    76th Edition www.EvergreenBoysState.org

  • June 27, 2015 To the Washington State Legion Posts, The impact of Evergreen Boy’s State on me and my fellow citizens is truly profound. I can only list a few of our experiences and their effect. To begin, I can assure you that each and every citizen of Evergreen Boy’s State has gained a greater sense of political efficacy because of our experience here. From learning about policy issues to figuring out how to enact change at the local and state levels, we have all gained powerful lessons that will aid us in becoming better Washingtonian and American citizens. Secondly, our experiences with mock government, especially during the second half of the week, were truly inspiring for me and many other citizens. Some friends I knew who had no ambition of becoming civil servants are now thoroughly interested in perusing careers in politics, the legal system, the bureaucracy, or the armed forces. Finally, the friends and connections we’ve made at Boy’s State are truly invaluable. During discussion groups, fellow citizens marveled at the common ground and intellectual stimulation they’ve encountered this week. These experiences form long-lasting bonds that will continue after Boy’s State is over, especially in the age of social media and Internet communication. However, the experience of Boy’s State would not be possible without you, the American Legion. Not only does your organization fund and organize this entire experience, but your volunteers and staffers come to the program with a contagious passion for civics, which enlivens and empowers each and every citizen. I know many of the senior staff makes significant sacrifices in order to attend and coordinate the program—some taking leave from military duty or flying in from out-of-state. I speak for the whole of our citizenry when I sincerely thank every Legion member who has helped coordinate this program. Even after making immense sacrifices to support our country in the armed forces, they continue to promote its welfare by educating and politically socializing the next generation of leaders. It is truly phenomenal. Again, thank you to all the members of the Washington American Legion posts, who have either directly or indirectly helped this exceptional program.

Sincerely, Dylan Milligan, 2015 Boy’s State Governor

    Snohomish County Sheriff

    Mr. Ty Trenary

Mr. Ty Trenary, Snohomish County Sheriff, spoke with the

delegates of Evergreen Boys State Monday morning.

What I learned from Mr. Ty Trenary…

“I learned that police brutality is not nearly as common

as people seem to think, and I also learned that drug-

sniffing dogs are very expensive. In addition, I learned

that while being a cop can be a very brutal job at times,

    it is also very rewarding.”

    -James Cooke, City of Elm

“I learned a lot about how the major problems are

connected and what they can do or are already doing to

    stop them.”

    -Spencer Germer, City of Fir

“I learned imporant things about drugs, homelessness,

policing in America and important things about how

drug cartels move their product. The speaker was very

good and he gave me great insight on how our police

    department works.”

    -Theodore Falip, City of Cedar

    WA Representative 25th District

    Mr. Hans Zeiger

Mr. Hans Zeiger, Representative from the 25th

    Legislative

District, spoke with the delegates of Evergreen Boys State

Tuesday afternoon about State government and how important it is to have new voices take their turn in

    government.

What I learned from Mr. Hans Zeiger…

“Mr, Zeiger, you are a very driven and passionate

person and that is clear in your speaking. For so long

my image of politicians has been negative and selfish.

Thanks to you, my image has changed. For the most

part…Thanks to you and your passion and inspiration,

I have gained respect and somewhat sympathy for our

representatives. Thank you again for your speech and

    your time!”

    -Nathan Sanders, City of Alder

“I learned how a state legislator manages his numerous

responsibilities. The importance of relationships in the

political realm and the importance of going door to

    door for state elections.”

    -James Cooke, City of Elm

“I personally enjoyed Mr. Hans Zeiger’s presentation a

lot. I thought that he was very interesting and I liked

how he was young and connected with us as ‘young

dudes’. Especially as he was a Boys’ State Alumni

    from recently, not decades ago.”

    -Braden Huntington, City of Fir
