According to Jenna that message would stand the test of time. She was the bubbly half of the 2014 royal couple. Thomas (Tommy) Shaw was the organizer half. During the Early Bird in- terview prior to the start of the Annie Oakley parade, he was called a half doz- en times about the Royal Court’s entries. During the past year? “We were like a family,” said Tommy. “We had our differences, but in pub- lic we did it right!” Jenna praised her court. “I loved how awesome our court was,” Jenna said. “They were perfect. Asked to do something? They did it.” Now that their year was over, both acknowledged some sadness. “It’s kind of bittersweet,” Jenna said. The royal couple had multiple experiences they will always remember, hu- morous and otherwise. One favorite part for Tommy was the Skylift at the Ohio State Fair. “Yeah,” Jenna said, laughing. She heard a scream and asked one of her friends if it was her. “No,” came the answer. “That was Tommy!” “I’m a people person,” Tommy said. “I enjoyed going to the county fairs, talking to the people. We got to experience the hid- den secrets of the other fairs… the glamor and the hardship.” Jenna enjoyed the state fair, noting she’d never been there before. “The queen’s contest was an experience in itself,” she said. Katherine, the 2015 Ohio Fair Queen was a freshman at Ohio State University. “We instantly clicked,” Jenna said. The phone rang again; Tommy backed off to an- swer it. “He’s very good at handling all that parade stuff,” Jenna said. The book. “I loved that book,” Jenna said. “At first I was kind of shocked, but all past queens gave their input to guide you during your term. I wrote 11 pages of do’s and don’ts… tips on the things we wanted to do but didn’t get done.” She added they were helping the court this year… giving them their baby steps. “It’s not scary,” she added. “It’s exciting!” Tommy talked about the hard work and the reward. “What you put into it is what you get out of it,” he said. He also talked about his previous attempts to serve as Darke County Fair King. “It’s been my dream since my sister was Queen in 2004… if you have the goal and the dream, keep trying!” Finally he noted the im- portance of the job once the goal is reached… “What you do impacts the future,” he said. “Our proof is in that building (the Youth Building). All the legacies are there. The tradition.” Both were grateful to their families and court families, the junior and se- nior fairboards… all those who helped make their year a success. “They were fantastic,” Jenna said. “We thank them so much.” GREENVILLE – Hunter Hayes will headline the an- nual concert at the Great Darke County Fair on Aug. 23 during the 159th Great Darke Fair. Four-time GRAMMY nominee Hunter Hayes is a Louisiana-born, Nashville- based singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who roared onto the music scene in 2011 with his Plat- inum-selling, No. 1 self-ti- tled debut album on Atlan- tic Records. With three No. 1 singles already under his belt (including the multi- Platinum smash “Wanted,” “Somebody’s Heartbreak,” and “I Want Crazy”), Hayes delves into deeper mate- rial on his new album, Storyline. The emotional lead single “Invisible” reso- nates with fans across the globe and new single “Tat- too” is already Top 25 and climbing at Country radio. GREENVILLE The Darke County Fair Safety Committee wants to re- mind local citizens of the traffic pattern that will be in place during the Great Darke County Fair. As many may recall last year, a new traffic pattern was put into effect at Gate 1 of the Darke County Fair- grounds. Gate 1 is located at the intersection of Sweitzer Street and Birt Street. The purpose of the change is to improve the overall safety of pedestrian traffic that crosses at that intersection during the week of the fair. Lane restrictions were put into place and efforts were made to clearly mark the pedestrian crossing areas. At the conclusion of last year’s fair the safety com- mittee along with the sup- port of all agencies involved decided to keep this in place for future fairs. The traffic pattern received positive re- views from fair attendees. A clearly marked pedes- trian crosswalk is in place that crosses Sweitzer Street and Birt Street. The cross- walk leads pedestrians to the walk-in entrance to the fair. The southbound traf- fic of Sweitzer Street shall remain in a single lane of traffic until passing the Gate 1 area. Any traffic ex- iting Gate 1 from the fair must turn right (south) on to Sweitzer Street. North- bound traffic on Sweitzer Street can continue north as normal. Any north- bound traffic may also turn east on Birt Street as nor- mal. Birt Street westbound will be closed at Central Ave to eliminate any traffic from entering onto Sweitzer Street from that direction. The lanes of travel in this area will be clearly marked with cones and verticades to assist motorists in re- maining in their appropri- ate lanes until clearing the Gate 1 area. Citizens can expect to see the signs and cones to be in place approximately Wednesday or Thursday prior to the fair. The traffic pattern will be in effect Fri- day morning of the fair. There will be a clearly marked off area for pedes- trians to walk in the grass area on the west side of Sweitzer Street and south of the Gate 1 entrance. This is to assist pedestrians com- ing from parking areas or businesses on that side of the street and eliminate the need for them to walk on the street when approach- ing Gate 1. Arrangements have been made for businesses in the area to still be accessible; however, you must obey the appropriate traffic signals and signs. The Darke County Sher- iff’s Office and Greenville Police Department will be patrolling these areas to as- sist and make sure vehicu- lar and pedestrian traffic have a safe Darke County Fair. GREENVILLE – The Darke County Jr. Fair Sheep committee will once again sponsor a scholarship fund at the 2015 Jr. Fair Lamb Sale at the Great Darke County Fair. Scholarships are given to Jr. Fair mem-bers who have completed market lamb or breeding sheep projects through 4-H or FFA in Darke County in at least 3 of the last 4 years. GREENVILLE – Old Man Hits Chickens and Hits it Big! Just this past week lo-cal oldster/prankster Gran-pa Cratchet lost control, again, of his old truck com-ing down Big Haller Road. Those first on the scene thought the big landing had occurred and space aliens were taking over. What first appeared to be little white fluffy tuffs were seen falling out of the sky. An out of con-trol vehicle of some unusual form had been seen streak-ing across the county just minutes earlier, all prompt-

ing calls to the local Sheriff’s office.

However, closer exami-nation proved the white tuffs to be feathers. With no proof of aliens local members of the Sharpsville Chapter of BARF (Bi-Plane-tary Alien Research Forum), who were first on the scene, promptly dismissed the in-cident to swamp gas and ad-journed to the General Store in downtown Sharpsville for further discussion on the impact of feathers on the average bi-planetary alien researcher .

With the arrival of the Sheriff and the settling of all the dust and commotion it was discovered to be nothing more than Granpa Cratchet gone out of control again in his old truck, this time land-ing smack dab in the middle of Granma’s chicken coop. The local mortician, also the county coroner, arrived and pronounced the supposed alien beings as chickens, who were now simply too squashed up to recognize as anything from planet Earth.

Granpa claims his brakes went out, but most folks around here think his eyesight is what’s really out. When they finally got Granpa out of the chicken feeder he was lodged in they thought he had suf-fered trauma to the head, but it turns out he was just muttering about what was going to happen to him when Granma (his mother) found out he ran over all her chickens. He says, as a direct answer to prayer for deliverance (from Gran-ma), he got an inspiration

from Heaven and decided to open a new restaurant featuring various assorted chicken plates. Granpa has already set a promotional campaign in motion with a new slogan, “Chicken is always more tender when scrapped from a fender” or “Chicken tastes real good right off a truck hood.” He can’t decide which.

In any case, the whole family will have tons of fun and lots of laughs as the kids learn the importance of working together. You can visit Granpa anytime at his home on the web at www.oldcoot.com. You can see him live when Granpa, Granma and Cousin Clem have the grand opening of their new Chicken Coop and Road Side Café during the 159th Great Darke County Fair that runs August 21-29, 2015.

It’s all free and sure to be as big a smash hit as the accident itself. Come and watch as Clem dem-onstrates his new hydro-powered atomic chicken

Lots of fun planned with Granpa Cratchet cooker. Granma, who can’t hear too well and can see even less, will be waiting on tables while Granpa tries to catch the few remaining live chickens.

It’s all a barrel of laughs with Granpa Cratchet who appears all around the county in more than two

thousand shows a year and has been spotlighted on Good Morning America, Entertainment Tonight and many other national, re-gional and local TV shows. It’s all free and part of the great entertainment lineup at The Great Darke County Fair.

Plan to stop in for a bite to eat with Granpa Cratchet, if you dare, or just join in on the fun at the Great Darke County Fair.

[email protected] – Striv-

ing for greatness was 2015 Darke County Fair Queen Danielle Hesson’s goal dur-ing her reign in the coming year, while 2015 Fair King AJ Warner wanted to use the life lessons he learned through Junior Fair, espe-cially about being a good sport, a good role model.

Hesson appeared shocked as the tiara was placed on her head… she later confirmed it with “No, I can’t believe it.” The 16-year-old Versailles High School student was sponsored by the Ver-sailles FFA Chapter. She is the daughter of Doug and Sherry Hesson. She was clear about her goal, how-ever… “I want to make this fair the best fair possible,” she said.

Warner quipped he felt comfortable on stage be-cause he had taken an Edi-son Community College communications (public speaking) course. A few minutes later the 17-year-old Franklin Monroe stu-dent responded seriously

to the honor he’d been given… “There’s a lot more weight on my shoulders,” he said. Warner was spon-sored by the Top Notch 4-H Club; he is the son of Pat and Shelly Warner.

First Runners-up are 18-year-old Rachel Oster-loh and 17-year-old Bryant Fox. Osterloh is a Bowl-ing Green State University student from Versailles sponsored by the Live-stock in General 4-H Club. She is the daughter of Luke and Sharon Osterloh. Fox attends Ansonia High School and is sponsored by Greenville Rangers 4-H Club. He is the son of Tom Fox and Spring Fox.

Second Runners-up are 18-year-old MacKenzie Dirmeyer and 16-year-old Thomas Schmitz. Dirmey-er is a Wilmington College student from Fort Recov-ery. She was sponsored by Mississinawa Valley MVCTC FFA and is the daughter of David and Me-lissa Dirmeyer. Schmitz is a Mississinawa Valley High School student sponsored by the Junior Fair Board. He is the son of Don and

Tina Schmitz.Third Runners-up are

17-year-old Alyssa Morgan and 17-year-old John Fis-cher. Morgan is a Versailles High School student spon-sored by the Versailles FFA Chapter. She is the daugh-ter of Aaron and Stephanie Morgan. Fischer is an An-sonia High School student sponsored by the Ansonia FFA. He is the son of John and Amanda Fischer.

The 2015 Darke Coun-ty Fair King and Queen Pageant took place at the Lighthouse Christian Cen-ter July 14. Also compet-ing in the pageant were Zak Peele (Joyful Jets 4-H Club), Brianna Ashmore (Kountry Kids 4-H Club), Megan Bergman (Grade A Kids 4-H Club), Lily George (Darke County Beef 4-H Club), Brenna Loxley (Swine Koolers 4-H Club), Kaelyn Marker (Darke County Jr. Fairboard), Morgan McKinney (Darke County Rabbit Raisers 4-H Club), Mariana Ramos (Fun Bunch 4-H Club) and Katerri Schmitmeyer (Darke County Holstein 4-H Club).

GREENVILLE – For more than 30 years Robert and Diane Moyer have been training and caring for their animal companions of many species, from horses to dogs to ponies, camels, llamas, tigers, lions and elephants.

After performing on al-most every major American circus, they proudly present their most accomplished presentation, “Wambolds Amazing Animals.”

This is 30-minute educa-tional entertainment experi-ence that contains the most diverse group of performing big cats anywhere. The size and majesty of the Siberian Tiger, the rare beauty of the White Tiger, the mystery of the allusive Liger, and the historic Bengal Tiger are all performing in the great cage together. Learn how endan-gered the tiger truly is and at what lengths the world is going to save this great cat and what needs to be done to prevent extinction. At the same time putting that glimmer in your eye, while you watch some of the most beautiful creatures on earth, perform some of their favorite behaviors, be-fore your eyes.

Watch as Pincachue & Mishue, Wambold’s per-

forming miniature horses, perform at Liberty. Two of the smallest performing miniature horses anywhere. Next enters their proud-est accomplishment, “Cha-risma” a rescued miniature horse that was neglected and rescued by Wambold’s and has become the star of the show.

Finally, “Always the children’s favorite”, “Wam-bold’s K-9 Revue”. This is quite the combination of comedy and perfection, Watch as dogs of your favor-ite breeds perform comedy and daring, from tricks that your own dog may perform at home to behaviors that will leave you not believing your own eyes.

Wambold’s also provides a walk thru camel and lama exhibit for all patrons to visit throughout the day. Wambold’s Amazing Ani-mals is like getting three at-tractions in one.

The Wambold’s will perform at the 159th Great Darke County Fair three times daily (3, 5 and 7 p.m.) beginning Aug. 24 and running through Aug. 29. These shows will take place at the same location as the Elephant, Tiger and Alliga-tor Shows in past years.

GREENVILLE – Nearly $2 million is what the Darke County Agricultural Society invested in its new building – the Beef and Dairy Pavil-ion. Although the beef and dairy exhibitors were able to use the building dur-ing the 2014 Darke County Fair, the building was only partially finished. Exhibi-tors this year will get to ex-perience all of the benefits of the new multi-purpose

building.The new building was

necessary following a fire that destroyed the beef and dairy buildings on Dec. 27, 2013.

While insurance paid the majority of the new structure, according to ag-ricultural society directors, the barn would not have been possible without the support of major donors. The Andersons donated

$50,001, Second National Bank gave $30,000 and the Darke County Harness Horsemen contributed $10,001. The society also received numerous dona-tions from individuals, 4-H clubs, businesses and orga-nizations.

The total cost for the Beef & Dairy Pavilion was $1.73 million, which in-cluded new cattle ties and milking parlor.

GREENVILLE – Have you ever wondered where your wool sweater came from? Stop by the sheep barn on Aug. 26 and see how it got its start. The an-nual Darke County Sheep Shearing Contest will be held on that day at 6:30 p.m.

Any custom shearer, currently working in farm flocks, who has not pre-viously won first prize in the Ohio State Fair Senior Sheep Shearing Contest is eligible to complete in Class I. Contestants will compete in groups of four. Drop shafts shearing equipment will be furnished by Ohio Sheep Shearers Associa-tion and must be used by shaft shearers. Shearers

may use their own Shear-master. The classes are Ju-niors (open to anyone – 18 or younger as of Jan. 1), Seniors – over 18 – anyone who wins this class twice must go to Class I, County with $200 in prize money, and Champion of Cham-pions. The Champion of Champions pays $150 for first, $100 for second, $75 for third, $50 for fourth, fifth and sixth.

The contest will be judged by representatives of the Ohio Sheep Shear-ers Association, all former Ohio Champions, using the following: Time of Shear-ing – 20 points; Absence of cuts on the sheep – 15 points; Handling of sheep – 15 points; Absence of

cuts in Fleece – 20 points; Condition of Fleece – 20 points; and Appearance of Shorn Sheep – 10 points. One-hundred points are available.

First and second place trophies are donated by Larry Green and Rob San-do.

The Champion of Champions contest is open to all champions of recognized state, regional or national contests held anywhere. The 2015 win-ner of the Ohio senior shearing contest is not eligible to compete in the Champion of Champions Contest until 2016. Out of State Shearers will shear in the Champion of Cham-pions Contest.

Tractor pulls take place Aug. 25 & 26

President welcomes visitors to 159th fair

GREENVILLE – For those persons that can’t get enough of the thundering engines during the trac-tor pull, the Darke County Agricultural Society Board of Directors is one again giving an extra night. Fair goers will now be able to experience one day and two evenings of extreme horse-power.

The 35th annual Trac-tor & Truck Pull will be-gin with the Darke County Tractor Pullers Association (DCTPA) Pull on Aug. 25,

10 a.m. The big trucks and tractors take center stage on Aug. 25 and 26, 7 p.m. for the National Tractor Pullers Association (NTPA) Grand National Tractor & Truck Pull.

The dual main events will feature Super Stock Diesel Tractors, Two Wheel Drive Trucks, Mini Modi-fieds, Four Wheel Drive Trucks and Light Pro Stock Tractors. That is all on one night. Come back the next night for Minis, Super Stock Open Tractors, Super Farm

Tractors, Unlimited Modi-fied Tractors, and Light Pro Stock Tractor.

Join local tractor pull-ers during the first day and watch 10 classes of trac-tors and trucks compete for cash. This event is spon-sored by the Darke County Fair Board.

Race Track Seating is available on the south side of the Grandstand. Tickets are currently available at the fair office, by phone, 548-5044, or on-line, www.darkecoun tyfair.com.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, employees, and all the members of the Darke County Agri-cultural Society, I would like to welcome you to the 159th Great Darke County Fair.

Our goal is to provide a wide variety of enter-tainment for all fairgoers along with numerous dis-plays, vendors and con-cessions with food that

you can smell for miles.Last year with the trag-

edy of our cattle barns burning down, the Board of Directors worked hard to ensure a new build-ing was constructed in time for the 2014 fair. We would like to thank you all who made this possible through your hard work and/or donations with this project. We will con-tinue to upgrade the fair-

grounds so we can have the greatest fair.

Lastly, thank you to all the many volunteers that help, not only during the fair, but all year round in the many areas of our fair. It is because of you that our fair is as great as it is.

Hope you have a great 159th fair at the Great Darke County Fair.

Grange continues to make a differenceGREENVILLE – Be sure

to visit the Grange Building and see the displays from the current members of the Grange in Darke County. Many see the displays and think Grange is a social club

where members merely can foods, sew and do other rural life type projects. While there is an element of fellowship and socializ-ing, one may be surprised to learn the organization’s

history and what they are doing now.

The National Grange is a highly engaged rural and agricultural advocacy orga-nization that is proud to be the voice of rural America’s communities across the United States. Their 147 year legacy of remaining non-partisan allows them to advocate on behalf of their membership by letting their member-drive policy

be their guide. The Grange was the first national orga-nization to give full voice and vote to women. Fifty years before Congress ad-opted the same.

The Grange remains ac-tive in local communities and Grangers have been responsible for a myriad of service programs, from pro-viding dictionaries to third graders to raising thousands of dollars and contributing

millions of volunteer hours to worthwhile projects. Grange members support students with scholarships, provide summer camps for children, raises awareness about local and national is-sues.

Everyone is welcome to

join the Grange. The Junior Grange is open to children, 5-14. Regular Grange mem-bership is open to anyone age 14 to 104. For more information, stop by the Grange building the fair or contact Harvey Hinshaw, 621-4901.

Visitors must be age 16 and older to enter the drawings, and only those wearing a CBC t-shirt will be eligible.

This year the CBC tent will also feature the “LAB” mobile classroom. The LAB is on the move year-round visiting schools and community events. It’s a chance for students and

visitors of all ages to en-ter a hands-on learning atmosphere full of amaz-ing illustrations of how the heart, blood, and circula-tory system work. The LAB will be open to visitors dur-ing CBC T-shirt Day from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

CBC Darke County Ac-count Representative Dana Puterbaugh has again set the goal of having 200 donors wearing CBC col-ors visit the CBC tent for a photo on T-shirt Day, and to see which community will have the most repre-sentatives.

For more information contact Dana Puterbaugh at (937) 997-2199 or [email protected].

Rage and Rocko are preparing for the Great Darke County Fair.

Here are a few safety tipsMake sure you drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. • Wear closed toe shoes, not

flip-flops or sandals, to protect your feet. • Wash your hands after petting animals, and especially before eating.

Teach kids to stay calm if they are separated from parents or other caregivers. Knowing what to do in this scary situation will help prevent a lost child from panicking, and help safety officials locate them faster.

Keep a watchful eye on children. It’s easy for children and caregivers to become separated in large crowds.

Have an established family plan of a location where you will meet if separated.Check with county fair organizers and ask for ‘missing parent’ contact tags

your children can wear with your name and cell phone number in case your child becomes separated.

If you do become separated from your child, notify local security immediately. Before getting on ridesRead all posted rules and listen to instructions given by ride operators’.Watch the ride with your child before boarding. Point out the operator and the entrance

and exit locations prior to riding. Make sure they understand the instructions and warnings fully.

Keep all body parts (hands, arms, legs, long hair, etc.) inside the ride at all times. If you have long hair, keep it pulled up with a hat or hair tie.

If you can’t count on your child to stay seated with hands and feet inside, don’t let them ride. Always use the safety equipment provided (seat belt, shoulder harness, lap bar, etc.).Obey minimum height, age, and weight restrictions. Never sneak children onto rides

if they are too small or too young. A smaller/younger child may not be physically or developmentally able to stay safely seated.

Remain in the ride until it comes to a complete stop at the unloading point. If a ride stops temporarily due to mechanical failure or other reasons. Stay seated and wait for an operator to give you further instructions.

Watch the weather. If it looks like bad weather is moving in, take the proper shelter and stay out from under trees. Find a solid building, not a tent to protect yourself.

Most of all enjoy the fun and games.

I WANT TO THANK EVERYONE FOR THEIR SUPPORT THE PAST THREE YEARS. IT’S BEEN A REWARDING AND EDUCATIONAL JOURNEY SERVING THE PEOPLE OF DARKE COUNTY. SO ON AUGUST 27TH, I ASK FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT SERVING DARKE COUNTY AND THE GREAT DARKE COUNTY FAIR.Paid for by: Aultman for Fairboard Committee

GREENVILLE – The Show Hoppers 4-H Club of Darke County will be hosting a food booth fund-raiser during the Great Darke County Fair. They are conveniently located beside the Rabbit Barn with a menu that includes hamburgers, hotdogs, corndogs, barbeque pork and nachos with cheese. Not only will they be of-fering food for their cus-tomers at a low price, but the chance to win a Kitch-enAid blender, Indianapo-lis Colts jersey and a yard globe. There will also be a daily silent auction on nu-merous items.

Show Hoppers 4-H Club started in the spring of 2014 and currently has 18 inspiring members with advisors, Patricia Carroll and Amanda Behee, who

both have many years of experience raising and showing rabbits as well as plenty of involvement in 4-H over the years. Their meetings are held in Greenville and gener-ally try to have two meet-ings per month and many of their meetings involve working with their rab-bits in a “hands on” man-ner. The current members come from many of the dif-ferent area school districts. In order to be a part of our club, the child’s main proj-ect must be a rabbit. Some of the kids do take other secondary projects and some are also members of other area 4-H clubs with projects other than rabbits in those clubs. Their goal is to help their 4-H kids learn as much as possible about their projects and com-

pete well in Showmanship, Skill-A-Thon and the rab-bit shows at fair each year.

Some of their kids also like to show their rabbits at local and even national rabbit shows. Having good instructional aides and resources are key to their success. They hope you will come out and help support their kids! Pro-ceeds from the food booth will support the efforts of purchasing educational material items for the 4-H club. Many thanks to the donors that have made the food booth possible!
