The Lawrence Arts Center’s Free State Festival is a week-long celebration of film, music, art, and ideas in the heart of Lawrence’s Cultural District. Started as a small independent film festival in
2011 by the Lawrence Arts Center’s Director of Film and Digital Media, Marlo Angell, the Free State Festival showcases more than fifteen feature films and over twenty short films, outdoor concerts,
stage performances, digital media installations, and provocative panel discussions.

Join award-winning novelist and screenwriter Dennis Lehane for a talk about his literary and cinematic career.
Since his first novel, A Drink Before the War, won the Shamus Award, Lehane has published ten internationally bestselling novels that have been translated into more than 30 languag-es. Mystic River; Gone, Baby, Gone; and Shutter Island have been adapted into award-win-ning films. Lehane has worked as a writer on the acclaimed HBO series The Wire and the 4th season of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire. He completed his first trilogy of historical fiction to critical acclaim with the publication of World Gone By this past March.

Girls Club of Lawrence to produce this unique showcase of short films for the 2015 Free State
Festival. Working closely with festival staff in intensive weekly classes in digital filmmaking,
the young filmmakers gained skills in screenwrit-ing, cinematography, sound recording, editing
and sound design using Lawrence as a common element and backdrop of the films.

Keep up the punk vibe with a performance by Mike Watt after the screening of The Damned: Don’t You Wish that We Were Dead. Watt is an American bassist, singer, and songwriter, best known for co-founding the rock bands Minutemen, Dos, and Firehose. He is currently the bassist for the reunited Stooges, and is a member of the art rock/jazz/punk/improve group Banyan as well as other post-Minutemen projects. In November 2008, Watt received the Bass Player Magazine lifetime achievement award. (SEE RELATED E VENT PAGE 5 )

GEORGE CLINTON AND PARLIAMENT-FUNKADELIC PERFORM LIVE OUTSIDE THE LAWRENCE ARTS CENTER.
Recording both as Parliament and Funkadelic, George Clinton revolutionized R&B during the ‘70s, twisting soul music into funk and recording over 40 R&B hit singles (including three #1s) and three platinum albums. Clinton has received a Grammy Award, a Dove (gospel) Award, and an MTV Music Video Award, and has been recognized by BMI, the NAACP Image Awards, and the Motown Alumni Association for lifetime achievement. Clinton’s Parlia-ment-Funkadelic was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. On February 6th, 2012, Clinton added to his list of accomplishments an Honorary Doctorate of Music from the renowned Berklee College of Music.

In partnership with the Tour of Lawrence, the Lawrence Arts Center presents Split Lip Rayfield, a band that has carved out a unique genre of music with unmatched sound and instrumentation. Often described as a mix of bluegrass and country with an accent of metal, no other band delivers the experience of the homemade gas-tank bass played by Jeff Eaton, sets the mandolin strings on fire like Wayne Gottstine, or makes the banjo sing like Eric Mardis.
