Letter from the Chairman of the BoardI’m passionate that access to high quality early education should be available to every child in our Greater Houston region. Our youngest citizens must receive the care and education they need NOW to ensure they start kindergarten prepared to succeed in school and in life.

It was my honor to serve as chairman of the Collaborative for Children Board of Directors in 2015, an exciting year of progress in which the organization summarized multiyear data to document proven methods while drafting a bold path forward to reach even more children.

Recognizing the importance of parents as a child’s first teachers, we expanded our work in offering the home visitation Parents as Teachers

curriculum to more families in 2015. The role of parents in a child’s development cannot be overstated, and Collaborative for Children’s many family engagement programs serve to build skills and knowledge among parents of young children.

2015 also was an important year for the College Bound from Birth program, which saw the program’s first forays into both sustainability and replication. Initial participating child care programs in the Sunnyside / South Park neighborhood – which began their journey in College Bound from Birth in 2008 – maintained and increased their classroom scores through their first year of sustainability with minimal hands-on support from the Collaborative for Children team. Meanwhile, the program began its replication into new neighborhoods with the launch of a three-year intervention at four child care centers in Aldine.

Test scores from former College Bound from Birth children who were enrolled in first and second grade last year in Sunnyside-area HISD schools also told a promising story: on a variety of measures, students who previously were enrolled in College Bound from Birth centers consistently outperformed their peers in neighborhood schools. With this and other data validating our program, Collaborative for Children was well positioned to develop an aggressive plan for growing College Bound from Birth throughout Houston.

Replicating College Bound from Birth is just one of several initiatives identified in the five-year strategic plan adopted by our Board of Directors in 2015. Recognizing the successes from our past as well as needs for the future, board and staff developed a comprehensive plan of thoughtful and strategic initiatives to move the organization forward to the year 2020. I’m incredibly proud of the plan and the value it brings in communicating to our partners, donors and stakeholders not just our vision for the next five years but also the coordinated efforts we’ll take to get there.

On behalf of the Collaborative for Children Board of Directors and staff, I extend my sincere appreciation to our dedicated donors for their support in 2015. As we look toward the future and begin implementation of our new strategic plan, we ask for continued community support to achieve our ambitious goals. Together, we can make quality early childhood learning for all Houston children a reality.
