BothAlfandAlanwereprominent top-classcyclists.Theyweremy first sportingheroes,andwatchingthem,beingaroundthem,excitedmyloveandfascinationforcycling.

Somydesire toexplorehighways,bywaysandtracksandtoheaddownroadsnottakenorlesstravelledgoesbackalongwaynow.Adesiretofollowtracksandroadsziggingandzaggingupanddownhills,divingintovalleysanddisappearinginthefarblueyonderwasan irresistiblepartofwhatdroveandhasdrivenmeformorethanfiftyyears.Andit’swhyIstillrideabike,amentranced,oftenbythehighwaysunreeling before me. Moving, and moved, I’m often mulling a little over what’sbehindandwhatmaybeinstore.Cyclistsknowthatouttherethere’salotmoretoseethanmanyofuseverrealise,willevernotice,andthere’saspecialpleasureingettingthereusingyourunique,oneandonlyenginemadeupofheart,lungs,sinew,muscleandbone.Andwhenyoucomehome,andpeopleaskyouwhereyou’vebeen,andyoutellthem,sometimesthey’redisbelieving.Especiallyifthey’remainly,ifnotsolely,accustomedtosittinginametalcarapace, theair-conditioningon,speedingalongonfourthrummingfattyres.

Onsomedays,thesightsandsoundsandsmellsamazeanddelight.Today,inpartswhereIusedtoridewithpleasure,thelandreeks–animalexcrementandstinkingwatermixedinwithurineandnitratecontaminationisvile.Suchcomesabout,andwearerequired toaccept,as theso-called‘priceofprogress’.Somuchofwhat isdeemedessentialif‘theeconomyistogrow’,ifweare‘toprosper’,is100percentpurelydisgustinglyshort-sighted,irresponsibleandunsustainable.But...

Bethatasitmay,attimes,whendescending,say,orspeedingalonginapowerfultailwind,youfeelasenseofliberation,evenexultation;anearnedfreedomthatbothsetsyouapartandconfirmsyouaspartofafraternitythatmostpeopleneverexperience.Because ...? Because it doesn’t come easily. It requires work, skill, persistence,endurance,courage;becausesometimesithurts,quitealot,especiallyontheclimbsor into a headwind that’s unrelenting, buffeting. The weather’s changing, there’sspittingcoldrain–sometimeshardrain–andyou’restillanhourormoreawayfromhome.Keepgoing,keepgoing,don’t giveup. If you’rehurtingothers are too ...that’swhatIwastold.Icanstillhearmyfatherandotherssaying,‘ifyouwanttobeanygood,youmustlearntosuffer’.Inmyexperiencethatistrue,forafterpainand,attimes,sorrow,theonsetofreliefandpeaceisimmenselysatisfying.Andyou’releftinnodoubtthatithasbeenfullyearned.

From the time Ibeganmycareerat themuseum,my father toldme Iwasawonderof theworld.YetwhenIheldupmyhandmirrortostudymyface,itdidnotseemwondroustome.Myfeatures–grayeyes,blackeyebrows,highcheekbones,palecomplexion–addeduptoaplainperson,asimpleindividualnoonewouldlookattwice.Iconsideredmyselftobenothingspecial,adullcreaturewhocouldnotcomparetothoseGodhadmadetobeuniqueinalltheworld,forthelivingwondersmyfatheremployedwereasmarvellousastheywerestrange.Therewerethosewhocouldeatfire,makingsuretocoattheirthroatsbeforeeachperformancewithathicksyrupmadeintheIndies,andthosewithlimbssoflexibletheycouldflipupsidedown,standingontheirhandsforhoursatatime.TherewasagirlnotmucholderthanInamedMalia,whosearmsresembledabutterfly’swings…

Of all the living wonders, I was most curious about the Wolfman. He was so thoroughlycoveredwithhairthatwhenhecroucheddownheappearedtobeananimal,albeitonewhodressed inpleated trousers, awoollenovercoat, andhandcraftedboots.Hecombedhishairneatlyparteddownhisfacesothathiseyesmightbeseen.Theyweredeepsetandluminous,arichbrowncolour,sohumanitwasimpossibletojudgehimasanythingotherthanamanoncehegazedatyou.TheWolfman’snamewasRaymondMorris,andhecamefromagoodfamilyinRichmond,Virginia,whohadkepthimintheattictoprotecthim,andalsotoensurethere’dbenodamagetothefamily’sreputation.He’dbeenhiddenawayfromthetimehewasborn.

Mr Morris once confided in me that for most of his life he’d truly believed he had all hewouldeverneed,despitebeingraisedbehindlockeddoors.Therewasanursemaidtocareforhim,andlateramanservantbroughtwhateverhewished.Hehadfineclothes,andanyfoodhedesired,foracookhadbeenhiredfromAtlantatoseetohiswhims.Ashegrewolderhisgreatestjoywasreading.Becauseofthispassion,hislibrarysurpassedthoseofmanycolleges.Thelifeheledwasenrichedimmeasurablybythemanynovelsinhiscollection,allofwhichhehadreadmorethanonce.Althoughhe’dneverfelttherain,heknewwhatitwaslikefromhisreadings,justasheknewaboutthelimitlesssea,andthegoldenprairie,andthepleasuresoflove.Hewasconvincedthathisworldwasenough,hetoldme,untilhereadJane Eyre.Thenhisopinionchanged.Hecouldfeeltheworldshiftingashedevouredthestory.Hesuddenlyunderstoodhowapersoncouldgomadiflockedawayfromallothers,andhefoundhimselfhalfinlovewith...thecharacterotherreadersmightconsiderthevillainessofthebook.Heclimbedouthiswindowthesamenighthefinishedthenovel.Fortheveryfirsttimehefelttherainsplashagainsthisskin.

HecametoNewYork...Duetohisreading,MrMorriswascertainthatitwasonlyinthecityofNewYork,soabundantwithenergyandlife,thathewouldbeaccepted,abletoexistasanyotherman,despitehisdifferences.Hewouldmakehiswayalongthegreatavenuesandtheriverspulsingwithcommerce;hewouldwalkamongtheshipbuildersandtheworkers.Instead,hewaslockeduponhisseconddayinthecity,arrestedforcreatinganuisance.Itwasthereinjailthatmyfatherfoundhim,huddledinacell,bloodstreakinghishair.MrMorrishadbeenbeatennearlysenselessonBroadwayinfrontofamassivecrowd,hisabuserscheeredonbythosewhowereconvincedhewasamonster.Theconstableshadbeenofthesameopinion,andhadkepthimcuffedandchained.
