games with least 100 receiving yards after making just five catches as a true freshman in 2013. Brown recorded the third-most single-game receiving yards in all NCAA divisions, and tops in NCAA Division II, with 282 yards, which shattered the previous school record that stood for over 45 years. MAN IN THE MIDDLE: Offensive lineman Jack Abercrombie was the 2014 NCAA Division II recipient of the Rimington Award, which recognizes the most outstanding center. He made 34 starts during his career, including the last 20 at center, and received All-PSAC West First-Team status in each of the last two years. Abercrombie earned academic all-district honors and was a team captain during both his junior and senior seasons.

TAKING FLIGHT: The Vulcans eclipsed 3,000 passing yards last season for the fourth time in the last seven years. Cal U improved their passing offense from 2013 by nearly 70 yards per game and set the single-season school record with 305.5 passing yards per game. Last year, the Vulcans also averaged almost 10 more points per game than in 2013, posting their highest scoring average in nearly a decade.

SWITCHING SIDES: Linebacker Jeff Knox, Jr. finished second on the team with 11.5 TFL and 7.5 sacks after entering the year with nearly 1,000 rushing yards and 25 touchdowns in his career. Playing exclusively on defense for the first time, he totaled 59 tackles and was tabbed an All-PSAC West Second-Team selection. Knox recorded a ‘strip-sack’ in three-straight games in the middle of the season and finished the year ranked seventh in the country in forced fumbles per game.

CLIMBING BACK: After not being featured in the AFCA Top 25 poll at any point during the 2013 season, the Vulcans cracked the rankings once last year. Cal U was receiving votes the initial eight weeks of the poll before debuting at No. 25 in the Oct. 27 edition after extending their winning streak to six games.

BUSY LEG: Kicker Cody Nuzzo finished his career as the program’s all-time leader in nearly every statistical kicking category. He set a career high with 87 points last season behind 14 field goals, including a school record 50-yard attempt at the end of regulation against Bloomsburg. Nuzzo closed his career ranked second in school history with 294 points, totaling at least 65 points in each of his four years as the kicker.

DIVVY UP THE WORK: The tandem of Terrell Roberson and junior Nick Grissom combined for 1,300 rushing yards and over 20 touchdowns despite neither player totaling more than 150 carries. Roberson, a former defensive back, ranked among the national leaders with 17 rushing touchdowns, while Grissom rushed for almost 700 yards. It marked the first time since 2009

CALIFORNIA (Oct. 18) – Behind an interception in the end zone with less than one minute remaining, the Vulcans claimed sole possession of first place in the PSAC West standings with a 21-13 victory over IUP in the sixth-annual Coal Bowl at Adamson Stadium. Cal U forced five turnovers and limited the Crimson Hawks to 111 rushing yards, which was over 70 yards less than their season average. The Vulcans also registered six sacks, including 3.0 sacks by defensive lineman Jawan Turner. Defensive back Jordan Bowman was named the Coal Bowl MVP after registering two takeaways and six tackles. The long-standing rivalry between Cal U and IUP has taken new meaning in recent years, as the series became known as the Coal Bowl in 2009. The background of the Coal Bowl is credited to the Lippencott brothers, Bob (Cal U Class of 1966) and Barry (IUP Class of 1967), who have established football scholarships at their alma maters. As part of their initiatives, the families donated a ‘Coal Pail’ trophy that is presented to the winner of the rivalry between the two institutions. Originally from nearby Brownsville, Pennsylvania, the Lippencott family has a long history of working in the coal industry and felt the game would be an excellent platform to honor their families, respective universities and the coal industry.

The rivalry between Cal U and IUP dates back nearly 100 years and is one of the premier games in the PSAC and NCAA Division II in recent years. From 2000-12, either the Vulcans or Crimson Hawks won or shared the PSAC West title and combined for 10 NCAA post-season appearances in that time.
