Potentate’s Message

It is truly an honor to serve as the 129th Potentate of Almas Shiners. I would like to thank Almas for its support through the years as Elected Divan as well as the appointed Divan. During the past seven years, Almas has given me the opportunity to learn and be trained for the position of Potentate. I have attended numerous Membership classes in Tampa, Florida. I began as Oriental Guide in 2011, High Priest and Prophet in 2012, Assistant Rabban in 2013, Chief Rabban in 2014 and finally Potentate in 2015.

Since 1922, the top priority of our organization has been to provide assistance and medical care to chil-dren in need of orthopaedic, burn and spinal cord injury, and cleft lip and palate care. This year, I intend to continue our work to increase Membership. In order to accomplish this goal, the Chairman, Committee of Membership and I will be visit-ing the Blue Lodges to recruit new members to join our Fraternity. Let’s not forget we also have the sup-port of our South American Nobles especially from Brazil (with clubs in Brasilia, Espirito Santo and Sao Paulo), Bolivia and Uruguay. We know they will work hard in order to increase our Membership.

I would like to ask everyone to please join me and participate in the Super Bowl, Valentine’s, Saint Patrick’s and Easter events. The Potentate’s Ball will take place on Saturday, April 25th. The Potentate’s Cruise will be from April 28th to May 8th, The Mid Atlantic Shrine Motor Corp Installation will be on Saturday, May 9th at Almas Temple and the Ceremo-nial will be on Saturday, June 13th.

Since I became Potentate on Janu-ary 3, I have attended two installa-tions; Illustrious Sir Jim Marshall at Kena Temple in Fairfax, Virginia and Illustrious Sir Gary Freeman in Ali Ghan Shriners in Cumberland, Mary-land. Imperial Sir Raoul Frevel, Sr., prepared their installation as well as mine and I would like to take the time to thank him for the fantastic work as usual. On Wednesday, January 7th I visited the Benjamin French Lodge in Georgetown Masonic Lodge. I had the pleasure to meet WB David Yao, Master of the Lodge, whom I would like to thank for his hospitality. I promise to visit again soon.

Lady Ingrid and I are deeply thankful to everyone who attended my instal-lation. I am happy to say it was a suc-cess and we had a great time.

Special thanks to Noble Alberto Hugo Caneto who traveled from Uruguay to attend, Noble Eduardo Padilla Her-nandez and his wife Tania Otero, who traveled from Columbia and Noble Victor Rivas Mendoza, who traveled from Florida. It was an honor having everyone present.

Daughters of the Nile

Chief RabbanGreetings Nobles, As we look back over the events of January, we see all sorts of activities starting in the New Year. First was the Installation of a new Potentate and officers who will guide Almas through 2015. Just remember we are not “miracle workers” and we need the support of every member of Almas. Our outgoing Potentate, John R. Garrison, should be congratulated for a job well done. Our first business meeting took place on January 8th and the budget for 2015 was presented to the membership for approval. The Almas Yacht Club held its annual Commodor’s Ball on January 17th and the new Commodore, Mike Porco, was installed along with the officers for 2015. Many members of Shrine Yacht Clubs from the Mid-Atlantic area were present and had a wonderful time.

The Board of Directors met for the first time under the gavel of our new Potentate Luis Cisneros to set the agenda for the coming year. Finally, I attended the Northwest-BCC Shrine Club installation of officers. So much for January, now we look forward to the activities of February.

The first event is the Super Bowl Party on February 1. Come and root for your favorite team along with your friends and family It should be a great time. Then get dressed up and treat your Lady to a great evening of fine dining and dancing at the Almas Valentine’s Day celebration. It should be a fine evening of good food, good friends and good fellowship.

Please don’t skip out on your Unit or Club meetings. Your support and participation is critical to their success. So you can see we are off to a great start in 2015. Come on everyone and join in the fun and help make Almas the place to go.

Yours in the FaithFred EvansChief Rabban

It was my pleasure to attend the Open Installation for the Almas Shriners on January 3, 2015. It was my first time witnessing a Shrine Installation and I was very impressed! It was full of tradition and ceremony, while still keeping a light atmosphere. My grandfather was a member of the Jaffa Shriners in Altoona, PA. I used to go to parades and watch for him to march by in his fez as a Greeter, but beyond that I know very little about the Shrine. My association with the Shrine through Daughters of the Nile has helped me gain a better understanding of a part of my grandfather’s life which he really enjoyed. Thank you to the Almas Shriners for the invitation.

On January 11th, some of the ladies got together and made tray favors to send to the Philadelphia Hospital. We transformed toilet paper tubes into colorful treats using wrapping paper and filled

them with toys and small goodies for the children. We enjoyed making them and hope that the children have fun with them.

Samla Temple will be holding an open installation on March 15th at 2:00 pm. We hope you will mark your calendars and join us as we kick off a new year!

Director’s StaffHAPPY NEW YEAR from the Director’s Staff. We hope that you have had a great holiday season and are looking forward to an even greater 2015.

It now becomes our duty to inform you of the results of the 2014 White House Holiday Ornament Project.

At the Installation of Officers held on Saturday, January 3, 2015 the Al-mas Director’s Staff was proud to present to Past Potentate, John R. Gar-rison, a check in the amount of $2,362.32 for the Almas Transportation Fund. This amount reflects all the profits from last year’s project plus a generous donation.

We originally purchased 300 ornaments through Holly’s Treasure Chest which is owned and operated by Noble Jay Barmack and his wife Holly. Jay is the son of Past Potentate Sam Bar-mack and First Lady Thelma. Their shop is located at 900 Coastal Highway, Fenwick Island, DE so if you are in the Ocean City, Maryland area, please stop in and thank them for their support of this project and while you are there do a little shopping. They have a very large selection of items. Jay and Holly sell us the ornaments at their cost which means more money for the Transportation Fund. A special thank you goes out to Noble Jay and Holly for their contin-ued support of this project.

I also had to purchase 90 additional ornaments directly from the White House Historical Society to complete all the orders that we received. This gave us a total of 390 ornaments sold which is a 30% increase over the 2013 ornament project.

Past First Lady Christine Watson donated 12 ornaments from previous years that her sister had collected. She asked us to sell these ornaments and to donate whatever we could get for them to the Transportation Fund. We sold all 12 at a cost of $10.00 each. This helped some people to get some of the years that they had missed to complete their collec-tions. Thank you, Lady Christine, for your generous donation.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who purchased the ornaments, from those who purchased one for their own collection to those who purchased larger amount for their friends, businesses or groups. And last but not least, a HUGE thank you goes out to everyone who helped the Director’s Staff by selling and promoting the project wherever they went.

Your in the FaithGeorge WhetzelPresident
