Vision: Preparing tomorrow's family physicians to enhance the health and well-being of the communities they serve by defining and providing state-of-the art healthcare. Mission: To lead the way in educating the next generation of physicians, by Modeling the patient-centered principles of Family Medicine, Serving our community’s health needs, and Contributing to the scholarly advancement of medicine

1Statement from the

Chair/Associate Dean The Department of Family Medicine added faculty, energized the Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG), graduated residents and welcomed ten more into the new Five Rivers Family Health Center, wrote and succeeded in securing grant funding and partnered with a variety of community organizations to address health care needs. The dashboard below compares our progress during 2015 with earlier years.

Medical Education: Our goal is to attract more students to family medicine. This year AAFP awarded our FMIG with an excellence award for the most improved. Drs. Binder, Zink and resident physicians, Meagan Ebetino and Paul Krebs, talked to the first year class over the lunch hour about the dimensions of family medicine. FMIG activities included two book groups with a rural and inner city under-served focus (The Country Doctor Revisited and Not All of Us Are Saints), a BSOM writing group which is planning a student anthology, and a variety of discussions: What the Affordable Care Act Means for My Career (Dr. Barb Tobias), Leaders in Family Medicine (Drs. Marjorie Bowman, Ron Stout, and Mark Williams), and a superutilizer interest group. In partnership with Research Affairs at BSOM, 35 students speed dated FM faculty to learn about research opportunities. We launched the Annual Preceptor Appreciation Dinner to thank preceptors for their time in educating our students and awarded Dr. Ryan Bayko, Fairborn, the Family Medicine Preceptor of the Year Award.

The residency continues to be solid with a 100% fill rate and seven of ten graduates remaining in Ohio. The residency/faculty practice at Five Rivers became certified as a Level 3 Patient Centered Medical Home by NCQA. Behavioral Director Paul Hershberger was awarded a SAMHSA grant for training medical students, residents and other health professionals about SBIRT – Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment, an evidence-based practice used to identify, reduce, and prevent problematic use, abuse, and dependence on alcohol and illicit drugs. Dr. Renee Crichlow, the founder of TheLadder, a progressive mentoring program, launched in the neighborhood of the Minneapolis Broadway Family Medicine residency, was invited to speak after residents met her at the Annual Society of Teachers of Family Medicine meeting in Orlando, FL. Medical students and residents started a chapter in North Dayton. Residents had a strong showing at the DAGMEC and took 2nd place for their poster on the Senior Immunizations Project.

Patient Care: PCMH certification was secured under the guidance of faculty medical directors: Five Rivers Family Health Center (Dr. Elizabeth Righter) and at Wright State Physicians Family Health Center (Dr. Donald Clark).

Scholarship/Research expansion included the hiring of Jayna Vossler as Research Manager who brings six years of experience from OSU. Drs. Kate Cauley and Josephine Wilson from the Department of Community Health continued to assist us with our grant writing efforts. We secured funding from the Ohio HealthPath Foundation to implement a third year clerkship and a rural residency track near the WSU Lake campus, and a faculty
