A BAKER’S DOZENWith their 27-14 record, the Lions are 13 games over the .500 mark for the first time in program history. For all of its success, Columbia has received votes in the NCBWA National Poll three times on the season.

HOW DO YOU SPELL RELIEF?On the year, Columbia has 13 saves which has set a new single-season team record. First-year Harrisen Egly has picked up five, which is tied for an individual season record. Junior Matt Robinson has three, Ty Wiest has two and Ryan Marks and first-year Brett Gannaway each have one, respectively.

ROAD WARRIORSColumbia’s 16-12 road record is the third best in the nation, according to college baseball writer Eric Sorenson. Dallas Baptist holds a 19-7 mark away from home and Central Michigan boasts an 18-12 record on the road.

HOME SWEET HOMEAt home the Lions have also been formidable, posting a 10-2 record. Over the past three season, Columbia is 35-7 at Robertson Field at Satow Stadium.

PALLER POWERAfter missing the bulk of Columbia’s spring break trip due to a hand injury, junior tri-captain Robb Paller has hit safely in all 26 games since he returned to action against Army on March 25. He also had a 15-game hit streak from March 25-April 25, the longest for a Lion this season. Against Fordham on April 22, Paller had a career-day, going 4-for-6 with seven RBI, the most in a game since Dario Pizzano had six at Harvard in 2010.

BASH BROTHERSJoey Falcone and Gus Craig became the first set of teammates to share Ivy League Player of the Week honors after the duo combined for 20 RBI in five games last weekend, including a four-game sweep of Cornell.

GRAND SLAMSAfter recording just one grand slam in four years, the Lions hit a homer with the bases full in back-to-back games. Joey Falcone hit one late in the game against Cornell on April 19 and Randell Kanemaru kept the streak going against Fordham on April 22.

‘ATTA BOY, ROYJunior Kevin Roy pitched his second consecutive complete-game shutout in a 4-0 win over Princeton in game one of a doubleheader on April 12. He allowed just three hits and struck out seven to improve to 3-2 on the year. In an 8-0 win in game one over Brown on April 6, the Houston product tossed another three-hitter. He had a scoreless inning streak of 17.1 innings, dating back to his March 20 start at USC Upstate until the second inning of his start against Cornell on April 19.

UNLEASH THE SAVAGESophomore Will Savage exploded to hit .529 with a double, home run and five RBI in four games at Princeton to earn Ivy League Player of the Week honors on April 14. Savage hit safely in each game and finished the series with the Tigers with a 3-for-6, five-RBI performance.

OFFENSIVE EXPLOSIONColumbia outscored Yale and Brown on April 5-6 by a combined score of 44-8. The 16 runs in game one at Yale was the most runs for the Lions in a game since they scored 17 at South Alabama in 2011.

CRAIG HEATING UPSenior outfielder Gus Craig has heated up since the team returned north, hitting .427 with an .831 slugging percentage in 24 games. Craig, who was named Ivy League Player of the Week on March 31, recorded his 100th career hit against Cornell on April 18.

COOK-IE MONSTERSenior third baseman David Vandercook is also coming on both with the bat and the glove. As the fourth member of Columbia’s “murderer’s row” of lefties in the heart of the lineup, Vandercook is hitting .388 with eight doubles, 15 runs and 23 RBI in Ivy League play. At the hot corner, he has been one of the team’s top defenders, committing errors in just three contests this season.

DIRTY HARRYAlso honored on March 31, was first-year pitcher Harrisen Egly who was tabbed Rookie of the Week. The 6-4 righty factored in to three decisions with two saves and a victory in four shutout innings of relief. He tied the program record for saves in a single-season and is second in the Ivy League with five saves.

SERENA-TY NOWSenior Jordan Serena has arguably been Columbia’s most consistent player this season. He has reached safely in all but five games and has been held without a hit just seven times this season. Serena stole his 71st career base at Princeton to take over possession of second on the all-time list. He is 14 shy of the all-time record held by Garrett Neubart. The Parker, Colorado, native also cracked into the top-10 in runs scored (128) and hits (179).

BORETTI REACHES COLUMBIA MILESTONEBrett Boretti picked up his 200th victory as head coach of Columbia with a game one win at Brown on April 6. Last season, the skipper who is in his 10th year, won his 300th career game.

SUPER SUBSDespite losing two regular starters on the beginning of its spring break trip, Columbia did not missed a beat due to the superb play of junior John Kinne and sophomore Shane Adams. Kinne is hitting .313 on the year to go with a pair of doubles and 10 RBI in 29 games. Kinne has a pinch-hit, walk-off RBI hit and a ninth-inning game-tying knock under his belt this season. Adams has been a menace on the base paths, scoring 14 runs and stealing eight bases. Adams boasts a batting average of .317 and OBP of .420 on the year.

MR. ROBINSON’S NEIGHBORHOODJunior Matt Robinson has emerged as a key contributor out of the bullpen after a strong week in the Carolina’s. Robinson factored in on four of the five victories over spring break with a win and three saves. The Orlando, Florida, native saved both games of a doubleheader at USC Upstate on March 20, stranding inherited runners in each appearance. His three saves already put him two shy of tying the program’s single-season record.

FALCONE RISINGSenior Joey Falcone has returned to form this season, boasting a team-best .350 batting average to go with four homers and 26 RBI. To start the season, Falcone went 7-for-14 with two homers, four doubles and seven RBI to go with a 1.214 slugging percentage in four games at No. 6 Houston. For his efforts, he was tabbed as Ivy League Player of the Week and one of CollegeBaseball360.com’s Primetime Performers.

LIONS IN HOME OPENERSColumbia improved to 6-4 in home openers in the Brett Boretti era after its 13-10 win over Army on March 25. The Lions have won three-straight home debuts.

MARCH TO 3,000Columbia played the 3,000th game in program history on March 16 at UNC Wilmington. The Lions are in their 127th season of playing collegiate baseball.

UPSET ALERTThe Lions two victories over No. 6 Houston in the opening weekend of the season were the first two wins over a top-10 opponent in program history. Columbia does have a recent history of knocking off ranked foes, earning a victory at No. 16 Arizona during the 2013 campaign.

RANDELL’S ISLANDFirst-year Randell Kanemaru also made a strong first impression, reaching base safely in all four games at No. 6 Houston and coming up with timely hits during the series. His RBI single in the 13th inning of game two of the set plated the go-ahead run in a Lions win. For his efforts, Kanemaru was tabbed Ivy League Rookie of the Week on March 3.

10-OUT SAVERyan Marks picked up a rare 10-out save in Columbia’s 12-7 victory over No. 6 Houston on March 1. Marks tossed 3.1 scoreless innings to go with three strikeouts for his second career save.

OH CAPTAINS, MY CAPTAINSSeniors Jordan Serena and Mike Weisman, along with junior Robb Paller were selected as Columbia’s tri-captains by the team this past fall.

PROUDLY SERVINGJoey Falcone, a former Marine medic, served three tours of duty overseas before returning to the baseball field. Falcone, the son of former Major Leaguer Pete Falcone, spent one year at Staten Island before transfering to Columbia as a General Studies student prior to 2013. Falcone was a semifinalist for the Gregg Olson Award, which honors college baseball’s breakout player of the year as a sophomore.

Columbia took an early advantage in the Ivy League Championship Series riding another strong pitching effort from David Speer to a 6-2 victory over Dartmouth. Speer went eight frames, posting seven strikeouts, one walk, while allowing two runs. Mike Concato suffered the loss for Dartmouth, giving up seven hits and four runs in four innings of work.

The heart of the lineup generated the majority of the offense for the Lions, as David Vandercook and Robb Paller each recorded two hits, including a home run, two RBI and scored once. Nick Maguire and John Kinne drove in the other two runs for Columbia.

Dartmouth was able to get on the board in the opening frame, using doubles from Nick Ruppert and Dustin Selzer to take a 1-0 lead. Speer settled in from that point, retiring 10 straight after the run scored with five strikeouts.

Columbia quickly got the run back in the bottom half of the first inning. Will Savage raced up the first base line to earn an infield single and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Vandercook then laced a double down the right field line to bring in Savage, evening the game at 1-1.

The fourth inning saw the Lions grab control with a trio of runs. The inning started with a bang as Paller jacked the first pitch he saw over the right field wall. Shortstop Aaron Silbar followed with a double over the centerfielder’s head. Gus Craig reached on an infield single and both Columbia base runners moved up on a balk called on Concato. Maguire recorded his RBI on a sacrifice fly to centerfield, making it a 3-1. Kinne closed out the scoring in the inning for Columbia, knocking a hard single out to center, plating Craig.

Dartmouth got a run back in the top of the fifth with Nick Lombardi leading off with a double and scoring on a Matt Parisi ground out to third base. The long ball got that run back for the Lions in the bottom half of the frame. This time it was Vandercook sending a shot over the right field wall, extending the Lions’ lead to 5-2.

Paller added his second RBI to his stat line in the bottom of the seventh, doubling to bring home Jordan Serena. The Lions carried that 6-2 lead the rest of the way, with George Thanopoulos coming on to get the final three outs to clinch the win.

For the second straight game, Columbia blasted a pair of home runs to support a strong pitching effort, knocking off Dartmouth, 4-1, to clinch the Ivy League title. Vandercook hit his second homer of the day and Gus Craig launched his sixth of the year to help provide the necessary run support for Columbia starter Kevin Roy. Thomas Crispi and Thanopoulos each tossed just over an inning of relief, with the later earning his second save of the year.

Similar to game one, Dartmouth got on the board first, scoring the initial run in the bottom of the third. Parisi led off the frame with a single through the left side and moved around to third on a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch. Thomas Roulis completed Parisi’s trip around the bases with a single to left center.

Columbia would not let the Dartmouth lead stand for long, putting up three runs in the top of the fourth. Savage led off the inning reaching safely on a throwing error by Nick Lombardi at third, which would come back to cost the Big Green in a big way. Dartmouth was able to get the next two batters, but Silbar got the Lions on the board with a single to center to score Savage. Craig gave the Lions the lead for good in the next at bat, putting a charge into a 2-2 pitch, sending it over the right field wall for two more runs and a 3-1 Columbia lead.

Roy continued to do his part on the hill, breezing through the fifth and sixth with two three-up, three-down innings. With Columbia up in the top of the seventh, the rain started to come down and forced the game into a 46 minute delay, ending Roy’s day with just three hits and one earned run allowed.

After the delay, Crispi took over on the hill and was forced into a jam when Dartmouth put runners on second and third with one out, but the sophomore lefty buckled down and got a ground out with the infield playing in and a fly out to end the threat.

Vandercook provided an insurance tally for Columbia in the top of the ninth, driving the first pitch he saw over the familiar right field wall to extend the lead to 4-1.

Thanopoulos came on in relief for the second time on the day, getting the Lions final five outs to celebrate both wins from the mound.

On a snowy morning and early afternoon at Robertson Field at Satow Stadium, Columbia was edged, 5-4, in game one of a doubleheader against Dartmouth.

Columbia struck first in the second inning and went ahead after a Gus Craig singled and stole second base. First-year Randell Kanemaru, in his first game back after missing time due to an injury, put together great at bat and recorded an opposite field single to make it 1-0.

Dartmouth responded swiftly in the third, notching back-to-back hits and two walks to even things up. Starting pitcher Kevin Roy buckled down and retired the next two batters, but they were productive outs which allowed the go-ahead runs to come in.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Lions put together a two-out rally. Gus Craig doubled down leftfield line and Vandercook pulled a single to right, cutting the deficit to, 3-2. Columbia had chance to tie the score after Kanemaru singled to the same spot as he did in the second, but Vandercook was thrown out and third after taking a wide turn trying to score.

The Big Green added a pair of key insurance runs in the sixth. A Nick Ruppert double and an error put runners on the corners to set up a squeeze bunt by Adam Gauthier to extend the advantage to 4-2. Matt Parisi followed with an RBI single to left to tack on one more.

Those runs proved to be important as Columbia scratched out two of its own in the bottom of the frame. Robb Paller, also returning from an injury, and an infield single put runners on first and third with one out. Craig knocked in Paller with a sac fly and David Vandercook pulled a double down the line to score pinch-runner Shane Adams to pull the Lions within a run.

Columbia had one last chance in the bottom of the seventh when Will Savage drew a two-out walk and moved into scoring position after a wild pitch. However, Dartmouth starting pitcher Mike Concato induced a game-ending groundout to preserve the win.

Columbia received a strong start from senior pitcher Mike Weisman to pick up a 4-1 victory over Dartmouth in game two. Weisman tossed 6.2 innings of scoreless ball, allowing just two hits while striking out two.

Both starting pitchers were effective early, but the Lions began the scoring in the bottom of the third. Will Savage stretched a single into a double on what looked like a routine single and scored on a poke to leftfield by Jordan Serena.

Columbia added to its lead in the fourth when Gus Craig tripled off the wall in right, narrowly missing a solo homer. Randell Kanemaru drew a walk to put runners on the corners for Loghan Boyher. Boyher hit a ball to the hole that second baseman Justin Fowler tracked down moving to his right, but the junior catcher just beat out the throw to first, extending the margin to 2-0.

Serena picked up a leadoff double, similar to Savage’s in the third. Craig followed with a single to bring in Serena and wound up on third after the ball squirted by the rightfielder. David Vandercook made it 4-0 with double off the high wall in right-center to bring in Craig.

Weisman was lifted after giving up a double with two outs in the seventh. Bryce Barr came on and hit the first batter he faced and walked the next one to load the bases. However, Barr got out of the inning unscathed with a ground out to second.

Dartmouth threatened again in the top of the ninth when Matt Robinson issued back-to-back walks to start the inning. After a fly out which helped the runner on second advance to third, Adam Gauthier hit a slow grounder towards second base for an infield single to break up the shutout bid.

Harrisen Egly then came in out of the bullpen, but walked the first batter he faced to load the bases and bring the potential go-ahead run to the plate. However, Egly settled in and struck out the next two hitters for his third save of the season.

HEAD COACH BRETT BORETTI

DAVIDSON ‘94 • 10TH SEASON328-328-1 OVERALL

212-247-1 AT COLUMBIA

Since his arrival at Columbia in July 2005, Brett Boretti has revitalized the Columbia Baseball program in every aspect, building the Lions into a perennial Ivy League contender.

Under his leadership, Boretti has led the Lions to four Gehrig Division titles, three Ivy League championships, a number of wins over major programs and the first NCAA tournament victory in program history.

In his ninth year at the helm, Boretti led Columbia to its most successful season in program history in 2014. A program-record 15-game win streak helped the Lions amass 29 wins, the most ever. Columbia once again captured the Gehrig Division, shutting out Penn in a one-game playoff, 4-0, and then swept Dartmouth for the second straight season in the Ivy League Championship Series to claim the program’s 12 conference title and third with Boretti as head coach. The conference title punched Columbia’s ticket to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season, traveling this year to Coral Gables, Florida to compete on the national stage.

Two of Boretti’s players in the last seven years have been Ivy League Player of the Year (Henry Perkins, 2008 and Dario Pizzano, 2012), two have been named Pitcher of the Year (Pat Lowery, 2010 and David Speer, 2014) and three have been named Rookie of the Year (Nick Cox, 2008, Dario Pizzano, 2010 and WIll Savage, 2014)). In 2014, Columbia had 11 players selected to All-Ivy League teams, bringing the total of players to receive conference recognition under Boretti’s leadership to 59, including 21 first team selections.

Over the course of the last three years four of Boretti’s players have been drafted by Major League clubs and another has signed as a free agent. Pizzano and Lowery were selected in the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft and signed professional contracts. The Seattle Mariners selected Pizzano in the 15th round of the MLB Draft and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim chose Lowery in the 21st round. In the 2013 MLB amateur draft, Alex Black was taken in the 29th round by the Kansas City Royals. Following the draft, Tim Giel signed a free agent contract with the New York Yankees. In 2014, Speer was selected in the 27th round by the Cleveland Indians.

The 2013 season set a new standard for the program to build on. Columbia tied what was then the single-season win mark, capturing 28 victories, while setting a new standard for Ivy League wins. The Lions were the gold standard in the Ivy League, winning 16 coference games and then swept Dartmouth in the Ivy League Championship Series for the second Ancient Eight title

under Boretti’s direction. Statistically, the Lions paced the Ivy League in both batting average (.286) and ERA (1.94) in conference-only games.

Winning the Ivy League Championship ensured Columbia a spot in the NCAA Baseball Championship for the third time in program history. The Lions went on to win their first game ever in NCAA play, toppling New Mexico, 6-5, in 13 innings. On an individual basis, nine players garnered All-Ivy League recognition, including three first team selections, the most since 2010.

The 2012 campaign proved to be another strong season for Columbia, winning 20 games for the second time in three seasons and finished with a .600 winning percentage in the Ivy League for the second time during that span.

In 2009, Boretti guided the Lions to the program’s first victories over teams from Texas (#23 Lamar) and California (Cal State Northridge).

In 2008, Boretti led Columbia to its first Ivy League Championship since 1977 as the Lions established a new program record for most Ivy League wins in a season with 15. After defeating Dartmouth in a best-of-three series, Columbia received an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, marking its first appearance since 1976.

During Boretti’s tenure, Columbia’s facilities also have been revitalized, as Robertson Field at Satow Stadium has been transformed into one of the best college baseball facilities in the Ivy League and in the Northeast. In the fall of 2007, the playing surface was rebuilt with FieldTurf™, enabling the Lions to have more outdoor practice opportunities during the offseason.

Another upgrade took place during the summer of 2010, when stadium-style seating was installed, adding to the stadium’s capacity. Included in the renovations were upgraded dugouts and an extended press box.

Prior to coming to Morningside Heights in July 2005 as just the third Lion head coach in 25 years, Boretti was the head coach at Franklin & Marshall College, posting a 116-82 record over five seasons.

The Diplomats made history in 2005 when Boretti coached the team to a 25-16 record, including a school record-setting 15-3 mark in Centennial Conference play. Franklin & Marshall won the conference title for only the second time in school history and ranked

seventh in the final American Baseball Coaches Association Mid-Atlantic Region poll.

Franklin & Marshall posted 24 or more wins in three of Boretti’s five seasons as head coach.

Boretti served two years, 1998-2000, as an assistant coach at Brown. During his tenure with the Bears, he coordinated recruiting efforts, coached hitting and the outfield, and was responsible for all daily operations of the program.

Boretti coached at his alma mater, Davidson, from 1996-98, following a one-year stint at Endicott College in his hometown of Beverly, Massachusetts.

Inducted into the Davidson Athletics Hall of Fame in January 2010, Boretti was one of the Wildcats’ best all-time players. He went on to become the most prolific hitting catcher in Davidson history, earning two All-Southern Conference first-team honors, and still remains as the only Davidson player to be named to the All-SoCon Tournament team.

Boretti’s junior year was his best, when he led the squad with a .386 average and slugged .705 with 17 doubles and 13 home runs (with just 13 strikeouts) while driving in 48.

A model of durability, he started all but two games at catcher in his last three years, plus set school records for being hit by a pitch in a season (16) and a career (25). Among career records, Boretti ranks first in sacrifice flies, second in doubles, fourth in total bases, fifth in RBI, tied for fifth in home runs, eighth in games played and tenth in batting average. He earned All-Southern Conference first team honors in 1993 and 1994.

A team captain and Most Valuable Player in 1994, he also was named to the Southern Conference’s academic honor roll. Boretti also played football at Davidson and was Offensive Player of the Year in 1990 as a freshman.

While attending Davidson, he participated in the prestigious Cape Cod League in the summer of 1992 and 1993 and made the all-star squad in 1993.

After college, he was an all-star catcher for the North Central Professional Baseball League champion Brainerd Bears of Minnesota. In 1995, he spent spring training as a catcher with the Cleveland Indians.

Boretti and his wife, Melissa, have three children.
